Social Stock Exchange donate funds to Education Ministry and 2NGOS Loop Jamaica

The Jamaica Social Stock Exchange (JSSE) recently presented cheques totaling $384,668.95 to the Ministry of Education and Youth and two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in support of their ongoing initiatives.

The sum, accumulated from donations via the JSSE’s platform, represents additional funding for interventions by entities that target vulnerable persons.

A cheque in the sum of $254,168.95 was presented to Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams, towards the ‘One Tablet or One Laptop Per Child’ initiative, which aims to bridge the digital divide within the education sector, by providing at least 100,000 needy students with the requisite tools to facilitate information and communications technology (ICT)-based learning.

More than $2.3 million has, so far, been raised by the JSSE in collaboration with the Ministry and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) towards the initiative. In addition, Mustard Seed Communities Jamaica received $80,500 to aid in providing personal hygiene items for the adults and children housed at their apostolates.

JSSE Manager, Nora Blake, indicated that consequent on funding challenges that Mustard Seed experienced, the entity went to market seeking public support, through donations.

The JSSE was able to initially raise almost $2 million. “Massy Distributors was our major partner in that effort, contributing $1.5 million in kind,” she pointed out.

This earned the company special acknowledgement as Top Donor at the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) 17th regional investments and capital markets conference in January, during which Massy cross-listed on the stock exchange. Meanwhile, the St Ann-based Teen Challenge Jamaica received $50,000 to bolster the organisation’s needs, which are focused on addressing addiction issues among young people.

The entity has a small farm with a poultry operation and vegetable cultivation, from which produce is sold to the local hotel industry. This was bolstered by the JSSE’s initial handover of funds during the onslaught of COVID-19.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it had curtailed activities in tourism. The social-sector organisation was then faced with a serious cash flow problem with the possibility of having to close the venture, which would have affected the project’s mission,” Ms. Blake outlined. She advised that the JSSE went to the market and was able to raise an initial $1.5 million for the organisation.

The JSSE has raised just under $50 million for charities and special assistance appeals since its establishment in 2019. A subsidiary of the JSE, it was created to mobilise resources into the social sector as well as facilitate stakeholder capacity-building and the supporting ecosystem’s overall developmen

Island Primary, a new option for students in September 2023 Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

Cayman’s newest 17-classroom school, Island Primary, said they are opening their doors to students from the Reception year up to Year 6 for the 2023/2024 school year, which begins in September 2023.

Regarding their approach to learning, Island Primary said on their website that the school “will provide a dynamic learning community” and will offer “students and families with exceptional educational opportunities in the Cayman Islands that reflect the true essence of our culture and the spirit of our local community.”

This learning is expected to be enhanced by state-of-the-art technology included in the classrooms, which will taught “in a relaxed setting conducive to learning,” located on 4.3 acres of lush landscapes in Buttonwood Way, George Town, just off Linford Pierson Highway.

As cost is an important factor for most parents, Island Primary says that they are “working to provide partial scholarships to families who need a little help to cover the costs of tuition for their child,” covering “up to 30% of their annual tuition costs.” Sibling discounts may also apply, where the school is offering the following discounts for families at Island Primary:

Full tuition for the first child based upon the child in the highest-class level A 5% reduction for the second child A 10% reduction for the third and subsequent children

These gestures may go a long way for some parents as the take home pay for many in Cayman is in the region of $3,000 per month or less, while the monthly tuition to attend the school will be $1,570 for the 2023/24 school year.

Island Primary also noted that if they “are unable to offer a place in your chosen entry year, your application will automatically roll over to the next available placement, and you will not be required to re-apply.” However, any registration fee paid will be non-refundable.

For those that are accepted for their chosen entry year, they will complete “a British curriculum tailored for our local community of eager, curious learners.”

Speaking about the school’s progression to this stage, Principal Steve Coles said: “I am so proud of our journey to this point, a journey founded on hard work, collaboration, trust and a unified sense of purpose in seeking to provide a dynamic learning community committed to actively engaging with and contributing to an ever-changing and diverse local and global society.”

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault, the Crown Prosecution Service said on Saturday.

Greenwood, aged 21, is due to appear in court on Monday facing three counts relating to the same woman.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood, said Janet Potter, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West.

“Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police,” Potter said.

Greenwood was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online. He has been out on bail since. He has been suspended by United and not played for the club since January.

“Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service,” United said in a statement. “He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”

Wolves move out of EPL drop zone and leave Forest bottom Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Wolverhampton Wanderers moved out of the English Premier League (EPL) relegation zone and left Nottingham Forest there after a Ruben Neves penalty separated the two strugglers by 1-0 on Saturday.

Neves converted from the spot after 56 minutes at Molineux to secure the manager-less home team only its second league win.

Forest missed an opportunity to share the points when Brennan Johnson’s 79th-minute penalty was saved by Jose Sa.

Remarkably, Sa has been playing with a broken wrist since the second game of the season and shrugged off the injury to produce the pivotal moment.

“Jose Sa is a fantastic goalkeeper, he showed it last season, he’s showing it again, importantly he saved a really important penalty for us,” Neves said.

Interim managers Steve Davis and James Collins are in charge of Wolves until a successor is found for Bruno Lage, who was fired this month.

The pair has lifted the mood around the club after securing a crucial win against a rival that is also fighting for survival.

Wolves were close to going ahead in the first half when Max Kilman’s header struck the post.

But the game came down to two penalties, both awarded after VAR checks.

Adama Traore’s shot struck Harry Toffolo’s arm and, after a lengthy review, referee Thomas Bramall went to the monitor to eventually award the penalty, which Neves fired home.

VAR intervened again after Matheus Nunes pulled back Ryan Yates, but Johnson couldn’t beat Sa from the spot.

Forest dropped to the bottom before kickoff after Leicester drew with Crystal Palace 0-0.

“We’re trying to improve every day and stick to what we believe is going to be the right way to go and we’re navigating our way through to that,” Forest manager Steve Copper said. “The players will want to take responsibility as well and they’ll be frustrated with the first half performance.”

Ministry distances itself from Finbar Ryan home

Finbar Ryan Geriatric Home in Diego Martin. – ROGER JACOB

THE MINISTRY of Social Development and Family Services (MSDFS) is distancing itself from any connection to the Finbar Ryan Geriatric Home in Goodwood Gardens, Diego Martin, after a social media post highlighted poor conditions being faced by its residents.

The ministry issued a statement on Friday, saying the home is privately owned and does not receive subventions from the government but is managed and operated by the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a non-governmental organisation that falls under the purview of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese.

On Thursday, Progressive Empowerment Party political leader Phillip Edwards Alexander recorded a live video on his Facebook page alleging the home was without sufficient funding and residents “were note being attended to” after the Ministry of Social Development “fired St Vincent de Paul.”

He said the residents were “trapped between a black hole between the State and the law.”

The ministry said its relationship with the Society of St Vincent de Paul existed since 1991 for the management and operation of the Centre for Socially Displaced Persons (CSDP), located at Besson Street, Port of Spain.

The agreement came to an end in August when the ministry terminated the existing agreement and relocated the residents to other homes.

“This followed several attempts to get the Society of St Vincent De Paul to be more accountable and transparent in their reporting and operations, with regard to management of the CSDP.

“Coupled with this, the venue had outgrown its original purpose in terms of being a facility for long-term residential accommodation.

“To date, all residents of the centre have been relocated based on alternative options which were made available to them.”

The ministry said it has two clients under the Community Care programme at the home.

It added that the ministry itself visited the home on May 17 and a later meeting “related to guidance to improve standards of care was held in September.”

“(The MSDFS) reaffirms its commitment to the care and protection of older persons and therefore any form of abuse of older persons is of grave concern.

“Similar to other reports of elder abuse received by the Ministry, investigators from the Division of Ageing visited the Finbar Ryan Home yesterday (Thursday) and reported that the residents were in reasonably good health and did not require urgent medical attention.”

Food and Agriculture Organisation official: keep an eye on Haiti

Head of the Food and Agriculture Organisation TT (FAOTT) Reuben Robertson said Trinidad and Tobago should keep an eye on the emerging food and social crisis in Haiti and use it as an example of how conflict and improper food productions systems could affect food availability on a country.

“Haiti is right in our back yards and it is a good example of some of the things that we should not do, to avoid falling into the same trap,” Robertson said.

The political, economic, security and health crises in Haiti has left vulnerable Haitians in a cycle of desperation without access to food, fuel, markets, jobs and public services, grinding the nation to a standstill, the FAO said in a joint release with the UN’s World Food programme.

“According to the latest IPC analysis a record 4.7 million people are currently facing acute hunger (IPC 3 and above), including 1.8 million people in emergency phase (IPC 4) and, for the first time ever in Haiti, 19,000 people are in catastrophe phase (IPC 5),” the release said.

It added that Cité Soleil has seen a worrisome rise in food insecurity over the past three years with 65 per cent of the population in high levels of food insecurity.

“The issue that FAO has there is being able to mobilise into the communities that are vulnerable because access to these communities is really hindered by the current uprising,”

The FAO/WFP release said that despite the security situation in Port-au-Prince and Cite Soleil where gangs have taken over the streets, cutting off vulnerable citizens from work, markets or food aid, the WFP was able to provide more than 100,000 people with emergency assistance this year.

“WFP’s focus remains on strengthening national social protection and food systems that are central to the country’s recovery efforts and long-term development,” the release said.

Robertson said TT, the rest of the region and the world on the whole was faced with similar circumstances because of the Russian/Ukrainian war, as the conflict was one of the causes of an increase in food prices and a decrease in food availability for most countries. However, the last FAO food price index indicates some level of return to pre-war food prices.

“Last month the index showed that edible oils was had the biggest reduction in prices. Then we had the meat from bovines, sugar and some of the other commodities. Cereals were the only ones that showed some increase but with Brazil and Argentina increasing production we see some of the cereals have remained stable.”

Robertson was speaking to reporters at the FAO World Food Day’s prize-giving ceremony for its arts and essay competition at its head office on Serpentine Road, St Clair on Friday where five children were given various awards including hydroponic systems, and free tours at a bird sanctuary.

Robertson in his keynote address said the FAO is focusing on the youth to achieve the sustainable development goals and maximise its efforts to realise the four betters – better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life.

“Older people are more resistant to change,” he said. “But young people like challenges and when we introduce the technology and we make the environment available to the youth to be able to invest we expect that they will grab the opportunity.”

“We are depending on the young people and the women to change this whole system of agricultural transformation.”
