Castries Mayor Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel has called on the local private sector to invest in security cameras to help in the battle against crime.

“If I had anything to say to the private sector, I would tell them that they have to invest in cameras and surveillance equipment,” the Major told St Lucia Times.

“It must be done because it is the only way that we can capture the information that we need and monitor the City on a twenty-four hour basis,” Landor-Gabriel stated.

She indicated that the battle against crime is not the sole responsibility of the police.

And regarding investing in surveillance equipment, the Major asserted that the expense would be lower than the loss incurred due to a break-in.

“Sometimes damage to a door is much more costly than what it takes to install a camera. In fact we have been speaking to our vendors about investing in small cameras on their facilities,” Lendor-Gabriel disclosed.

She made the remarks while acknowledging a gift of nine bulletproof vests from Blue Waters St. Lucia Ltd to the City Police.

The Mayor said the Castries Constituency Council (CCC) was reaching out to the local private sector to partner in making the Saint Lucia capital a safer place.

Dominican Republic Cashes In On Gambling Tax Revenue

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Sept. 9, 2022: The Dominican Republic is reaping the rewards of the gambling industry on the island, which is being driven in part by the high levels of tourists visiting the country.

In 2019, the tax revenue from gambling in the Dominican Republic reached 1.27 billion Dominican pesos (almost $23 million). This makes the Pearl of the Antilles a major player in the gambling industry of the Caribbean.

With land-based casinos located in popular coastal areas, such as the Hotel Casino Niza in Las Terrenas, the Casino Dominic Capo Cana in Punta Cana, and countless casinos in Santo Domingo, including Princess Casino, Casino Mirage, and Casino Napolitano, the gambling industry is one sector benefiting from the influx of tourists.

A Hidden Gem

This phenomenon is exemplified by the town of Las Terrenas, rated by many as a hidden gem, which boasts beaches such as the Playa Bonita, ideal for surfing and snorkeling, along with the picture postcard beauty of the Salto Del Limón waterfall. These are just a couple of the sights which tourists are rewarded with after taking the two-and-a-half-hour bus journey from Santo Domingo.

Tourism remains the main generator of income for the country, creating $7.4 billion in revenue in 2019, with tourist numbers on the rise in 2022, which is a reliable measure of the overall health of the economy, with S&P Global highlighting the sector as being responsible for the “impressive economic recovery” in the country. The Dominican Republic also raised approximately five billion Dominican pesos from tax on exit and entry fees for tourists in 2020. While the tourism sector is responsible for 8.4% of the economy, it has been argued by the Ministry of Tourism that related services, which include casino hotels, suggest the number is nearer 30%.

The Dominican Republic remains the pacesetter for the casino industry in the Caribbean. The country is able to take advantage of the high levels of tourism to create unobtrusive casino hotels, which, along with income from tourists, are making a significant contribution to the tax revenue of the country.

Le Lycée Shcoelcher, après 1902

Après l’éruption de la montagne Pelée le 8 mai 1902, un arrêté local du 15 septembre 1902 décide le transfert à Fort-de-France du Lycée Schoelcher, dans les locaux de l’Externat colonial qui se trouvent à la Caserne Bouillé. La nécessité va se faire de plus en plus sentir d’avoir de nouveaux locaux pour faire travailler les lycéens dans de meilleures conditions. Le 28 avril 1916, paraît un arrêté instituant une commission chargée de rechercher les moyens d’installer définitivement le Lycée Schœlcher. En 1937, après bien des atermoiements, le lycée que nous avons connu avant les nouveaux bâtiments de cette rentrée 2022, ouvrait enfin ses portes.

« Quant à nos enfants, à ces petits nègres et à ces petits mulâtres, ils auront l’enseignement congréganiste à leur disposition, ou alors, ils retourneront conduire les mules sur les grandes propriétés, besogne pour laquelle, ils ont été créés et mis au monde, n’est-ce pas ? (…) ».

Caribbean still on alert as new systems appear off coast of Africa Loop Cayman Islands

More bad weather is making its way off the coast of Africa today.

The first one is about 1,000 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is causing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity.

While it moves west-northwestward across the central subtropical Atlantic, it may turn into a tropical storm.

However, there is only a 30 per cent chance of this happening over the next five days.

In the event that it forms into a tropical storm next week, the expectation is that it may be a short-lived tropical storm.

A second system is in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, where a tropical wave is located several hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands.

This is also producing a disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms.

Predictions are that this will move westward or west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic through the middle of next week.

The chance of formation through the next five days is low, at 20 per cent.

Finally, another tropical wave is forecasted to move off the coast of Africa by early next week.

The National Hurricane Center expects this to move westward, over the far eastern Atlantic.

If any of these systems do develop further, the next named Atlantic storm will be Fiona. Gaston, Hermine, Ian and Julia may follow.
