Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah has qualified for the final of the women’s 200-metre race at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Thompson-Herah ran 22.63 seconds on Friday to easily win her semifinal heat and move on to the medal round, which is scheduled for Saturday at 2:32 pm Jamaica time.

The time represents the quickest in the three semifinals.

The Jamaican sprint queen is looking for the sprint double after holding off Julien Alfred of St Lucia and Daryll Neita of England, to claim the 100m gold in 10.95 seconds on Wednesday.

She is the only one of Jamaica’s star trio in Birmingham as world 200m champion Shericka Jackson and 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce skipped the Games following last month’s World Championships in Eugene.

Thompson-Herah finished a disappointing seventh in the 200m in Eugene in 22.39 as 28-year-old Jackson set a new championships record and the second-fastest time in history, winning in a sensational 21.45. Fraser-Pryce took silver with a new season’s best time of 21.81.

Natalliah Whyte of Jamaica has also progressed to the final.

Whyte ran 23.09 seconds to qualify. She finished second in the first semifinal heat behind Favour Ofili of Nigeria who ran 22.66 and second overall.

Whyte’s 23.09 is the fourth quickest over the semifinal heats.

Also through to the final is Christine Mboma of Nigeria who won heat two in 22.93, the third quickest.

In the men’s 200m, Jamaica’s Kadrian Goldson failed to progress to the final after finishing sixth in the second semifinal. He crossed the line in 21.13.

The Agro-Investment Corporation, the Agribusiness investment facilitation arm of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, is partnering with the Forestry Department an Agency of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation to plant 60 trees islandwide in commemoration of Jamaica’s 60th Anniversary of Independence.

The 6,000 seedlings, including fruit, timber and ornamental trees, will be provided by the Forestry Department and planted by the Agro-Investment Corporation’s team on the Agro Parks and Production Zones across the island. This tree planting project will also contribute to the National Tree Planting Initiative launched by the prime minister with a target of three million trees in three years.

The islandwide tree planting activity is expected to begin on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, with an official launch and symbolic tree planting at the Amity Hall Agro Park in St Catherine.

Chief Executive Officer of the Agro-Investment Corporation, Dr Al Powell, has stated that “he has a passion for agricultural investments including investments in orchard and tree crops. The objective is to pay tribute to the 60th Anniversary of our country’s independence as well as to support the National Tree Planting initiative announced by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Honourable Andrew Holness.”

“Tree planting is about investing in our future,” said Conservator of Forests and Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Department, Ainsley Henry.

“As we reflect and celebrate the 60 years of our nation’s independence, we must continue to ensure that we make the necessary investments to safeguard our environment for future generations. We welcome this partnership to plant 6,000 trees with the Agro-Investment Corporation as one of our activities to celebrate Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of independence.”

The 6,000 trees to be planted will be spread across the Amity Hall Agro Park in St Catherine, Ebony Park and Spring Plain Agro Parks in Clarendon, New Forest/Duff House Agro Park in St. Elizabeth, Yallahs and Plantain Garden River Agro Parks (PGR) in St Thomas, Holland Estate in St. Elizabeth, and New Pen Production Zone in St Mary.

The National Tree Planting Initiative (NTPI) was officially launched on National Tree Planting Day in 2019, with completion targeted within three years. Planting three million trees is aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change while providing an opportunity for everyone to contribute to increasing the island’s forest cover and beautifying their surroundings through tree planting. As of March 2022, more than a million trees have been planted/distributed in support of the Initiative.

Ministry of Health dismisses social media claims of confirmed cases of monkeypox in Antigua and Barbuda

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment wishes to state that, contrary to social media posts, there are no confirmed monkeypox cases in Antigua and Barbuda. The Ministry is outraged that any personwould disseminate false information suggesting the presence of monkeypox in the twin island state. This act became even more egregious when it was established that the perpetrator is a current employee of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre. We strongly condemn any such act creating alarm and distress in the public.

We would urge all members of the public to be responsible at all times in disseminating information and to desist from circulating false information that undermines our public health system.

All laboratory investigations for suspected monkeypox cases have been negative both at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre that commenced monkeypox testing last week. We therefore reiterate that THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED CASES OF MONKEYPOX IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA.

Please be assured that if and when a monkeypox case is confirmed the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment will promptly report this information to the public. This is consistent with the Ministry’s commitment to transparency, particularly with regard to public health matters, as demonstrated in the past.

In the meantime, members of the public are reminded that monkeypox is a viral disease characterized by a fever, enlarged lymph nodes and a rash. Monkeypox is spread from person to person by direct contact with the rash, bodily fluids (fluid, pus or blood from skin lesions), and scabs. Clothing, sheets, towels and other objects can also be a source of infection. The virus is also transmitted from pregnant a mother to her unborn child. Physicians are reminded to report any suspected cases monkeypox to the MOHWE’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit.

There is no specific treatment for monkeypox. However, the public is advised that social and physical distancing, frequent handwashing and wearing facemasks may prevent infection. Persons are therefore strongly advised to practice these public health and social measures to avoid becoming infected.

UK Government Donates a Further 5000 doses of Astra-Zeneca to Antigua and Barbuda

The British High Commission St John’s is pleased to confirm the UK has donated a further 5000 doses of Astra-Zeneca to Antigua and Barbuda.

The doses will arrive on Saturday 6 August.  The UK previously donated 12,000 doses of Astra-Zeneca to the twin-island nation in August 2021.

Resident British Commissioner, Ms Lindsy Thompson, said “this donation reinforces the UK’s commitment to supporting Antigua and Barbuda’s fight against COVID.  The nation’s vaccination rates are some of the best in the region, but no one is safe until we are all safe.  In keeping with the advice from the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Health, Wellness and Environment, I encourage all eligible citizens and residents to get vaccinated and/or boosted.”

The UK has been at the forefront of the global response to Covid-19, including through investing £90 million to support the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

Over half a billion doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine have beendelivered at a non-profit price globally, with two-thirds going to lower and middle income countries.

The UK also kick-started efforts to establish COVAX in 2020, providing a total of £548 million to fund vaccines for lower income countries.

Judge declares, auditor general’s department a ‘public authority’ under FOIA

Black Immigrant Daily News

News

Justice Kevin Ramcharan. –

A HIGH COURT judge has declared the auditor general’s department is a public authority under the Freedom of Information Act.

This is the second judgment, in as many weeks, by the local courts relating to state bodies being deemed public authorities for the purpose of the FOIA.

On Friday, Justice Kevin Ramcharan declared that the auditor general’s department was a public authority under the FOIA and was required to provide a former human resource officer at the Port of Spain City Corporation, and any other person, with non-exempt documents asked for in a request under the act.

In his ruling, Ramcharan said, “There can be no doubt that the defendant is acting on behalf of the State in the sense that it is acting in the interest of the State.

“Section 4(k)(i) of FOIA therefore applies and the defendant is a public authority under the act.”

Joan Chee, who retired from the corporation in 2019, requested from the corporation several documents and information on policies after she did not get any update on the processing of her file for gratuity and pension.

She also wanted to know the steps to be followed by the auditor general’s department for retired public officers from the corporation to receive their gratuity and retirement benefits.

The department provided responses to Chee but also said it was not a public authority under the FOIA based on a legal opinion from the solicitor general, dated February 2003.

Chee filed a judicial review claim in April 2021, but died in June, this year, before she could receive judgment.

In 2017, Chee was successful in litigation against the Statutory Authority Service Commission after she was bypassed for promotion and the corporation failed to pay gratuity after 40 years of service.

In his ruling, Ramcharan while Chee had received the documents she requested, the case concerned the construction of “public authority” under the FOIA.

“It is not simply the provision of information allowed under the FOIA but that which is afforded by public authorities in particular which the defendant disputes that it is.”

He also said there was “much to be gained” by the court providing advice to the department for dealing with future FOIA applications.

The judge said while the Constitution shielded the office of the auditor general from the direction or control of any person, as it related to the exercise of its functions, that independence “did not necessarily render the Auditor General” not a public authority.

“Parliament would not have intended section 116(6) to allow for the Auditor General to be free from being held accountable.

“The fact still remains that after his functions have been performed, the Auditor General is obligated to submit reports to the Speaker, President of the Senate and the Minister of Finance which is also provided for in the Constitution under section 116(4).

“Following this said obligation to send reports to the Minister of Finance, as contained in the Constitution, the Exchequer and Audit Act provides for what the Minister may ask of the Defendant,” the judge said.

“Undoubtedly the functions of the Auditor General are public in nature,”he added.

“There can be no doubt that the defendant is acting on behalf of the State in the sense that is acting in the interest of the State.

“Section 4(k)(i) of FOIA therefore applies and the defendant is a public authority under the Act,” he ruled.

Chee was represented by Anand Ramlogan, SC, Jayanti Lutchmedial, Renuka Rambhajan, and Alana Rambaran while the Auditor General was represented by Reginald Armour, SC, before he became Attorney General in March; Raphael Ajodhia, Kezia Redhead and Tiffany Kissoon.

Last week, the Court of Appeal also declared that TSTT was a public authority under the FOIA.

“Bond” Actress Lashana Lynch Cast As Rita In Bob Marley’s Biopic

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Lashana Lynch will play the iconic Marley matriarch, Rita Marley, in Bob’s upcoming movie.

The No Time To Die actress has been cast to play the role of Bob Marley’s Wife, Rita, in an upcoming Paramount Biopic on the life of Bob Marley. Paramount has been casting for the right characters since last year, and they have finally settled on Lynch, who also has Jamaican roots. Lynch, who was born in West London, Britain, to Jamaican parents, made history as the first female black 007 agent in the hit James Bond franchise based on books by author Ian Fleming who wrote all of the books from his Goldeneye winter home in Jamaica.

According to Deadline on Friday, Lynch will star as Rita Marley, in the yet untitled Bob Marley biopic alongside actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, who will play the legendary Reggae singer. Paramount has tapped Oscar-winning director Reinaldo Marcus Green helming, who is well-known for his recent King Richard biopic that focuses on the father of Venus and Serena Williams.

According to Deadline, the actress was selected from a large casting call examining actresses with a Jamaican background. There were also chemistry checks to see if the actress would be suitable to work with Ben-Adir. Deadline also said that the Marleys, including Rita and other family members, were part of the final decision to select Rita’s character.

Bob Marley and Rita Marley

The biopic will be produced by Rita, her son Ziggy Marley and daughter Cedella Marley on behalf of Tuff Gong Records, along with producer Robert Teitel and scriptwriters Green and Zach Baylin.

Bob Marley gained legendary status long before his death in 1981 when he was just 36. The singer died of cancer, but by that time, he had lived a full life, having already gotten married and had several children with his wife, and left a major impact on the world with his reggae music that spread to the corners of the globe. The genre has become very popular undoubtedly thanks to Marley’s music, although his friends and brother Dennis Brown and Peter Tosh also made their mark.

His songs “Get Up, Stand Up,” “One Love,” “No Woman, No Cry,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Buffalo Soldier,” “Jammin’,” and “Redemption Song” continue to sit on reggae music charts worldwide as the artist’s fame grows every year.

In the meantime, the biopic will focus on Bob’s and Rita’s love story and their marriage. Rita and Bob fell in love as the latter was just getting into music. A singer herself, she eventually became a member of Marley’s Bob Marley and the Wailers group as a backup singer.

Her own early story showed she was a member of The Soulettes, which Marley mentored before the two fell in love. They later got married as Marley was migrating to the U.S with his mother and his marriage led to the artist not being able to get his green card as he was not allowed to get married until after his status was regulated.

More details on the biopic are yet to be released.
