Cooks Extension supermarket robbed in broad daylight and owner wounded by gun-toting bandit

Black Immigrant Daily News

Real News: The owners of Mills Supermarket at Cooks Extension telephoned the Grays Farm Police Station and reported that two men had run into their business place and robbed them of an undisclosed sum of money.

The offence reportedly occurred just after 1 o’clock on Thursday, July 14.

Upon responding to the call, officers met the 51-year-old co-owner bleeding from a wound to his forehead.

He reported that he and his wife were inside the supermarket having a conversation, when two males exited a black Toyota Vitz M and ran inside the business place.

One of the perpetrators allegedly was holding a gun and quickly struck the man in the forehead. He then held the owner down on his knees, while the other bandit reportedly held the victim’s wife with one hand and opened the cash pan with the other, grabbing the money he found there.

The pair then ran to the Vitz, which had been parked in front of the supermarket; the driver reversed; and they made good their escape via a western by-road.

The Police issued a medical form to the injured proprietor, and he was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle.

A search for the said car was carried out in the surrounding areas, but the suspects were not found.

The two men are said to be about 5’11” tall, slimly built, and were wearing long black pants with ski masks and head coverings.

Police inquiries are ongoing.

COVID-19: Concern That BA.5 Spread In Saint Lucia Could Herald 7th Wave – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is concerned over the diagnosis of the Island’s first case of the BA.5 variant of COVID-19 involving a woman with no travel history, signalling transmission of the variant within the community.

Recently Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Sharon Belmar-George announced that the infected individual is a 36-year-old female from Vieux Fort.

“This suggests in-country transmission of BA5 and the presence of other cases,” Belmar-George explained.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Glensford Joseph disclosed that the infected individual is young, vibrant, and active.

And in expressing concern about the positive diagnosis, Joseph told Good Morning Saint Lucia on Hot 7 Television that Saint Lucia is emerging from its sixth COVID-19 wave.

“We do have relaxation of many of the protocols as we try to balance the public health and the economy but we recognise that BA.5 is more transmissible the the other COVID-19 variants that we would have seen so far,” Joseph noted.

The senior medical official said health authorities continue to reach out to identify any other BA.5 cases.

He said that the virus affects people vaccinated against COVID-19 and persons who had COVID-19 in the past with some level of natural immunity due to infection.

“Hence it is of concern to us that if we have a significant spread of this BA.5 then we could be heading into the seventh wave knowing that we are having so many mass crowd activities on Island,” Joseph told programme Host Shannon Lebourne.

Global Health authorities say BA.5 to date is the most easily transmissible COVID variant, evading previous immunity from COVID infection and vaccination.

The symptoms of BA.5 are similar to previous COVID variants, including fever, runny nose, coughing, sore throat, headaches, muscle pain, and fatigue.

According to reports, officials estimate that the fast-spreading virus accounted for 65% of the coronavirus variants in the United States as of last week.

Sagicor endorses health and wellness checks at an early age Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

As part of their ongoing Adopt-A-School programme for the current school year, Sagicor recently paid a visit to the St Martin’s Mangrove and Workman’s Primary schools, to conduct basic health and wellness checks of both sets of students, teachers, and ancillary staff.

One by one, each individual was ushered into the Sagicor branded Mobile Medical Unit for an assessment, along with receiving information and guidance as to what good health should look and feel like, in addition to any warning signs to be on the lookout for.

Performing the checks was Sagicor’s in-house Nurse, Rosanna Springer, who explained that the exercise was intended to identify any existing or potential health challenges, information on which would then be passed on to the relevant teachers and parents for follow-up with their family physician or a medical specialist, depending on the area of concern.

“Many children across Barbados do not undergo periodic health checks, which means that unless they bring attention to a challenge they are experiencing, health issues could potentially go undiagnosed”, said Springer. “These issues may also have an impact on the students’ learning ability, which could therefore negatively affect their educational growth and development”, she added.

During the visit, each student’s vision and hearing was evaluated, while basic checks were also conducted with respect to blood pressure, height and weight.

“Brief conversations were also had with each student to explain the importance of the various checks, what the information from each test means, as well as the impact they have on their overall health”, Springer explained.

Speaking on the activity, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sagicor Life Inc, Paul Inniss, said that this is yet another example of the company’s commitment to executing the main elements of the Adopt-A-School programme, relative to improving the physical environment and safety at the school, improving the health of the students and supporting the school’s educational programmes.

“As a health insurance provider, we see first-hand the impact that poor health can have on individuals’ lives, as well as their finances. At this early stage, the growth and development of these students can be set back by unknown or unchecked health issues that negatively impact their ability to concentrate or take in information”, argued Inniss. “Maintaining good health is therefore something that will be encouraged among the students at all of our adopted schools in Barbados and across the region.”

In December of last year, the Sagicor Group officially launched its Adopt-A-School programme, with eight primary schools being adopted across the Southern Caribbean for the 2021-2022 school year. St Martin’s Mangrove Primary in St. Philip and Workman’s Primary in St George were the schools selected in Barbados, following a period of nomination and shortlisting by the company’s team members, with the selected schools being voted on by a staff committee.

Jamaica’s mixed 4×400-metre relay team qualified for Friday night’s final of the event after placing third in their heat in a time of 3.13.95s.

The time makes Jamaica the seventh fastest team going into the finals, which is scheduled to run off at 9:50 pm local time.

The team of Demish Gaye, Roneisha McGregor, Karayme Bartley, and Tiffany James, running in that order, secured the spot for Jamaica.

It is not immediately clear if any change will be made for the finals, but Jamaica will be hard pressed to repeat its performance from three years ago when it copped the silver medal in the event at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

The US team is going into the finals with the fastest time, which is a world leading 3:11.75s, followed by the Netherlands with a season’s best 3:12.63s, the Dominican Republic, also with a season’s best 3:13.22s, and Poland with a season’s best 3:13.70s.

CIBC FirstCaribbean Advances The Sale Of Its Assets In Two OECS Countries

FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited (“FirstCaribbean”) announced today that the sale of its business to two indigenous banks in the eastern Caribbean has received approval from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

The bank further announced that it will now begin the process of transferring its clients to the Bank of St. Vincent & Grenadines Limited in St. Vincent and the St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla National Bank in St. Kitts.  This process is expected to take several months.

The sale of the Caribbean bank’s business in five countries – Aruba, St. Vincent, Grenada and St. Kitts & Nevis & Dominica – was announced in October of 2021.

The Aruba sale was completed earlier this year.

The parties continue to discuss and negotiate key aspects of the transaction in the proposed sale of CIBC FirstCaribbean’s assets to Grenada Co-operative Bank Limited.

The bank further announced that the sale of its assets in Dominica to the National Bank of Dominica will not proceed, as NBD has announced a change in its strategic direction, which does not include an acquisition at this time.

Colette Delaney, Chief Executive Officer of CIBC FirstCaribbean, noted: “We are pleased at the approval of the sales in St. Vincent and St. Kitts.

This helps us deliver on our strategy of simplifying our business.

It’s a complex set of transactions and it will be some months before we complete the transfer of client accounts over to the purchasing banks.

In the interim, we will continue to provide our clients with first class service through a modern everyday banking experience and our employees with the best possible work experience.”
