Dr. Shivon Belle Jarvis, Head of Pediatrics at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, is warning the public against the spread of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease.

Dr. Belle Jarvis is reminding parents, guardians and teachers that this is the time of year when medical professionals expect to see an increase in cases of this illness.

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease is a very contagious – although non-severe – illness that is caused by a virus. It primarily affects children under the age of 5 years, but can affect anyone, the doctor says.

Symptoms of this disease last for seven to 10 days, and they include fever; sores to the mouth; skin rashes, including to the palms, soles, buttocks and knees; sore throat; irritability; and decreased appetite.

Dr. Belle Jarvis advises parents to be on the lookout for some red flags: dehydration; reduced levels of alertness; symptoms persisting beyond 10 days; and a fever that lasts more than three days.

To effectively fight this disease, she says persons should wash their hands regularly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds; clean frequently touched surfaces, such as door knobs and desks; and keep children at home when they are ill.

She also advises that pre-school teachers use gloves when changing diapers.

U.S. Embassy Bridgetown Resumes Processing of Routine In-person Appointments in All Nonimmigrant Visa Categories

The U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown is pleased to resume processing of routine in-person appointments in all Nonimmigrant visa categories starting in September 2022.

To schedule an appointment, please visit our website at bb.usembassy.gov/visas.

The Department of State has authorized consular officers to waive the in-person interview requirement for certain categories of Nonimmigrant visa applicants through 31 December 2022.

This new authorization applies to travelers applying for F, H-1, H-3, H-4, non-blanket L, M, O, P, Q, and academic J visas who were previously issued any type of visa, if they are applying for a visa in their country of nationality or residence.

This authorization does not apply to applicants who have a previous refusal that was not subsequently waived or overcome.

Adjudicating consular officers may request an in-person interview if additional information is required from applicants.

Applicants renewing any visa within 48 months of expiration also continue to be eligible for interview waiver.

Due to reduced staffing and numerous pandemic-related disruptions to our operations since March 2020, demand is high for B1/B2 tourism and business visas and wait times may be lengthy for appointments in this category at the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown. DAVID Abdulah, Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) leader, has lost his 96-year-old mother Mariko Abdulah, who died on Wednesday, he told Newsday on Thursday.

“My mother was 96. She was 96 in June gone. She died yesterday morning, quietly and peacefully, after a short illness.”

Mariko had been married for 69 years to Abdulah’s father, retired Anglican bishop of TT Clive Abdulah, who survives her, along with their three sons – David, Kenneth and Gregory.

“She passed away two days after celebrating her 69th wedding anniversary,” Abdulah said.

He said his mother had been born in Vancouver, Canada, to Japanese parents.

“She was a professional social worker,” he related. She had degrees in this field from the University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario, which he said had been “a significant feat” for her to achieve just after World War II.

Saying his father had become TT’s first local Anglican bishop in 1970 – a position he held until retiring in 1993 – Abdulah said his mother had been active in church life in TT for many years, among many other activities.

“My mother was a founding member of the Rape Crisis Centre, where she also helped as a counsellor. She did social work with the Princess Elizabeth Home for many years, with the parents and children. She was involved in the Mothers’ Union of the Anglican Church, and other activities. She was well known in the church and in social work.”

Newsday asked about her impact on him, noting his role as a strong labour advocate.

“Both my parents instilled in me a strong sense of social justice and fairness, and to treat everybody fairly and decently, regardless of their station in life.”

Abdulah recalled that he had grown up in rural Jamaica while his father was a parish priest who served very humble people, many being peasant farmers.

He also recalled his mother’s memory of her and her relatives having all been rounded up during World War II and detained in a camp in the Rocky Mountains, because at the time, members the Japanese community were viewed with suspicion because the US and Canada were at war with Japan.

Abdulah said his father had been a student in the US at a time of profound racial discrimination against black people, in the 1940s.

“In our home, there was always a lot of debate and discussion with my parents’ friends, which may well have shaped me.”

Abdulah said funeral arrangements for his mother will be announced.

Duke resigns from THA post

A prolonged power struggle between Democratic Progressive Patriots (PDP) political leader Watson Duke and Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine took a shocking twist on Thursday.

Duke, the party’s leader, announced he has resigned as deputy Chief Secretary of the THA.

At a press conference at the party’s Barataria office on Thursday morning, Duke pledged not to fight Augustine.

“You want to be one boss, one chief, one leader – go ahead. I hope you can deliver on your mandate, because we will hold you accountable.”

His resignation came two days after Augustine challenged Duke to bring a motion of no confidence against him in the THA.

Contacted for a comment on Augustine’s challenge later that day, Duke told Newsday he had “no interest.”

But on Thursday he broke his silence, saying he would not be muted on matters that are important to Tobagonians.

The spat between the two men started after Augustine announced at a post-Executive media briefing last Thursday that Duke’s position in the THA would be under review.

Duke had publicly condemned his colleagues for allegedly leaving a group of Tobagonian performers stranded in New York.

In response to Augustine’s announcement, Duke warned of the repercussions of challenging him as PDP founder and political leader.

At the press conference on Thursday Duke further accused his THA colleagues of betraying Tobagonians and using the party to get hold of the THA.

He said, “We promised Tobagonians we would put them first because they were tired of politicians putting them last.

“I will not be a part of an executive run by a child and his friends that do not know how to serve. You want to be big, be big –but do not abuse public funds,” Duke warned Augustine.

“I will sit on the opposite side – but I will not sit with the PNM. It will be Watson Duke representing the people, and Farley and friends on the other side…

“When Watson Duke moves away, he carries the PDP with him. Wherever I am is the PDP. It is owned by me. There was no group when I started, under the streetlight.”
