Grâce à un triplé de Loïs Openda en seconde période, Lens a conforté sa deuxième place en remportant une nouvelle victoire dans son chaudron de Bollaert-Delelis face à Toulouse (3-0), vendredi en ouverture de la 13e journée de L1.
Entré en jeu à la 56e minute, l’international belge de 22 ans a régalé le public en inscrivant trois buts (60e, 86e, 90e+2) pour faire plier un promu toulousain qui n’a pourtant pas démérité.
Pour leur quatorzième match à domicile à guichets fermés consécutif, les Sang et Or ont remercié leurs supporters en poursuivant leur impressionnant sans-faute avec une septième victoire en sept matches cette saison.
Le RCL, qui s’est même permis de luxe de manquer un penalty, a toutefois eu du mal à forcer le verrou du +Téfécé+, très bien organisé et dangereux en contre. Mais Openda, qui n’avait plus marqué depuis la 6e journée, ne lui a laissé aucune chance…
Après ce neuvième succès de la saison, Lens, qui réalise la meilleure entame de son histoire, totalise déjà 30 points et a consolidé sa place de dauphin du Paris SG, qui trône en tête de la L1 avec 32 unités au compteur avant de recevoir Troyes samedi (17h00).
Le promu toulousain reste installé en milieu de tableau avec 16 points (10e) mais aura encore deux matches compliqués avant la trêve face à Monaco et Rennes.
Lens a confisqué le ballon d’entrée et la première occasion a logiquement été artésienne avec un rush de David Pereira Da Costa, qui a servi à l’entrée de la surface Seko Fofana, dont la frappe en pivot s’est envolée dans les gradins (7e).
Sur la suivante, encore plus franche, le RCL n’a pas réussi à concrétiser une transition rapide après un corner toulousain: Da Costa a décalé Fofana, lequel a prolongé pour Przemyslaw Frankowski, dont le centre a été repris par l’Ivoirien qui a tiré juste à côté (13e).
Si les Sang et Or avaient le contrôle des opérations, il a toutefois fallu deux tacles salvateurs dans la surface de Deiver Machado devant Brecht Dejaegere (28e) puis du revenant Jonathan Gradit face à Zakaria Aboukhal (33e) pour empêcher les Violets d’ouvrir le score contre le cours du jeu.
Au retour des vestiaires, Lens a gâché l’occasion de prendre les commandes quand Fofana a vu son penalty, obtenu quelques secondes plus tôt par Pereira Da Costa, être repoussé par Dupé (50e).
Franck Haise a alors lancé Openda et Florian Sotoca, deux titulaires habituels qu’il avait laissés sur le banc, pour redynamiser son équipe. Et son coaching s’est vite avéré gagnant !
Au terme de plusieurs passes redoublées, l’ancien Grenoblois a délivré un centre fuyant qui a été repris victorieusement de la tête par l’international belge (1-0, 60e).
Openda a ensuite profité d’une mauvaise passe en retrait toulousaine pour devancer Anthony Rouault et sécuriser la victoire lensoise (2-0, 86e), avant d’enflammer Bollaert en s’offrant un triplé d’une jolie frappe croisée (90e+2).

The International Energy Conference and Expo (IECEG) today announced the appointment of Mr. Kurt Baboolall as Chief Executive Officer, with effect from October 1, 2022.
Mr. Baboolall holds a Master’s of Business Administration from the Australian Institute of Business, a Degree in Business Management, and a Diploma in Banking and Finance from the University of Guyana.
Prior to his appointment, he served as the Director of Operations for IECEG 2022. Speaking on his appointment Mr. Baboolall said “I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of an organization that was responsible for bringing together Heads of State and Heads of Government, Policymakers, Academics and Energy Industry Executives to discuss ideas around the further development of Guyana’s burgeoning energy sector.

Before his tenure at IECEG, Kurt was Business Development Manager – of Ibis Construction Equipment Sales & Rentals (ICON) – a Joint Venture with Farfan & Mendes & FT Farfan from Trinidad between 2016-2020, Business Manager at Scotiabank between 2006-2016 and Seasonal Auditor for the Edward Beharry Group of Companies between 2000-2004.

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport wishes to inform the public that the Rockhall – Pavee intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic from Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022.
This closure is necessary in order to effect urgent replacement of a damaged culvert at that intersection, which has severely compromised the structural integrity of that section of road, risking collapse at any point in time.
As a result, motorists will be unable to enter Rockhall via the Pavee Road, and vice versa until the repair works have been completed.
The estimated time for completion is two (2) weeks.

With consideration given to the considerable use of both Rockall and Pavee as main thoroughfares for many motorists, a traffic management plan will be communicated to the public in the coming days.
The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport regrets any inconveniences caused as a result of this closure.

Each year, the Jamaica Fire Brigade joins the rest of the world in observing Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week to raise awareness of the importance of being prepared in the event of a fire.
This year, it is being observed between Sunday, October 23 and Saturday, October 29, under the theme “Preserving the Nation through Life Safety and Fire Prevention”, with a focus on the disabilities and access and functional needs community.
According to Sean Martin, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, “The Brigade will be using this opportunity to engage primarily with persons with disabilities and their caregivers to improve the levels of fire safety being experienced by this vulnerable group.”
Martin continued, “we are pleased to have formed partnerships with public and private stakeholders, such as Seprod that is providing support in the form of products from their distribution line.”
Seprod Foundation answered the call and has offered support by providing over 200,000 worth of products to be distributed to children’s homes and households that have been affected by fire, and by assisting in raising awareness about the importance of fire safety and prevention. The products were handed over to the Jamaica Fire Brigade on October 24, 2022, to support the activities for the rest of the week.
Richard Pandohie, CEO of the Seprod Group of Companies and Director of Seprod Foundation commented: “We continue to be heart-broken by the cases of families being devastated by the loss of their loved ones due to fire; as recently as September, 3 children died after a fire destroyed their home. We want to stop these tragedies, and this is why the Seprod Foundation is working with the Jamaica Fire Brigade during Fire and Life Safety Awareness week to highlight the steps that each of us can take to ensure the safety of our lives and that of our families and colleagues. We also want to salute the men and women in our Fire Brigade for the sacrifices that they make on a daily basis.”
About one year ago, Seprod experienced a fire that destroyed the Facey Commodity warehouse and offices at Newport West.

Spain’s state prosecutor dropped its charges against Neymar on Friday, but a Brazilian company involved in the case will continue to fight the soccer player in court.
The case stems from Neymar’s transfer in 2013 from Santos to Barcelona.
The state prosecutor withdrew all charges against Neymar, his father and the former executives of the Brazilian and Spanish clubs. However, the trial will continue because Brazilian company DIS, which brought the case, maintained its accusation that the parties involved committed fraud and corruption.
DIS claims that it was paid far less than the 40 per cent it says it was due as part owners of Neymar’s player rights.
The state prosecutor announced the decision to drop the case after hearing testimony from former Barcelona executives Sandro Rosell and Josep Bartomeu on Friday. State prosecutor Luis Garc?a told the court he did not see any evidence that a crime was committed.
All the defendants deny any wrongdoing.
State prosecutors had been seeking a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 10 million euros ($10 million) for Neymar. They had also wanted five years for Rosell and three years for the former president of Santos, Odilio Rodrigues.
Neymar, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain, told the court last week that he had “followed my heart and chose Bar?a.”
DIS is seeking five-year jail terms for the 30-year-old Neymar, his father, Rosell and Bartomeu. DIS also wants compensation of 34 million euros ($34 million) and a fine of 195 million euros ($194 million) that would be paid by the accused to the Spanish state.
“In the opinion of DIS, no new evidence has appeared in the five days of this trial to justify changing our stance regarding what took place,” DIS said in a statement shared with The Associated Press.
DIS, which owns a chain of supermarkets in Brazil’s S?o Paulo region, said it acquired rights to receive 40 per cent of a future Neymar transfer in 2009 when it paid Neymar’s family 5 million Brazilian reals (then $2 million).
DIS says it only received its due percentage from the 17 million euros ($17 million) that Barcelona and Santos initially announced as the transfer fee between the clubs, while the real cost was about 82 million euros ($82 million).
The trial is expected to conclude on Monday.

ANOTHER assistant commissioner of the Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) is threatening the State with legal action, alleging she was bypassed for promotion as chairman in favour of a junior officer.
On Wednesday, attorneys for Sabetaa Lall sent a pre-action protocol letter to the Office of the Attorney General, setting out the alleged “unlawful and unconstitutional” conduct of the State.
Attorneys Dinesh Rambally, Kiel Taklalsingh, Stefan Ramkissoon, Kristy Mohan, and Rhea Khan said Lall was the best person for the job.
Taklalsingh said because of the powers the chairman of the BIR possesses in prosecuting citizens, searching and seizing property, and accessing private financial information, any decision to appoint a chairman must be transparent.
He said Lall, who is due to retire in 2024, was appointed assistant commissioner in 2015, and since 2018, she has acted as commissioner and continues to do so.
Taklalsingh alleged after a recommendation for another senior commissioner to act as chairman was rescinded two weeks after it was made in December 2020, the Ministry of Finance’s permanent secretary recommended a field auditor and acting assistant commissioner to act as chairman ahead of four more senior commissioners, including Lall.
Another of the four acting commissioners bypassed was Rohonie Ramkissoon, who recently won her challenge of a decision by the Finance Minister not to recommend her as chairman of the BIR in 2021.
Justice Margaret Mohammed held Minister Colm Imbert acted unlawfully and irrationally when he decided not to recommend Ramkissoon. Imbert has said he intends to appeal the decision.
In the pre-action letter, Talkalsingh said after all four bypassed commissioners wrote to the Public Service Commission together, a memo was sent out rescinding the acting appointment, and interviews were held in February 2021. At that meeting, Lall was asked about the misappropriation of funds at the cashier’s unit of the BIR, which, at the time was her responsibility.
Lall said she was taken by surprise, since she was told not she would be called on to give an explanation. Her lawyer also said no allegation of impropriety has ever been levelled against her in relation to the missing funds.
Taklalsingh said while Lall responded, she did not know it would be used against her as a reason to bypass her.
The letter also said a recommendation was made a second time and she was again bypassed.
“We are of the considered view that our client has proper grounds to challenge the lawfulness and constitutionality of the continuing failure of the Minister of Finance to consider her for promotion to the post of commissioner.”
He said the decision to repeatedly bypass Lall was unfair, irrational, and unconstitutional.
“… To say the BIR and its chairman should be insulated from political influence and pressure and ought not to be beholden to a political officer is an understatement.”
He said the decision not to consider Lall for appointment “violently collides” with the constitutional provisions for the public service which are meant to “insulate members of the civil service from interference.”
“The assessment of taxes and validity of refunds are important functions which must be performed independently and be free of political suasion or influence.”
He said no minister can use “half-baked, unformed allegations and/or the purported need for investigations,” to disqualify anyone from serving as chairman of the BIR. Taklalsingh said solidly rational and cogent reasons must be provided for not making a recommendation and the process of dealing with any information must be lawfully fair.

Members of the Board of Directors at the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC Radio, have paid tribute to the late Chairman, Dwight Hillocks, who died on Thursday, October 6th.
The private funeral of Mr. Hillocks is set to take place tomorrow morning.
