WHO: COVID end ‘in sight’, deaths at lowest since March 2020 Loop Jamaica

The head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday that the number of coronavirus deaths worldwide last week was the lowest reported in the pandemic since March 2020, marking what could be a turning point in the years-long global outbreak.

At a press briefing in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the world has never been in a better position to stop COVID-19.

“We are not there yet, but the end is in sight,” he said, comparing the effort to that made by a marathon runner nearing the finish line. “Now is the worst time to stop running,” he said. “Now is the time to run harder and make sure we cross the line and reap all the rewards of our hard work.”

In its weekly report on the pandemic, the UN health agency said deaths fell by 22 per cent in the past week, at just over 11,000 reported worldwide. There were 3.1 million new cases, a drop of 28 per cent, continuing a weeks-long decline in the disease in every part of the world.

Still, the WHO warned that relaxed COVID testing and surveillance in many countries means that many cases are going unnoticed. The agency issued a set of policy briefs for governments to strengthen their efforts against the coronavirus ahead of the expected winter surge of COVID-19, warning that new variants could yet undo the progress made to date.

“If we don’t take this opportunity now, we run the risk of more variants, more deaths, more disruption, and more uncertainty,” Tedros said.

The WHO reported that the omicron subvariant BA.5 continues to dominate globally and comprised nearly 90 per cent of virus samples shared with the world’s biggest public database. In recent weeks, regulatory authorities in Europe, the US and elsewhere have cleared tweaked vaccines that target both the original coronavirus and later variants including BA.5.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on COVID-19, said the organisation expected future waves of the disease, but was hopeful those would not cause many deaths.

Meanwhile, in China, residents of a city in the country’s far western Xinjiang region have said they are experiencing hunger, forced quarantines and dwindling supplies of medicine and daily necessities after more than 40 days in a lockdown prompted by COVID-19.

Hundreds of posts from Ghulja riveted users of Chinese social media last week, with residents sharing videos of empty refrigerators, feverish children and people shouting from their windows.

On Monday, local police announced the arrests of six people for “spreading rumours” about the lockdown, including posts about a dead child and an alleged suicide, which they said “incited opposition” and “disrupted social order.”

Leaked directives from government offices show that workers are being ordered to avoid negative information and spread “positive energy” instead. One directed state media to film “smiling seniors” and “children having fun” in neighbourhoods emerging from the lockdown.

The government has ordered mass testing and district lockdowns in cities across China in recent weeks, from Sanya on tropical Hainan island to southwest Chengdu, to the northern port city of Dalian.

There is no official word yet on the cause of Wednesday’s fire at Khemlani Mart in Manor Centre, located in Constant Spring, St Andrew.

However, businessman Steve Khemlani suspects that blown Jamaica Public Service transformers to the back of the building may have caused the fire.

Speaking to the media while firefighters worked to contain the blaze at his business establishment on Wednesday, Khemlani said he was alerted to the fire before 7am.

No idea yet as to the loss as a result of the fire, he was up to late morning hoping that firefighters could bring the fire under control.

On Wednesday, the Jamaica Fire Brigade responded with three units but had to call in four more units for assistance. The fire was still not under control up to late morning, but it had been restricted to the back of the building.

Fletcher leads Patriots to comfortable victory over Jamaica Tallawahs Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Jamaica Tallawahs suffered their third defeat of the men’s edition of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) following an eight-wicket defeat against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots under the Duckworth/Lewis method in Trinidad on Wednesday.

Sent in to bat at the Queen’s Park Oval, the Tallawahs were restricted to 139 for five off their allotted 20 overs despite getting a good start from the opening pair of Brandon King and Kennar Lewis.

Set a reduced target of 113 from 15 overs because of rain, Andre Fletcher scored 45 not out to lead the Patriots to a comfortable victory. They ended on 113 for two with 15 balls remaining.

Earlier, King and Lewis scored 43 runs in the first four overs to hand the Tallawahs a fast start.

The spin of Akila Dananjaya and Rashid Khan got the Patriots back into the game by taking wickets and restricting runs, before a late show from all-rounder Raymon Reifer took the Tallawahs to 139.

Khan broke the opening partnership in the Powerplay by dismissing Lewis for 24.

Skipper Rovman Powell was then run out for six after a brilliant piece of fielding from youngster Dewald Brevis to put the Tallawahs in trouble. However, a late 39-run partnership between Reifer and Fabian Allen managed to add some respectability to the score.

Reifer hammered 40 not out from 26 balls while Allen scored 23 from 24 balls.

In their chase of the reduced target of 113 from 15 overs, the Patriots raced to 49 without loss after five overs, with Fletcher and Lewis proving destructive.

Imad Wasim struck with the first ball of his spell, removing Lewis for 20. However, Darren Bravo came in and formed a 55-run partnership with Fletcher to help take the Patriots home.

Darren Bravo scored 39 from 21 balls with three fours and three sixes, while Fletcher also hit three fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 45.

The Patriots now draw level with the Tallawahs, which are still in second place in the six-team table courtesy of a better net run rate. Both teams have six points with the third-place Patriots playing one game more.

Barbados Royals are way out front with a maximum of 12 points from six games.

Summarised scores: Jamaica Tallawahs 139-5 (20 overs) (Raymon Reifer 40 not out, Kennar Lewis 24; Rashid Khan 1-8, Sherfane Rutherford 1-11).

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 113/2 (Revised target of 113 from 15 overs) (Andre Fletcher 45 not out, Darren Bravo 39; Fabian Allen 1-19, Imad Wasim 1-19) .

Black Immigrant Daily News

Tourism is growing and thriving in Saint Lucia as the winter vacation season approaches, according to the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority.

This year to date has seen record-breaking visitor arrivals, the return of events, and a significant number of tourism developments.

“Our record-breaking tourism figures from July, paired with our successful Carnival events this summer, have set the stage for what is shaping up to be an incredible winter tourism season for Saint Lucia,” said Tourism Minister Hon. Dr. Ernest Hilaire.

“Our local community is engaged and we’re welcoming visitors with new tourism opportunities, our renowned cuisine, and most importantly, our famous Saint Lucian hospitality.”

Breaking Records with International Visitors

In July 2022, Saint Lucia recorded more than 39,000 visitors, the most outstanding performance and the largest number of stayover arrivals in any one-month period since the Covid crisis began.

By the end of July, Saint Lucia had recovered 80% of 2019 arrivals from global markets.

Additionally:● The U.S. had its highest ever arrivals, surpassing 2019 levels for five out of seven months from January through July, four of which were record-breaking. The final August figure is expected to be similarly strong.

● The European market has been eager to return to Saint Lucia as well. The UK surpassed 2019 levels in March and April and was shy of July 2019 arrivals by just 3%.

● These arrival figures are significant because they illustrate that tourism in Saint Lucia is not only back, it is indeed growing and thriving.

● In addition, the Saint Lucia independent culinary and restaurant sector reported that July was their best performing month this year.

Airlift from international markets has been exceptional, reflecting the airlines’ confidence in the recovery of our island.

This summer, Saint Lucia had 72% more seats than in 2021 and surpassed 2019 levels by 9%. Since 2019 was a record- breaking year, this signals that Saint Lucia’s airlift is extremely strong.

We continue to work closely with the airlines to increase the frequency of flights from our key feeder markets – and to also introduce airlift from new cities.

SAINT LUCIA IN DEMAND: EVENTS ON THE RISE

The joyous sound of Saint Lucia Carnival was heard around the Caribbean and the world this summer.

Saint Lucia welcomed more than ten thousand visitors during Carnival festivities, soaking up the return of this beloved cultural event.

This was the first major international event since the pandemic, and it set the stage for the return of other events, such as the much-anticipated Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts festival.

As previously announced, the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival will return from May 5 to 14, 2023 after a three-year hiatus.

The festival will return to its original format, including R&B, hip hop, reggae, and Latin music – as well as a showcase of local artists. The lineup promises to be exciting and will be announced to the public soon. It will be a must-see event for all music fans.

TOURISM DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS

Saint Lucia is continuously providing new vacation options for visitors and developing experiences that showcase Saint Lucian culture and also involve our local communities in tourism activities.

We’re thrilled that our rapidly expanded adventure offerings recently landed us the designation as the Caribbean’s Leading Adventure destination by the WorldTravel Awards.

We recently added more ATV Experiences, and off-the-beaten-path activities like our Three Peak Challenge which involves the climbing of both Piton mountains and Mount Gimie.

Saint Lucia is a hot spot for hotel growth, with several international brands committing to new hotels, and developments in our locally-owned sector and hotel expansions.

A few highlights include the new Sol Sanctum boutique resort; Zoëtry Marigot Bay St. Lucia opening on December 1 as the first AMR Collection resort on the island; and in March 2023, the East Winds resort will debut a major expansion with 48 new rooms and a renovation of 26 cottages.

STRONG GLOBAL MARKETING EFFORTS

Our teams in Saint Lucia and around the world work 24/7 every day of the year to market Saint Lucia to international audiences.

Saint Lucia attracts visitors for its renowned diving and adventure, romance experiences, weddings and honeymoons, and family travel.

Our sales, marketing, public relations, and advertising teams study the tourism trends in our key markets and develop creative programs that make Saint Lucia stand out among the crowded Caribbean and warm-weather vacation market.

These programs inspire first-time and repeat visitors to experience our diverse and authentic activities like the rainforest, the mud baths, and our beloved Pitons; our truly one-of-a-kind resorts; and our welcoming people.

For example, our sales road shows were back in force this summer in the U.S., Canada, and UK.

These immersive experiences brought the island’s culture, music, and cuisine to major cities.

As the winter tourism season approaches, Saint Lucia Tourism Authority will continue to work with local and international partners to enhance the island’s reputation and grow visitor arrivals.

Comisión de Desarrollo Cooperativo y FIDECOOP anuncian acuerdo en pro del desarrollo de emprendedores

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV
