600 young farmers and fishers to benefit from pilot project Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Some 600 young farmers and fishers across five parishes will benefit from support to bolster their enterprises and combat climate change under the pilot ‘Strengthening the Adaptive Capacity of Farmers and Fisherfolk in Jamaica’ project.

The initiative, which is being undertaken through a $21.5-million grant from Global Affairs Canada and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), United Kingdom, was launched on Thursday, August 11, at the Denbigh 4-H Training and Production Centre in May Pen.

It is a key activity under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Enabling Gender-Responsive Disaster Recovery, Climate and Environmental Resilience in the Caribbean (EnGenDER) Project and will be implemented with support from the Jamaica 4-H Clubs.

The project is targeted at male and female youth farmers and fisherfolk in select communities in Clarendon, Westmoreland, Manchester, St. Elizabeth and St. Thomas.

Over a six-month period, participants will receive training in business management and financial literacy, as well as business inputs to start and strengthen their farming, fisheries and agro-processing enterprises.

This project, which employs a gender-sensitive model, also seeks to strengthen equity and access of the beneficiaries to climate-resilient resources, thereby boosting their adaptive capacity.

It is intended that the undertaking will contribute to national efforts to reduce youth unemployment and engage more young people in agriculture.

State Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Franklin Witter, in his address at the launch, noted that under the project, 175 youth will be trained and certified in crop and livestock production, fisheries, and value-added agriculture.

In addition, venture inputs, technical and coaching support will be provided to 110 youth towards the development of agriculture-based enterprises.

“It will strengthen youth resilience to climate change and help to pull vulnerable groups towards maximising their true potential,” Mr. Witter added, noting that equity in the agriculture sector will allow more persons to participate in the country’s economic growth.

“Our goal at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries is to chart a course that will ultimately protect lives and livelihoods and our young people must lead this initiative to energise and lead the agricultural sector,” he added.

Resident Representative, UNDP Multi Country Office in Jamaica, Denise Antonio, who participated in the launch online, said the project aligns with the Jamaica 4-H Clubs ‘Youth in Agriculture’ programme.

She noted that the grant funding will provide the 600 young people with “skills building and business development, contributing directly to sustainable and climate smart livelihoods within the agriculture and fisheries sectors”.

“The work to be undertaken holds much promise for transforming our beneficiary communities, particularly the youth,” Ms. Antonio said.

The EnGenDER Project, which is being implemented in several Caribbean countries, aims to improve climate resilience for women and girls, key vulnerable populations and future generations.

In addition to Jamaica, the other beneficiary countries are Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname.

Bounty Killer sues British music exec for millions in royalty dispute Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Lawyers for dancehall icon, Bounty Killer, have filed a lawsuit in the High Court Justice in London in the UK, against British national Othman Mukhlis in a dispute over the withholding of royalties collected on behalf of the Jamaican artiste.

In the lawsuit, Bounty Killer has claimed that Mukhlis and his company, Jamdown Music Limited, collected over 325,000 pounds in royalties since 2002 and that the sums were never paid over to him.

The money allegedly owed is over Ja$70 million when converted.

Details concerning the outstanding royalty were reportedly discovered by Bounty Killer’s former manager Julian Jones-Griffith, who brought it to the entertainer’s attention.

The artiste moved to retain lawyers in the US and UK who investigated the matter and reportedly found statements and payments for over 325,000 pounds that were never paid to the artiste.

Mukhlis, a British national, is known in the entertainment circle in Jamaica via his music publishing company, Abood Music.

Bounty Killer whose given name is Rodney Basil Price has also claimed in court documents that when agreeing to allow Mukhlis to collect his royalties for a 15-per cent commission, Mukhlis made a “fraudulent misrepresentation” which means the agreement should be rescinded.

In addition to the agreement being rescinded, Bounty Killer is also seeking an order from the UK High Court that Mukhlis and Jamdown fully account for and pay him all royalties reportedly collected but allegedly not turned over to the artiste.

The dancehall star is also seeking interest over the 20-year period and legal costs.

Efforts to contact Mukhlis and his lawyers were unsuccessful. However, it’s understood that Mukhlis is denying the allegations contained in Bounty Killer’s lawsuit.

The lawsuit lists Mukhlis as the first defendant who describes himself at Companies House as a record manager.

The second defendant (Jamdown) is a company incorporated in England and Wales on September 11, 1997.

The lawsuit says Mukhlis is and has always been the sole director of, sole shareholder in and person with overall control of Jamdown.

The third defendant (Abood) is a company incorporated in England and Wales on July 16, 2001. It describes its nature of business at Companies House as sound recording and music publishing activities.

According to Court documents, Mukhlis has since 24 June 2004 been the sole director of, sole shareholder in and person with overall control of Abood.

Villa beat Everton 2-1 as Gerrard gets better of Lampard Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Steven Gerrard got the better of former England teammate Frank Lampard in their first meeting as managers as Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1 thanks to goals by Danny Ings and Emi Buendia in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ings turned inside the penalty area after receiving a pass from strike partner Ollie Watkins, took an extra touch to his left and scored with a fierce left-footed strike in the 31st minute.

Watkins, back in the starting team after being a substitute in the 2-0 loss at Bournemouth last weekend, also set up Buendia for the second goal in the 86th. The Argentina playmaker slipped a pass through to Watkins, whose low center across the face of goal was tapped in by Buendia.

While Villa secured their first win of the season, it was a second straight loss for Lampard’s Everton, which barely threatened until Lucas Digne bundled the ball into his own net from a cross by substitute Amadou Onana in the 87th.

The closest the visitors came before that was a goal, scored by Anthony Gordon at a corner, that was ruled offside against the winger. There was a late flurry of efforts by Everton in stoppage time but Villa held on.

Gerrard and Lampard were long-time teammates for England — they were brilliant as individual players breaking forward from midfield but struggled to be compatible as a pair in central midfield — and went into senior management around the same time in 2018.

Gerrard looks to have the better squad at his disposal for this season, with Boubacar Kamara — newly signed from Marseille in central midfield — impressing for Villa on Saturday with his energy and reading of the game.

Lampard is missing a presence up front for Everton with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured and Richarlison having been sold to Tottenham.

Everton lost their opener 1-0 against Chelsea and could be set for another relegation fight after narrowly avoiding the drop last season.
