“PNP river come down bank to bank,” was the word from the People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding as he greeted Comrades who turned out in their numbers on Sunday at the National Arena in Kingston for the party’s 84th annual conference

He also greeted those gathered outside, which he said numbered in the thousands.

Amid the high energy at the venue, the common message is “Time come”, something echoed by all those who talked on the platform on Sunday.

It is the first annual conference for the party since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and the first since Golding took over as president of the political party.

While police officers did their job outside the venue, Comrades stood in solidarity on the inside.

Here are some scenes from the PNP’s 84th annual conference now under way in Kingston.

PNP and JLP ‘are not the same’, says Dayton Campbell Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

General Secretary of the People’s National Party (PNP) Dr Dayton Campbell was on a mission when he approached the podium at the party’s 84th annual conference on Sunday, and he did not mince his words in dispelling what he termed “a lie from the pit of hell”.

Delivering his message in under five minutes, Campbell made it clear that the People’s National Party and the “other party” — the Jamaica Labour Party — are not the same

“They are trying to say that there is no difference between the PNP and that other party, and it is a lie from the pit of hell because we are not the same,” said Campbell to thunderous applause.

According to the PNP general secretary, the Opposition PNP and the governing JLP are not the same because they would not allow other governments “to tell us who our friends should be”.

“We determine who we are friends with based on their relationship with us, and so we welcome our visiting friends here today because the PNP is a regional and an international organisation,” Campbell claimed.

Taking a swipe at the Government for its loan offer to students studying in Ukraine to return home from the war-threatened country earlier this year, Campbell said:

We are not the same because the PNP does not offer loans to students when bombs are dropping and people are dying. The PNP send money to bring them home. We are not the same.

Campbell also argued that the PNP “put insurance in place to protect you from high oil prices”, pointing to a policy that has been adopted by St Vincent and the Grenadines, leading to that country reportedly having the “lowest gas price in the region”.

Minister of Finance in St Vincent and the Grenadines Camilio Gonsalves spoke to this on a platform at a PNP constituency conference last Sunday.

The PNP general secretary then turned his attention to the leadership of the JLP.

“We are not the same because we don’t have a leader who run round from constituency to open one deggeh, deggeh, deggeh house. We open housing schemes, we build communities; we are for the people,” he insisted, a point that was again met with applause.

“We are not the same because we do not have a leader who feel like he must come and wear clothes and call himself ‘brodevil’, or bro whatever,” claimed Campbell, who added that the PNP leader is one of “substance and character”.

“We are not the same. We are a progressive party, we are the People’s National Party,” the party’s general secretary said.

Hero CPL 2022: Barbados Royals beat GAW to qualify for Playoffs

Barbados Royals confirmed their spot in the playoffs of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign with a commanding DLS victory against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to field first and that appeared to be the right decision.

Taking wickets at regular intervals the Amazon Warriors made it difficult for the Royals to negotiate the conditions and only a late order rally from Jason Holder and Mujeeb Ur Rahman ensured the Royals ended with a reasonable total of 107/6 from an innings shortened to 16 overs due to rain

However, that total proved more than enough as the Royals bowling attack offered no freebies when the Amazon Warriors came to bat. Led by Mujeeb and Rahkeem Cornwall they ensured the run rate become untenable as the Royals cruised to victory.

Guyana Amazon Warriors’ cadre of spinners imposed themselves on the game taking all six wickets to fall in the Barbados Royals innings.

Having reduced the Royals to 62/5 when the rain delay came, Imran Tahir then removed David Miller immediately after the restart but Jason Holder and Mujeeb Ur Rahman compiled a 39-run partnership off 16 balls to give the Royals a total to defend.

111 to win suggested an advantage for the Amazon Warriors but Mujeeb and Rahkeem Cornwall produced spell-binding bowling in the first four overs to restrict the Warriors to 12 runs for the loss of one wicket.

The Amazon Warriors couldn’t get going as a disciplined Royals bowling performance increased the pressure with a plethora of dot balls.

In the end, what should have been a tight game became an easy win for the Royals as they coasted to victory by 29 runs.

Joseph twins return to play and giveback to The St Michael School Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

The St Michael School is “very proud” of their teen alumni Daniel and Darius Joseph, who recently showed that not only do they have big hearts for cricket but they remember where they came from.

Different in a sense from birth, being a twin, the brothers have once again separated themselves from the usual pack.

With many lamenting about the youth in Barbados, especially Bajan young men, these two boys are showing that they are built of strong character and possess great skill.

The two former student-athletes, who play cricket, left The St Michael School (SMS) during the pandemic in 2020 to spend an initial two academic terms in fourth form on a cricket scholarship at King’s Bruton in Somerset, England. During their stint, they performed “outstandingly”, and as a result, were invited to remain for fifth form.

Having completed their fifth year last term, Daniel is now the King’s Burton Player of the Year. And during this 2022 summer vacation, the twin also made their first team debut in the Lancashire League, where they had “a successful trial”.

The Joseph twins were back on the island recently and along with spending time with their friends and family, they took up the chance to rejoin the St Michael School cricket team to play for their alma mater. But that’s not the only way the twins gave back to their school, they also made a special donation to the SMS Cricket Team. They presented their token to Coach Dario Cummins.

Darius and Daniel are transferring to Scarborough College in Yorkshire, England, to begin their sixth form year.

Sharing the news on the Instagram page for the Martindale’s Road-located school, the page administrator wrote, “We’re very proud of these young men and wish them continued success in their future endeavours – both academic and sporting.”

Bidens among thousands paying respects to Queen Elizabeth II Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

US President Joe Biden paid his respects at Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin on Sunday as thousands of police, hundreds of British troops and an army of officials made final preparations for the queen’s state funeral — a spectacular display of national mourning that will also be the biggest gathering of world leaders for years.

Biden and first lady Jill Biden were among thousands of mourners — from locals and tourists to royals and world leaders — to pay their respects at Westminster Hall, where the queen is lying in state. The president made the sign of the cross and put his hand to his heart as he stood quietly near the casket in the ornate 900-year-old hall with his wife and U.S. Ambassador Jane Hartley.

Biden then signed the official condolence book and attended a reception Sunday at Buckingham Palace hosted by King Charles III. He is one of 500 world leaders and royals invited to the queen’s state funeral Monday at Westminster Abbey, along with hundreds of British charity workers.

Biden called Queen Elizabeth II “decent” and “honourable” and “all about service” as he signed the condolence book, saying his heart went out to the royal family.

“Queen Elizabeth lived her life for the people,” Jill Biden wrote in a book for spouses and ambassadors. “She served with wisdom and grace. We will never forget her warmth, kindness and the conversations we shared.”

As the dignitaries poured in, the clock was ticking down for those seeking a place in the longest queue many have ever seen to file past the queen’s coffin. The miles-long queue is expected to be closed to new arrivals later Sunday so that everyone now in the line can view the coffin before Monday morning, when it will be taken to Westminster Abbey for the queen’s funeral.

Family by family, thousands of people kept joining the line around the clock, braving chilly overnight temperatures and waits of up to 17 hours in a queue that stretched for over 5 miles (8 kilometers).

Lauren Wilson, a 36-year-old student, was in the much shorter queue for people with mobility issues. She said she wanted to experience in person the coffin lying in state.

“The world is in such a weird place and then this happened. It feels more momentous,” she said.

She worried that the pageantry surrounding Elizabeth’s death deprives the queen’s relatives of the ability to come to terms with their loss.

“The family are not allowed to grieve. I find it quite heartbreaking,” she said.

The queen’s eight grandchildren, led by heir to the throne Prince William, circled the coffin and stood with their heads bowed during a silent vigil on Saturday evening.

Among the foreign leaders in London was New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who told the BBC she was humbled to represent her nation at the funeral and to witness the national outpouring of grief and respect for the late queen.

“The thing that I will take away from this period is just the beauty of the public’s response, the kindness that you see from members of the public, the patience, the camaraderie. That has been, for me, the most moving tribute of all, has been the public response of the British people,” she said.

People across the UK will also pause Sunday evening for a nationwide minute of silence to remember the queen, who died September 8 at 96 after 70 years on the throne. Monday has been declared a public holiday, and the funeral will be broadcast to a huge television audience worldwide and screened to crowds in parks and public spaces across the country.

Police officers from around the country will be on duty as part of the biggest one-day policing operation in London’s history.

Crowds also gathered Sunday near Windsor Castle, where the queen will be laid to rest at a private family ceremony on Monday evening.

Steve Beeson came with his family of three and a bouquet of flowers he had purchased for the queen.

“She has been a constant steadying of the reins for the country through all of these really rough times, the least we can do is come and say ‘Thank you,’” he said.

Camilla, the queen consort, paid tribute to her mother-in-law in a video message, saying the monarch “carved her own role” as a “solitary woman” on a world stage dominated by men.

“I will always remember her smile. That smile is unforgettable,” said Camilla, who is married to Charles.

Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, was also among mourners paying respects to the queen’s coffin. British royal officials said Zelenska met with Catherine, the Princess of Wales, at Buckingham Palace on Sunday afternoon. They did not release further details. The British government has been among the strongest supporters of Ukraine since it was invaded by Russia in February.

On Saturday night, it was the grandchildren’s time to mourn. William and Prince Harry, Charles’ sons, were joined by Princess Anne’s children, Zara Tindall and Peter Philips; Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie; and Prince Edward’s two children — Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

William stood with his head bowed at the head of the coffin and Harry at the foot. Both princes, who are military veterans, were in uniform. The crowd kept slowly, silently filing past.

“You could see that they were thinking hard about their grandmother, the queen,” said Ian Mockett, a civil engineer from Oxford in southern England. “It was good to see them all together as a set of grandchildren, given the things that have happened over the last few years.”

The lying-in-state continues until early Monday morning, when the queen’s coffin will be moved on a gun carriage pulled by 142 Royal Navy sailors to nearby Westminster Abbey for the funeral, the finale of 10 days of national mourning for Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

After the service Monday at the abbey, the late queen’s coffin will be transported through the historic heart of London on the state gun carriage. It will then be taken in a hearse to Windsor, where the queen will be interred alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, who died last year at 99.

Sumita Tanda put down bright red roses as a huge floral tribute bloomed near Windsor Castle.

“I feel so privileged to be a local resident of Windsor,” she said. “I just wanted to pay my respects.”
