The Minister of Health reported that no case of rheumatic fever was discovered in schools, following vigorous testing of students.
However, utilizing the resources provided by the WHO, five hundred women have been tested for HPV, 25% of whom have tested positive.
Sufficient resources are remaining to test an additional 1,000 women and these tests will continue to be carried out until the resources are exhausted.
One of the outcomes of HPV is cervical cancer; this cancer can be eliminated by treatment if caught early.
A robust program of testing and treatment will be carried out by the Ministry of Health.

VANESSA Kussie, widow of diver Rishi Nagassar, said the start of the commission of enquiry (CoE) into the Paria tragedy has given her hope that the families who lost loved ones would finally get justice and closure.
With tears streaming down her face, Kussie told the Newsday at Paramount Building, San Fernando, on Wednesday, that nine months after the February 25 tragedy, the pain and trauma had not lessened.
She said neither she nor her children are coping well.
“I cry every day. My baby (their three-year old son) asks every day when his Daddy is coming home.”
She said it has been a double blow for her two older sons, who are from a previous marriage. Their father died, she said and Nagassar was the only father they had known for the past 13 years.
“They loved him and he loved them. It’s been hard.”
In an interview with the media after a news conference called by the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) to make a statement on the Paria tragedy, Kussie said the testimony of Christopher Boodram, the lone survivor, and the voices of her husband and his other colleagues – Fyzal Kurban, Kazim Ali Jr and Yusuf Henry – had made her relive the pain.
“These past couple of days, it has been sad to see the actual footage of them diving in the water, and on Tuesday, to hear Christopher’s testimony.”
She and members of the Kurban family went to Tuesday’s hearing to support Boodram, who broke down several times while giving testimony, as he felt he had failed them by surviving.
“His testimony was sad and touching at the same time. It hurt to hear and experience everything that took place inside the pipeline. They were in there for a long period.”
She said nothing was done to save them, “and that is the part that is hurting us the most.”
She said her husband was unconscious and was given oxygen, and hence survived longer than the others. He was also the last to be taken out, four days after the incident. She said his body, which she identified at the Forensic Sciences Centre, was in a better state than the other divers.
The divers were sucked into a 30-inch Paria Fuel Trading Co Ltd underwater crude oil pipeline, Pointe-a-Pierre, on February 25. Boodram was the lone survivor.
The men worked for LMCS Ltd, owned by Kazim Ali Snr, which was contracted by Paria to do maintenance work on the pipeline.
The CoE into what caused the mishap started on Monday with Jerome Lynch, KC, at the helm. The team visited the hyperbaric chamber in which the men were trapped on Wednesday.
The enquiry will continue on Thursday.

Un sommet sur le commerce international des espèces menacées va décider jeudi s’il ratifie une initiative “historique” pour protéger les requins, qui donnerait un sérieux coup de frein au lucratif négoce de leurs ailerons.
Cette question a été l’une des plus discutées à la 19e Conférence des parties (COP19) de la CITES, la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées, qui rassemble 183 pays et l’Union européenne.
Le sommet, débuté le 14 novembre et qui s’achève vendredi, pourrait faire entrer des dizaines d’espèces de requins requiem (Carcharhinidae) et de requins-marteaux (Sphynidae) dans l’Annexe II de la Convention limitant strictement le commerce de certaines espèces. Une initiative soutenue par l’Union européenne et une quinzaine de pays, dont le Panama hôte du sommet.
Il s’agit d’espèces qui ne sont pas encore menacées d’extinction mais pourraient le devenir si leur commerce n’était pas étroitement contrôlé. L’Annexe I, elle, interdit complètement le commerce de certaines espèces.
Si la réunion plénière de jeudi donne son feu vert, “il s’agira d’une décision historique car pour la première fois la CITES prendrait position sur un très grand nombre d’espèces de requins qui représentent approximativement 90% du marché”, a déclaré à l’AFP la déléguée panaméenne Shirley Binder.
Le marché des ailerons de requin dépasse les 500 millions de dollars par an (483 millions d’euros). Ils peuvent se vendre 1.000 dollars le kilo en Asie de l’Est pour confectionner des soupes très réputées.
Avant le vote prévu, un intense débat s’était déroulé trois heures durant, le 17 novembre, au sein d’un comité de la conférence, le Japon et le Pérou proposant d’exclure certaines espèces des mesures de protection –une mesure rejetée à bulletins secrets avant l’approbation des propositions pour renforcer les protection des requins requiem et requins-marteaux.
“Nous espérons que tout soit adopté en plénière”, observe Mme Binder.
La plénière doit également voter sur la ratification d’une proposition sur la protection de la raie guitare.
Pendant les discussions du comité, plusieurs délégations dont celle du Panama avaient disposé sur leurs tables des requins en peluche, devenus ensuite une sorte de symbole du sommet.
Des délégués et responsables d’organisations de protection de la nature, observatrices au sommet, se sont montrés confiant dans l’adoption en plénière des résolutions.
“Nous espérons que rien d’extraordinaire n’arrive et que l’intégralité de ces familles de requins soit incluses dans l’Annexe II”, a déclaré à l’AFP le délégué chilien Ricardo Saez.
Si les trois propositions sur les requins requiem, requins-marteaux et raies-guitares sont votées, “nous passerions d’un contrôle sur 25% environ du commerce d’ailerons de requins à plus de 90%”, avait expliqué à l’AFP au début du sommet Ilaria Di Silvestre, responsable des campagnes européennes pour le Fonds international pour la protection des animaux (IFAW).
“Nous sommes au milieu d’une très grande crise d’extinction des requins”, le “deuxième groupe de vertébrés le plus menacé de la planète”, avait alors souligné de son côté Luke Warwick, de la Wildlife Conservation Society.
Au total, les participants au sommet ont étudié 52 propositions pour modifier les niveaux de protection de certaines espèces.
La CITES, en vigueur depuis 1975, fixe les règles du commerce international pour plus de 36.000 espèces sauvages, allant de la délivrance de permis (plus d’un million de transactions autorisées par an) jusqu’à l’interdiction totale.
Organisé tous les deux ou trois ans, le sommet s’est déroulé cette année dans l’ombre et sous l’influence de deux autres conférences de l’ONU, elles-aussi cruciales pour l’avenir des êtres vivants sur la planète: la COP27 sur le climat qui s’est achevée dimanche en Egypte et la COP15 sur la sauvegarde de la biodiversité en décembre à Montréal.
En 2019 à Genève, la CITES avait renforcé la protection des girafes, quasi prohibé l’achat d’éléphants par les zoos, maintenu l’interdiction à l’Afrique australe de vendre ses stocks d’ivoire, et inscrit 18 requins à son Annexe II, celles des espèces dont le commerce est strictement limité.
