39-year-old female could face prison for road death Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

In the early hours of August 8, 20-year-old Aleiny Reve Villegas lost her life in a tragic, single-vehicle accident on Eastern Avenue. While family and friends mourn, members of the public wonder what will be the fate of the 39-year-old female of George Town who was arrested on August 10, 2022 on suspicion of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.

Consequences

The consequences under the Traffic Act for the 39-year-old, if convicted, could be imprisonment for ten years and an automatic disqualification from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for a term of five years or such longer period as the court may order. The particulars of the offence will also be endorsed on the driver’s driving record.

In order for the court to get to that point, however, police must prove that the suspect was driving the vehicle on a road “dangerously or recklessly,” having regard to the manner of driving or to the defective condition of the vehicle, and by so doing caused the death of Ms Villegas.

Police gathering evidence

While police continue their investigation, one of the things they have reviewed was CCTV footage of the incident where it was observed that a small sedan was passed by the Honda Accord carrying Ms Villegas, just before the fatal collision. Police will therefore be appealing to the driver of that small sedan and any other person who may have witnessed the accident in order to gather evidence for the case.

Number of accidents alarming

The untimely passing of Ms Villegas adds to the high number of serious accidents that are reported in the Cayman Islands each year, with 2,633 motor vehicle accidents being attended by police officers in 2021, an increase of 466 vehicle accidents from 2020. This number may increase again in 2022 if the average of 51 motor vehicle accidents per week continues to be the norm.

Curbing the number of accidents

In order for serious accidents and road deaths to not become the norm, the behaviour of road users must change. This means drivers taking the decision not to drive if alcohol or other drugs are involved, not going over the speed limit or otherwise placing other road users in danger.

Authorities should also take a look into drivers’ licence qualifications in the Cayman Islands. In particular, they should examine the criteria for issuing drivers’ licences (minimum age for first time drivers’ licences, content of driving exam and requirements to pass the exam) and the process for transferring drivers’ licences from other jurisdictions to Cayman (as the jurisdiction that the driver is coming from may have lower driving standards than Cayman). Higher penalties for drivers may also need to be implemented, especially were drugs or speeding are contributing factors to an accident.

New Zealand beat West Indies by 90 runs, lead T20 series 2-0 Loop Jamaica

Glenn Phillips struck a half century from 33 balls to propel New Zealand to a 90-run win over the West Indies in the second Twenty20 international at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday, clinching the three-match series with a 2-0 lead.

After reaching his fifth T20 half century, Phillips went on to 76 from 40 balls and led New Zealand to 215 for five as they batted after winning the toss, exceeding the 185 for five that was a winning total in the first match of the series. His innings included six sixes and four fours.

The West Indies managed only 125 for nine in reply, lacking the partnerships that underpinned a New Zealand total which was the highest by a visiting team against the West Indies in a T20 in the Caribbean.

Phillips put on 71 for the third wicket with Devon Conway who made 42 from 34 balls and 83 with Daryl Mitchell who made 48 from 20.

The West Indies’ best were stands of 35 for the seventh wicket between Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell which began when the home team was 40 for six and the match probably was already lost. Hayden Walsh (10) and Obed McCoy (23) put on 38 in an unbroken stand for the last wicket.

Phillips put to good use his knowledge of conditions at Sabina Park, which is his home ground in the Caribbean Premier League.

“Coming back to Sabina Park is amazing. I’ve got great memories here,” Phillips said in a television interview. “Being able to get a 50 for my country over here in front of a crowd which I really love is definitely very special for me.

“Credit to the West Indies for the way they bowled up front with the new ball which was really, really good in terms of taking the pace off the ball when it was new and harder. As it got older the pitch became a bit nicer to bat on.”

Seven West Indies wickets fell to spin bowlers, including the first four of the innings.

Mitchell Santner, who was Man of the Match for his three for 19 in the first match, took a wicket with his first ball and two wickets in his opening over to set back the West Indies’ run chase.

Off spinner Michael Bracewell, who replaced fast bowler Lockie Ferguson in the New Zealand lineup, also took a wicket with his first delivery, dismissing captain Nicholas Pooran (1) as the West Indies slumped to 12 for three at the start of the fourth over.

Santner and Bracewell both finished with three for 15 while Ish Sodhi took one for 36. Tim Southee took the only wicket which fell to a fast bowler, removing Odean Smith at the tail and returning one for 34.

Shimron Hetmeyer was the first batsman not to fall to a spin bowler, run out by a direct hit at the bowlers end by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. The West Indies were 28 for five at that point and couldn’t recover.

“We just didn’t show up today,” Pooran said. “They batted us out of it and we couldn’t see our way with the bat. We had to stay in the game. It just didn’t start well for us. We are struggling but the more cricket we play our performance will grow.”

The final T20 will be played on Sunday at the same venue, followed by three one-day internationals.

XXXTentacion Murder Suspect Pleaded Guilty To Testify Against Associate

Black Immigrant Daily News

XXXTentacion’s family is one step closer to getting justice.

One of four men behind bars for the murder of Florida rapper XXXTentacion has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. The bombshell plea will see the murder accused become a prosecution witness in the upcoming trial set to take place in January 2023.

XXXTentacion was shot dead in 2018 outside a South Florida motorcycle dealership four years ago. He was followed by four men and robbed of cash and belongings.

One of the defendants, Robert Allen, 26, of a Lauderhill, Florida address, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon on Friday.

According to the Broward State Attorney’s Office, on Friday afternoon, the defendant pleaded guilty of his own free will. “This was an open plea to the court, with no negotiated deal with the state,” the email reads, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Allen is being represented by attorney James Lewis revealed that his client decided to enter a guilty plea so he can testify against his co-defendants, Dedrick Williams, 26, of Pompano Beach, Trayvon Newsome, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, and Michael Boatwright, 26, of Fort Lauderdale.

The attorney said that the plea was entered as it was in the best interests of his client to cooperate, and he hinted that he and his client are hoping that the guilty plea might influence the president Broward Circuit Judge Michael Usan in exercising discretion for a possible lighter sentence.

Allen is facing life in prison for the offense. The other defendants, Williams, Boatwright, and Newsome, are also charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon and have separately pleaded not guilty.

The trial is likely to be set for January, with Lewis disclosing that Allen will take the stand as a prosecution witness.

XXXTentacion was age 20 when he was shot and killed during the robbery incident. Born Jahseh Onfroy, X was leaving the RIVA Motorsports dealership in his BMW i8 in Deerfield Beach before 4 p.m. on June 18, 2018, when the defendants riding in an SUV pulled up and blocked in the rapper’s sportcar.

Two armed men came out of the SUV, robbed the rapper, and shot him multiple times. Prosecutors say that one of the robbers took the rapper’s Louis Vuitton bag containing his cell phone, BMW keys, and $50,000 in cash.

Surveillance footage at the dealership shows that the rapper might have been followed to the store by the men as he arrived at 3:30 p.m, and the SUV parked within minutes with two of the suspects walking inside.

One of the defendants bought a black neoprene mask. His bright orange sandals were used to identify him as defendant Williams. The other suspect was Allen.

The defendants later left the store and parked outside of the parking lot, where they waited to ambush and subsequently kill the rapper.

In the meantime, Williams is said to be the getaway driver and was arrested two days later. Police also identified Boatwright using fingerprints left on the driver’s-side door of the SUV.

Police also secured evidence from Boatwright’s phone history which showed searches for the rapper’s name and also searches for “accessory to murder.” He is said to be one of the gunmen. In the meantime, Allen was arrested in Georgia, where he fled after the incident, while the fourth defendant, Newsome, was identified as the other gunman.

He surrendered to the police after the other three were arrested.

Joycelyn Savage Reveals Pregnancy For R. Kelly: “Robert is extremely excited”

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Joycelyn Savage dropped a bomb on Friday afternoon, noting that she is carrying a child for embattled R&B singer R. Kelly. The R&B singer was recently sentenced to 30 years in jail for racketeering, sex trafficking, and other offenses.

On Friday, Savage released her new tell-all book, Love and Joy of Robert, in which she revealed that she is pregnant with the singer’s baby.

Savage recently revealed that R. Kelly proposed to her on the day of his sentencing by sending an engagement ring to her house even though he was heading to jail for 30 years, where he is likely to spend the rest of his life.

In the 11-page book (back and front 24 pages) released on Amazon on Friday, Savage, who is one of Kelly’s alleged victims, claims that she is months along with the pregnancy.

Joycelyn Savage said she knew a few months after 55-year-old Kelly sent her an engagement ring.

“Months later, I began expecting severe morning sickness and was unsure what was wrong with my body. I thought I had contracted COVID-19, but the most amazing news of all was that I was expecting,” she said. “It was a happy day but an incomplete time in my life. Today I am grateful to God for giving me the most precious gift. Robert is extremely excited about the news that I am having a baby and feels sad that Robert will not be able to be here with us,” the book read, according to the NY Post.

Joycelyn Savage Instagram

The book does not say when or how R. Kelly could have impregnated Joycelyn Savage as he has been locked away for more than a year. Savage, who has denied any allegations that she is a victim of Kelly, also shared a sonogram of the pregnancy.

Savage also said that R. Kelly had some input in the book as he was the one who approved the image of the sonogram.

The 26-year-old says she is “hoping for him to be released and prepare for new beginnings,” in the book.

Last month before his sentencing, Savage wrote a letter to the judge pleading for leniency from the court. In the letter, she revealed that they were engaged. She also said that she is not a victim of the music icon.

Online, social media users speculated about the pregnancy as they questioned the veracity of the claim. Some questioned whether Savage had been allowed conjugal visits, and some have even surmised that if she is truly pregnant, she might be married to the singer.

There were speculations before that Kelly might have married Savage in the same way he married an underaged Aaliyah to prevent her from testifying against him decades ago.

His Attorneys have not responded to the claims.
