The Trelawny police are now searching for the driver of a black Toyota motorcar that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian along the Wiltshire main road in the parish.

The deceased has been identified as Leroy Samuels of Wiltshire, Trelawny.

Reports are that at about 3:30 am on Thursday, the pedestrian was hit along the roadway by a motor vehicle which reportedly initially stopped but sped off.

This followed a motor vehicle collision along the same corridor on Sunday, August 7, which left a man and a woman dead

The deceased, in that incident, were identified as 31-year-old Cherylee Payne, a hairdresser of Lilliput, and 24-year-old Maurice Thomas of Rose Heights, both in St. James.

Reports from the Falmouth police were that at about 3:00 am, a Mazda Demio motorcar was traveling to Montego Bay, when on reaching a section of the Wiltshire main road, the motorcar collided in a Hino motor truck, which was parked on the left of the roadway.

Edward Howard, managing director of the National Roads Authority

Edward Howard, the managing director at the National Roads Authority (NRA), confirmed on Friday evening that the traffic signal on Bobby Thompson Way was functioning again after been knocked out by a CUC line during the storm.

According to Mr Howard, the repairs were done using “mainly salvaged parts” from other equipment and that the NRA is “sourcing new components” overseas. The new system is expected to “house a backup battery system” which will help in the event that the traffic signal is impacted again during a storm.

Road users are being reminded, however, that the current repairs are only temporary and if any issues occur with the substituted components, the NRA and the police may have to revert to a temporary layout as a four-way stop, with assistance from the police during peak hours.

The NRA thanks the public for their patience at this time and apologizes again for any inconvenience caused by the event.

Govt to meet with CGX on Berbice Deep-Water Port

Black Immigrant Daily News

The Guyana Government is slated to meet with representatives from the Canadian company, CGX Energy Inc, next week to intensify discussions on the deep-water port facility that is being constructed in Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

This is according to Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat, when contacted for an update on CGX’s Berbice Deep-Water Port (BDWP) project.

Previously, the Government had expressed concerns over the slow pace of the project and had given the company up to September month-end to submit a plan on how it intends to move forward with the port facility.

Minister Bharrat disclosed to Guyana Times that he will be meeting with the company representatives early next week to have “general discussions” on the project. The CGX deep-water harbour project has been in the works since 2010.

CGX’s subsidiary, Grand Canal Industrial Estates Inc (GCIE), has been engaged in civil works related to the construction of the US$130 million Berbice Deep-Water Port, which intends to serve as an offshore supply base for the oil and gas industry, and as a multi-purpose terminal cargo handling base to service agricultural import/export, containerised and specialised cargo.

Initially, it was expected that the offshore oil and gas support shore base would be operationalised by the third quarter of 2022, and the cargo terminal by the end of 2023.However, in its financial statements in August, CGX informed shareholders that it would be unable to meet the 2022 deadline and that a revised schedule for completion is being discussed with the contractor.

“As a result of certain delays, the Company believes it is unlikely that the offshore supply base of the port will be fully operational in Q4, 2022 as previously envisioned. A revised schedule for completion of the offshore supply base of the port is being discussed with the contractor and the Company anticipates providing an updated timeline to shareholders and stakeholders in due course,” CGX said in its Second Quarter Financial Statement released on August 9.

Given its slow-paced operation, the Guyana Government had CGX relinquish two oil exploration blocks offshore – Demerara and Berbice – to the State, so that the company can focus on operations in the Corentyne Block as well as the deep-water port facility.

President Dr Irfaan Ali has already indicated that Guyana has gotten serious interest from Abu Dhabi Ports, a United Arab Emirates-based company that deals in industrial zones and logistics, in establishing a deep-water facility in Berbice.

In fact, a technical team from the company visited in September 2021 and compiled technical information on the project.

While in Dubai last October, the Guyanese Head of State also met with officials from Abu Dhabi Ports known as Khalifa Port during which they had extensive and in-depth discussions on the possibility of developing a deep-water harbour link to Brazil.

“The interest is great in this project… And they are looking at a modern state-of-the-art port facility operated with cutting-edge technology, focusing on efficiency, safety and security… Their initial assessment is one of great optimism. That’s how they described it. They believe that this a project that can happen; that is a project that is viable. They are now working on the nitty-gritty, the finer details in terms of this project,” the President told reporters at the subsequent press conference.

Meanwhile, during President Ali’s meeting in Dubai with officials from Abu Dhabi Ports, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, who is also the owner, operator, developer, and regulator of Abu Dhabi’s maritime infrastructure and Khalifa Industrial Zone (KIZAD), had said they are very serious about investing in Guyana.

“We are serious about Guyana, and I promise you we passed the time of thinking, now we are in the implementation stage. So, what you will see today is the capability of Abu Dhabi Ports,” Al Shamisi said to the Guyanese leader following a tour of Abu Dhabi Ports’ ultra-modern temperature-controlled vaccine storage warehouse facility.

President Ali had emphasised to the group that his Government is willing to facilitate the project by creating incentives and by ensuring that investments made are feasible for all parties involved.

“We are ready to work with you on having that deep-water port ready for not only Guyana but for the region. And for the most important strategic positioning for the UAE in South America, the Caribbean—in Latin America. I think we could just think about it as an upscaled Panama [Canal] development,” the Head of State told the officials.

Moreover, the President had indicated at the time had Guyana wanted to build a strong partnership with Abu Dhabi Ports to create a new logistics hub for the UAE that will connect business opportunities in South America, Central America, the Caribbean, North America, and West Africa.

In addition to Abu Dhabi Ports, President Ali told the Stabroek News in August that there is also interest from other investors in the deep-water port in Berbice. These include Saudi Arabia, Qatar and a local consortium of port operators as well.

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Leandro Trossard completed his hat trick with an 83rd-minute equalizer to earn Brighton a 3-3 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, marking an entertaining start to Roberto De Zerbi’s time in charge of the team from England’s south coast.

De Zerbi certainly put his stamp on Brighton after his arrival as Graham Potter’s replacement, setting the team up in a bold 3-2-4-1 formation at times at Anfield and taking risks in possession against one of the world’s best pressing sides.

It yielded some early benefits — Trossard scored well-worked goals off left-footed shots in the fourth and 17th minutes — before Liverpool got to grips with Brighton’s playing style and mounted a fightback.

Roberto Firmino scored either side of halftime and Liverpool went ahead off a hint of fortune, when Robert Sanchez miscued his punch from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner and saw the ball rebound off his own defender, Adam Webster, and into the net in the 63rd.

However, Brighton claimed a point — perhaps the least the team deserved from their adventurous play — when substitute Kaoru Mitoma crossed from the left, Virgil van Dijk missed a clearance and Trossard steered home a finish that goalkeeper Alisson Becker could only palm onto the crossbar and into the net.

Liverpool have won just two of their first seven matches in the league.

Gallagher marks return to Palace with winner for Chelsea Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

LONDON (AP) — Conor Gallagher marked his return to Selhurst Park with a last-minute winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Saturday.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Palace, came off the bench and curled home a shot from the edge of the area in the 90th minute to hand Graham Potter victory in his first league match in charge of Chelsea.

Odsonne Edouard opened the scoring for Palace after seven minutes and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized with a neat finish late in the first half.

Chelsea entered the contest having won all of their last 10 meetings between the clubs, while Palace were playing their first match in nearly a month after fixtures against Manchester United and Brighton were postponed following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

Patrick Vieira made three changes from the starting XI that drew with Newcastle in early September and one of those decisions quickly paid off.

Edouard, who replaced Jean-Philippe Mateta as Vieira’s central striker, met Jordan Ayew’s seventh-minute cross and lifted the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the top right corner.

Chelsea had a good chance to level at the 20-minute mark when Mason Mount headed inches wide of the right post.

It was the start of a sustained period of pressure from the visitors, who once again missed by inches after Raheem Sterling pounced on his own rebound but watched his second effort ping off a post.

And at the other end, Eberechi Eze could not find the finishing touch on an attempt to double Palace’s advantage, firing the ball just wide.

Palace were furious when Jordan Ayew looked through on goal only to be stopped by a handball by an outstretched Thiago Silva on the ground, but the defender was given only a yellow card.

Silva’s presence on the pitch proved vital moments later when Reece James found him at the edge of the area and he nodded the pass in the direction of Aubameyang, who spun and fired past a diving Vicente Guaita.

And it was more bad news for the hosts when Nathaniel Clyne and Silva both rose to meet the ball to the left of Palace’s goal and the former landed awkwardly. He stayed down until he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and replaced by James Tomkins, himself only recently returned from injury and available to Vieira for the first time this season.

Gallagher was warmly received when he stepped on the field at Selhurst Park in the 76th minute for the first time since his loan spell, but any friendly sentiment was quickly forgotten when he curled in the winner.

Newcastle won 4-1 at 10-man Fulham, Everton rallied to beat Southampton 2-1 away, while Bournemouth and Brentford drew 0-0.

Lewis promises Rural West that Magistrates Court will be relocated from Knuckleblock complex under his stewardship

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Senator Richard Lewis – the United Progressive Party (UPP) Candidate for St. John’s Rural West – vows that, under his stewardship, constituents will enjoy the use of the Knuckleblock Community Centre, since he will ensure the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court is relocated.

In yet another promise, the Cabinet has announced that the Court should be out of the complex by December of this year.

The UPP Candidate says he has no confidence in the December date, since the roof at the Court’s previous location has to be replaced and no work has begun, as yet.

Lewis notes that other communities have use of facilities that were built for them, but the people of St. John’s Rural West have been treated with disdain.

Lewis, the Senate Minority Leader, has been advocating for the Court’s removal for some time. In several forums, he has objected to the facility having been placed in the complex, noting that it was a donation to the community from the Government and People of China, which was skillfully negotiated by former Prime Minister Dr. Baldwin Spencer.

A source says that Lewis’ Antigua Labour Party opponent is concerned about her chances of a win if the Court is not relocated and the people of the community are not given access.

Meanwhile, a private contractor is undertaking repair work inside the Court’s High Street building. However, there is no indication that the renovation work includes the replacement of the leaking roof.

But according to a source, Court officials have resolved that if the roof is not removed and replaced, then the move will not take place.
