Parlamentario Arthur Dowers

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Parlamentario pa fraccion di AVP, Arthur Dowers, a mustra cu studiantenan di Aruba, ta sinti nan mes perdi na Hulanda pa falta di atencion adecuado di principalmente Minister Plenipotenciario Wilfrede Besaril y di Gabinete Wever Croes I y II pa atende cu nan interesnan.

“Despues di tanto aña di trabao, inversion y desaroyo tecnologico awe nos mester yega na e tristo conclusion cu awe nos studiantenan ta hopi mas mal informa y mal prepara pa nan estudio na Hulanda.

E Ombudsman Hulandes a haci un  investigacion bao studiantenan di e islanan di Caribe Hulandes caminda entre otro el a  yega na cierto conclusionnan manera cu ta berdad cu bida na Hulanda ta bira mas complica y tin biaha hasta hopi menos cordial.

Automatisacion hopi biaha ta kita e contacto humano directo cu e pueblo Hulandes,  pues no ta solamente e studiante ta keha pero hopi ta esunnan di edad halto tambe cu tin problema cu e cambionan den sociedad.

Berguensa cu awe ta bisa e studiante Arubiano pa no bay Hulanda mes pasobra Besaril a drumi y fiesta na luga di traha pa pueblo y principalmente studiantenan di Aruba.

Den tempo cu mi persona a asumi responsabilidad pa huur cantidad di camber pa studiantenan Arubiano ta sigura di un luga, pa  ora nan yega Hulanda nan no cay den bashi.

Antigua to Follow Up on Bilateral Commitments to Support St Kitts in Its Accreditation Bid for Climate Finance and Its Move to Address Plastic Pollution

Black Immigrant Daily News

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, 24 September 2022 – St Kitts-Nevis is moving closer towards addressing climate-related challenges, as Antigua and Barbuda has made commitments to support the federation in its accreditation bid for Green Climate Funding (GCF) and by extension, its move to address plastic pollution.

During the 77th UN General Assembly, Hon Dr Joyelle Clarke met with the co-chairperson of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Molywn Joseph who is also Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Environment, Health and Wellness. During this meeting, St Kitts-Nevis’ participation in the roundtable discussion, cements its intentions to address the introduction of “single-use plastic” through legislative support and secondly, to address plastic pollution, in general.

She said, “Following the session, Minister Molwyn and I had a small debriefing and agreed on further bilateral meetings between Antigua and Barbuda and St Kitts and Nevis, so that we can move forward together to accreditation to the Green Climate Fund as well as the Adaptation Fund, and addressing plastic pollution.”

The Minister of Energy and Climate Action continues her work leading up to her participation in high-level sessions on renewable energy.

Minister Clarke Looks forward to unified regional approach at COP27

Meanwhile, Dr Clarke praised the expanded St Kitts-Nevis delegation for UNGA 77 and said it was indeed a success and sets the stage for participation at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP27.

She said, “The Foreign Minister was able to attend a number of sessions, not only related to Foreign Affairs but also to the CARICOM’s position as it relates to COP27 as well as having Loss and Damage on the agenda. Fortunately, a number of investors have reached out indicating their willingness to support St Kitts and Nevis in its bid for renewable energy and reduction in fossil fuel consumption.”

In relation to regional interests, Dr Clarke said countries with new administrations such as Grenada and St Kitts-Nevis, have recognized the importance to lend their collective voices in the Caribbean, which says we need to solidify our agenda heading into COP27 and this may need participation in a series of high-level conversations.

COP27 will be held from November 6-18.

Minister of Environment Sits in UN Sessions Designed to Help St Kitts-Nevis Move Towards Solutions for Tackling Pollution and Single-use Plastics

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, 24 September, 2022 – The Government of St Kitts and Nevis is working to find solutions for the rising challenge of plastic pollution.

Currently attending the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Minister of Environment and Climate Action, Hon Dr Joyelle Clarke participated in high-level discussions on policy solutions to tackle plastic pollution, using a national to global approach.

Dr Clarke said addressing plastic solutions, and in particular, micro plastic, does not require just political-will but strong legislation supporting restricting of the importation of single-use or disposable plastics, but also requires financial assistance being established with support to transition from plastics to renewable material which is often an issue of waste management.

She said, “We will have to address plastic pollution including plastic that is coming in and plastic that is already in the environment. There is also a need for a culture shift where persons engage more in sorting and recycling of their garbage and limiting their dependence on plastic so that we can move forward towards the global trend of banning plastic to stay true to our Prime Minister’s bid to become a sustainable island state.”

The general tone of the session focused on ways to find solutions to totally ban the production of single-use or disposable plastics. Such things as water bottles, straws and plastic bags that are used only once before they are discarded or recycled. The Ministers agreed that the amount of resources required to manufacture these products for exporting and importing, does not make it worthwhile, especially to the environment.

Tobago Chamber head ‘neutral’ on sea, airbridge fare increases

Black Immigrant Daily News

TOBAGO Chamber of Industry and Commerce president Diane Hadad has described as “neutral” her feeling about the government’s decision to increase fares on the sea and airbridge, effective January 1, 2023.Delivering the 2022-2023 fiscal package in the Parliament on Monday, Finance Minister Colm Imbert announced a $50 increase in airfare (one way) for passengers travelling between Trinidad and Tobago. The fare is currently $150. Standard fares on the sea bridge also have been increased from $50 to $75 (one way) while those in premium class have moved from $100 to $150. People above age 60 who currently travel for free on the ferries will now have to pay $25.

Hadad said she has always felt  the $50 fare on the seabridge was too low.

“And I agree with the 60-and-over people now having to pay.

“But I don’t know why they are still paying only $25. That should have never been done. They need to be paying the fare. I don’t understand what is that concession about. I never did,” she told Newsday.

Noting that airfare has gone from $150 to $200, Hadad wondered if the increase will result in greater efficiency.

“I would like to know what we would be getting differently for that. Is it that we are going to have constant on-time flights? Is it that the airline is going to be operating at full and more capacity so that the island can benefit from it? Or is it just a punitive measure because nothing has changed from the Tobago side?”

Hadad said if the increase in airfare is being regarded as a measure to ensure greater efficiency and consistency, then it is likely that many people may choose to vacation in Tobago as opposed to travelling overseas.

But she said the decision to increase the fares, particularly on the seabridge, could bring hardship for Tobagonians who do business in Trinidad fairly regularly.

“There is still the element of the Tobagonian feeling the brunt of that having to come for goods and services on the island of Trinidad. That, to me, clearly would be for the people on the island to decide how much of that are they going to tolerate in terms of what is our administration going to say about that.”

Hadad said the budget was a rehash of things she had grown accustomed to hearing.

“He (Imbert) said so much to say so little. The budget is the same: cut-and-paste, report and repeat.”

For example, she noted $300 million has again been allocated for development initiatives, $18 million for URP and $9.2 million for CEPEP.

“So the more things change, the more that remain the same.”

Hadad also observed that Imbert accused the Opposition of hindering the passage of the ‘autonomy’ bills.

“There was blame on the Opposition for the bill not passing to give Tobago more autonomy. That is just an excuse. But the bill was not in its right form to allow for any proper management.”

Foreign Minister Dr. Douglas, in his remarks, thanked the Government of India on behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their contribution of Pfizer vaccines that aided substantially in the Federation’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. He also mentioned several technical cooperation and capacity-building projects India has pursued with the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis including training opportunities in a variety of disciplines. CARICOM and India have enjoyed an excellent relationship, with India providing substantive technical and financial support to solar energy and climate change-related projects, as well as capacity-building courses and training opportunities.

In another regional meeting, regional diplomacy was championed through the Alliance of Small States (AOSIS).  The President Designate of the UN Climate Change Conference’s 27th Session (COP27)- His Excellency Minister Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt convened a meeting with the Foreign Ministers of AOSIS on September 23rd. In this engagement, HE President Designate of Egypt gave a brief overview of the preparatory processes concluded thus far and highlighted that the Egyptian government has branded COP27 as an “African COP”. Featuring prominently in the discussion was the issue of loss and damage as an important element of climate change negotiations in the lead up to COP27 in Egypt.

Foreign Minister Dr. Douglas in his intervention reiterated the remarks by his CARICOM colleagues and expressed the important role of advocacy in achieving tangible solutions, especially for Caribbean countries in the Atlantic belt experiencing devastating climatic conditions. The Caribbean Foreign Ministers discussed the vibrant diplomatic relations with the United States, including cooperation on the COVID-19 pandemic and the donation of vaccines to several Caribbean states, the development assistance vis-à-vis the Caribbean Development Bank and enhancing cooperation on food security. The situation in Haiti was a primary point of exchange as the Caribbean,  the USA’s close neighbour, has maintained solidarity with the Government and People of Haiti in order to bring a Haitian-led resolve to the internal conflict. Foreign Minister Dr. Douglas thanked the Under Secretary General for convening such an important meeting and pledged his support to the bilateral and regional cooperation with one of the Caribbean’s most important partners.
