“CRICKET was the loser.”

This was the emotional response of one member of the TT Red Force staff when asked to respond to the questionable tactics used by the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) to snatch a no result against TT in the CG United Super50 Cup, at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair on Monday.

Red Force were 74/1 after 15 overs, chasing 201 for victory, when rain stopped play for three hours.

After the rain delay, Red Force were set a revised target of 115 in 26 overs. Play resumed at 5 pm with light already fading.

Chasing the revised score, TT’s victory charge was stalled by CCC, who bowled just 3.5 overs in 35 minutes.

The umpires called the game off because of bad light at 5.35 pm. Red Force were only able to reach 97/1 in 18.5 overs.

A team batting second must face at least 20 overs before the Duckworth-Lewis method is used.

On multiple occasions CCC bowlers were almost in their delivery stride when they stopped. Jason Mohammed, who was batting with Kjorn Ottley, was visibly frustrated, gesturing at the opposition with his hands.

In another incident, a CCC player fell to the ground while fielding close to the boundary and one of the team’s trainers came onto the field, which caused a further delay.

CCC, captained by Trinidadian Denesh Ramdin, also bowled four of their five wides when play resumed at 5 pm.

At the Brian Lara Pavilion, TT players were clearly disgruntled by what was happening on the field.

Another talking point after the match was how did the umpires determine that 11 overs could have been completed when the match resumed at 5 pm. At this time of the year in Trinidad, natural light starts fading shortly after 5 pm.

After four matches, Red Force now have two wins, one loss and one no result.

CCC, batting first, were steady at the top of the order getting to 70/1 in the 19th over, led by former West Indies Under-19 player Kirstan Kallicharan.

Red Force fought back as Navin Bidaisee (17) and Kallicharan (37) fell in consecutive overs to leave CCC 72/3 in the 20th over.

Spin did the trick for Red Force as West Indies leg spinner Yannic Cariah dismissed Bidaisee and off spinner Mohammed removed Kallicharan.

The experienced Ramdin and Zavier Burton mounted a response. The pair put on 35 runs for the fourth wicket, but the Red Force bowlers kept the boundaries to a minimum.

Red Force, for the second time in the innings, took wickets in consecutive overs.

Burton was given leg before to medium pacer Terrance Hinds for 23 off 33 balls and leg spinner Imran Khan removed Ramdin for 12.

CCC were now 107/5 in the 29th over and desperate for a partnership.

Odain McCatty and Matthew Forde responded for CCC with both players attacking the Red Force bowlers.

In the 37th over, CCC got past 150 as Khan leaked 12 runs in the over.

McCatty struck a six over long on and Forde pulled a short delivery for four to the mid-wicket fence.

After McCatty and Forde brought up their 50-run partnership, Khan got the last laugh.

In the 39th over, Khan dismissed Forde and McCatty. Forde was out leg before for 25 and McCatty was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Ottley for 28.

CCC could only muster 33 runs in the last ten overs as the students were all out for 200 in exactly 50 overs.

Khan was the most successful bowler for Red Force grabbing 4/53 in ten overs. Hinds took 2/18 in seven overs, Mohammed snatched 2/19 in seven overs and Cariah bagged 2/37 in ten overs.

Openers Joshua Da Silva and Ottley got Red Force off to an entertaining start with attractive shots.

In the fourth over, fast bowler Michail Powell put down a sharp caught-and-bowled chance to give Ottley a life. In the same over, Ottley punished CCC, leaning into a full-pitched delivery which found the rope. Ottley struck two fours on the leg side before the over was complete as Red Force progressed to 25/0 after four overs.

One of the shots of the day was a late cut by Da Silva down to the third-man fence for four off spinner Romario Greaves.

Goodridge got the breakthrough as Da Silva was bowled for 22 off 34 balls attempting a huge hit.

Shortly after Mohammed joined Ottley the players left the field because of rain.

The Adventures of Reading*

Do you like to read? That’s wonderful if you do. If you don’t, that’s okay too. I hope you will be inspired to read with delight after reading this article.

I have a passport. It’s my official ID that allows me to travel around the Caribbean and to over 196 countries in the world.

Just as I can use my passport to get to New York,  Miami, England, Antigua or Jamaica so you can open a book and take off to enchanted regions of your imagination.

The world and its wonders are ready for you to touch and explore. Open a book and meet a riveting artist, grandparents on a green, leafy, colourfully rich farm, and a mother and daughter bonding through baking and sewing; discover volcanic or seismic eruptions in their horrying splendor, picture monkeys in your back yard eating mangoes and swinging in trees; meet a ginormous whale or a tiny creature on the ocean floor. Picture a mongoose fighting off a snake or a roster doing battle with a barking dog, all by turning the pages of a book!

The fun part is you don’t have to spend lots of money  to see and experience the amazing things around the world, just open a book, open your mind and use your imagination. You will be able to feel the hot, blazing sun of the Sahara Dessert in Africa or experience a close up view of Mars in an astronaut’s suit. You can even take your mind back to when the volcano erupted and see the lava flowing, cutting through the Earth and leaving it’s mark in the texture, colour and shape of Black Rocks in St. Kitts.

Close your eyes and imagine that your are climbing Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Can you see the summit? Can you feel your fingers numbing from the biting cold? How far up are you? Climb! Climb! Keep going…

Do you want to make reading more fun and rewarding? Here are three tips to enhance your reading experience:

*Make Words Come Alive*

*Read to Friends and Family* and

*Dive Deep*

Louise Baigelman, a lady who studied reading says that you can make words come alive when you read by changing out letters in words. Let us use man for example, change the n to a p what would get? What other letters can we swap out to get another word?

She also says that we can say tongue twisters like ‘Peter Piper picked a peck or pickled peppers’, to make reading fun. (Try it!)

The second thing you can do to make reading exciting is read to friends and family. Emilie Buchwald, an award-winning children’s author, once said “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” When  you read to friends and family you can ask questions about words or ideas that you don’t understand. This will help to build your vocabulary and  develop a desire or appetite to read more on your own. You also get a chance to express to your parents or friends your own ideas on topics and they will surely give you helpful feedback. You will form memories with your parents, family and friends by just reading a book, and those previous memories you can share with your children’s children.

The third thing you should explore when reading is to Dive Deep. Reading is a open door to learning. When you dive deep you must be curious and inquisitive to study the book, not just read it. Reflect on what you see while you are reading. Focus on characters in the story and ask questions such as what was the author thinking when choosing the story plot or the rhymes of a poem. You would also be able to tell someone what the book is about or what statements or ideas attract your attention the most. Look again! Now try to identify patterns to help you appreciate the structure and details of the book. The next time you pick up a book, a poem or an article even a devotional track,  remember to dive deep.

Do you know that as a little girl I loved to read? I read everything that I could get my hands on, even now that I am an adult, I still can’t wait to read in my spare time. This passion that I have for reading helped me to write my own book. It’s called *Screaming for Your Touch.* I am also writing three more books. Each and everyone of you can become an author just like me. It is tedious but creative work and you may not feel like writing some days but you just keep at it.

Read and apply yourself. Why? You will become masterful readers, exceptional thinkers and brilliant writers. Just open a book. Read it. Write your own spectacular ideas down! Before you know it I will be buying your finished book. What’s next? As an author, you will take other readers on a book tour of amazing adventures!

The soldier from Fyzabad charged in connection with the deadly heist outside Pennywise Plaza in La Romaine on September 19 has been denied bail.

On Monday, Ishmael Salaam, 24, made his first court appearance before senior magistrate Armina Deonarinesingh, who remanded him into custody to reappear on Tuesday.

In September, the police charged four men with various offences which stemmed from the same incident. They are set to reappear in court on Tuesday.

Attorney Criston J Williams represented the accused solider and Sgt Malloo prosecuted.

Over the weekend, the police charged Salaam with two counts of murder, one count of robbery with violence and two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The dead victims are co-workers Jeffrey Peters and Jerry Stuart of Allied Security Ltd. They were shot and killed while transporting money in a van out of Pennywise Plaza. A third co-worker, Peola Baptiste, was shot and wounded.

Two other people were also injured. The shooters fled in a car.

Shortly afterwards, during a shootout at Pond Street in La Romaine, the police killed four suspects. They were brothers Kyle Ramdhan, Keyon Ramdhan, Greg Dodough and Deaundre Montrose, all of Fyzabad.

The police also recovered the money, guns, bulletproof vests and other items.

The same day, the soldier, a member of the TT Regiment based at the La Romaine camp, reported that six men robbed him at gunpoint of his SUV. The men used the SUV as a getaway vehicle. The police had detained but released him without charge.

After the shootout, police arrested Christopher Noreiga, 24, and Brent Walcott, 23, both of Ballantyne Street, Five Rivers, Arouca. Noreiga and Walcott were later jointly charged with trafficking in guns and having ammunition.

Two other people, Rennico Khan, 32, of Midas Lane, Corinth Hill Extension, Ste Madeleine and Kemo Mc Sween, 26, of Union Hall, San Fernando, were also charged with having guns and ammunition.
