Martin is the seventh named hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic Season.

Tropical Storm Martin has intensified to become a category one hurricane.

The storm, which is located over the central north Atlantic, is the seventh hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic Season.

As of 11 am EDT today, the US National Hurricane Centre said Martin was located 2,060 miles to the west of the Azores, an island chain located west of Portugal, and it was moving east-northeastward at 26 mph (43 km/h).

Hurricane Martin’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h).

“Martin should get larger and stronger through tomorrow, gradually lose strength from Thursday through the weekend, but remain a very large cyclone,” NHC said.

Cari-Med considers going public Loop Jamaica

Distributor Cari-Med Group Limited may soon be listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE). The company has retained NCB Capital Markets and law firm MH&CO., as professional advisors as it contemplates an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The IPO is among other financial options being considered as it continues its expansion and growth plans.

Though steering clear of making any pronouncements on what the possible funds raised would be used for by the company, Chairman of Cari-Med, Dr Glen Christian told Loop News that the principals of the company are exploring several “thoughts” amid the continued consolidation plans.

“We are not there yet. We don’t have a timeline or amount [that they would be looking to raise],” Christian, who is also Cari-Med’s Group CEO, said.

“We are growing and expanding,” he said noting the new 258,000-square-foot distribution facility built on lands along Salt Pond Road in Bernard Lodge, St Catherine.

Cari-Med has already begun operating out of the new facility for which ground was broken in October 2019, under a more than $6 billion investment.

With the first phase of the facility complete, Christian said “phase two will come into place because our growth will require it.”

The facility will house the warehouses and administrative offices of the entity’s Consumer Goods Division.

“We invest for growth and when you consolidate you get efficiency,” he said.

The company is also mindful “…of the fact that any IPO and listing on the JSE would be subject to the approval, or non-objection of, the relevant regulators,” it said in a media release.

Cari-Med is a leading pharmaceutical distributor in the Caribbean as well as one of the pre-eminent distributors in the fast-moving consumer goods sector.

Former banker Everett Christian remains concerned about the National Asset Management Company’s continued lack of accountability.

The company, better known as NAMCO, was set up by the Browne Administration as a holding company for profits earned by other entities in which the Government and people have a share.

However, since its coming into being, very little about the entity has been made public – particularly its finances. No audited accounts have been presented to the Parliament, to date, in spite of calls by concerned citizens and members of the Opposition parties.

This state of affairs is the cause of Christian’s concern.

NAMCO simply creates another layer of bureaucracy, Christian points out – since, previously, profits from the various entities could be transferred directly to the Consolidated Fund.

Meanwhile, he says that, by law, the company should produce audited financial statements, and these should be submitted to the Minister responsible for NAMCO to be laid before the Parliament.

He adds that the people of Antigua and Barbuda should have access to these financial records, which would shed some light on the status of the funds NAMCO receives.

Christian believes, therefore, that the Administration is in breach of the Finance Administration Act – not just with regard to NAMCO, but to several of the statutory organizations.

Meanwhile – like United Progressive Party Political Leader Harold Lovell – Christian is rubbishing claims by Prime Minister Gaston Browne that there would be significant job losses if the company were to be suspended, audited and dissolved, as the UPP has promised to do, if elected. – REAL NEWS

AUA student involved in accident dies

CRITICALLY INJURED AUA STUDENT DIES

One of two medical students left critically injured in a road accident on October 23 has died.

Kenneth Mathew, 21, passed away this morning at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

The AUA student’s parents had been in the process of trying to fly him to India for specialist medical care.

Mathew and 19-year-old Priyanjana Das were struck while attempting to cross Friars Hill Road.

Karim Edwards, 45, who apparently initially fled the scene before later handing himself in to police, was charged with dangerous driving last week. Those charges are likely to now be upgraded.

Das, who had her right arm amputated due to injuries sustained in the incident, remains in the hospital’s ICU.

Laventille man shot dead in bed

Police are probing the murder of a 37-year-old Laventille man on Tuesday.

Police said officers of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) received information that a body had been found on St John Street, Laventille, at around 6.45 pm.

They went to a house and found O’Neil Nicholas’s body on a bed with several gunshot wounds.

Police from the Central Police Station and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I visited with a district medical officer, who declared Nicholas dead.

Crime scene investigators found several spent 5.56 mm shells at the scene.

No motive has been established for the murder.

Online applications for legal certificates to begin December 1

Within just one month, persons in Guyana and the diaspora will have easier access to services provided by the Guyana Register Office (GRO), most notably, its improved online application process.

The move aligns with the organisation’s current efforts to modernise its services in a way that makes processes easier for Guyanese.

Registrar General of GRO, Raymond Cummings, said persons will be able to access the GRO’s improved services from December 1, 2022.

He said while persons can now apply with forms at their nearest post office, the online application process will make it much easier for them to register, especially those in the diaspora.

“Now we are adding another option because we understand that we are in a changing world and that with technological advancement, more persons are depending on technology. So, from the first of December, we are opening the option of online applications,” he said.

Although the option of online registration is already available, the option to make payments from the GRO’s existing portals is not. Cummings expressed his hope that this would be remedied by December 1.

“So, what we’re doing is we are in the process of working out with GTT the process to apply using MMG. They will be paying using MMG so you will no longer have to apply through one of our ports and then come to pay, or when you pick up you have to pay. You won’t even have to pick it up. You can apply online using the same sites that we have online… you can go to the Ministry of Home Affairs website and look for the GRO page, and there’s a form there, where you can apply,” he said.

Persons can also register via WhatsApp, by messaging 610-9394, or by sending messages to the GRO through its Instagram and Facebook pages.

MoneyGram payments are currently supported by the GRO as well.

Once the applications are processed, they will be mailed back to the applicant.

On Thursday, October 27, 2022, about 3:30 a.m. several units of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force conducted an operation, at Wilton’s Yard, Castries, following increases in Robberies and Firearm related offences within the Northern Sector of the island.

During the operation, officers recovered six (6) stolen cellular phones, suspected to be connected with a recent Robbery at Micro Lab, on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Along with the devices, officers seized ski masks, hoodies and four (4) rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Consequently, Shaquan Williams of Morne Du Don, Thomika Alfred of Ciceron, a fourteen (14) year old resident of Morne Du Don and a seventeen (17) year old resident of Bagatelle, were arrested and charged with several counts of Handling Stolen Goods and Possession of Ammunition.

Shaquan Williams and Thomika Alfred were charged for the said offences and each bailed in the sum of $15,000.00 cash or suitable surety, and are to reappear before the First District Court on November 26, 2022. The juveniles were remanded at the Boys Training Centre for future case management.

Sacha Stephen of Morne Du Don, Castries was also arrested in connection with causing disruptions during the conduct of the operation.

She was charged with Disorderly Behaviour and Insulting Words, and was bailed on her own recognizance.

The matter was adjourned to January 12, 2023.

Barbadian Olympian, Freida Nicholls is elated to follow in the footsteps of her mother, Edna Nicholls.

Freida was sworn in on Monday, October 31 as a Justice of Peace (JP) by President Dame Sandra Mason at State House. Reflecting that she was honoured to receive the recommendation, Freida shared that she humbly wanted to serve the people of Barbados, much like her mother, the founder of the Edna Nicholls Centre which helps at-risk youth.

“It is an honour. There is a lot of work that a JP is involved with in terms of authentication and other areas. I am personally glad because my mother Edna Nicholls was a JP as well and it gives me an opportunity again to reconnect with the community, to serve,” she told local media.

Freida is Barbados’ first female sprinter to go the Olympics, and she currently is an executive committee member in the World Olympian Association. She served in the Amateur Athletics Association of Barbados for 32 years as secretary, public relations officer and vice-president. Additionally, her historic achievements were recognised in February this year at the National Primary Schools Athletic Championships (NAPSAC), where a zone was named after her.

The Queen’s College alumnus expressed that under her new role as JP, she will “render assistance where required”.

It has been suggested that the new Constitution of Barbados explore expanding the tenure and powers of the President.

The recommendation came from attorney-at-law and former leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Verla De Peiza on Sunday, October 30 at a public meeting with the Constitutional Reform Commission at The Alexandra School.

While lauding the President’s visits to centenarians as a “nice” initiative, De Peiza contended that the President should be more than a figurehead but have “an active role”. She proposed that the Reform Commission examine France’s model where the President is the constitutional head of state with executive powers.

“Let’s face it, I don’t think it would ever be the intention of the Barbadian public to simply replace one figurehead with another so I would like us to move from a point where we are also speaking to a president who has an executive function and it is not just a functionary. I don’t think we need it in a society this small and I don’t think it is really a promotion of democracy to have a figurehead as a head of state,” De Peiza emphasised.

“We need someone who is doing more – even though it is nice – than visiting our centenarians….but there must be some actual duties for our president,” she added.

De Peiza also proposed that the President’s tenure be extended from four years to seven years. She indicated that the four-year term coincided with the parliamentary term and did no justice to accurately enforcing democracy.

“We put a president in place and gave her a term that really and truly does not do justice to our democracy because the term of four years is way too close to our political term and if there is one thing we should do in our Constitution is to insulate our head of state from political interference.

“It is not a new idea but it is one that I want the constitution to take on board and consider a term of seven years instead, that does not collide immediately with a five-year parliamentary term but it allows a president to not only seem to be independent but to actually be independent of mind,” she held.
