Children to learn about dangers of human trafficking Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The Ministry of National Security is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Youth to inform children about human trafficking.

Director of Children and Family Programmes at the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA), Warren Thompson, said the initiative was necessary, as children are vulnerable to human trafficking.

“There is the inclusion of the trafficking in persons content in the Home Family Life Education curriculum in schools, where we want children and teachers to be sensitive and have an awareness to the issue,” Thompson said.

He continued, “they have an internal committee and a plan of action, aimed at basically doing some preventative work in schools across the island, so a number of things are happening in the education sector”.

Manager of the Trafficking in Persons Secretariat in the Ministry of National Security, Audrey Budhi, said following the creation of Anti-Trafficking in Persons (ATIP) clubs in schools in 2019, the National Taskforce Against Trafficking in Persons had further dialogue on engagement.

“What the team did, coming out of the intentional work from the task force, they have…[from] grades seven to nine…developed the curriculum and that curriculum is used at that level outside of what we were talking about with the clubs.” Ms. Budhi said.

She noted that school guidance counsellors were trained on how to spot trafficking victims. “They (Education Ministry) used the time wisely during the pandemic, where you couldn’t go out, and what they have done creatively, as well, is whilst we were teaching the youngsters on television, we inserted those lessons [about trafficking] so that they were still learning and hearing about trafficking in persons.” Ms. Budhi noted.

She noted that the Ministry plans to re-engage the ATIP clubs.

“Those are what we’re seeing now as leadership, and that they can hand off and you can have that rippling effect. Their grouping has come up with their own subcommittee to deal with prevention and terms of reference in terms of how they’re going to deal with prevention issues, to meet the needs of their public.” Ms. Budhi said.

Senator Joseph asks Sir Molwyn to ensure that uncollected garbage is removed from a Bendals neighbourhood

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Senator Johnathan Joseph is calling on Minister of Health Sir Molwyn Joseph, yet again, to intervene and make sure that the garbage in his constituency is collected in a timely manner.

Sir Molwyn is the Minister responsible for the collection of waste across the country.

Senator Joseph, the United Progressive Party (UPP) Candidate for St. Mary’s North, reports that he has been receiving calls and WhatsApp messages from residents of the St. Thomas area in Bendals whose garbage has been uncollected for the past two weeks.

He says the situation appears to be so dire that even his wife has been receiving messages about the situation.

Personally, Joseph says, he has not seen the condition of the area, but he intends to visit the community as soon as he is able.

The UPP Candidate says he plans to assist the residents however he can if the garbage remains uncollected this week.

In March this year, residents of Harmony Drive in Cashew Hill found themselves in a similar situation, with garbage having been uncollected for several weeks and, in some instances, for a month.

The residents complained of the unsightly and unhealthy situation, which Senator Joseph agreed had become a health hazard.

Accordingly, he promised to remove the garbage if Sir Molwyn and the National Solid Waste Management Authority did not respond to his request for action in this regard.

And since the relevant authorities failed to do so, on April 1, the UPP Candidate fulfilled his promise to the constituents.

He secured the services of a private garbage truck and he, along with constituents, went out collecting the waste.

He was commended highly for his efforts by residents across the country while the Solid Waste Authority chided him for what it deemed to be an interruption to its schedule.

$43m spent on Johnson Smith’s failed Commonwealth post bid, Summit Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The Jamaican Government spent a combined $43 million on the failed campaign by Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, to wrest the Commonwealth Secretary General position away from Baroness Patricia Scotland, and for its delegation that attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Kigali, Rwanda in June.

A total of $18.2 million was spent on the Johnson Smith campaign that started with the surprise announcement of her candidature by Jamaica House in April. Approximately $25 million was spent on the delegation, which included Prime Minister Andrew Holness and his wife Juliet, that attended the week-long Summit at which the incumbent, the Dominica-born Scotland, narrowly defeated Johnson Smith to retain her position as Commonwealth Secretary General.

The cost of the campaign and the trip to the east-central African nation was revealed in a statement on Sunday by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

According to the statement, the $18.2 million that was expended on the Johnson Smith campaign covered air and ground transportation, COVID-19 tests, meals and accommodation, public relations/communications support activities for staging of events such as the launch and engagements with delegations as well as IT support, printing of documents, photography, food, and beverages.

Regarding the $25 million that was spent by the government for its delegation to attend the Summit, OPM explained that the cost was absorbed by three participating ministries, with the OPM being responsible for $12.8 million of the amount. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade forked up $7.7 million, while the Ministry of Tourism contributed $5.1 million.

The statement also confirmed that global marketing agency, FINN Partners provided public relations, media relations and thought leadership services for Johnson Smith.

“The government of Jamaica was not a party to this arrangement, which was secured by corporate Jamaica,” the statement added.

The Prime Minister was expected to answer questions in the Parliament related to the cost of the campaign, including whether a foreign-based public relations entity was involved and the source of the funding.

In providing the answers Sunday night, the OPM said it was “fulfilling its public commitment to transparency and accountability”.

The OPM asserted that Johnson Smith’s campaign was efficiently conducted and utilised the existing channels and resources, including already established travel plans and engagements.

“This significantly minimised additional and direct expenditure from the budget for the campaign,” it insisted.

The prime minister’s office highlighted that Johnson Smith’s candidature was announced in April and launched that same month in London, with some assistance for this event from corporate Jamaica.

Said the OPM: “The Minister made strategic use of the opportunities offered by impending official engagements, to carry out lobbying activities. In that regard, in her capacity as Foreign Minister, Minister Johnson Smith attended meetings of the Economic and Social Council (United Nations, New York, April 2022); the CARICOM Agri-Investment Forum & Expo (Guyana, May 2022); the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (United Nations, Geneva, June 2022); and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Rwanda, June 2022)”.

It also noted that Johnson Smith met with Heads of Government and counterpart Ministers on the margins of these programmed activities, to conduct the work of the Jamaican delegation, and simultaneously, to promote the candidature.

“This is standard operation in international organisations, particularly by small states like Jamaica, which are conscious of the need to capitalise on these avenues to conduct international relations, in order to minimise costs,” said the OPM.

It disclosed that the foreign affairs minister’s travel schedule took her to seven African countries in 10 days as she sought their votes for the secretary general post.

However, all of that would come to naught as, at the end of a divisive campaign, Scotland prevailed by a 27-24 margin and will serve out her remaining two years as secretary general.

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, had stated that Jamaica was making a “monumental mistake” in challenging a Scotland for the post. He said the decision threatened to divide the 15-member Caricom bloc.

The OPM said the Jamaican government ran a clean, transparent, principled campaign that met the standards of accountability.

Cops burst into porn shoot, arrest couple at hotel in Thailand Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

This is the dramatic moment police burst into a porn shoot to arrest a couple while they had sex in eastern Thailand on August 6.

Cyber cops had been tracking the group online before they traced them to a luxury pool villa in Sattahip. Footage shows officers storming into the building while a man and woman filmed an explicit scene on a white bed.

Several other men were in the villa filming the action with professional equipment.

Police arrested a Thai female, aged 24, and Thai male, aged 26, along with the Chinese porn director, who has been identified as Lee, 33, and his interpreter Ajong, 24, who was also from China.

Aside from the porn crew, officers also seized evidence from the set, including cameras, lighting equipment, and other props.

Royal Thai Police chief Police Lieutenant General Kornchai Khlaikhleung said: “We received information that a group from China were filming obscene movies in the Pattaya and Bangkok area. Investigators found out they had rented a pool villa in Sattahip, so we obtained a search warrant.”

The foreign porn director reportedly hired Thai actors and actresses to star in his films for website and television streaming. Director Lee reportedly paid the arrested Thai porn actress 20,000 baht (463 GBP) while the male actor received 6,000 baht (138 GBP) daily.

The group said they had only been filming for two days, starting on August 4, when authorities caught them. The four arrested were charged with conspiring to produce pornographic material and were detained at a Chom Thian Police Station during investigation.

Indecency laws in Thailand, still a relatively conservative Buddhist country despite its flashy red-light districts, state that “making, producing, possessing, importing, exporting, or distributing pornography for commercial purposes, for distribution, or for public display” can be punished by up to three years in prison along with a fine of up to 60,000 baht. The computer crime act bans “bringing pornography into a computer system” and can be punished with up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

China has invested heavily in Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia. The country was its biggest tourist destination before the pandemic.

LETTER: Is Harold Lovell like a donkey in a horse race?

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

DEAR EDITOR:

Throughout life’s journey, we tend to make  decisions that we think best suits our  curiosity. Then later on, we experience regrets based on the outcome of that decision and then disapppointingly say to ourselves, ”  if I had known……”

From my personal experience, I have learnt to treasure those persons who I have around me because in reality we tend not to know the true value of a person until they are no longer with us. As the old saying goes ” you never miss the water until the well runs dry.

Now, as we get closer to the date of our general elections, I am sure that ” Good Leadership ” is a component that is now resonating in the minds of most us. Hence, the two popular persons, Gaston Browne & Harold Lovell, who are vying for political supremacy, are now being tossed up in our thoughts. Ofcourse, the question is asked which one of the two will be the best choice to be our nation’s leader?

Regretably, we have seen & heard that some leaders in other countries are ousted out office because their mandate of good leadership are no longer met. Recently, Boris Johnson of the UK  experience such fate & likewise Keith Mitchell of Grenada.

Now let’s zoom in and see what Harold & Gaston has to offer.

Harold Lovell is highly qualified. He is liked by many and he connects well with the people. In addition, he is a very good communicator , very charismatic, very well attired and he certainly portrays an image of a true statesman. However, as a professional, does his past track record speak well of him?

According to reports, as an attorney, Mr. Lovell has not made a reputable name for himself.  The several losses at the polls is indicative that he has failed his constituents. His political colleagues, see him as a back stabber .  As a finance minister he has made some terrible decisions, resulting to the mismanagement of the country’s finances.

Clearly, it is obvious that for this election Harold may be seen as a donkey in a horse race. It is evident that his track record does not seem to be matching up to his opponent.

Under Lovell’s watch the country’s finances began depleting rapidly from the treasury. Persons began losing jobs. Others began exiting the public system & seeking employment within the private sector. The education system, utilities & the national security sector began deteriorating. The national debt spiked immediately. The IMF program had citizens & residents crippled. Mr. Lovell and Mr. Spencer was just not astute enough to take the nation out of such turbulence.

Gaston Browne on the other hand, seems to be a person who is not liked by many. He is not as neatly attired as Mr. Lovell, neither is he as charismatic as him also. Infact, I will agree that Mr. Browne gets a bit abrasive unnecessarily and may react to criticisms a bit too hastily. However, on the flip side, as a leader & as a professional, his track record speaks extremely positively for him.

Throughout his academic pursuits, he has been very successful. In his private life he has been an adorable husband. As a manager in the banking sector, he has been highly respected. As a young entrepreneur he has accomplished quite a alot. His political resumé exhibits as a politician, as constituency representative, as a finance minister and as a Prime Minister, that his leadership skills is making leaps and bounds, thus positively transforming the economic status of the country.

Interestingly, his regional & international counterparts have even taken pages from his political bio & used him as a case study to administer their own political affairs

It is evident that Gaston who is presently the nation’s leader is certainly fitting to continue his reign. The record shows that he has a vision & a fortitude to propel this country forward,  & to transform it from a third world country to a first world country within this Caribbean hemisphere. Unemployment is now low. Housing & private transportation is on the rise. Persons are more self reliant due to tertiary education & entrepreneurship is now the order of day.

There is no doubt the best choice for the nation’s leadership will be Gaston Browne accompanied by his ABLP administration to keep this beautiful nation a float.
