SHOT DEAD: Schoolboy Jamal Modeste, nine, who was killed in a drive-by shooting at the African recreation grounds in Enterprise, Chaguanas on Saturday night.

The mother of a Morvant boy who survived being shot in August has described the killing of nine-year-old Jamal Modeste as heartbreaking as she lamented continued gun violence.

Javon Prince, eight, was shot in the head in August while gunmen chased a 38-year-old man in a Morvant basketball court.

Speaking with Newsday by phone on Monday, Prince’s mother Marcia Burke said she was disturbed after hearing Modeste had been gunned down at a playing field in Enterprise, Chaguanas, on Saturday night.

“It really breaks my heart to see children just have to go through things like this sometimes they survive and sometimes they die… it’s really sad.

“We need more police patrols – that’s what I think.”

She said Javon was discharged shortly after the shooting but was back in hospital up to Monday. She said he was conscious and capable of walking on his own and expected him to be discharged later this week.

Asked if she had any advice for Jamal’s family, she suggested they should try to seek comfort from prayer.

Newsday also spoke to a senior police officer in the Central Division, who said he was unsettled by Jamal’s murder and it was difficult for him to accept.

“I visited the family yesterday (Sunday) and I told them that this incident really wrenched my guts.

“I didn’t want to visit them just as a senior officer in the division, but as a father, an uncle, as someone with a family. The children are our future, and when you see incidents like this, where an innocent child who didn’t do anything to anyone, die like this from people shooting wild without regard to anyone, it really makes your blood boil.”

The officer said he hoped the community would partner with the police to help find those responsible.

Police could not be sure of a motive for the murder, he said.

The Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region III is continuing enquiries.

Holder urges West Indies to ‘hit the ground running’ vs Zimbabwe

West Indies captain Jason Holder

JASON Holder has urged his West Indies teammates to “hit the ground running” when they face Zimbabwe in their ICC T20 World Cup First Round Group B encounter at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart, Australia on Wednesday.

At the Bellerive Oval on Monday, the West Indies were soundly beaten by 42 runs against Scotland while Zimbabwe whipped Ireland by 31 runs.

Holder was one of the few shining lights for the West Indies on Monday. He took two wickets for 14 runs, off three overs, as Scotland posted 160 runs for the loss of five wickets. Holder then top-scored with 38, off 33 balls, as the West Indies were bowled out for 118 off 18.3 overs.

Holder touched on the attitude within the squad after the Scotland defeat.

“We had a tough start (on Monday),” he said, during a Zoom media conference on Tuesday (Monday evening TT time). “We’re all disappointed by the performance that we had, but I think the most important thing for us is to come together, even tighter now, and try to find solutions.

“We had a pretty good chat after the game and I’m sure guys went into their rooms and reflected on their performance (on Monday). No doubt I think we have what it takes to turn it around and it’s more-or-less hitting the ground running against Zimbabwe, starting that game well and beating them.”

The top two teams from this group will advance to the Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup.

The West Indies lost five wickets to spin on Monday, with left-armer Mark Watt taking 3/12 and off-spinner Michael Leask 2/15.

Holder made it clear that “I’m not too worried about us playing against spin. For us, it’s about playing situations a little bit better, building a few more partnerships in the middle phases of the innings and setting it up nicely for the heavy hitters in the back.”

Asked what the West Indies team expect from Zimbabwe, Holder replied, “They seem to be on a nice winning streak (eight out of their last nine T20 Internationals) so we expect a highly competitive game and probably one of the toughest games we’ll have in this competition, and no doubt we know the magnitude of the game.”

The two-time T20 World Cup champions are known for their six-hitting ability, but Holder commented, “We’ve got to find solutions. We obviously didn’t bat well (on Monday) and we’ve probably let ourselves down with the bat in the recent past.

“We just need to understand what is required of us when we go out to bat and find ways to form partnerships, to make it easier as we go on in the tournament.”

About the pace-friendly conditions in Australia, the experienced fast-medium bowler said, “The conditions here are really good for bowling. You tend to get a little bit more bounce on these surfaces and a little bit more movement.

“Maybe we’ve got to be a little bit more clinical when we bowl and definitely improve on our batting.”

Nicki Minaj Says Grammys Gaslight Her Fans Amid Reports She Has 5 Nods

Nicki Minaj claims that the ongoing melee with her song “Super Freaky Girl” being removed from the rap category is the Grammys gaslighting her fans.

In an Instagram Live with Mack Maine on Sunday, Nicki Minaj called out the Recording Academy for seemingly deflecting from addressing the reason she was removed from the category.

“Instead of Grammys coming out and saying we aren’t changing our decision because we honestly don’t give a f***, they said, ‘well, we’re not gonna respond to why we moved Super Freaky Girl into a pop category, we’re just gonna tell all the black people and the hip hop culture that well Nicki is nominated in the rap category… she’s nominated in the rap category for ‘Do We Have A Problem,’ she’s nominated in the rap category for ‘Blick Blick’,” Nicki said.

Nicki Minaj also added that the Recording Academy claims she is in the rap category for other submissions. However, the rapper claims that submitting records doesn’t mean a song will be nominated so that she can submit a pool of songs, and it might not be selected by the nominating committee.

“This is another way that they are gaslighting y’all,” she said.

“I was talking about ‘Super Freaky Girls,’ but the Grammys have not responded to SFG but they have directed y’all attention to ‘Do We Have a Problem’. What does ‘Do We Have A Problem’ have to do with SFG?” the rapper asked.

Nicki Minaj also mentioned Drake and Kanye West’s outspoken statements against the Grammy, including Drake being upset at the organization for placing his rap songs into the pop category.

Nicki Minaj, who has been nominated just shy of a dozen times by the Grammys, has never won an award. The rapper was not pleased by the Grammys decision and said it ‘gaslit’ her fans with another of her collaboration.

“They just gaslit my fans into telling them ‘well “Do We Have a Problem” is in the rap category so um yea’. So, therefore, we’re supposed to say forget about the reason she spoke about this at all and let’s just say thanks for calling “Do We Have A Problem” rap, Grammys thank you’” Minaj said sarcastically.

The “Starships” rapper’s statement follows the news that her solo track “Super Freaky Girl” was removed from the Grammys rap category and moved to a pop category. Nicki Minaj had initially directed her anger at fellow rapper Latto, who is also nominated in the category for her song “Big Energy.”

On Twitter, Nicki Minaj used Latto’s song as an example of why it should also be moved to the pop category if SFG was pop. However, Latto didn’t like the comparison and messaged the Trinidadian rapper telling her not to use her song in bashing the Grammy.

The rappers ended up squabbling on Twitter last week as they each took jabs about their writing skills and age. Minaj continues to be upset at the shift while Latto’s song remains on the list for best rap song nomination.

In the meantime, the Grammys has not given an explanation for the move.

AFTER a month, the police are still unable to issue certificates of character, a key requisite for many job-seekers, the police told Newsday on Tuesday.

One woman bitterly complained to Newsday on Monday that she and dozens of colleagues, who were unemployed or laid off from the health sector post-covid19, have arranged jobs overseas but were now being kept back by not being able to supply certificates of character to their prospective employers.

On September 14, a police statement said the certificates could not be issued because of an unspecified system malfunction. “The TTPS is working to restore the system, which has been experiencing technical difficulties for the past several months, to its optimal function.

“The public will be updated as to when the CoC system is repaired. The TTPS apologises for all inconveniences for the disruption in service and assures that all possible efforts are being made to remedy the situation in the shortest possible time frame.”

On Thursday, Insp Michelle Lewis of the police communications unit told Newsday the system was still not working, and did not say when it was likely to be back up. “Kindly be advised that the service is still down and we are working feverishly to resolve this issue.”Please continue to check our social media pages and our website for further updates.”

Lewis said people could still go to appointments for certificates and then present the receipt as proof to relevant agencies. “When the system is back up and functioning,” she said, “the CoC validity period of six months will commence from that time.”
