El gobernador de Puerto Rico, Pedro R. Pierluisi, junto al administrador de la Administración del Desarrollo Socioeconómico de la Familia (ADSEF), Alberto Fradera Vázquez, anunciaron hoy un nuevo desembolso del programa de asistencia alimentaria por pandemia (P-EBT, por sus siglas en inglés) que impactará a más familias puertorriqueñas, incluyendo aquellas con infantes menores de cinco años.

Se trata del P-EBT de verano y P-EBT Verano Child Care, mediante los cuales se hará un solo desembolso de $455 por menor. Al igual que en fases anteriores, el P-EBT de verano es para estudiantes matriculados en escuelas públicas o privadas que reciben servicios de comedor escolar por parte del Departamento de Educación (DE). Les llegará automático a quienes lo han solicitado anteriormente o son participantes del Programa de Ayuda Nutricional (PAN).

Mientras, el P-EBT Verano Child Care es dirigido a infantes de cinco años o menos que, igualmente, reciben el PAN, pero que no recibieron el P-EBT regular. 

“Estimamos que más de 76,000 menores entre 0 y 5 años van a recibir la ayuda, mientras que unos 304,000 son elegibles para el P-EBT de verano. Con estos desembolsos aportamos a que nuestras familias más necesitadas puedan proveer mejores oportunidades de alimentación para sus hijos e hijas, con un mejor acceso a alimentos saludables, variados y balanceados. Todo ello es parte de nuestro continuo esfuerzo por buscar alternativas que redunden en un alivio al bolsillo de nuestras familias que más lo necesitan”, sostuvo el gobernador Pierluisi.

Para el primer programa hay $139 millones asignados, mientras que para el segundo hay $18 millones, lo que equivale a $157 millones en total, explicó el primer ejecutivo.

Por su parte, la secretaria del Departamento de la Familia, Carmen Ana González Magaz,   sostuvo que “una de nuestras prioridades en el Departamento es proveer ayudas para el desarrollo pleno de los niños de familias en situaciones de vulnerabilidad y la alimentación adecuada es clave para ello. Con este desembolso aportamos a que las personas tengan un mejor acceso a alimentos saludables, variados y balanceados”. 

Asimismo, el administrador de ADSEF explicó que “en ambos casos, las familias lo recibirán de manera automática, ya sea porque se beneficiaron de otras emisiones de P-EBT o porque son participantes del PAN. En el caso de los infantes, es únicamente para participantes del PAN. No obstante, en el caso del P-EBT de verano hay personas que aún no han solicitado otras fases del programa y les exhortamos a que accedan a ADSEF Digital en PR.GOV y completen el trámite para recibir la asistencia alimentaria por la pandemia”.

Fradera Vázquez indicó que las emisiones se harán de acuerdo al último dígito del número de Seguro Social de los participantes, conforme al siguiente calendario:

Este nuevo desembolso de asistencia alimentaria por la pandemia se suma a los que han sido distribuidos por ADSEF recientemente. Al momento, se han beneficiado más de 241,027 estudiantes provenientes de 845 escuelas públicas e instituciones educativas privadas, lo que equivale a un impacto económico de $62,959,172.

(MODERNA COVID-19 VACCINE NOW AVAILABLE AT THE VILLA POLYCLINIC)

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment would like to thank the Government of Denmark for a donation of 5000 doses of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines to Antigua and Barbuda.

Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Alfred Athill received the donation on behalf of the Ministry.

Persons desirous of receiving the Moderna vaccine can avail themselves at the Villa Polyclinic from Mondays through to Thursdays from 8am to 4:30 pm and on Fridays from 8am to 3pm as of July 28th, 2022.

The Ministry would also like to advise citizens and residents that the Pfizer Vaccines which are remaining in Antigua and Barbuda will be expiring at the end of this month.

Persons who prefer to have the pfizer vaccine as their first dose, second dose or booster doses are encouraged to do so before the vaccines expire on July 31st, 2022.

Vaccines are administered at the Villa Polyclinic and the other main Health Centers on Mondays to Thursdays from 8am to 4:30pm and on Fridays from 8am to 3pm.

In addition, COVID-19 vaccines will be administered this weekend, Saturday 30th July 2022 at the Villa Polyclinic from 9am to 3pm.

U.S.-based photographer and owner of Brookes Media, Mark Brookes, has teamed up with local volunteer charity, Do-Nation Foundation, to help people in need.

Born in Antigua and Barbuda, Brookes has lived in New York for most of his life. A few months ago, he came to Saint Lucia on vacation and discussed with his sister that he would be returning for Carnival this year.

Prior to his return in July, he called a few friends to find out which charitable organizations he could help.

“The first person I spoke to online told me about the Boys’ Training Centre,” said Brookes.

“I reached out to the management and we decided on a barbecue, which everyone enjoyed.”

Brookes said a donation of printed shirts from his friend’s company — Public Parking — and a football was made to the youngsters at the Massade-based rehabilitation centre.

“In life, I think we all have to look out for each other. We all have bad days and good days. I do all of this in the name of my mom, Dorothy, who passed away in December 2020. She never liked to see people struggle,” he explained.

Brookes said his sister, Keisha, who owns an all-natural soap company, has decided tocollaborate with him to ship stuff down to Saint Lucia for the Boys’ Training Centre. Since she also has a lip gloss company, lip gloss will also be shipped down for young ladies.

“I’ll also be shipping down football uniforms and other items to the Boys’ Training Centre,” he added.

Brookes plans to return to Saint Lucia in December to help in any way he can. He said thathelping those in need was one of the many important lessons his mother taught him and his siblings as children.

“Even though I live paycheck to paycheck, every once in a while I can squeeze something out to help someone,” said Brookes.

Meanwhile, Diane Felicien, Do-Nation Foundation’s CEO/Founder, said Do-Nation Foundationis delighted to collaborate with Brookes Media, having been introduced to Brookes by one of Do-Nation Foundation’s members.

“We are delighted to have this relationship, as we believe in SDG Number 17, which is‘Partnerships for the Goals’,” said Felicien. “The main goal of Do-Nation Foundation is working towards changing the lives of our citizens, one person at a time.”

Felicien noted that Do-Nation Foundation has been able to achieve its goals through its recently-formed relationship with Brookes by helping a mother and father, both of whom are differently- able due to injuries they sustained. In the first instance, a mother, whose electricity supply was disconnected, had her bills paid and was reconnected. In the other instance, groceries were provided for a father and his son.

“We continue to seek ways in which we can help people and always encourage partnerships,” Felicien said. “That’s the only way we can achieve our goals. Therefore, we are grateful for the partnership with Mr. Brookes and look forward to a lot more in the future.”
