Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is proud of the achievements of Barbadians in various sporting fields the world over during the past week.

She wrote on Instagram:

“There can be no denying the high level of sporting excellence being produced by Barbados.

This weekend, I was overwhelmed to see Barbados and Barbadians rise to the top of the sporting pyramid in a number of fields.

Zane Maloney, our very own racing prodigy secured his first FIA Formula 3 victory at Spa yesterday. Zane shook off a worrying crash in his Sprint Race to take the feature race in stunning fashion.

Meanwhile, in Squash, Karen Meakins became a champion by capturing gold in the Over-50 Women’s Final, while Mark Sealy won bronze in the Over 60- Men’s Final of the 2022 WSF World Masters Squash Championship in Poland. Congratulations to them both!

Sada Williams also continued her rich form, securing silver in her Women’s 400m Final at the Lausanne Diamond League, with another amazing run!

The Barbados Royals Women, also won the inaugural 6IXTY Women’s Competition! Shakera Selman take a bow. Your three wickets for 10 runs brought home this historic win for us.

It was also a real joy to see football return to the field with the Republic Cup and the Women’s Super League on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Barbados Football Association continues to make strides as, FIFA recently announced its partnership with the BFA to implement a number of critical development programs both on and off the field to progress the game in areas such as infrastructure, technical development, and administrative education.

As Prime Minister and as a Barbadian, I continue to be extremely proud and supportive of every sporting accomplishment our people continue to achieve. Congratulations to everyone and may you all continue finding success!”

Replying was Bajan cyclist Amber Joseph who struck gold two weeks ago in Lima, Peru. She won the women’s scratch race at the Pan American Cycling Championships, a feat she accomplished once before. In her response to the PM, she wrote, “We all on the grind to make our country proud ???”

And another person commented and said that the PM forgot the Barbados Under-15 cricketers. On Friday, August 26, Barbados captured the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Under-15 Championship after beating the Leeward Islands by 16 runs in the fifth and final round. The match took place at Grenada’s National Stadium.

Holness: Violence gripping the region Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Crime and violence are regional issues, therefore, a collaborative and systematic approach is needed to curtail its rise.

Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness shared the view as he noted that both Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago have been faced with similar challenges relating to the escalation of crime and violence.

Prime Minister Holness was delivering remarks at the opening of the Dr Eric Williams Memorial Library in Port of Spain on Tuesday.

The event was part of Trinidad and Tobago’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Prime Minister Holness is in the country on invitation from T&T Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.

Both Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are celebrating 60 years of Independence this month.

The Jamaican Prime Minister noted: “The challenges of our time from the global financial crises, pandemics, catastrophic weather events, hurricanes and other climate related issues, food, energy and security.

These are particularly difficult times globally, for our regional family, for our local households and communities. And, those charged with leadership have a particularly difficult time but we who are charged with leadership must give leadership.”

Prime Minister Holness said being faced with these challenges, Caribbean nations’ leadership cannot resile in the face of difficulties, but must press on and act in the best interest of its people.

He noted that Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago have increased cooperation in a number of critical areas as part of ongoing strategic dialogue.

As part of these conversations, there has been focus on capacity building through exchange of expertise and experience, including trade and investment, education, security and air services.

Prime Minister Holness added: “We do, however, face a new frontier of challenge and that is violence gripping our nations.

Prime Minister Rowley and myself, I think we had a very good conversation as to the directions governments can take.”

The Jamaican Prime Minister said he’s hopeful that these talks will bear fruit with a greater policy thrust towards treating with the challenges facing both nations.

Former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev Dies At 91 – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has died aged 91.

Mr Gorbachev, who took over in 1985, is best known for opening up the USSR and for his rapprochement with the West, but he was unable to prevent his country collapsing in 1991.

Many Russians blame him and his reformist policies for the country’s demise.

The hospital where he died said he had been suffering from a long and serious illness.

Mr Gorbachev became general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, and de facto leader of the country, at the age of 54.

He was at the time the youngest member of the ruling council known as the Politburo, and was seen as a breath of fresh air after several ageing leaders.

His policy of glasnost, or openness, allowed people to criticise the government in a way which had been previously unthinkable.

But it also unleashed nationalist sentiments in many regions of the country which eventually led to its collapse.

Internationally he reached arms control deals with the US and refused to intervene when eastern European nations rose up against their Communist rulers.

He is seen in the West as an architect of reform who created the conditions for the end of the Cold War.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 “for the leading role he played in the radical changes in East-West relations”.

But in the new Russia that emerged after 1991 he has been on the fringes of politics, focusing on educational and humanitarian projects.

He made one ill-fated attempt to return to political life in 1996, receiving just 0.5% of the vote in presidential elections.

In recent years his health has been in decline and he has been in and out of hospital.

He will be buried in Moscow’s Novodevichy cemetery, the resting place of many prominent Russians, next to his wife Raisa who died in 1999, Tass news agency said.

QEH puts to bed unwarranted panic over 6 moved elective surgeries Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

The Board of Management of Queen Elizabeth Hospital is assuring the public that the Department of Surgery continues to provide the full range of surgical services to the people of Barbados.

This response comes after an article in a section of the media caused some panic amongst citizens about the operations at the QEH as it pertains to elective surgeries and the importance placed upon such.

In an effort to help appease and calm persons especially those awaiting such surgeries, and to remotivate the staff who are diligently carrying out their duties on a day-to-day basis, the QEH explained in a release that however, there are instances when elective surgeries are temporarily postponed due to an excessively high utilization rate for the hospital’s 519 inpatient beds. The most recent example of this occurred on Monday, August 22, when the hospital’s acting Director of Medical Services made a strategic decision to temporarily postpone elective surgeries scheduled for Tuesday, August 23, due to the hospital’s high-bed occupancy. This decision resulted in the rescheduling of six elective cases, and arrangements were immediately put in place to facilitate these elective procedures between Wednesday, August 24, and Saturday, August 27. As such there was no protracted postponement of elective surgeries as was reported in the media.

And the hospital reminded or educated those who are unaware of the full procedure, that “It should be noted that after surgery, in-patient beds are required for patients to fully recover.

“[Therefore,] It would be irresponsible to admit patients for elective surgery when the in-patient bed occupancy rate remains extremely high. Therefore, priority is given to emergency procedures as persons awaiting elective surgery can be safely accommodated at a later date.”

MTWW adds 4 signs to stop accidents at Mangrove junction Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Taking into account the recent spate of accidents at Mangrove junction in St Philip, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources will be erecting a four-way traffic stop at that location, tonight, Tuesday, August 30.

‘Reduce speed signs’ and ‘stop signs’ will be installed at Mangrove Main Road, which is the Four Roads to Airport stretch of the road. Previously, stop signs and reduce speed signs were only placed along the two minor roads at Mangrove and Market Road.

This comes after dashcam footage from a vehicle over the weekend showed a driver along the minor road failing to stop, but instead using a rolling stop technique which resulted in a major smash. According to police reports, despite the look of the accident on video, injuries sustained by those involved were minor.

Deputy Chief Technical Officer (Operations) Philip Tudor said in an effort to improve safety at this location, a decision was taken to install a four-way traffic stop. He said a similar four-way traffic stop had been erected successfully at a junction in the Ivy, St Michael where a number of car accidents had occurred.

Motorists are urged to approach all four legs of the Mangrove junction with caution and to pay close attention to the newly erected signage.

The Ministry thanks the public for its cooperation and encourages all road users to be safe on the road.
