Prison Officer’s Trial Adjourned

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The trial of a prison officer who is facing several drug related charges, has been adjourned until 2nd September, 2022, after three of the prosecution witnesses gave evidence in  the Magistrates’ Court.

Howard Segree, who is now suspended from his job at Her Majesty’s Prison, went to court to begin fighting his case on Monday when the prosecution called three of its four witnesses to give evidence.

The officer is charged with possession of 42 grams of marijuana with intent to transfer and conveying prohibited items into Her Majesty’s Prison.

The prosecution is expected to close its case on 2nd September when the final prosecution witness will give evidence.

The case sparked an intense legal argument between Magistrate Conliffe Clarke and defence attorney, Wendel Robinson, on what constitutes ‘conveying’.

Magistrate Clarke was of the view that the particular section of the law that speaks to conveying has a very broad interpretation.

Robinson, it appears, favoured a narrower interpretation.

In the context of the charges against Segree, the legal concept of conveyance refers to the illegal transportation of weapons, liquor, or drugs to detention facilities or other governmental institutions.

As Emancipation Month 2022 continues, the Saint Lucia National Reparations Committee (NRC) and the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) will on Wednesday (August 31) host a second special international hybrid broadcast from Castries, this time in observance of the United Nations Intonational Day for People of African Descent (IDPAD).

The broadcast, on the National Television Network (NTN), will feature a main presentation by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Representative on the United Nations Permanent Forum for People of African Descent Hon. Ambassador Dr June Soomer.

It will also feature a guest presentation by the President of the African Diaspora Development Initiative (ADDI) Ambassador Arikana Chihombori-Quao, who is also a former Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to the United States.

The United Nations designated 2015 to 2024 as International decade for People of African descent and in 2020 designated that August 31st be observed annually by member-states as the International Day for People of African Descent, as of 2021.

For this the second year, the NRC and the CDF will collaborate with the Government of Saint Lucia, related UN Agencies and the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) to ensure the 90-minute broadcast reflects international and regional dimensions for all Caribbean citizens.

Ambassador Soomer’s topic will be: Beyond the Decade – Why The Permanent Forum is Important for the Caribbean and Ambassador Chihombori-Quao will enlighten on ADDI’s plans for Caribbean representation.

Messages are expected from the Government of Saint Lucia, UN Agencies and the CRC.

The broadcast will start at 11am and end at 12:30pm.

Wednesday’s broadcast follows a first held last Wednesday, August 24, to observe the International Day for Remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its Abolition, with a stirring presentation by London-based Saint Lucian historian, author, poet and expert in Caribbean and African languages, Dr Morgan Dalphinis, who drew the links between the Caribbean and African history from before slavery to present and made the case for Africa to support the CARICOM case for Reparations for Slavery and Native Genocide.

Dr Dalphin’s also spoke of his latest book ‘History of Saint Lucia 1654-1915’ (available on Amazon).

Meanwhile, the NRC and the CDF are also preparing for a third broadcast on Wednesday September 7, to observe the First Anniversary of last year’s inaugural Caricom-African Union (AU) Summit.

It was a horrible day at the office for the Guyana Amazon Warriors men as they bowed out of the 6IXTY tournament after being defeated by the Barbados Royals, who were able to win by 2 wickets and secure a spot in the semifinals of the 6IXTY.

The Warriors lost to the Trinbago Knight Riders on Friday and needed to win against theBarbados Royals if they were to stand a chance of placing in the top four.

Even though, they had won one game and lost the other, the Warriors remained in last position on the table with a daunting run rate of -2.000.

Added to that, favour did not shine on them as the Barbados Royals came out with guns blazing to cement themselves in the top four. Their victory by two wickets saw the likes of Rakheem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers taking control of the game early on as they smacked Ronsford Beaton for 17 runs off the first over in their chase of 109 for victory.

The duo would then return to further stamp their authority smashing Warriors ace spinner Waqar Salamkheil for 15 runs off his over.

Cornwall then fell in the next over for 21, but the damage still continued. Kyle Mayers tookcontrol in the next over and got 23 runs off the next over, seventeen of the runs belonging to Chandrapaul Hemraj and the other maximum being the mystery ball.

Odean Smith managed to stop the carnage as he removed Mayers for 31, but the Royals rallied on as Corbin Bosch and Harry Tector took control.

Even though Tector fell for 14, Bosch (26) ensured the Royals won their game with a boundary and a maximum off Gudakesh Motie.

The Royals ended on 111-4, while Guyana’s Verasammy Permaul bagged 2-12, Odean Smith 1-7 and Gudakesh Motie 1-25.

Earlier in the first innings, the Warriors set a total of 108 for victory.

Chandrapaul Hemraj came out swinging as he smashed 19 off 6. However, when he fell, fellow opener Jermaine Blackwood followed suit.

John Campbell would then play an irresponsible shot at a crucial part in the innings to have the Warriors reeling at 36-3. Shimron Hetmyer dug deep and played a captainsknock leading with 32 off 18 balls, alongside the likes of Heinrich Klaasen who scored 24 off 15 balls, to propel the Warriors to a formidable total.

Bowling for the Royals were Ramon Simmonds 2-9, while Corbin Bosch, Oshane Thomas, and Justin Greaves bagged one wicket each.
