Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

Scrap-iron dealers’ head warns of more protests

President of the TT Scrap Iron Dealers Association Allan Ferguson.

President of the TT Scrap Iron Dealers Association (TTSIDA) Allan Ferguson has issued a veiled threat about further disturbances if the government fails to meet and address its concerns.

He was spealking immediately after thanking the police for helping to ensure an incident-free motorcade on Friday,

The motorcade, held to protest the government’s temporary ban on scrap-iron export, started at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary and ended at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, at around 3 pm.

Although a relatively small number of vehicles took part, it is believed to have contributed to increased traffic in and around the capital.

Ferguson briefly addressed participants and the media, and closed his comments with a stark but ambiguous warning.

“Keep gas in your vehicles,” he said. “Do not use out all your gas, because we coming soon, because Parliament opening just now.”

Newsday later asked Ferguson, the uncontested president of the association since 2011, to expound on his comments. He replied, “We plan to mobilise all of civil society. We will announce the plans in time to come.”

He said, however, that it will not be in the form of another motorcade.

In his address, Ferguson accused the government of making secret plans for the industry, which he said will ultimately benefit foreign companies and individuals.

“Our association, and I as president, I am trying to meet with the government to make this industry open back, and we are trying very hard to get that meeting with them.

“And I just want to ask the question: who is the person, who is the company in InvesTT that you all want to give this industry to?”

InvesTT is a state agency created to provide particularly foreign organisations seeking to invest in TT markets with expertise and services.

“Trinidad and Tobago, you ask the question, too; why it is they was doing all the studies in reference (to) how much material it have? Why they doing all that?

“They doing all that now, as we make this journey to open the industry, (to) give it to a company from foreign. Well, I’m telling them, forget about that.”

The motorcade is one of several protests put on by the TTSIDA, scrap-iron dealers and workers coming out of the government’s announcement last month of a ban on exports for six months, owing to an upsurge in the theft of copper and other valuable materials belonging to the State and private citizens.

Fiery protests were staged in Claxton Bay almost immediately after the ban was announced, followed more recently by an early-morning blockade on the northbound lane of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, resulting in standstill traffic.

US$20M oil and gas training centre opens at Lusignan

3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence located at Lusignan, ECD

Guyana’s first premier oil and gas training centre was officially opened on Friday, and according to Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips, Guyanese can now benefit from an assortment of cutting-edge capacity-building courses without having to leave the country.

Located at Lusignan on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence is a joint venture between two Guyanese companies – Orinduik Development Incorporated and Windsor Technologies – and US-based 3t EnerMech, which is a strategic alliance between 3t Energy Group and EnerMech.

This Training Centre of Excellence combines expert instruction in-classroom training facilities, blended learning software and technology, and fully immersive simulators for high-hazard activity learning to empower and provide Guyanese with key skills and training certifications that are required to work in the offshore environment.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Phillips pointed out that this ground-breaking facility would bring immense benefits to Guyanese. He noted that since the discovery of oil offshore, Guyana has undergone transformational changes to create a conducive environment for the development of the petroleum sector, and he said the abundant and life-changing opportunities that the industry offers must not bypass Guyanese.

Prime Minister Brig (ret’d) Mark Phillips, Cabinet Ministers and other officials join representatives from 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday

“A crucial factor to the success of our nation lies in our people. We must ensure that we utilise the benefits of the oil and gas sector to build a bright future for this generation, the next generation of Guyanese, and beyond. To do that, we must undertake a culture of ownership, a culture where our local content – our people – can thrive, and that includes within the workplace itself,” Phillips stated.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government has been continuously engaging in the training of the local workforce to occupy important positions in the oil and gas sector and contribute to the building of this sector, and ultimately the development of Guyana.

To this end, he posited that the establishment of this training facility strengthens a PPP manifesto promise to train thousands of Guyanese at every level to create a national corps of managers and workforce to chart the future direction and effectively manage all the sectors in the country.

“With you being the first entity with approval to deliver Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation-accredited training to the oil and gas sector in Guyana, our human resources are now strengthened at a global standard to actively and competently participate in the building of this new and abundant area of our country.

“With an industry that requires high skills and knowledge, it is reassuring to know that these capacities can be imparted to our people without having to leave their home soil,” the PM noted.

Previously, Guyanese would have had to travel to the United States, the United Kingdom, or even Trinidad and Tobago to undergo training and secure the necessary certification to work in the oil and gas sector here. These include Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) and Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) accreditations.

According to Phillips, these certifications will place Guyanese among the top qualified players in the global oil and gas industry, thus further adding to Guyana’s growing potential as a powerhouse in the sector.

A section of 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence

While it has now officially opened, 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence has been operating in Guyana over the past three years, and offering over 500 courses specifically designed to upscale the oil and gas sector.

EnerMech’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Christian Brown, explained that this facility is the first regional ECITB-accredited centre, and is also Guyana’s first OPITO-approved facility.

“The doors are wide open now to do all the training we need, not only for Guyana, but for the region here, within Georgetown. It’s a pivotal time, because now, with this centre, we can train Guyanese people in the roles across many skills, many competencies, to support all of the investments that are going within our oil and gas sector,” Brown posited.

In addition to the current skills and competency training being offered, the centre would be adding Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET), and Firefighting and Emergency Response Training as well to its accreditation services.

The EnerMech CEO outlined that more capital, resources and training would be added to make sure the local oil and gas industry’s needs are met, while simultaneously developing the Guyanese talent pool and backing the country with a qualified workforce.

Meanwhile, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat pointed out that Guyana is blessed with human resources, and underscored the need to develop this pool to fully realise local content.“We are never going to achieve true local content if we don’t develop our human capital, our local capacity at the Private Sector level, so that Guyanese can benefit from the oil and gas sector too. Because that is the cry that resonates throughout the entire country as we travel around, and rightly so,” he stated.

The Minister added, “Today is a true example of local content. Today is a true example of how Guyanese are starting to establish themselves in the oil and gas sector along with international partners, because we need the expertise, we need the investments, and we need the technology. And that is why we have always, as a Government, encouraged our local businesses, our local entrepreneurs, to join in partnership in joint ventures and consortiums, and to work with foreign investors to build facilities as this one.”

In addition to opening on Friday, 3t EnerMech Guyana Training Centre of Excellence also held the graduation of its first group of students. The 18 students, who took the courses through the Guyana Government’s GOAL initiative, graduated with the ECITB Level 2 certificate. One-third of those graduates are females.

PM Phillips charged the group of young Guyanese to put their skills to use.“I congratulate the first cohort of participants who underwent training at this facility. May you take your skills and put them to their fullest use as you proceed in your daily tasks of helping to build a better Guyana.”

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali at the Century 21 Guyana finals of the Quran Recitation Competition

For the world to achieve better countries and communities, there must first be an ultimate determination in the hearts of people to block out all evil behaviour.

This was the message shared by President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali Friday evening, as he addressed the Century 21 Guyana finals of the Quran Recitation Competition, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).

President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali with a participant at the Century 21 Guyana finals of the Quran Recitation Competition

President Ali said reciting the Quran serves as a guide to one’s life, pointing persons to what is right and wholesome.

Recital of the Quran, the Head of State emphasised, is integral to the practice of Islam.

The president, who is also a Muslim, noted that the holy book is the secret text of Islam. He said Muslims believe it holds mighty words that are instructive and powerful.

“It teaches us how to live, it allows us to pass on our faith to future generations. As Muslims we are promised that Allah will find favour with and will reward the practice of reciting the Quran.”

President Ali believes that recital of the Quran allows believers to have a closer communication with Allah (God) and invites the intersession of the Creator into their lives.

Moreover, he said reading the holy book allows one to lay all their cares and troubles on the Creator, and make them free from distraction and intrusions of thoughts and actions.

“It’s not only about recitation, its about bringing us in proximity with God through the message. And if we don’t feel after recitation that we are close in proximity then maybe we need to revisit the intention. Recitation reinforces the need for us to comply with the directives of God,” he added.

Meanwhile, Friday’s session of the Quran Recitation Competition saw a number of representatives from several masjids across the country.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is projecting Saint Lucia’s economy will realize the highest GDP growth among Eastern Caribbean Currency Union [ECCU] Member States in 2022.

The sound fiscal policies rooted in the Pierre Administration’s maiden Budget of 2022/23 have set Saint Lucia on course to grow by up to 8% this year.

ECLAC’s projections have been published in its Annual Report: Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean 2022: Trends and challenges of investing for a sustainable and inclusive recovery

Saint Lucia’s accelerated GDP growth trajectory of 8% outpaces that of Barbados and the ECCU Member States.

Moreover, in the first eight months of 2022, Hon. Pierre and his Cabinet, have engaged various investors who have expressed interest in Saint Lucia and want to develop and expand accommodation properties and introduce internationally recognized hotel brands to the island.

The Prime Minister has confirmed the prospective value of these development proposals exceed $320 million.

Domestically, two routine economic surveys have each produced encouraging conclusions on Saint Lucia’s economic performance during the first quarter of 2022.

The quarterly Labour Force survey conducted by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) for the period January to March of this year estimated the national unemployment rate stood at 16.1%.

Before 2019 and the ensuing economic impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, first-quarter unemployment levels have consistently remained above 20% going back more than six (6) years.

The Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and its vast membership collectively hire tens of thousands of Saint Lucians. In July, the Chamber published its Business Performance Survey which assessed the performance of its members for the (first quarter) period of January to March of 2022.

The results of the Chamber’s survey correspond with the CSO’s first-quarter estimates and also underpin Saint Lucia’s economic resilience in the face of various external pressures and shocks.

59% of the Chamber’s membership made more money between January and March of 2022 when compared to the same period last year.
83% of the Chamber’s membership retained and added more jobs during the first quarter of this year.
59% of Businesses forecast increased revenue for the period April to June, 2022.
71% of businesses forecast increased profitability over the next 12 months.

According to the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. Brian Louisy,

Business confidence appears to be on the rise with 66% of respondents forecasting increased turnover over the next twelve months while 71% of respondents forecast an increase in business profitability over the same period while only 29% report worsened cash flow relative to the previous quarter.”

The CSO estimated the island’s Labour Force for the period January to March at approximately 104,262 workers. More than 83% of Saint Lucia’s Labour Force were employed during the first quarter of this year.

Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre hopes the implementation of targeted fiscal policies by his Administration, in concert with the rollout of his innovative Youth Economy agency, will create a vibrant and more conducive economic space that encourages private sector expansion and also decisively address youth unemployment.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Le Nouvelliste

<>

<< Menm si chemen lajan long

Menm sil chaje ak pikan

Olye mwen mouri p?v nan vim

<< Yo diw voye Jezi mouri pou peche gen peche pi r?d

Brinks looks a safe bet in Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths Classic Loop Jamaica

Jamaica Derby runner-up BRINKS is the top classic-placed horse in Saturday’s nine-and-a-half furlong Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths Classic at Caymanas Park.

With classic winners ruled out by conditions, BRINKS with jockey Reyan Lewis should start an overwhelming favourite as the third-highest rated local-bred three-year-old in the country.

Though Gary Subratie’s D HEAD CORNERSTONE finished fourth in the derby, he was 22 lengths behind BRINKS, thoroughly outclassed by Ian Parsard’s charge. Anthony Nunes’ MORIMOTO, who raced fourth for most of the derby’s 12 furlongs, lost his spot to D HEAD CORNERSTONE close home.

Preparing for the derby, BRINKS clocked 1:12.2 for six furlongs the previous Sunday and reproduced his exercise form by keeping pace with ATOMICA and BLUE VINYL, straightening two and a half lengths third, before staying on to successfully fight for the runner-up spot.

BRINKS shares topweight 126lb with old rival PERFECT BREW, who bypassed the derby to beat non-winners of two races and followed up two weeks later in a similar restricted event for non-winners of three and/or four races.

PERFECT BREW had finished ahead of third-place BRINKS when both were beaten by the filly GOLDEN WATTLE in last December’s Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes at a mile. Richard Azan’s runner was also in front of fifth-place BRINKS when claiming second to BLUE VINYL in April’s Kingston Guineas prep at seven and a half furlongs.

However, since fitted with cheek pieces for the 2000 Guineas in which he beat PERFECT BREW out of sight as the runner-up, BRINKS has shown marked improvement, finishing second in last month’s derby, joining winner ATOMICA in turning the tables on St Leger-winner BLUE VINYL.

Though PERFECT BREW is on a hat-trick, his back-to-back wins were against questionable opposition, struggling with 117lb on last to outbattle sprinter and stablemate, POWER RANKING, at seven and a half furlongs.

BRINKS impressed at exercise last Sunday, galloping six furlongs in 1:14.4. His pace should be too strong for UNRULY DUDE to unsettle, giving the closers no chance against him.

The Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths Classic is the eighth of 10 races scheduled. First post is noon.
