Elaine Thompson-Herah believes the presence of her husband and coach Derron at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England accounted for her improved performances.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist Herah was speaking on Saturday during an interview with SportsMax TV after she completed the Commonwealth Games sprint double by winning the 200m in a Games record of 22.02 seconds to finish streets ahead of the rest of the field.

Favour Ofili of Nigeria (22.51) and Christine Mboma (22.80) of Namibia took silver and bronze, respectively.

The 200m gold came three days after the Jamaican sprint queen held off Julien Alfred of St Lucia and Daryll Neita of England, to claim the 100m gold in 10.95 seconds.

Thompson-Herah also completed the sprint double in the Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo Olympics but failed to reproduce her Olympic forms at last month’s World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

She was outsprinted by her compatriots Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson in the 100 metres.

And in the 200m in Eugene she finished a disappointing seventh in 22.39 as 28-year-old Jackson set a new championships record and the second-fastest time in history, winning in a sensational 21.45. Fraser-Pryce took silver with a new season’s best time of 21.81.

Fraser-Pryce and Jackson were criticised by Commonwealth Games officials for snubbing the event in preference to athletics events in Europe. Jackson won the 200 at a meeting in Poland earlier on Saturday in 21.84 and Fraser-Pryce, the 100m in a world-leading 10.66.

Thompson-Herah’s coach was not in Oregon but she did not give a reason for his absence.

Carnival 2022 Lacked Private Sector Support Due to Unfavorable Business Climate Created by ABLP

Antigua’s Carnival failed to spur the level economic activity that was expected. This was mainly due to limited buy-in and participation by the private sector.

– Many vendors who do business with the government remain unpaid and were too cash strapped and lacked confidence to invest too much in Carnival.

“In the absence of Government incentives for businesses emerging from the pandemic, businesses lacked confidence which led to limited private sector participation in Carnival.”  Lovell also noted poor attendance at most government-run events, whereas attendance hit record high levels at most Carnival fetes, that were coordinated by independent promoters.

“The only meaningful attendance and business activity during Carnival, was the fetes. Fete organizers got it right in delivering the best value for money. There was an explosion of new fetes on this year’s entertainment calendar and this signals the untapped potential for events tourism in Antigua and Barbuda, “ Lovell added.

Lovell raised concerns that the lack of private sector involvement signals low business confidence. Also the government’s failure to pay vendors owed for over a year, will likely affect the long term viability of these small businesses.

“Government shouldnt replace but look to partner with the private sector on joint development initiatives and serve as a constructive force in shaping a more enabling environment that ultimately draws in more private capital. “

The government should be available to share expertise and best practices to support private sector partners. But the current business model that relies primarily on government agencies for sponsorship dollars, will only stagnate the economy.

Lovell advises that the government should focus more on cultivating an enabling business environment that would give promoters, small businesses and others private sector players, the requisite tools and a level playing field to grow.

THE police are stepping up efforts to stifle access to illegal guns, acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob said as he spoke of the latest weapon haul by police on Friday.

In a release, Jacob said the police service remained “adamant on stifling the ease of access of illegal firearms and ammunition in our communities.”

He said sound detective work, intelligence-based operations and partnering with the public will play a major role in reducing the occurrence of gun related violence.

Jacob commended his officers for their efforts, pointing to Friday’s firearms removal and narcotics eradication exercise in the Southern Division which led to the arrest of eight people and the seizure of three illegal firearms, 42 rounds of ammunition along with a quantity of marijuana seedlings, marijuana and cocaine.

The police’s release said officers of the Southern Division Task Force and canine unit executed search warrants in the Princes Town, Ste Madeline and San Fernando districts. This exercise was supervised by Sgt Mason and Cpl Legendre.

Five people were arrested and one Berretta pistol with ten rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, 140 marijuana seedlings, 120 grammes of marijuana and three grammes of cocaine were seized.

Two people from Indian Walk, Moruga, were arrested in connection with the firearm, ammunition, marijuana and marijuana seedlings. They are expected to be jointly charged with possession of firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of cannabis over the prescribed legal limit and possession of more than four growing marijuana plants.

A Marabella man, 38, and two from Princes Town were also arrested for possession of cocaine.

Police said a teenager and two men were also arrested after Tableland police searched a vehicle and allegedly found an AR15 rifle and a Glock 17 pistol, both of which were fitted with magazines containing ammunition. A crate with 32 round of nine millimetre ammunition was also found in the vehicle.

The three, who are all from the Tableland, were arrested. Those exercises were led by senior Supt Lucia Winchester, Supt Rampath, Supt Carthy, ASP Jaikaran and Insp Phillip.

In the Western Division, members of the Gang and Intelligence Unit seized an AR Rifle with nine rounds of 5.56 ammunition from a house on Cemetery Street, Diego Martin.

Officers went with a search warrant and when they got there, a man ran from the back of the house with a bag in his hand. The suspect, who was named in the warrant, dropped the bag while escaping over a wall.

The bag was searched and the rifle was found.

Meanwhile, officers of the e Port of Spain Division Strike Team also seized a black metal rifle with a magazine at a property on Bamboo Road, Five Rivers, Arouca.

The gun was found concealed in a white feed bag.

Additionally, in the Eastern Division, officers were in the Rio Claro district where they found a home-made firearm and two 12-guage cartridges in the root of a tree on a parcel of land at Ridge Road, San Pedro.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, who was invited to a ceremony to mark the fourth anniversary of the Buxton-Friendship Museum, Archives & Culture Centre (MA&CC) on Saturday, has assured the community that work continues behind the scenes to bring economic empowerment and agricultural projects to Buxton.

According to the President, they are working on a number of initiatives that will not only bring economic empowerment, but improve the livelihoods of residents. This is particularly in the agricultural sector, with President Ali saying that he has tasked Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha with working alongside residents.

“Right now, as I speak to you, we’re working on a number of initiatives, since the last meeting here, to bring economic empowerment, improve livelihood. I’ve already tasked the Minister of Agriculture. He has outlined a clear path on developing the farm to market road, on developing the drainage canal.”

“And I said to him, we must work to make Buxton a bread basket of food production. We must include the young people. I challenged him, let’s get the farmers to come together. Let’s get this body to bring the farmers together and deploy the land that you have here collectively, so that we can advance the potential of that land into opportunities in agriculture,” the President also said.

According to him, his Government has an open-door policy and is ready to work with everyone when it comes to economic empowerment. He also went on to describe the work his Government is doing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“I’m saying, you are knocking at open doors. We are ready to work with you in advancing a project like this. These are the things that will advance the empowerment. I’m very happy we have all these young people graduating in technology. But how do we advance the empowerment? How do we link that to job creation?”

“I’ll tell you how. Right now, I’m working with an African Guyanese who did exceptionally well at Amazon. And what is she doing for us? She’s developing a tech platform in which we can certify young Guyanese to work at Amazon in tech fields. Jobs coming to you. And we’re going to invest in that programme. We’re now working out the modalities of that programme. And who’s it developing? The young African Guyanese,” the President said.

President Ali also told the first graduates of the Buxton-Friendship Museum, Archives and Culture Centre computer programme that their achievements are linked to job creation.

The President also pointed to the importance of history and culture in shaping the understanding that “we are all part of the family of humanity.”

Following the ceremony, President Ali and the delegation joined guests for a walkthrough of the museum and a viewing of the exhibits. Several Cabinet Ministers joined President Ali in celebrating with the community, including Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd, Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Oneidge Walrond, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat and representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Last month, Prime Minister, Retired Brigadier Mark Phillips had led a massive ministerial outreach to the community of Buxton, East Coast Demerara, taking a new course of development and opportunities to residents.

The outreach saw scores of persons showing up, as Government Ministers tended to age-old issues, while announcing solutions and new interventions on the spot. The Cabinet team included Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, Attorney General Anil Nandlall; Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony; Sports Minister Charles Ramson, Housing Minster Collin Croal, Tourism Minister Oneidge Walrond, Local Government Minister Nigel Dharamlall and Minister at the Office of the President Kwame Mc Coy.

While a sprinkling of persons chose to protest on the streets, the Prime Minister lauded the gathering for choosing development of the community, and not falling prey to divisive persuasions.

He had underscored that the Government has an inclusive people-centred plan and Guyana is now positioned at a greater advantage with the oil resources to fulfil the needs of Buxton and other communities.

La presidenta ejecutiva de la Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA), Doriel Pagán Crespo, anunció el domingo las subastas para nuevos proyectos de infraestructura en que beneficiarán a los municipios de Arecibo, Camuy, Vega Baja, Jayuya, Vieques, Culebra, Aguada, Isabela, Aguadilla, Rincón, Moca, Juncos, Yabucoa, Humacao, Naguabo, San Lorenzo, Cidra, Luquillo y San Juan, estos con una inversión aproximada de 150 millones de dólares. 

“Nos mantenemos enfocados en identificar y atender las oportunidades de desarrollo para nuevos proyectos”, expresó la funcionaria en declaraciones escritas.

Añadió que, “estos proyectos serán financiados con fondos propios de la AAA, la Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA, por sus siglas en inglés), el Programa de Recuperación de Desastres de Subsidios para el Desarrollo Comunitario (CDBG-DR) y el Programa Estatal de Fondo Rotatorio de Agua Potable bajo las disposiciones de la Ley Pública 104-182- EPA, Ley de Agua Potable Segura”.

Los avisos de subastas para estos proyectos de mejoras son los siguientes:

Terminación de la primera etapa de la planta Valenciano y mejoras a la toma de aguas crudas Ceiba Sur en Juncos:  El proyecto consiste en la culminación de las obras de construcción de la planta potabilizadora Valenciano y las mejoras a la estación de toma y bombeo de agua cruda Ceiba Sur. Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 48,000 familias del municipio de Juncos.
Diseño y construcción (fase 1) para rehabilitar tanques ubicados en la Región Este:  El objetivo del proyecto son los esfuerzos de rehabilitación y mejora de los tanques ubicados en la Región Este.  Los seis tanques impactados por el proyecto han sido identificados en las siguientes localidades: Bayamoncito en Cidra, La Barbera en Humacao, Pasto Viejo en Humacao, El Retiro en Humacao, Las Colinas en Luquillo y Quebrada en San Lorenzo. El proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 11,048 familias de los municipios de Luquillo, Humacao, Cidra y San Lorenzo.
Diseño y construcción del sistema de alcantarillado sanitario Ceiba y Gurabo Abajo: El proyecto consiste en el diseño y construcción de una tubería del sistema de alcantarillado sanitario desde el centro comunitario y la escuela primaria Juana Sánchez en la PR-946 hasta la estación de bombeo Placitas EBAS en Juncos.  El proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 450 familias del municipio de Juncos.
Adquisición e instalación de generadores de emergencia (fase2) para la Región Norte: Este proyecto tiene como objetivo la adquisición e instalación de generadores de emergencia, con el fin de reponer los que se encuentren fuera de servicio, defectuosos o hayan llegado a su vida útil.  El Proyecto incluye el suministro e instalación de generadores de energía de emergencia, interruptores de transferencia automática (ATS), conductos, cableado y tanques de Diesel. El proyecto beneficiará a cientos de familias en varios municipios de la Región Norte de la AAA.
Diseño y construcción para la rehabilitación de la troncal sanitaria Isabela- Aguada, Isabela, Aguadilla, Aguada y Rincón: El proyecto consiste en la rehabilitación de la troncal Cloaca Isabela-Aguada ubicada en los municipios de Isabela, Aguadilla, Aguada y Rincón.  La rehabilitación de cada segmento de alcantarillado sanitario por gravedad se realizará utilizando tecnología sin zanjas Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP).  Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 18,060 familias en los municipios de Rincón, Aguadilla, Aguada y Moca.
Reubicación de la estación de bombas Jesús Cruz Miranda en Jayuya: El proyecto consiste en la reubicación de la estación de bombeo Jesús Cruz Miranda, incluyendo mejoras al sistema de distribución y bombeo de agua en la planta de filtración Mameyes-Limón en Jayuya. Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 500 familias del municipio de Jayuya.
Diseño y construcción para rehabilitación de la troncal de Camuy y Arecibo: El objetivo de este proyecto es la rehabilitación de las troncales Cloacas de Camuy y Arecibo, ubicadas en los municipios de Camuy y Arecibo. Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 7,575 familias en los municipios de Camuy y Arecibo.
Diseño y construcción para la rehabilitación de la troncal de alcantarillado de Vega Baja: El objetivo de este proyecto es la rehabilitación del colector sanitario troncal de Vega Baja, ubicado en este municipio y beneficiará aproximadamente a 17,242 familias de este.
Reubicación de troncal Rexach en el Caño Martín Peña en San Juan: Con este proyecto, la AAA estará reubicando un segmento de 48” de diámetro de la tubería de alcantarillado troncal Rexach en apoyo a la iniciativa de la Corporación ENLACE Caño Martín Peña (ENLACE) para el dragado y encauzamiento del Canal Caño Martín Peña (CMPCh). Este proyecto beneficiará a 24,275 familias en San Juan.
Diseño y construcción para reemplazo de tubería de 8” en sistema Camino Nuevo en Yabucoa: El proyecto consiste en el reemplazo de segmentos de la tubería existente de 6″ y 8” en la carretera Estatal PR-901 en el municipio de Yabucoa.  Esta tubería conduce agua potable desde la planta de filtración de Yabucoa hasta el barrio Camino Nuevo.  También se propone convertir el tanque El Negro en un tanque de distribución. Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 1,400 familias.
Construcción y reubicación de tubería de agua potable de 12” de diámetro de Vieques y un nuevo tanque de distribución en Punta Lima en Naguabo y Vieques: El proyecto consiste en mejorar el sistema de agua potable de los municipios de Vieques y Culebra.  El proyecto combina la demolición y reconstrucción del tanque de distribución Punta Lima ubicado en Naguabo y la reubicación de un segmento de la tubería de agua potable de Vieques ubicada en el municipio de Vieques. Este proyecto beneficiará a aproximadamente 4,819 familias en los municipios de Vieques y Culebra.

El sector delantero de una onda tropical resultó en nubosidad y actividad de aguaceros a través de toda la mitad norte de Puerto Rico.

Hasta ahora, de acuerdo con las acumulaciones de lluvia del radar Doppler, casi una pulgada fue observada sobre los municipios del norte-central. Las temperaturas durante la noche estuvieron entre los altos 70s a los bajos 80s en elevaciones bajas y entre los altos 60s a bajos 70s en elevaciones altas.

Los vientos estuvieron del este a 10 mph con vientos en ráfaga y variaciones de brisa terrestre.

Se pronostican condiciones del tiempo inestables mientras que una onda tropical se mueve sobre las islas. Este aumento en humedad resultará en actividad de aguaceros a través de la tercera parte del este de Puerto Rico en la mañana y en las últimas horas de la tarde sobre el oeste y suroeste de Puerto Rico.

Dada las condiciones esperadas, se esperan acumulaciones de agua en áreas de drenaje deficiente y en áreas urbanas, tanto como algunas inundaciones menores, especialmente con la actividad más fuerte.

Las temperaturas durante el día estarán entre los medios 80s a bajos 90s sobre los sectores costeros y en los bajos 70s a bajos 80s sobre las montañas. Los vientos prevalecerán del este y estarán entre 15-20 mph, con vientos en ráfaga y variaciones de brisa marina.

Una alta presión en la superficie continuará resultando en vientos del este de moderados a vigorosos a través de las aguas regionales. Por lo tanto, espere oleaje de hasta 7 pies a través de las aguas del Atlántico y el pasaje de Anegada, donde una advertencia para operadores de embarcaciones pequeñas está en efecto.

Para todas las otras aguas, los operadores de embarcaciones pequeñas deben ejercer precaución. Existe un alto riesgo de corrientes marinas a través de las playas del norte y este de Puerto Rico y de Culebra. Para el resto de las áreas, el riesgo permanecerá moderado.

Cette situation <> ne se r?glera pas du jour au lendemain, a d?clar? samedi le porte-parole de la Maison-Blanche, Karine Jean-Pierre, lors d’une intervention ? Las Vegas dans le cadre d’une convention de journalistes issus de minorit?s, peut-on lire dans un article du Miami Herald.

“Il n’y a pas de r?ponse facile”, a-t-elle poursuivi. “Et il va falloir du temps pour tout comprendre et ce n’est pas seulement les ?tats-Unis >>, selon Karine Jean Pierre. << Je connais ce pr?sident depuis tr?s longtemps. C’est tr?s personnel pour lui. Il se soucie de la population et nous allons continuer ? travailler avec le d?partement d’?tat et notre ?quipe de s?curit? nationale… . Cela va juste prendre du temps”.

“C’est une situation g?opolitique tr?s compliqu?e ? laquelle nous avons affaire”, a-t-elle d?clar?. “Il n’y a pas de grande r?ponse, si ce n’est que nous devons faire tout ce que nous pouvons pour aider le peuple ha?tien”.

Jean-Pierre a d?clar? que les ?tats-Unis ont fourni une aide humanitaire et ont eu des conversations avec leur ambassade ? Port-au-Prince, qui est aujourd’hui situ?e pr?s du bastion de deux puissants gangs.

Mme Jean-Pierre a vant? l’engagement de M. Biden en faveur d’Ha?ti, affirmant qu’elle le conna?t depuis plus de dix ans et qu’elle s’est rendue avec lui ? Little Haiti pendant sa campagne pr?sidentielle, o? elle a rencontr? des dirigeants communautaires.

“J’?tais avec lui lorsque le tremblement de terre s’est produit en Ha?ti et j’ai vu comment il a r?agi”, a-t-elle dit, “et comment il a trait? avec une communaut? qui souffrait, qui ?tait en deuil”.

Au cours des sept premiers mois de cette ann?e, les ?tats-Unis ont rapatri? de force plus de 20 000 Ha?tiens, contre 19 629 pour toute l’ann?e 2021, selon les statistiques de l’Office international des migrations des Nations unies. La plupart des migrants rapatri?s aid?s par l’OIM r?sidaient auparavant au Chili ou au Br?sil, o? sont n?s plusieurs milliers d’enfants rapatri?s – et ont ?t? renvoy?s par les ?tats-Unis apr?s avoir voyag? vers le nord. Les expulsions des ?tats-Unis, ainsi que d’autres d?cisions r?centes concernant Ha?ti, ont amen? certains ? se demander si Biden se soucie vraiment de ce pays.

En soulevant le doute, ils ont fait resurgir un clip de 1994 dans lequel Biden, alors s?nateur repr?sentant le Delaware et discutant d’une intervention militaire, a d?clar? ? propos d’Ha?ti : “Si Ha?ti s’enfon?ait tranquillement dans les Cara?bes ou s’?levait de 300 pieds, cela n’aurait pas beaucoup d’importance en termes d’int?r?t pour nous.”

Interrog?e par le Miami Herald sur ces commentaires et sur la politique d’expulsion des Ha?tiens men?e par l’administration, Mme Jean-Pierre a indiqu? que les questions concernant Ha?ti lui ?taient personnelles.

Les garde-c?tes ont ?galement indiqu? que plusieurs personnes du groupe avaient saut? dans l’eau sans gilet de sauvetage et avaient d? ?tre secourues, peut-on lire dans cet article.

Anne Heche in hospital, ‘stable’ after fiery car crash Loop Jamaica

Actor Anne Heche was in the hospital Saturday following an accident in which her car smashed into a house and flames erupted, a spokeswoman said.

“Anne is currently in stable condition. Her family and friends ask for your thoughts and prayers and to respect her privacy during this difficult time,” Heather Duffy Boylston, Heche’s friend and podcast partner, said in a statement.

Heche’s speeding car came to a T-shaped intersection and ran off the road and into the house in the Mar Vista section of Los Angeles’ westside shortly before 11 am Friday, Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im said.

The car came to a stop inside the two-story house and started a fire that took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to douse, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Television news video showed a blue Mini Cooper Clubman, badly damaged and burned, being towed out of the home, with a woman sitting up on a stretcher and struggling as firefighters put her in an ambulance.

No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made. Police detectives are investigating.

A native of Ohio, Heche first came to prominence on the NBC soap opera “Another World” from 1987 to 1991. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for the role.

In the late 1990s she became one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films. She co-starred with Johnny Depp in 1997’s “Donnie Brasco”; with Tommy Lee Jones in 1997’s “Volcano”; with Harrison Ford in 1998’s “Six Days, Seven Nights”; with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix in 1998’s “Return to Paradise,” and with an ensemble cast in the original 1997 “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000 heightened her fame and brought immense public scrutiny.

In the fall of 2000 soon after the two broke up, Heche was hospitalised after knocking on the door of a stranger in a rural area near Fresno, California. Authorities said she had appeared shaken and disoriented, and spoke incoherently to the residents.

In a memoir released the following year, “Call Me Crazy,” Heche talked about her lifelong struggles with mental health and a childhood of abuse.

She was married to camera operator Coleman Laffoon from 2001 to 2009. The two had a son together. She had another son during a relationship with actor James Tupper, her co-star on the TV series “Men In Trees.”

Heche has worked consistently in smaller films, on Broadway, and on TV shows in the past two decades. She recently had recurring roles on the network series “Chicago P.D.” and “All Rise,” and in 2020 was a contestant on “Dancing With the Stars.”

“Better Together,” the podcast hosted by Heche and Duffy Boylston, is described online as a celebration of friendship.
