Guyana has recorded 38 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking the total positives detected to date to 70,926.
There are eight persons in the hospitals, two of whom are in the ICU while 302 individuals are isolating at home.
In institutional quarantine, there are two persons. The death toll remains at 1,278 while the recoveries are 69,336.

The Prime Minister’s Office wishes to make it absolutely clear to Barbadians that at no time during her recent overseas trip was Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on a plane that was involved in any accident.
“It is fake news!” the Prime Minister said Wednesday night.
On Tuesday and yesterday, a number of news reports in local and regional media outlets reported that a plane carrying Prime Minister Mottley and Guyana President Irfaan Ali skidded off the taxiway after landing, prompting a response from emergency personnel.
However, the Prime Minister has explained that it is normal procedure for emergency appliances, including fire crews, and official vehicles that transport the president and his guests, to meet the plane on the tarmac.

What occurred at the Eugene F. Correa International Airport when she was there earlier this week was no different from what occurred on previous visits, the Prime Minister said.

El secretario auxiliar de Asuntos Energéticos de La Fortaleza, Francisco Berríos Portela, habló el jueves sobre lo que serán sus funciones en el proceso de fiscalizar el cumplimiento de LUMA Energy, la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica (AEE) el Negociado de Energía y la Autoridad de las Alianzas Publico Privadas (P3) de la política energética.
“Mi rol específicamente va a estar trabajando en lo que es la operación del día a día. El gobernador recientemente reiteró la postura de que solicitó ajustes en el plan de acción de LUMA. Hemos visto y vamos a continuar muy atentos a todos los cambios y las implementaciones de esos cambios que se han solicitado para que el sistema mejore. Y ese es parte del trabajo que yo voy a estar ejecutando”, dijo Berríos Portela a preguntas de la prensa.
El funcionario recibirá diariamente los informes de las agencias vinculadas al tema energético, como parte de su monitoreo.
Cuestionado sobre las acciones que tomará para evidenciar que la información provista es correcta, Berrios Portela contestó que “vamos a estar en constante comunicación con LUMA, la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica, el Negociado de Energía y la Autoridad de las Alianzas Publico Privadas para asegurarnos de que podamos triangular toda esa información y tengamos la información totalmente certera. Sí, vamos a estar también a la misma vez llevando a cabo comunicaciones y enlace con los alcaldes, con los diferentes ‘stakes holders’ (bonistas), partes interesadas que atienden y están pendientes a que el sistema mejore. Es evidente, realmente cuando tenemos una respuesta ante una situación energética, lo vemos. Sabemos la reacción, podemos monitorearlo no solamente con las métricas que nos provee el ente, verdad, LUMA, con las métricas que nos puede generar el Negociado de Energía. Sabemos las molestias que tienen las personas, sabemos la inconformidad que tienen ante la falta de servicios y vamos a estar muy atentos a que todas esas métricas que nos estén dando las podamos comparar y nos aseguramos que sea información correcta”.
“Cuando me estén mintiendo, yo voy a asegurarme de tener obtener la información correcta y voy a hablar con toda la información correcta. Y si tengo que desmentir alguna información que haya sido publicada, puede confiar que así lo voy a estar haciendo”, añadió.
Según la secretaria de la Gobernación, Noelia García Bardales, Berríos Portela hará un monitoreo diario de las gestiones que hace la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica, LUMA Energy, la Autoridad de las Alianzas Publico Privadas y el Negociado de Energía “para entrelazarlas entre sí para asegurar que haya un monitoreo constante. No solamente de métricas como hace el Negociado (de Energía), sino de operaciones. Esta estructura va a reforzar nuestra capacidad de fiscalizar. Va a haber una persona que se va a dedicar específicamente a este monitoreo”.
García Bardales mencionó que por sus labores cobrará 108 mil dólares y comienza oficialmente el primero de septiembre.

El presidente del Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Puerto Rico, doctor Carlos Díaz Vélez afirmó el jueves que a causa de los apagones varios pacientes en la Isla han muerto.
“El número exacto (de pacientes que han muerto) no (lo tengo), pero sí ha habido aumento. Lo tenemos no documentado, pero de la experiencia que se nos ha dicho en los hospitales, y en los centros (de envejecientes) que hemos hablado, sí ha fallecido gente. No está documentado, pero caramba, es que el paciente que está encamado, el paciente que necesita terapia está tan sensitivo a cualquier cambio en su tratamiento que si. Que si, y yo no tengo duda porque nos lo han dicho las personas que ha muerto gente. Lo que hay es contabilizarlos.”, dijo el doctor Díaz Vélez en conferencia de prensa.
“Esto es como un micro María. Que lo vean así, que se está muriendo gente por culpa del sistema eléctrico no ha estado ahí presente”, abundó.
En ese sentido, el presidente del Colegio de Médicos y Cirujanos de Puerto Rico se expresó en favor de la marcha convocada para las cinco de la tarde de este jueves frente a La Fortaleza, donde se exigirá la cancelación del contrato con LUMA Energy.
“Todo lo que sea demostración para llevar un mensaje como el que se va a llevar, yo lo apoyo al cien por ciento. Invito a mis colegas médicos que es lo correcto, que lo hagan”, expresó el doctor Díaz Vélez.
“No importa el que sea, si es LUMA, LIMA, si no lo están haciendo bien pues no podemos estar de acuerdo”, añadió.

La secretaria del Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas (DTOP), ingeniera Eileen Veléz Vega anunció el jueves que entre los convenios con los municipios, la contratación abierta de la Administración de Servicios Generales (ASG) y los acuerdos colaborativos con la Autoridad de Carreteras y Transportación (ACT) resultarán en la rehabilitación de más de 2,000 kilómetros de carreteras, con una inversión que impacta los 78 municipios y representa un depósito de más de 827,000 toneladas de asfalto.
“Estamos enfocados en la optimización del mantenimiento de nuestra red vial, a través de todo Puerto Rico. Para continuar esta obra monumental es necesario fortalecer estas alianzas, en las que el gobierno, de forma diligente, utiliza múltiples mecanismos buscando eficiencias en beneficio del pueblo. El mantenimiento y mejoramiento de nuestras carreteras es un asunto prioritario de esta administración e impacta la calidad de vida de todos los ciudadanos”, aseguró la secretaria del DTOP en declaraciones escritas.
La ingeniera afirmó que “el departamento garantiza la disponibilidad de fondos, cuya inversión sobrepasa los 200 millones de dólares, equitativamente en las áreas de daños y de impacto a la seguridad vía”.
Por su parte, el alcalde de Camuy y presidente de la Federación de Alcaldes, Gabriel Hernández Rodríguez, reconoció la ventaja de firmar un acuerdo de colaboración con el DTOP para la realización de obras de mantenimiento y rehabilitación de carreteras en los municipios. “Es una muestra de cómo podemos agilizar los trabajos en nuestras vías públicas. Estos acuerdos redundan en beneficios para nuestros constituyentes. Agradecemos que la secretaria del DTOP nos tome en cuenta y nos haga partícipes de la obra de reconstrucción”.
“Los municipios siempre hemos estado a la disposición de ayudar al gobierno para adelantar la obra en beneficio de nuestra gente. Las carreteras y puentes es un tema de mucha preocupación, la ciudadanía nos reclama acción a cinco años del huracán María. Nuestra disposición siempre ha estado con la Secretaria Eileen Veléz, los municipios hemos manejado proyectos exitosamente en fondos federales mediante acuerdos de colaboración con el DTOP, pedimos a la Secretaria y al gobierno explore la posibilidad de aumentar el horizonte de oportunidades, siendo conscientes que el tema del asfalto se maneja mejor de la mano de los municipios”, expresó Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz presidente de la Asociación de Alcaldes de Puerto Rico.
Mediante fondos estatales, con los convenios municipales que se manejan a través de reembolsos, se asignan recursos a los ejecutivos municipales para atender repavimentación, dispositivos de iluminación (ojos de gato), desyerbo, recogido de basura, y poda de árboles y arbustos. Además, se trabaja en el marcado de pavimento impactando 386 pies lineales de carretera.
“En su mayoría, los ejecutivos municipales han mostrado un gran compromiso, para juntos, mantener nuestras carreteras en excelente estado, por lo que les exhortamos a continuar con el uso responsable de estos fondos, que están disponibles para el mantenimiento de las vías estatales en sus jurisdicciones”, manifestó Vélez Vega.

La Asociación Hecho en Puerto Rico (AHPR) lanzó el jueves la iniciativa Conectando Contigo, una jornada de educación y networking para empresarios puertorriqueños, en su HUB, ubicado en el tercer piso de Plaza Las Américas.
Jorge Ramírez, nuevo presidente de la asociación, destacó en comunicación escrita “el valor de estos encuentros que propician el intercambio de ideas de negocio y estrategias, al tiempo que se cierran círculos entre empresarios para el desarrollo económico de nuestro país y el de los socios. A la misma vez, se educan con herramientas actuales y útiles para la operación de sus establecimientos”.
“Como organización, queremos añadir valor a nuestros socios y con estas experiencias, al igual que con las diversas alianzas estratégicas que tenemos, lo logramos”, apuntó Ramírez.
Cerca de un centenar de empresarios locales se beneficiaron de este primer encuentro, que se replicará todos los primeros martes de mes y en los que se abordarán temas actuales que inciden en el ecosistema de negocios de Puerto Rico. La primera sesión de Conectando Contigo contó con dos charlas. La primera ¿Dónde estamos con la nueva reforma laboral?, a cargo de la abogada laboral, Vivian Santiago. Santiago ofreció una panorámica de los alcances de la Ley 41 de 20 de junio de 2022.
La segunda presentación estuvo a cargo del economista Gustavo Vélez, quien hizo un llamado para que los empresarios puertorriqueños dirijan la agenda económica de la Isla. “Hay grandes oportunidades, el sector privado tiene que reclamar lo que le corresponde y asumir el liderazgo del tema de la economía de Puerto Rico. La única manera de que el país sea viable es que los empresarios salgamos a asumir el liderato”, sentenció Vélez.

According to the Barbados Meteorological Services, a weak low-level trough analyzed along 61W maintained partly cloudy to cloudy skies and a few scattered showers across the northern portion of the island chain. Here in Barbados, the tropical wave near 59W maintained mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and rain during the early parts of the night. However, as the night progressed, Barbados experienced occasional light to heavy showers, rain, and occasional thunderstorms. 16.3mm of rainfall was measured here at Charnocks. Christ Church.
This wave maintained cloudy skies, light to heavy occasional showers, rain, and thunderstorms across Trinidad, Tobago, and Grenada. The southern extent of the aforementioned wave brought cloudy skies, scattered showers, and rain along with a few isolated thunderstorms across much of the Guianas. However, the northwestward progression of the wave allowed for gradual improvement across French Guiana.
Winds across the region were generally light peaking at 15 knots in St Lucia. Seas remain smooth to moderate with swells peaking at 1.5m in open water.

Stuffing my face with food was fun for a while. It stopped being exciting, however, when I gained so much weight that I could not fit into my clothes or pass by an object without some part of me knocking it over. Eventually, my new weight gains not only affected my coordination and wardrobe, but my self-esteem. Fearing that things could get out of control, I decided to make a change. I adjusted what I ate, along with my mealtimes. It changed my life.
Changes
After two weeks of eating better, my mind was more alert, I was thinking clearly and focused. I noticed this both at work and in my personal life.
At my job, for example, I was executing tasks quicker and was more organised. I also accepted more responsibility and additional work.
For once, I was happy to be at work rather than feeling trapped there until “5:00” doing mindless tasks. I also realised that it was not the job that was making me frustrated and unhappy all the time, but, instead, how I felt about myself, which impacted how I felt about everything else, including work.
Socially, the weight loss earned me compliments. People wanted to know what I was doing to make my body look so good. They wanted to know the secret.
The secret
The secret, I found, was simple.
First, I decided that the weight in my twenties was my target weight (yours may be different).
Then I changed my consumption from greasy food and products with high carbohydrates, high sugar and high fat to a mix of greens, low sugar, low fat, low carbohydrates and sufficient protein.
Lastly, I adjusted my sleeping habits, sleeping for more hours each night.
These changes, combined with smaller portions of food at lunch and dinner and exercising lightly (at first), resulted in a loss of 10 pounds in two weeks (I felt amazing seeing and feeling the results).
Now, in your case, your body composition and height could be different from mine. You may also have underlying health issues which restrict you from eating certain foods or even exercising. I mention this because these distinctions may contribute to different outcomes.
For example, the Mayo Clinic says that “In some people, obesity can be traced to a medical cause, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Cushing syndrome and other conditions.”
Medical problems, such as arthritis, also can lead to decreased activity, which may result in weight gain.
Some medications can lead to weight gain if you don’t compensate through diet or activity. These medications include some antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, diabetes medications, antipsychotic medications, steroids and beta blockers.

In addition, the Mayo Clinic noted that there may be “genetic, behavioral, metabolic and hormonal influences on body weight” which may impact weight.
Therefore, before adjusting your diet or embark on any programme, you should check with your doctor to highlight any concerns with your plans.
Once you find what works for you, it can make all the difference for you mentally, socially and physically. A new, healthier lifestyle that it is a good fit for you.

Police said an Ananda Alert has been activated for teenager Andre Cooper of, the 9 Miles section of the parish, who has been missing since Wednesday, August 24.
He is of dark complexion, slim build and is about 145 centimetres (4 feet 9 inches) tall.
Reports from the Bull Bay police are that at about 12:30 am, Andre was last seen in his community wearing white merino and black shorts. He has not been heard from since.

The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), in July 2022, installed a 3.16kWp Solar PV system along with a 19.2kWh Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Kamwatta Primary School in Region One (Barima-Waini).
The items for the installation at the Kamwatta Primary School were provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support Government’s sustainable energy interventions at community/public buildings in the Hinterland.
Kamwatta is a riverain satellite village of Santa Rosa/Moruca located along the Moruca River, in Region 1 (Barima-Waini). GEA conducted an Energy Needs Assessment earlier in 2022 in the village with the objective of providing energy for the Primary School.
The Guyana Energy Agency, in exercising its mandate, provided support to the Primary School for the transportation and installation of the solar PV and battery energy storage systems.
This initiative will provide a renewable, stable and reliable electricity supply to the Primary School for its daily activities, benefiting approximately 328 students and 27 staff, including teachers and ancillary staff. Also, its operation will result in the avoidance of an estimated 2,715 kg of CO2 emissions annually.
The teachers present at the time of the solar PV system’s installation expressed their gratitude for the initiative, stating that it will allow them to better utilise the Primary School’s services and provide better learning opportunities for the students. GEA’s Engineers provided training to two (2) male and two (2) female teachers at the facility on the operation and maintenance of the system. [Press Release]
