PHILIPSBURG — Today, Thursday, August 11th, 2022, the Honorable Member of Parliament (MP) Ludmila de Weever met with representatives from Royal Caribbean Group (RCG), namely Vice President of Destination Development Joshua Carroll and Manager of Destination Development Mario Egües during their recent visit to St. Maarten.
MP de Weever was delighted to catch up with the team that helped bring the home porting project with Celebrity Cruise Lines to fruition during her tenure in office as Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT). The RCG team was on the island to continue discussions with members of the Council of Ministers and the management of the Harbor Group of Companies.
St. Maarten has long been one of the preferred destinations of cruise passengers with one of the lowest head-tax rates. While this low rate was part of agreements made some 20 years ago, MP De Weever remains positive that continuity exists in government and it should result in a rate more consistent with the rest of the region, which would bring even greater economic benefit to the island as outlined in the pandemic-adjusted economic recovery plan presented in 2020.
“Homeporting helped create the blueprint for the entire industry to safely restart not just in St. Maarten, but in the entire Caribbean and it happened here,” MP De Weever stated. She reemphasized that the event put St. Maarten back in the news on an international scale, thanks in part to the exposure RCG brought through media names such as Emmy award-winning News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg of CBS News, who was present to report on the large-scale cruising restart from the St. Maarten Port, the first to do so in the Western Hemisphere after the shutdown in 2020. In addition, MP De Weever has always stressed the importance of maintaining continuous communication with local and international stakeholders in order to continue seeing progress for the island.

A 15-year-old boy vacationing in Jamaica from the US was shot and injured during an operation by the security forces in Seaview Gardens, St Andrew, on Thursday.
The teenager, whose name is being withheld, is on the honour roll at his school and is an aspiring footballer who lives in Bronx, New York. He was shot in the leg and later hospitalised.
His irate father, Howard Johnson, is demanding answers and that the authorities act quickly to resolve the issue.
“[My son] is on vacation from the USA. He hadn’t seen his mother in how long, and he came to spend some time. He represents his school in football, is a top student ah foreign, and to know this happen to him inna him home country hard fi deal wid,” his father told Loop News on Thursday shortly after arriving on the island.
Johnson is upset that his unarmed son was almost killed by the security forces in a nightmarish scenario that would keep any parent up at night.
“[My son] told me he went to the shop to buy bag juice, and when he heard the shots he began running to his house to safety, then the police fired two shots in the air and say, ‘Freeze’. He stopped, and when he turned around, the police shot him and run down on him to finish him off and he had to cry out…and when dem see the bag juice scatter on the ground, ah that saved him,” Johnson claimed.
The father of four said he would never have imagined that such a scenario could have played out with his son.
“This is exactly the reason I took him from Seaview. All my kids migrated in 2016, this ah his second trip back to Jamaica since that ’cause he wanted to see his mother. The police dem traumatise mi family. Mi little daughter who go down with him to Jamaica is afraid to go outside right now. I might have to get counselling for her,” he said.
He is demanding a full and thorough investigation.
“We want to know if is a soldier or a police do it because mi ah hear conflicting stories, we don’t want this to be covered up,” he said.
Johnson is to meet with the children’s advocate and police investigators on Friday.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has begun probing the shooting incident.
The security forces report an engagement with at least one, possibly two males, one of whom is reported as allegedly pointing a firearm at the members of the security forces. It is reported that of the responding officers, no member of the Jamaica Defence Force fired their weapon but one Jamaica Constabulary Force officer fired his weapon during the incident, INDECOM said.
The 15-year-old boy was conveyed to the hospital with a gunshot injury to his leg.
No weapon was reported to INDECOM by investigators as being recovered from the scene or the injured boy.
INDECOM is urging the cooperation of individuals who may have witnessed the incident to share any information, photos or video footage with the Commission via WhatsApp at (876) 553-5555.

The economic situation appears to be so bad that persons have resorted to stealing car batteries, as the spate of acquisition crimes continues to escalate.
A Tindale Road man is reporting that the battery was stolen from his vehicle, along with a number of other items – including a knapsack containing government IDs, his bank card, and his expired Antigua and Barbuda passport.
The items reportedly were removed from his Toyota Mark-X car, which was parked on Bay Street, Villa.
Meanwhile, one of two batteries was allegedly stolen from the car of a St. George Street man.
Reports are that the man’s white Hyundai truck was parked in front of his residence, where someone used mechanic’s tools to remove the battery guard and terminals from the truck – allowing one of the batteries to be stolen.

CMC- Police in St Vincent and the Grenadines are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a fisherman.
The victim has been identified as Roland Baptiste, 35, of Fitz Hughes. He died on July 1 after being shot about his body with a shotgun on June 27 in Fitz Hughes by an unknown assailant(s).
Baptiste succumbed to his injuries at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the body to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Investigations into Baptiste’s death are ongoing.
Persons with information that can assist with this investigation are encouraged to contact the police.
Baptiste’s death marks the twenty-third homicide reported for 2022.

Days after stabbing his ex-wife – 24-year-old Cindy Ramchandar – to death, the suspect, Suraj Ganpat, turned himself in on Thursday. This was confirmed by Regional Commander Boodnarine Persaud.
Ramchandar had severed the relationship and had moved out of East Canje and back to her Corentyne home about two months before her demise.
Notwithstanding that, Ganpat accused the woman of infidelity.
It was reported that the now dead woman ended the relationship after she had been constantly abused by Ganpat. However, on Monday, Ramchandar of Number 47 Village, Corentyne, left her home on her electric bike to drop off her three-year-old niece at her parent’s home, which is one street away.
While she was in front of the child’s mother’s home, Ganpat reportedly drove up and struck her off the bike. He reportedly exited the car, attacked the woman with a knife, and stabbed her several times before fleeing the scene. The injured woman was picked up and taken to the Skeldon Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The couple had no children.

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is of the strong view that pursuing greater youth participation at all levels of Government is key to effective national development. Having rolled out one of the youngest political slates in the history of Antigua and Barbuda, the Party will give youth voices a platform.
The UPP is proud to announce that we will immediately move to increase youth representation at all levels of government, targeting at least:
– 25% in the Senate
– 25% across All Boards
– 10% of Board Chairs or Vice Chairs
– 25% on all major committees
The UPP also commits to fostering deeper cooperation with existing youth bodies.
The UPP Government will meet with the National Youth Council at least once per quarter to account for our performance, capture their concerns and give consideration to their recommendations.
The UPP Government will also ensure that the National Youth Parliament is empowered to make a greater contribution to national development. We will give consideration to recommendations and bills presented by the National Youth Parliament.
