Trinbago Knight Riders 148/7 (Webster 58, Seifert 34 ; Joseph 4/17, Williams 1/23) beat Saint Lucia Kings 143/9 (Primus 38, Deyal 35; Hosein 4/13, Seales 2/38,) by 3 wickets.

A brilliant bowling spell from Akeal Hosein saw Trinbago Knight Riders kick off their 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign with a victory over last year’s finalists, Saint Lucia Kings, by three wickets.

The Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field, Hosein taking frequent wickets to restrict Saint Lucia Kings to 143/9, despite some big hitting from batter Roshon Primus towards the end of the innings.

Trinbago Knight Riders got off to a tough start themselves, losing two early wickets before a commanding innings from Tion Webster (58) helped to guide them to victory with four balls to spare.

Saint Lucia Kings had got off to a troublesome start as they lost openers Johnson Charles and Leroy Lugg in the batting powerplay. Mark Deyal began to rebuild with some fluent batting, but the 13th over proved to be pivotal as Hosein took three wickets, including that of Deyal and captain Roston Chase. The Kings continued to lose wickets, yet a late flurry of boundaries from Primus ultimately saw them reach 143/9.

Trinbago Knight Riders suffered major setbacks early in their chase, losing the wickets of Sunil Narine and Nicholas Pooran, as both batters were caught out trying to clear the boundary. Opener Webster led the recovery, scoring 58 runs from 45 balls, with support being provided by partner Tim Seifert. However, the Saint Lucia Kings fought back by taking the wicket of Webster, shortly followed by that of Andre Russell, an outstanding catch from Lugg sending him back to the pavilion.

It looked like Seifert and captain Kieron Pollard would take the Knight Riders to victory, but Alzarri Joseph dismissed both in the nineteenth over, before striking with his final ball to dismiss Seekkugge Prasanna and set up a nervy finish. In the end Anderson Phillip struck a six to take the Knight Riders across the line.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a flash flood watch for the central parishes of the island.

According to BMS, the tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic has moved closer to the eastern Caribbean resulting in a decrease in wind speeds across Barbados. This has allowed localized activity to develop across the island.

As a result, maximum rainfall accumulations of 25.0 to 50.0 mm in heavy to violent showers are expected during the afternoon.

The alert is valid from 2:15 pm and will be terminated at 6 pm or sooner if conditions warrant.

National Youth Steel Orchestra needs a home Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

With the numbers in the National Youth Steel Orchestra increasing, a home is needed says musical director Lowrey Worrell.

Worrell appealed for private sector assistance during a press conference at the National Cultural Foundation’s (NCF) West Terrace, St Michael headquarters on Wednesday.

The musical director reported the orchestra now has over 90 members, with an upsurge in applicants for the beginner’s programme and the orchestra following their stellar performances during the Crop Over Festival.

“We need the investment of private Barbados – the private sector – because pans are not cheap and as the programme is growing. We do need more pans, we do need more infrastructure. We are going to run out of space shortly. I mean St Leonard’s is a school, [but] we want to have our own home and it aids in better tutorship. We need to increase the tutors as the group is growing,” Worrell disclosed.

He acknowledged that the NCF was a major contributor to the orchestra’s success [the NCF invested $250, 000 in developmental programmes during this year’s Crop Over season] but stressed that private sector investment was also necessary.

“NCF has shown their support, [we] just need other persons to show their support.”

“We are being seen and being heard. after Pandemonium I was contacted by CEO of Republic Bank Exodus who said he watched the [Republic Bank Pandemonium]. He was amazed by the youngsters, and that is Trinidad the mecca of pan….If they can see the value, if Canada can see the value, it means the rest of the world can see the value in what we are doing,” Worrell insisted.

The musical director expressed that he was shocked by the overwhelming response to the orchestra at the National Botanical Gardens for Pandemonium. He pointed out that was an increased interest in the instrument in schools and concluded that the NCF’s developmental programme has thus been successful.

“The NCF has given us the task of developing pan through our students or through the community….[Through] the Pans In The School Programme which was initiated this year by the NCF and the music officer Kevin Moore, we have been able to draw from the school to include those members in the National Steel Orchestra, which does show that development of pan through the schools can work and it can aid wider country.”

“I am very pleased to say that the pan program is growing. From out of [Republic Bank] Pandemonium, we have had persons that have called and started in the beginner’s programme and also joined the orchestra because they liked what they saw,” Worrell added.
