Alric Lindsay, who ran as an independent candidate in the last general election, has made it clear that he has no interest in becoming the next Speaker of Parliament.

Rumour has been swirling that Lindsay is to become the next Speaker on the heels of Dr McKeeva Bush stepping away from the post over the weekend, following a recent incident at an official function.

Lindsay, who is not a member of parliament, has issued a statement to Loop News in an effort to clear the air on the matter.

Deputy Speaker Katherine Ebanks-Wilks

“Regarding public statements being circulated about me being slated for the Speaker of Parliament, I confirm that I have no interest in that Parliamentary position at this time,” the statement read.

“In any event, my understanding as an ordinary citizen is that the matter can only be voted upon by members of the parliament, following the constitution,” it added.

Lindsay said he’s of the belief that Deputy Speaker Katherine Ebanks-Wilks would be the ideal person to fill the post.

See Alric Lindsay’s full statement below:

Regarding public statements being circulated about me being slated for the Speaker of Parliament, I confirm that I have no interest in that parliamentary position at this time.

In any event, my understanding as an ordinary citizen is that the matter can only be voted upon by members of the parliament, following the constitution.

While members of the public wait for members of parliament to select the next Speaker following vacation of office by the current Speaker, I did take the opportunity to speak to Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, the Deputy Speaker, to share my thoughts about the Speaker position.

I expressed to the Deputy Speaker that, if the members of parliament saw it fit to do so, I imagined that it would be a positive development for the people of West Bay and the Cayman Islands as a whole to see a hardworking lady promoted from Deputy Speaker to the Speaker role after receiving Parliamentary training for over a year.

It may also show a level of seriousness of the promises of gender diversity in prominent roles. Perhaps, not only the people of West Bay may envision this, but also the other members of the parliament.

Again, this is a matter for members of parliament to decide upon. Hopefully, unity in government and public interest will prevail.

Three firms successful in CCPF and Export Barbados’ Ocean Challenge Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Three local firms have come out on top in the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF) and Export Barbados’ Ocean Challenge.

The successful firms are eligible for up to US $100,000 in non-reimbursable technical assistance grants from Compete Caribbean to implement their blue economy innovation projects.

The announcement was made on Friday, September 16, in a closing ceremony at the Bagnall’s Point Gallery, Pelican Village. In attendance were representatives of CCPF, Export Barbados and the Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology. They heard first-hand about the innovative and cutting-edge technologies being employed to facilitate the sustainable management of our ocean and coastal resources for livelihoods, food security and the economic development of Barbados.

The Ocean Challenge recognizes the economic potential of the blue economy. The projects that will receive support are DigiFish, led by Dr Shelly-Ann Cox of Blue Shell Productions; Blue Bot Project, the brainchild of Antonio Hollingsworth, Bajan Digital Creations Inc; and Skeete’s Bay Market, spearheaded by Michael Hinds, Westpoint Culinary Inc. The technical assistance will cover a maximum of 75 per cent of the total project budget. Each firm is required to finance the remaining 25 per cent of the budget through cash and in-kind contributions.

Delivering the feature address, Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, the Honorable Davidson Ishmael, described the Challenge as “forward-thinking”, noting that it is contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future.

Minister Ishmael added: “This innovative and entrepreneurial drive has the potential to be a game-changer. My Ministry is therefore seeking to assist enterprises and the workforce to harness sustainability as a competitive advantage as they invest in innovation and seize new growth opportunities in the blue/green sector which can catalyze economic development. While this official ceremony marks the end of the initial administrative aspects of Ocean Challenge 2022, it simultaneously signals the beginning of a journey towards unique and rewarding solutions to the challenges that promoted this exploratory mission”.

The Minister congratulated the three Challenge finalists, highlighting their “unrelenting drive to break the status quo” and accept the opportunity to take their businesses to the next level.

Chief Executive Officer of Export Barbados, Mark Hill, noting that Export Barbados is focused on becoming the most innovative export development agency globally, said the Challenges are geared at stimulating an innovative culture across the ocean, bio and design economies.

“This particular challenge is very critical because it taps that key market, the oceans, which currently contributes less than US$1 million to our exports and we want to see that grow significantly. The only way for that to grow is through new innovations, new products that we can put into our export market,” CEO Hill stated.

Dr Sylvia Dohnert, Executive Director of CCPF added that they have earmarked US $4.5 million to invest in the blue economy. She said they not only offer support for entrepreneurs, but governments and blue economy clusters as well.

The Challenge proposals were assessed by the Evaluation Committee comprising Dr Damie Sinanan, Manager, Competitiveness and Export Promotion, Caribbean Export Development Agency; Dr Leo Brewster, Director, Coastal Zone Management Unit; Jari Aaltonen, Green Technology Cluster Manager, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Paula Bourne, Manager of Exports, Export Barbados (BIDC), and Kyle Taylor, Owner Eco Skywater and Partner of Bridg3Point3.

Cali Reggae Band Stick Figure Ends Bob Marley Reign On Billboard Chart

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

California Reggae Band Stick Figure is now the no. 1 album on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, dethroning Bob Marley, who has been in the top spot for more than two years.

Bob Marley’s Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers was the No. 1 album on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart for two and a half years. The album has been in the top ten despite several other notable projects shifting it to No. 1 from time to time.

However, there are new reactions to Marley’s project being usurped by a California Reggae Group called Stick Figure. The group’s album Wisdom was released over a week ago before climbing the chart.

According to biographical information shared by Stick Figure, the American reggae and dub band came together in 2006 and has released seven full-length albums and one instrumental album. Based out of Southern California, the group consists of members, producer, and guitarist Scott Woodruff, keyboardist Kevin Bong, drummer Kevin Offitzer, bassist Tommy Suliman and keyboardist, backup vocalist and guitarist Johnny Cosmic, and a dog named Cocoa.

The group’s album is also the No. 1 album on the iTunes Reggae Albums chart. This is not the first successful album for the group, as four of their previous albums were among the top 10 albums on iTunes- World on Fire, Set in Stone, and Burial Ground.

Stick Figure shared gratitude to their fans for supporting their album on Monday (Sept 19).

“Thank you to everyone who’s been listening to Wisdom! It’s been a week since the release and the feedback has been incredible. It’s the best feeling in the world to release new music, and I really appreciate all the love and support from everyone.”

The latest win for Stick Figure has drawn mixed reactions from industry people as well as reggae fans who expressed fear that the genre was being overtaken by non-Jamaicans.

These fears were echoed earlier this year when another California band, Soja, was awarded a Grammy for Best Reggae Album, something that Jamaicans have always dominated but also regarded as the standard since the genre was developed by Jamaicans.

The No. 1 spot for reggae albums is mainly based on album sales or equivalent streams. According to MRC Data, Stick Figure has pure album sales totaling 9,672.

Marley’s album, however, has continually been a staple for fans throughout the year, with several of his albums remaining on the top 10 reggae albums chart despite being momentarily displaced by others.

Albert-Poyotte: Protective Services Neglected During Past Five Years – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

Home Affairs Minister Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte has told reporters that Saint Lucia’s protective services suffered neglect over the past five years.

She made the remarks while acknowledging Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) staff concerns over work conditions.

“It’s not only Bordelais,” the Minister stated.

“When I look what’s happening in the protective services, a lot of them are unhappy because generally, from all indications, these institutions were virtually neglected during the last five years,” Albert-Poyotte asserted.

And she told reporters that the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration, which came into office after the July 26, 2021, general elections, was seeking to address the neglect.

In this regard, the Babonneau MP recalled that the protective services had a zero budget allocation for training, an issue which she said the SLP administration is already addressing.

“You know the police didn’t have transport,” she observed, adding that the government had provided the Royal Saint Lucia Police Forcer (RSLPF) with vehicles.

In addition, Albert-Poyotte explained that the government was getting ready to construct the police divisional headquarters at Gros Islet and repair the abandoned building in Vieux Fort.

She also noted that 30 SSU officers recently received training and the Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) recruited 49 officers.

Declaring that the protective services have to keep the country safe, the Minister explained that it was not a matter of merely addressing the needs of the BCF, but the SLFS, the police, and Border Control.

And Albert-Poyotte told reporters that the government was seeking to address those needs despite the current challenging economic climate.

The Minister explained that she had discussions with the hierarchy of the protective services, who are clear regarding the government’s direction and the provision of resources to address their concerns.

Salinas figura como uno de los municipios más afectados por Fiona

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV
