The search for the second of two brothers from Jamaica who went missing after jumping into the water from a Massachusetts bridge featured in the movie “Jaws” has been suspended because of hazardous conditions, state police said Tuesday.

Tavaris Bulgin, 26, and Tavaughn Bulgin, 21, were among four people who jumped from the so-called Jaws Bridge on Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday night, according to a statement from the office of Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe.

While two people made it out of the water, the brothers began to struggle in the current and were unable to make it to shore, the statement said.

The Coast Guard, state police and local police responded to the scene and, at about 6:30am Monday, the body of Tavaris Bulgin was recovered. Authorities returned to the scene Tuesday morning with a sidescan sonar device to resume the search for the body of the younger man, state police said.

But that search was suspended in the afternoon when conditions became too dangerous for divers.

“We will assess weather conditions on a day-by-day basis to determine when conditions are safe for divers to resume,” state police said.

The people who jumped in the water were seasonal workers at a restaurant on the resort island where much of the 1975 movie was filmed, state police said.

The bridge that links the towns of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown is officially the American Legion Memorial Bridge. It’s common to see people jumping from the bridge even though there are signs up saying that such activity is prohibited.

The investigation is ongoing and no foul play is suspected, the district attorney’s office said.

MASON, Ohio (AP) — The second stop on Serena Williams’ farewell tour was a short one.

The 40-year-old Williams fell to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career, losing 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night.

Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down, although she did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament.

The Cincinnati event was the second U.S. Open tuneup for Williams, and the next time she takes the court will be at Flushing Meadows. She lost to Belinda Bencic in straight sets last week in Toronto. A day before the announcement, Williams beat Nuria Parrizas-Diaz for her first match win since the 2021 French Open.

Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion, most recently in 2017 at the Australian Open, when she was pregnant with daughter Olympia. She said wanting to expand her family was a big reason she plans to step away.

Raducanu, ranked No. 19 in the world, was sharp as she dispatched Williams — and quieted the vocally pro-Williams crowd — in 1 hour, 5 minutes.

Fans cheered heartily when Williams was introduced, and again when she won her first point on a Raducanu error in the second game. Williams yelled in frustration when she double-faulted and screamed even louder and pumped her fist when she won the third game of the first set.

Down 2-0 in the first set, she fought back within 4-3 and then 5-4, but Raducanu closed out the set at love. Raducanu rolled from there, with Williams looking frustrated and even resigned near the end.

Her later-career inconsistency was on display. The players thrilled the crowd with an exciting rally in the fifth game of the second set, won by Williams with a forehand volley. But she double-faulted on the next point on the way to being broken.

She briskly left the court after the match, waving to the crowd as she exited.

Raducanu, a 19-year-old from Britain, faces veteran Victoria Azarenka in Wednesday’s second round. She has not won a title since her out-of-nowhere triumph at the U.S. Open last year.

Earlier Tuesday, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was eliminated by Shuai Zhang, 6-4, 7-5.

The tournament lost another big name, Coco Gauff, when she retired from her match against qualifier Marie Bouzkova with a left ankle injury. Gauff had her ankle taped after the first set and dropped out after the first game of the second set.

Karolina Pliskova advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Williams’ older sister, Venus. Bencic fell to Sorana Cirstea, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

Rafael Nadal, sidelined since withdrawing from Wimbledon with an abdominal tear, practiced before a large crowd. The 22-time Grand Slam champion is scheduled to play a second-round match on Wednesday.

In a men’s first-round match, Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5, 6-4.

A 49-year-old Morvant man was killed on Tuesday night when a gunman chased him, shooting two children and another man in the process.

Police reported that at about 7 pm officers on patrol received a wireless transmission about a shooting in progress at Mon Repos, Morvant.

PC Cudjoe and officers of the North-Eastern Division Gang Unit responded and found Eusibo Roberts with multiple gunshot wounds. The Mon Repos man was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police said two children were also shot, including a nine-year-old who was shot in the head and is listed in a critical condition at the PoSGH.

The other child, an 11-year-old boy, was hit in the right leg and is warded in a stable condition.

The fourth victim, a 38-year-old man, also of Mon Repos, was shot multiple times and is listed in critical condition.

Police said the gunman got out of a grey Nissan AD wagon and chased Roberts, shooting as he went.

They gave no motive for the killing.

The shooting happened hours after acting Commissioner of Police Mc Donald Jacob held a media briefing on the increasing murder toll and the use of high-powered rifles in killings.

This is the second recent shooting incident in which a child was injured. On August 1, an 11-year-old girl was hit in the leg during a shootout at Sixth Avenue, Malick and her left leg was broken. She has since been discharged from hospital.
