Spirit of selfishness spreading across the island -Police commissioner Loop Jamaica

Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson says the many discussions that are taking place regarding individual rights across the country, though well intended, it is triggering a spirit of selfishness and also triggering a ripple effect on how well citizens of the country come together to tackle many of the ills in society.

The commissioner said on a daily basis even members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) can be seen placing their lives on the line, focusing more on the collective, for people who they don’t even know, because of the decision that they made that their own personal safety is not as important as that of the community.

The commissioner said unfortunately this sort of approach was not widespread among many citizens, who were more focused on themselves than the collective.

“There are a lot of discussions now about rights or individual rights that well-intentioned as they are, they have driven us somewhat into an idea of selfishness, because by its very definition, ‘individual’ and ‘mine’ – those are words that are associated with a particular approach to things,” declared Anderson.

He was speaking at the National Neighbourhood Watch Church service held at the Andrew’s Memorial Church Service on Saturday.

According to Anderson, the police can be seen leading by example, sacrificing their own individual rights, and have instead focused on the rights of others by serving in various communities.

However, he said with the focus now on individuality in society, has created a “spirit of selfishness”.

“When we start to talk about a collective, and we start to talk about our responsibility, largely that focus is outwards, and our responsibilities are for others.

“… And I think that well-intentioned discussion sometimes leads to people doing selfish acts. I need to make a living so I have to inconvenience everybody to make that living, and you see it reflected in many ways in the society because it is my right to make a living, never mind what responsibility comes with that right,” the commissioner explained.

He said that many people do not stop to assess the responsibilities that come with the right of making a living.

He said members of the Neighborhood Watch movement have made similar steps to focus on their responsibility to others rather than themselves.

The commissioner said young people must take a similar stance and “focus more on what you can do for others, and what needs to be done for you will be taken care of.”.

“It’s a different approach, but it’s an approach that will take care of most of these interpersonal issues,” said the commissioner.

“They (young persons) largely reach where they want to reach because of selfishness. That’s at the… route of it, and this idea that they have a right to something could be deadly… over their responsibility to the wider community,” Anderson argued.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Martinique FranceAntilles

Nurses make history at UWI Cave Hill Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Twenty nurses have created history as the first cohort of graduates from The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programme.

Newly appointed Minister of Health and Wellness, Senator Dr The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, lauded the nurses’ determination during a Pinning and Recognition ceremony on Friday at The UWI.

Six of the nurses graduated from the Master of Science in Nursing programme, and 14 with distinctions, from the Post Graduate Diploma in Paediatric Nursing.

“Amazingly, these nurses have all successfully completed their various programmes while we were experiencing the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic. So, this afternoon, the theme ‘Excellence in Nursing’ aptly recognises the hard work and determination of these graduates to successfully complete their studies in the midst of personal and professional challenges associated with this pandemic, where many of them continued to serve as frontline workers, while seeking to meet their various programme assignments and objectives,” Minister Walcott pointed out.

The graduates are all registered nurses who come from a range of institutions, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Geriatric and District Hospitals, polyclinics and the Barbados Community College.

Dr Walcott added that human resources development was high on the Ministry’s agenda, and Government was committed to the training of nurses “in post-basic specialities, as we continually seek to strengthen the delivery of health care services in our island”.

To this end, the Health Minister emphasised the importance of cultivating a partnership between The UWI and the Ministry with the common mission of pursuing nursing excellence.

The Master of Science in Nursing, with specialisations in Education and Administration, was introduced in 2018. Prior to this, The UWI, Cave Hill, did not have undergraduate or postgraduate courses in nursing like its sister campuses UWI Mona and St. Augustine.

Additionally, in 2020, Government and the Hospital for Sick Kids in Canada, established a seven-year partnership to positively impact the health and well-being of children in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean called the Shaw Centre for Paediatric Excellence. It is through this partnership that the Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Nursing was implemented.

Minister Walcott said the Ministry of Health and Wellness also continued to work with the Barbados Community College and its nursing programme.

“We are making sure that nursing education receives the necessary attention as we are heartened to know that the pass rate [at the BCC] has improved from a low of 40 per cent four to five years ago, to now about 70 per cent passes for the past two to three years. [This is] testimony to the hard work of the tutors as well as programmes to support individual mentorship and coaching,” he underscored.

Stating that this first cohort of nurses would lead the way in making Barbados a centre for paediatric excellence in the region, the Health Minister expressed his gratitude for their unwavering commitment.

“Graduates, your dedication and commitment to higher learning has not gone unnoticed, and I am happy to celebrate everyone of you for going above and beyond the call of duty to achieve excellence, not only in your responsibilities but in the attainment of higher education,” he stressed.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

Chef on trial for allegedly raping colleague

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Newsco: The trial of a chef accused of rape began yesterday before Justice Ann-Marie Smith in the High Court.

The prosecution is of the belief that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with a dishwasher who was catering, alongside him, for a private Christmas Eve party at a villa in 2020.

The victim reportedly met the defendant a week prior to the incident which allegedly took place on Christmas Day.

While working at the private event the day prior, the complainant reportedly had a drink to commemorate her upcoming 17th birthday.

She reportedly missed the work bus and decided to stay at the villa. Having been acquainted with the defendant, she asked him to stay with her to avoid being there alone.

The two reportedly shared a room, and had a few laughs before going to sleep in separate beds.

Some time later the complainant allegedly awoke to find the defendant on top of her, her clothes were undone and she also felt pain in her privates.

The trial, which began yesterday with a jury of nine, saw only one witness testifying — the police photographer.

He showed the court images he took on the afternoon of the alleged crime.

They included pictures of the two disheveled beds, a stain on one of the beds, and clothing in different parts of the room.

The trial will continue on Monday.

The accused is represented by Attorney Wendel Robinson.
