A joint-services operation on Friday along the Berbice River in Region Six, has resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of marijuana and two firearms at separate camps.

The narcotics eradication exercise was conducted at DeVeldt Savannah in the Berbice River, by officers and ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Marine Section and Narcotics Branch, along with ranks from the Guyana Defence Force’s Coast Guard between 05:00 hours to 14:00 hours.

During the exercise, one marijuana farm, two camps and two drying areas were located.

The farm measured about four acres, with about 20,000 cannabis plants measuring from six inches to two feet in high.

A 37-year-old farmer of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara and Wiruni Berbice River, was found on the farm attending to the cannabis plants, and he was arrested.

When the ranks conducted a search on the first camp, a suspected 12 gauge shot gun, loaded with three live cartridges, one Guyana Passport, one Identification card and one birth certificate in favour of the farmer who was arrested, were found.

Searches were also conducted on the second camp where a suspected 12 gauge shot gun along with four live twelve gauge cartridges were found.

The ranks also searched the two drying areas and a quantity of dry cannabis was found with an estimated weight of about 800 pounds. The estimated weight for the cannabis plants is 400 pounds. The total street value of the cannabis found during the operation is $489 million.

A gasoline plow, several farming tools and spray can was also found in the camp. The plants, camps and drying areas, farming tools and spray can were all destroyed by fire.

The farmer was escorted to Central Police Station where he was placed into custody and the suspected firearms and ammunition lodged.

Boris Johnson returns to UK amidst rumours he will run for PM Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson returned to Britain on Saturday morning, ahead of a possible tilt at reclaiming his former job.

Johnson was ousted by a series of ethics scandals just three months ago, but boarded a flight back to London from his vacation in the Dominican Republic, days after the dramatic resignation of his successor, Liz Truss.

Johnson has not officially said he is running but some allies in the parliamentary party have been loudly calling for his return. Tory lawmakers wishing to enter the race must secure the backing of 100 of their colleagues by 2pm on Monday.

A return by Johnson would be an astonishing recovery for a polarising figure forced out by a welter of ethics scandals. Opponents say giving him another chance would only lead to more controversy and disappointment.

The leadership uncertainty comes at a time of weak economic growth and as millions struggle with higher borrowing costs and rising prices for groceries, fuel and other basics. A growing wave of strikes by train and postal workers, lawyers and others has revealed mounting discontent as a recession looms.

Truss quit Thursday after a turbulent 45 days, conceding that she could not deliver on her tax-cutting economic package, which she was forced to abandon after it caused turmoil in financial markets.

HOUSTON (AP) — Ja Morant scored 49 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 129-122 victory over the Houston Rockets in the NBA on Friday night.

Morant carried the team on a night Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones struggled. Bane made just 3 of 16 shots for 14 points and Jones was 4 for 13 with 11 points.

Morant had another great game after scoring 34 points in the opener to lead Memphis to a 115-112 overtime victory over the Knicks.

The Rockets led by 16 in the first half before the Grizzlies used a big run to start the third quarter and take the lead.

Jalen Green, the second pick in the 2021 draft, led the Rockets with 33 points. But he struggled after halftime and scored just 13 points in the second half. Alperen Sengun added 23 points for the Rockets, who fell to 0-2.

NUGGETS 128, WARRIORS 123

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Nikola Jokic had a triple-double of 26 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists playing with a sore right wrist he had taped, and Denver Nuggets beat Golden State Warriors in a rematch of the teams’ first-round playoff series won by the Warriors in five games on their way to the title.

Stephen Curry scored 34 points with five 3-pointers after a second straight slow start shooting and has 30-point performances in his first two games. But the Warriors committed 19 turnovers that led to 30 Denver points.

Bruce Brown scored 20 points and Michael Porter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 17 apiece for the Nuggets, who handed the Warriors their lone loss in the preseason last Friday night.

TRAIL BLAZERS 113, SUNS 111, OT

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard scored 41 points and Portland Trail Blazers beat Phoenix Suns for their second straight victory to open the season.

Anfernee Simons made a layup with 7.2 seconds left in overtime and finished with 16 points. Jusuf Nurkic had 20 points and 17 rebounds.

Devin Booker led Phoenix with 33 points. His layup gave Phoenix a 109-106 lead early in the extra period.

Lillard’s free throws with 33.9 seconds left tied it at 111. Booker missed a short jumper before Simons’ layup put Portland in front. Nurkic fouled Deandre Ayton on the other end, but Ayton missed the first, then missed the second on purpose for a failed try at a tying basket.

CELTICS 111, HEAT 104

MIAMI (AP) — Jayson Tatum scored 29 points, Jaylen Brown added 28 and Boston Celtics beat Miami Heat in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

The Celtics — whose most recent trip to Miami was a Game 7 win in that playoff series — outscored Miami 42-24 from 3-point range, and improved to 2-0 under interim coach Joe Mazzulla.

Tyler Herro scored 25 points for Miami, which got 19 from Bam Adebayo, 18 from Jimmy Butler and 17 from Kyle Lowry.

Miami cut a 14-point deficit to five late, before back-to-back paint baskets by Tatum and the Celtics would hold on.

It’s Miami’s first 0-2 start since 2007-08 — meaning it’s the first in Erik Spoelstra’s 15-year run as Heat coach. Miami had been one of only two teams without an 0-2 start in the last 15 seasons; now, Portland are the only team on that list.

NETS 109, RAPTORS 105

NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Durant broke a tie with a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left and had 27 points to help Brooklyn Nets beat Toronto Raptors.

Durant’s 3 gave Brooklyn a 105-102 lead. Kyrie Irving led the Nets with 30 points.

Pascal Siakam led the Raptors with 37 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Fred VanVleet added 18 points and Scottie Barnes had 17.

VanVleet’s jumper with 38 seconds left brought the Raptors within one. But Royce O’Neale’s 3-pointer with 15 seconds left wrapped up the victory.

KNICKS 130, PISTONS 106

NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson scored 17 points in his first home game at Madison Square Garden, Immanuel Quickley bounced back from a rough opener with 20 points and New York Knicks beat Detroit Pistons for their first victory of the season.

RJ Barrett, who also struggled with his shot in an overtime loss in Memphis in the season opener, rebounded with 18 points. Obi Toppin scored 16 points, and Julius Randle had 15.

Saddiq Bey scored 26 points for the Pistons, who beat Orlando in their opener.

JAZZ 132, TIMBERWOLVES 126, OT

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jordan Clarkson scored 29 points on 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range to lead Utah’s rally, and the Jazz outlasted former teammate Rudy Gobert and Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime.

Lauri Markkanen had 24 points and 13 rebounds and got a leaner in the lane to fall with 12 seconds left in the extra period to put the Jazz up by four.

Mike Conley gave the Jazz the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 1:01 left. Gobert had a dunk foiled by a foul on Conley with 34 seconds to go, and he missed both free throws to finish with nine points and 23 rebounds.

Anthony Edwards scored 30 points for Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and D’Angelo Russell added 23 points including the tying jumper with 4.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

PELICANS 124, HORNETS 112

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jonas Valanciunas had 30 points and 17 rebounds and New Orleans Pelicans spoiled Charlotte’s home opener with a wire-to-wire victory.

Brandon Ingram added 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Pelicans and C.J. McCollum had 21 points. Zion Williamson had a quiet night in his first game at the Spectrum Center since leading Duke to the 2019 ACC Championship, finishing with 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting.

The Pelicans opened Wednesday night with a 130-108 victory at Brooklyn.

Terry Rozier flirted with a triple-double for the Hornets with 23 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Gordon Hayward had 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting and added seven assists.

WIZARDS 102, BULLS 100

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bradley Beal’s leaning bank shot with 7.4 seconds remaining lifted Washington Wizards past Chicago in their first home game since the star guard signed his massive new contract.

Washington blew a 17-point third-quarter lead in their home opener, but with the game tied at 100 and the shot clock running down, Beal’s shot off the glass dropped through to give the Wizards the lead. Following a timeout, DeMar DeRozan’s 3-pointer was just off the mark for Chicago.

DeRozan had 32 points to lead all scorers, and the Bulls nearly won their second straight game to start the season without Zach LaVine. Instead, it was Washington that improved to 2-0. Kyle Kuzma scored 26 points and Beal added 19.

SPURS 137, PACERS 134

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Richardson scored 27 points and Devin Vassell and Josh Richardson each had 23 as San Antonio Spurs survived a frantic final minute flurry to beat Indiana Pacers.

Tyrese Haliburton led Indiana with 27 points and 12 assists. Rookie Bennedict Mathurin scored 26 points, and his attempt to force overtime with a 3-point shot at the buzzer was an airball.

The Pacers have not led in either of their games this season after finishing last season with 10 consecutive losses. Their last win came March 20.

HAWKS 108, MAGIC 98

ATLANTA (AP) — Trae Young overcame a scoreless first half to finish with 25 points and 13 assists, John Collins added 23 points and 13 rebounds and Atlanta Hawks beat Orlando Magic.

Gastroenteritis alert; one suspected death under investigation – MOHW Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The Ministry of Health and Wellness urges the public to take measures to prevent gastroenteritis (GE) and to seek care early to avoid serious complications.

“This follows one suspected case of GE death, which is now being investigated. GE causes irritation and inflammation of the stomach and intestines, resulting in diarrhoea (running belly) and/or vomitting,” a release from the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), said.

Both adults and children can contract GE through bacteria, viruses or parasites in contaminated or spoiled food, unclean water or dirty hands. GE can cause death, especially in young children because of dehydration (losing too much fluid).

Symptoms of GE include diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and an upset stomach. The affected person may also experience headaches, fever and abdominal cramps or stomach aches.

Meanwhile, data from the Ministry’s National Surveillance Unit shows that although weekly 2022 figures have been higher than the previous year, the case figures for the intestinal infection are not unusual.

The Surveillance Unit reports that for 2022, it recorded an average visitation of 107 children under 5 years old to facilities across the island and 31 such visits in 2021.

The Ministry is urging caution as cases of GE are expected to increase in the cooler months of the year. Parents and caregivers are especially advised to pay attention to their children.

“Medication should not be used to stop diarrhoea or vomiting. Instead, oral rehydration fluid (ORF) should be used to replace the water and special substances that are lost as a result of diarrhoea and/or vomiting,” the MOHW said.

Children should ingest ORF until their condition improves although the treatment will not stop or

shorten the course of diarrhoea.

“If a child is breastfed, continue breastfeeding frequently. Other fluids, such as coconut water, diluted fruit juices, as well as plain water, can also be given. Do not give sweet drinks,” said Dr. Webster-Kerr, Acting Chief Medical Officer(CMO).

“If the symptoms do not improve, visit your health care provider,” the acting CMO

Kiwis upstage defending champion Australia in T20 World Cup Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

SYDNEY (AP) — Devon Conway and Finn Allen plundered 46 runs off the first three overs to set New Zealand on course for a thumping 89-run win over defending champion Australia on Saturday in the opening game of the Super 12 stage at the T20 World Cup.

Less than a year after losing the 2021 final to Australia in Dubai, the New Zealanders dominated immediately after being sent in to bat in overcast conditions and posted 200-3, their highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup game.

Australia were bowled out for 111 in 17.1 overs in reply for their biggest-ever defeat in a T20 World Cup game, with Tim Southee taking the first and the last wickets to secure New Zealand’s first win here in 11 years.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult, second right, is congratulated by teammates after dismissing Australia’s Pat Cummins. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft).

“An outstanding day. Finn set the tone and another class innings from Devon,” New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson said. “Something to build on for our next one.”

Conway blazed an unbeaten 92 from 58 balls and hit the last ball of the innings for six. The end of New Zealand’s innings reflected the start, with the opening pair putting on 56 in 4.1 overs before Allen was bowled by Josh Hazlewood.

“Special performance by the boys tonight,” Conway said. “Credit to Finn how he started, he got the momentum going.

“Quite a young guy in his career but he’s explosive, and he’s fearless.”

He certainly was. The 23-year-old Allen, who only found out Friday night that he’d be starting, hit the second ball of the match for a boundary and the third for a six over mid-on, and then drove a boundary straight down the ground as New Zealand took 14 off the first over from paceman Mitch Starc.

They took 15 off the second over, with Conway turning the first ball from Hazlewood to the boundary at fine leg, and continued the onslaught against Australia’s high-caliber pace trio with 17 off the third over, bowled by Pat Cummins.

Allen, who had a reprieve when he was dropped on 19, clubbed 42 from 16 deliveries before he was bowled by a Hazlewood yorker to start the fifth over.

Conway continued in a 69-run second-wicket stand with Williamson, who scored a run-a-ball 23, Glenn Phillips (12) and Jimmy Neesham to keep the run-rate going at 10 per over.

Australia by contrast lost wickets regularly, beginning with the first ball of the second over when David Warner (5) tried to hit across the line against Southee but only dragged it onto his thigh, then the back of his bat and onto his stumps.

Glenn Maxwell top scored for Australia with 28 while Southee (3-6) and Santner (3-31) took three wickets apiece and kept the run-flow down. The lopsided defeat already has Australia under pressure to make the top two in the group and reach the playoffs.

“They got the jump on us early in those first four overs with the bat and we never really recovered,” Australia captain Aaron Finch said. “They were in front of the game the whole way. We were totally outplayed.”

England won the toss and chose to bowl first against Afghanistan in Perth later Saturday in the second game.

The tournament has been running for a week, with eight teams vying for four places to qualify for the Super 12s.

Sri Lanka topped Pool A in the preliminary round and Ireland beat the two-time champion West Indies on Friday to secure second spot in Pool B and join Australia, New Zealand, England and Afghanistan in Group 1 for the second round.

Group 2 is set for a blockbuster opener on Sunday with archrivals India and Pakistan meeting at a sold out Melbourne Cricket Ground in a night match, after Sri Lanka and Ireland have played in Hobart.

Zimbabwe topped Pool B in qualifying and Netherlands placed second in Pool A to join India, Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh in Group 2 for the Super 12 stage that will finish Nov. 6.

The top two teams in each groups will advance to the semifinals, and the semifinal winners will meet in the final on Nov. 13 at the MCG.

Tech journalist warns after attack on Massy Group: TT at mercy of cyber criminals

Black Immigrant Daily News

News

Tech expert and Newsday columnist Mark Lyndersay. FILE PHOTO –

TECH expert and Newsday columnist Mark Lyndersay said the private sector’s strategy of keeping its cyber-attacks secret, hoping it would go away, is an archaic move, showing TT’s response to cyber crimes is stuck in the past.

“Malware and ransomware continue to become more sophisticated and TT’s response to it remains adamantly 20th century,” Lyndersay said on Friday.

“Until the laws regarding privacy, personally identifiable information, cybercrime and corporate responsibility for these issues are proclaimed, companies and the public sector are under no obligation to even report breaches, far less notify affected citizens.”

Lyndersay’s statement came on the heels of a release sent by the Massy Group, which sought to dismiss claims made by a Jamaican newspaper that some 17 gigabytes of data were dumped on the internet by cyber criminals on October 9.

The report claimed the data included personal information such as names, addresses, taxpayer registration numbers, signatures videos and pictures of employees and contractors in Massy Jamaica.

“We would like to caution that much of the information being shared publicly about this cyber-security incident is speculative and inaccurate,” Massy said in the release.

It invited people to use official channels for information.

On April 8 Massy’s branches in TT experienced a cyber attack which held critical information to ransom. The attack froze the nation’s largest grocery chain’s point card system and exfiltrated an estimated 216 gigabytes of data before encrypting it.

A July 12 report by Red Packet Security, a cyber-attack tracker, issued a notice saying that the exfiltrated files were posted on the dark web.

On July 19 the hackers published the entire load of data on the dark web. Five days after that, reports said, Jamaica was hacked.

In a release sent to the media Massy admitted that more damage was done than previously thought.

“Through continued investigation of the cyber-security incident, we are now aware that that data unlawfully accessed by the attackers was more extensive than the preliminary stages of the investigation indicated,” the release said.

Route 3 maxi drivers to ban schoolchildren for a day

Black Immigrant Daily News

In solidarity with Varindra Singh, a route-three maxi taxi driver beaten by a group of schoolchildren on Monday, his fellow drivers on that route will spend a day of “rest and reflection,” during which they will not transport schoolchildren.

Vickash Kissoondath, president of that route’s association, announced this on Friday at a press conference in Port of Spain held by the Concerned Parents Movement.

Singh tried to protect one of his passengers from a group of children, using a spanner to scare them off. But instead, the students ganged up, beating him up as well as a student named Rasheed Lal.

Singh suffered a broken nose and damaged jaw, among other injuries, and doctors have told him not to drive for six months.

The attackers were students from the Carapichaima East and West secondary schools.

Kissoondath said drivers on that route have been “avoiding the students on a daily basis” since the incident.

“At least 85 per cent (of the drivers) are willing to attribute a day to not taking up any schoolchildren whatsoever.”

This, he hopes, “will bring a greater understanding of how important the maxi taxi service is in Trinidad and Tobago.”

He said the association is waiting to see what the Ministry of National Security does about the incident.
