Fish, salmon, octopi, crabs, lobster, shrimp, and other seafood mix platters were up for grabs at the 2022 staging of the annual Sharkies Seafood Festival in Runaway Bay, St Ann.

Sharkies Seafood Principal and director of the eatery’s festivals Alwyn Brown shared in an interview that he is pleased with the turnout and feedback received from patrons.

“The feedback is great…the quality of the event and the quality of the production increased, and we got more patrons than events held in previous years,” Brown said.

Though in its sixth staging, the mandate to promote delectable local seafood, served with a side of entertainment still completes the offerings. Support from Campari tipped the scales on this year’s total package.

Patrons witnessed performances from Imeru Tafari, Kranium, Jah Vinci, Jahshii, Chronic Law, Laa Lee, Bugle, Louie Culture, Zamunda, D’Yani, Moyann, Slippery Skeemaz, Deep Jahi, Twins of Twins and Rhumba.

Loop Lens harkens back to the fest with these highlights.

LETTER: How Can Anyone in Antigua Survive on a Little Over $1300 per month?

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

DEAR EDITOR:

How can anyone in Antigua survive on a little over $1300 per month?

Where can these people afford to live? In some dilapidated house in the ghetto.

These people can never dream of owning their own homes.

Now talking about run down homes, Gaston has habitually gone on his radio station and talk about landlords who won’t maintain their properties in the ghettos.

He is a major landlord and should know what it costs to maintain properties.

He is not renting to minimum wage earners who don’t take care of his properties and sometimes can’t pay the rent.

I will say to Gaston, he should ensure people get a decent wage so they can move out of the ghettos and get their own homes.

Or better yet, the government can build or provide low interest financing to individuals to build rent geared to income properties, like they do in other countries for poor people.

Gaston May also consider renting some of his properties to poor people instead of always talking about overseas individuals living with their manicured lawns and not maintaining their properties in Antigua.

Does he realize some of these people work two and three jobs to get what they have?

When people work for a whole week and can’t afford to buy food and pay for decent accommodations, it is the government’s problem.

The government should pay and private companies should pay its employees a living wage. Some of these employers are living in their multimillion dollar mansions while their employees can’t feed themselves.

Where are the investors Gaston is to bring into Antigua so Antiguans can find work outside of the public service.

The government can’t afford to pay all these people a decent wage. All Antigua gets are the Marvelous Mikes, Yida, Wiez and the land carpetbaggers in Barbuda.

Just yesterday, it was announced that Barbados and Guyana along with a couple African countries were developing a pharmaceutical company in Barbados.

Think of the high paying jobs and transfer of technology this will bring to Barbados.

Antigua is going nowhere and a lot of people are destined to live in poverty because no credible investor will engage our leaders, who always want a piece of the pie, to create good paying jobs in Antigua.

How does St. Kitts manage to set up a special fund from their CIP money so that they can pay bonuses to their people when all Antigua government can set up is more debt on the people’s back.

All them labour supporters can continue braying like jackasses while Antigua goes from bad to worst.

LETTER: Person of Interest

Black Immigrant Daily News

ABLP Leader Gaston Browne

Dear Editor,

Dear Honorable Gaston Brown, it’s my esteemed pleasure to write this letter.

I’m really grateful for seeing how you care for our fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters by extending amnesty so that illegal immigrants could become regularized.

Over the years, we realized that our nation began to be diverse in culture, whereas to date, you can see us integrating with other Caribbean countries’ traditions. which plays a major role in letting our children know about our ancestors and see that we are all one.

Now it’s boiling down to election time, and I know the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) will take home all seats because there is no government that can lead us to greener pastures.

The United Progressive Party has shown much hatred toward non-nationals, and it’s evident because one of their own is married to a Jamaican, and they made a complete mockery of him on a radio program.

As I can recall, the UPP government mistreated our Caricom brothers and sisters as they mention, “Three years you live in a country and you are allowed to vote.”

In that year, the UPP government spiked a mass deportation and used the 2004 Act to block legal residents from obtaining citizenship.

We were born in Antigua and Barbuda, or some set of hypocrites, because some of us are citizens or green card holders of the United States, Canada, and England, or we fly there to have our children.

So that’s why we have a problem when someone else resides in our country? If you don’t know, foreigners play a major role in our economy;

without the taxes from work permits and, by extension, any other tax they have to pay, our country would not be able to stay afloat.

To be honest, most of the jobs that we, the people of Antigua and Barbuda, refuse non-nationals, do so with pride and dignity.

If you take a look at our Caribbean Community countries like Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, and Montserrat, just to name a few, all these countries are democratic nations and part of the Commonwealth.

It’s time we, the people of Antigua and Barbuda, and legal residents stood together to put a complete stop to the opposition party. and believe that once you are in the process of becoming a permanent resident, you should have a voice in our political affairs.

If the constitution isn’t amended, I’m planning on submitting a private member’s bill so it could be debated in parliament.

I pray long life over you, Uncle Gassy, as you continue to push forward for the people of Antigua and Barbuda and its residents.

Slutty Vegan CEO talks new cookbook, plans to go global Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

In the past few years, Slutty Vegan, an Atlanta-based eatery, has attracted a cult-like following with its raunchy approach to veganism.

Celebrities often pop in for a visit. And customers routinely wait through long lines to order from the chain’s cheekily-named menu, which includes the One Night Stand burger and the slutty fries.

Owner Pinky Cole opened up the first brick-and-mortar location in 2018 in Atlanta, where the acclaimed burger joint attracted a largely Black customer base.

Since then, Cole has added new locations in other parts of Georgia as well as Birmingham, Alabama, and Brooklyn, New York.

This month, she will begin a five-city tour to promote her new cookbook, Eat Plants, B(asterisk)tch: 91 Vegan Recipes That Will Blow Your Meat-Loving Mind.

The Associated Press recently spoke with Cole about her business, her new cookbook, and how she’s preparing for a potential economic downturn. The conversation has been edited for clarity and length.

Pinky Cole, owner of Slutty Vegan restaurants and food trucks, wipes down a sign on her storefront in Atlanta. Q:How did you start your business? And why did you decide to go with a raunchy name?

A: So I started my concept in my two-bedroom apartment while working full-time as a casting director. The idea hit me out of nowhere. I didn’t know a side hustle would turn into a $100 million brand. I thought I was doing something personally for myself. But I was really doing something for people who want to reimagine food in a different way. The name was a catchy way to get people to pay attention. I knew ‘slutty’ and ‘vegan’ didn’t go together. They’re so oddly different that if you put them together, it would make people ask questions.

Q: Speaking of your prior career, how did you transition your broadcast skills to the restaurant business?

A: I know what people pay attention to. I know what gets them bored. I know what gets them to tune in. I learned that working in TV as a producer for the Maury show. I also worked on more therapeutic shows, so I know what pulls on people’s emotions. Our marketing is racy, raunchy, and in-your-face. I’m just producing TV every day.

Q: The chain limits customers to two burgers per order. Have you dealt with any complaints regarding that?

A: No. It’s funny. People don’t even complain about standing in line. We do the limit because there’s something in the art of scarcity that people have fallen in love with. If you make it available to them sometimes, but not all the time, it’ll make them come back. Another reason we implemented the limit was that we want to make sure the experience was efficient for customers. We’re still a small business. So the policy might change in the future as we grow.

Q: Many are worried that we might have a recession soon. Are you preparing your business for one?

A: Yes, we are actually in the process of doing that now. You know, it’s a very scary thing. Even for somebody who just raised $25 million, you’d be surprised how fast you can lose it if you’re not conscious about how you spend the money. We are strategically coming up with a game plan. Once upon a time, we were just focused on brick-and-mortar locations. But it takes almost $1 million to build one brick-and-mortar site. Now we are focusing our energy on buying food trucks.

Q: Do you have plans to go global?

A: We’ve already gotten some trademarks internationally. So we are preparing. But I can’t say just yet what we’re preparing for.

Q: Who’s the audience for the new cookbook?

A: This is for the meat eater. The vegans already got it figured out. No limitations – really good food. It just happens to be plant-based.
