Two minutes of silence will be observed across the United Kingdom at the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday giving the public across the nation a chance to pay their respects to the late monarch.

Buckingham Palace released details Thursday of the state funeral and a ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor ahead of her private interment later Monday.

After the state funeral, attended by some 2,000 guests, including visiting heads of state and other dignitaries, the late queen’s coffin will be transported through the historic heart of London on a horse-drawn gun carriage before being driven by the state hearse to Windsor, where the queen will be interred alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, who died last year.

Roger Federer says he is retiring from pro tennis at age 41 Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Roger Federer is retiring from professional tennis at age 41 after a series of knee operations, closing a career in which he won 20 Grand Slam titles, finished five seasons ranked No. 1 and helped create a golden era of men’s tennis with rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Federer posted what he called a “bittersweet decision” via social media on Thursday, less than a week after 23-time major champion Serena Williams played what is expected to the last match of her career.

Combined, the exits by two of the greatest athletes in their sport’s history represent a significant turning of the page.

“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form,” Federer wrote on Twitter. “But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.”

Federer has not competed since Wimbledon in July 2021, and so, in that sense, his news is not all that surprising.

But he had appeared at an event marking the 100-year anniversary of Centre Court at the All England Club this July and said he hoped to come back to play there “one more time.”

He also had said he would return to tournament action in his home country at the Swiss Indoors in October.

In Thursday’s announcement, Federer said his farewell event will be the Laver Cup in London next week. That is a team event run by his management company.

Federer is married and he and his wife, Mirka — a tennis player, too; they met as athletes at an Olympics — have two sets of twins.

He leaves with a total of 103 tour-level titles on his substantial resume and 1,251 wins in singles matches, both second only to Jimmy Connors in the Open era, which began in 1968. Federer’s records include being the oldest No. 1 in ATP rankings history — he returned to the top spot at 36 in 2018 — and most consecutive weeks there (his total weeks mark was eclipsed by Djokovic).

When Federer won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003, the men’s record for most was held by Pete Sampras, who had won his 14th at the U.S. Open the year before in what turned out to be the last match of the American’s career.

Federer would go on to blow way past that, ending up with 20 by winning eight championships at Wimbledon, six at the Australian Open, five at the U.S. Open and one at the French Open. His 2009 trophy at Roland Garros allowed Federer to complete a career Grand Slam.

His serving, forehand, footwork and attacking style will all be remembered. Also unforgettable were his matches against younger rivals Nadal, 36, and Djokovic, 35, who both equalled, then surpassed, Federer’s Slam total and are still winning titles at the sport’s four biggest tournaments.

Nadal now leads the count with 22, one ahead of Djokovic.

“I was lucky enough to play so many epic matches that I will never forget,” Federer said in Thursday’s announcement.

Addressing his “competitors on the court” — although not by name — he wrote: “We pushed each other, and together we took tennis to new levels.”

Federer’s last match anywhere came on July 7, 2021, when he lost at Centre Court in the Wimbledon quarterfinals to Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Soon after, Federer had surgery to repair damage to his meniscus and cartilage in his right knee — his third operation on that knee in a span of 1 1/2 years.

“Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt,” Federer said Thursday, “and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.”

Cabinet denies companies’ requests to exclude Caymanian participation Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

The Cabinet Office reported that the Cabinet recently rejected applications by two companies seeking exemption from the general requirement to have Caymanian participation.

General rule

For those who are unfamiliar with the general rule, the Local Companies (Control) Act requires a local company carrying on business in Cayman to comply with a number of rules, including the following:

the company must be Caymanian controlledat least sixty per cent of its shares must be beneficially owned by Caymaniansat least sixty per cent of its directors must be Caymanians

However, the general rule can be bypassed if a person makes a special application under the Local Companies (Control) Act (in fact many companies have made successful applications over the years, especially in the case of self-employed real estate agents and property developers).

Application

To complete the application to avoid Caymanian participation, the relevant company simply has to submit a processing fee of two hundred dollars, a licence fee of two thousand five hundred dollars, copies of corporate documents and a statement setting out the nature of the business the company is carrying on and proposes to carry on.

Grant of licence

Before granting the 12 year licence to the relevant company to conduct business without seeking Caymanian participation, a number of things must be considered. These include:

Cayman’s economic situation Due protection of persons already engaged in business in Caymanthe number of additional people from outside Cayman who would be required to reside in Cayman if the application is grantedthe efforts made by the company to obtain Caymanian participation

Cabinet refusals

In the case of the two companies which had applications before the Cabinet, it is understood from the Cabinet meeting summary that each company applied for an exemption from the requirement to show “efforts made by the company to obtain Caymanian participation.”

Although the deliberations surrounding the exemption application are not disclosed in the Cabinet meeting summary, the outcome is that the exemptions were ultimately refused. This may mean that the companies may now have to demonstrate “efforts” to obtain Caymanian participation, which typically includes advertisement of the relevant job and interviewing local candidates.

Capybara captured in Port of Spain, released in bird sanctuary

Black Immigrant Daily News

Tobago

WILD RIDE: The capybara in the trunk of its rescuer Ricardo Meade’s car shortly before it was released in the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary on Wednesday.

A DISORIENTED capybara was rescued from certain death in downtown Port of Spain on Wednesday morning and later released, thanks to the heroics of environmentalist Ricardo Meade.

Meade, director of the El Socorro Centre for Wildlife Conservation, was in the city at the time and was called by police to handle the situation.

He met the visibly frightened animal opposite First Citizens Bank on the Brian Lara Promenade. The capybara took off and eluded Meade and several bystanders for about ten minutes but they eventually caught it after it ran into a glass window at RBC, which left it dazed.

It was tied down, placed in the trunk of Meade’s car, and after approval, taken to the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary where it was released.

“We decided to ease the animal’s stress by releasing it because they do hyperventilate,” Meads said.

“It’s a very hot day. The animal was drenched in sweat and it was clearly very uncomfortable.”

Meade was told the animal was struck by a vehicle but, apart from sustaining some bumps and scratches, did not appear to have any broken bones or life-threatening injuries. It would likely have been fatally struck if left free to roam for much longer, he said.

Although the capybara’s body shape resembles that of a wild pig, it is part of the rodent family. In fact, it is the largest rodent in the world and is of the genus hydrochoerus.

It is native to South America but has been spotted in Trinidad in increasing frequency.

“With coastal developments and man manipulating the coastal areas, the animals are being forced into other areas,” Meade explained. There are several ways the capybara could have found itself downtown.

“It could have escaped from someone who was transporting it. People capture them and other exotic animals and they sometimes escape from the back of trucks, and so on. It could have jumped out on Wrightson Road, on the promenade, anywhere around there.”

Alternatively, he added, “It could have escaped from someone who lives in the area or an institution. Or it could literally have come down from by the Beetham Gardens, by the water sewerage treatment plant – they are known to be around there. So they could have skipped Sea Lots and reached to Port of Spain.”

There were videos circulating online showing capybara walking in groups at night in what appears to be the Beetham Gardens or its immediate vicinity.

Woman Held In South Korea After The Bodies Of Her Two Children Were Found In Suitcases – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

“To have someone in custody overseas within such a short period of time has all been down to the assistance of the Korean authorities and the coordination by our NZ Police Interpol staff,” said New Zealand Police Detective Inspector Tofilau Fa’amanuia Vaaelua on Thursday.

Police have requested the suspect be denied bail prior to her extradition to New Zealand where she faces murder charges.

Local media there reported the family had lived in Auckland for a few years and the children’s father had died of cancer prior to their deaths. They reported the children’s grandparents still live in New Zealand.

The children’s bodies were discovered in early August after a separate family bought a trailer-load of goods, including the suitcases, in an online auction.

That family had no connection to the deaths and had suffered great distress in the period following the discovery, officers said.

Massy Stores Issues Statement On Voice Note Regarding Food Disposal At Landfill – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

We are aware of a voice note in circulation regarding food sent for landfill disposal by ourcompany, Massy Stores (SLU).

The voice note suggests that meat, beef, milk, chicken, cheese sent for dumping was supposedly raided from the landfill, reentered the market and is being sold.

We wish to indicate that based on our logs of the most recent items sent to the DeglosLandfill on September 1st, 2022, the items submitted for destruction and disposal were poor quality, compromised perishable items, mainly fruit and vegetables and cheese.

This has been confirmed by the Solid Waste Management Authority, who manages the site and facilitates the disposal of products received.

Food waste prevention at source is a key priority for Massy Stores SLU. Through variousoperational strategies (purchasing, inventory tracking) and other means, every effort is made to reduce food waste within our operations.

Further we have in place a food redistribution programme where surplus and food with good “use by dates” are donated to a range of food related charitable and other organizations, while it is still safe for consumption.

While we are committed to strengthening our processes where food waste is concerned, wewish to reiterate that the items sent to the landfill for disposal were not fit for humanconsumption.

As such the decision to dispose of the products was in keeping with proper health, safety and sanitation practice, given the potential health risks.

We will continue to work closely with our waste disposal service providers and the St. LuciaSolid Waste Management Authority to improve our processes as it relates to the safe andtimely disposal of all products (food inclusive) sent by Massy Stores SLU to the landfill fordisposal.
