KING ARTHUR won the battle of derby winners on Saturday, turning back CALCULUS to score a half-length victory in the seven-furlong Eros Trophy for Open Allowance/Graded Stakes runners at Caymanas Park.

The 2000 Jamaica Derby winner made the most of a light impost, 115lb, an 11lb advantage over CALCULUS, to land his second Open Allowance win in two months following his upset victory at the expense of DUKE at six furlongs in May.

Speedy even-money favourite, RUNAWAY ALGO, led under pressure from EROY and afterwards I’VE GOT MAGIC, before KING ARTHUR and CALCULUS, last year’s derby champion, launched their bids in the stretch run.

Running against the rail with champion jockey Anthony Thomas, KING ARTHUR surged forward inside the last half-furlong to overhaul RUNAWAY ALGO before holding off CALCULUS to win in 1:24.3.

KING ARTHUR handed leading trainer Jason DaCosta a second winner on the 10-race card following four-year-old JOHNCROW JEFF’s all-the-way triumph off a 13-month lay-up at four furlongs straight.

Punters who missed out on the Ketch 9 mandatory payout of $256,990,stumped by BALAZO’s 13-1 upset in the third event for $550,000 claimers at six furlongs, have a Reggae 6 mandatory payout, starting at $10.3 million, to aim at on Monday’s whopping eight-race Emancipation Day holiday card.

Ian Parsard, whose SHE’S A WONDER romped at seven and a half furlongs in the eighth event for overnight-allowance runners, is expected to land Monday’s feature races with MAHOGANY in the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy at five and a half furlongs and BERNING RED at six-and-a half in the Emancipation Day Trophy for $750,000 claimers.

JA: Killer inflicted 95 stab wounds to family of 5 over ‘disrespect’ Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Trigger Warning: The details of these incidents may be traumatic for some readers. Please proceed with caution.

Kimesha Wright, one of the five persons who Rushane ‘Jett’ Barnett pleaded guilty to killing, received 48 incised wounds during the macabre-style attack at her home in Cocoa Piece, Clarendon, Jamaica last month.

Barnett, who claimed that Wright had disrespected him in front of her customers days before the killings, also mercilessly stabbed four of Wright’s children, three of whom had rushed to her defence as she was being butchered by her cousin.

But hours before the slaughtering of the family of five, one of Barnett’s other cousins had seen Barnett with a knife and heard Barnett saying, “Mi go warn mi brother out a Chapelton seh mi a go kill some people tonight, suh him fi look out a him eye.”

In all, the five family members received a total of 95 incised wounds to their bodies – all inflicted by Barnett.

The details of the events of the killings which occurred between the night of June 20 and the early morning of June 21, were outlined by prosecutors when the case was called up on Thursday in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston, Jamaica.

According to a post-mortem report that was read in court, Wright received 48 incised wounds in the region of her neck, chest, abdomen and limbs (hands and feet). Her cause of death was haemorrhage and shock, as well as multiple sharp force injuries.

The youngest of Wright’s children, 23-month-old Kishawn Henry Jr, had 11 incised wounds, inclusive of a wound to the neck, which the doctor described as a cut throat injury, the post-mortem report said.

Wright’s 15-year-old daughter, Kimanda Smith, received nine incised wounds and four stabbed wounds. Her cause of the death, according the post mortem-report, was haemorrhage, shock and multiple stab wounds.

Ten-year-old Sharalee Smith, who received 22 incised wounds and two scratches, along with a cut throat wound to the neck, also died from haemorrhage.

Her sister, five-year-old Rafaella Smith, received five incised wounds and a gaping wound to the upper anterior of the neck.

Aside from those gory details in the post-mortem report, Senior Prosecutor, Andrea Martin Swaby, revealed to the court even more chilling details that were outlined by Barnett in a caution statement to the police.

Barnett, 23, told investigators in the statement that days before the murder, Wright “disrespected” him.

He claimed that one night he was at Wright’s home when two men came and ordered some items. He served them and collected the payments for the items.

According to him, Wright grabbed the money that he collected from the men and told him not to serve any of her customers, the prosecutor read in court.

Barnett said because his cousin did this in front of the customers, he felt disrespected. He said he was even further humiliated when he claimed that Wright flashed some water in his face.

Following the incident, Barnett said he noticed that Wright’s attitude towards him changed, and her children distanced themselves from him.

Victims of the mass murder in Cocoa Piece, Clarendon last month.

On Tuesday, June 21, between midnight and 1am, Barnett said he was at the house when Wright told him to lock up the premises. He said he told her that he heard a vehicle outside, but she looked and said she saw nothing.

It was at that moment that Barnett claimed that he looked at her and she looked at him as if she saw that he was “preeing her”.

The prosecutor said Barnett said he observed Wright making after something on the dresser, but he did not see what the item was.

According to Barnett, he “preed in the heavens that it was a knife or a scissors”.

Barnett, who told officers that he had a knife on him, said he stabbed up Wright and she “dropped the children”.

He said he saw two of the children rushing towards the dresser, and they started throwing things at him.

Barnett claimed that he grabbed them and also stabbed them up.

Wright’s eldest child, Kimanda, according to Barnett, reached for a pair of scissors in another room, and he rushed after her. She fell and he then stabbed her multiple times.

“When everybody was dead, he charged off and threw the shorts and the knife over the side of where a hacker tree was located,” the prosecutor told the court.

Presiding judge, Justice Leighton Pusey, was informed that the same cousin who had earlier seen Barnett in the same shorts and with a knife in hand prior to the killings, identified the bloodied items after they were found by the police.

The prosecutor indicated that she intends to prepare victim impact statements from family members of the deceased persons.

At Barnett’s first court appearance, the prosecution served him a copy of a Death Penalty Notice that it had filed in the Supreme Court ahead of the case.

The court was also informed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) will be seeking the death penalty.

On Thursday, another senior prosecutor, Jeremy Taylor, said the court will hear at the next mention date whether DPP Paula Llewellyn will be pursuing the death penalty when the crown makes its submissions.

But under the present laws of the country, once an offender pleads guilty at the earliest opportunity to do so, he is entitled to a discount from the sentence he is to be given.

Also revealed on the day’s proceedings was a psychiatric evaluation which said Barnett is fit to plead and/or stand trial.

Defence attorney representing Barnett, Tamika Harris, told the judge that despite the findings of the evaluation, she intends to have further discussions with the psychiatrist in relation to Barnett’s mental health.

A social enquiry report and an antecedent report are to be prepared for the next scheduled court date on September 22, 2022.

At that time, Barnett could be sentenced.

WaterStreetBoyz have winning words with Quon Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Songwriters Cheyne Jones and Ian ‘iWeb’ Webster have added another Pic-O-De Crop crown to their shelf.

The dynamic writing duo – The WaterStreetBoyz – was anything but quiet during the pandemic. In fact, they partnered with numerous musicians and artistes throughout the region to give an anthem of hope, with lyrics that said together we would get past COVID.

In the wee hours of this morning, Saturday, July 30, Quon won his first Pic-O-De Crop title with Animal Kingdom, which came from working with the WaterStreetBoyz.

Talking to one-half of the pair, Jones, Loop found out how it feels to have the winning words.

Jones said, “The WaterStreetBoyz are elated at the results in the Pic-O-De Crop finals.”

Witnessing the evolution of Quon, who was one of the five former Junior Monarchs going up against the veterans this year, Jones explained, “It is incredible to see the phenomenal growth of Quon, who just a few years ago wasn’t making it past the Junior Monarch preliminary stage. Fast forward to 2022, and he has two junior monarch titles and now the prestigious title of Calypso Monarch of Barbados. To say we are proud is an understatement.”

But Quon’s win was just the topper on the cake; the cake was the fact that the WaterStreetBoyz got three of the top four spots after judges returned at the end of the Finals performances.

Jones said that is “more than we could have hoped for and we feel blessed.

“However, results for us doesn’t just mean what the judges say, but the response from the general public to the music, and we are happy with the overwhelming appreciation we have been getting.”

Reflecting on last night into today, he shared, “Iweb was his usual fantastic self on the finals stage, and TC delivered the extremely popular Kaiso Reporter well. Teri has won the hearts of many Bajans, and people keep saying she is one to watch. Doyenne showed Barbados what she is capable of in the big league. We are extremely happy with the way our singers delivered last night.”

Talking preparation that led to the final results, he said that for an involved songwriter such as himself, it was just as rigorous as it is for the singers.

“The last few months have been very demanding but extremely rewarding. I am very hands-on with the creative process in terms of helping artistes to interpret the songs and communicate the message so that it resonates. So that includes going to the rehearsals, taking long calls discussing the content and watching their performances for what can be improved on; seeing which lines the crowd responds to and tweaking lyrics based on seeing what works,” he explained.

WaterStreetBoyz compilations in the 2022 Pic-O-De Crop Finals:

Quon – Animal Kingdom

Iweb – Dear Lord

TC – Kaiso Reporter

Teri – Who We Are

Doyenne – Love Affair

Updates On Andre shared by his family members

July 30th 2022

Thank you so much for supporting Andre on this journey.

This week is a special week.

The doctors have agreed that Andre is showing signs of consciousness. This is great news. We are grateful to God and all the persons praying and supporting Andre.

Now, this does not mean he’s up and walking around or talking. But it does mean that we do not have to worry of if he would ever regain consciousness from the vegetative state.

He is able to use his head to answer questions consistently and correctly. They plan to help him regain control of more of his body.

We still have a very long and slow journey. But thank God. Thank God has some conscious.

Other updates.

His body is free of those infections and his wound continues to heal. They are planning to put a wound vac on it to expedite healing.

Further assessment is needed in the areas of cognition, memory, and promoting relearning for parts of his body.

Thank you sooo much for your prayers and support.

Banana Boat sunscreen recalled due to cancer-causing chemical

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

NEW YORK POST: Banana Boat is recalling three batches of its “hair and scalp” sunscreen after tests found that the product contains trace amounts of cancer-causing chemical benzene, the manufacturer said in an announcement submitted to the Federal Drug Administration.

Exposure to benzene through skin contact, inhalation and by mouth has been linked to cancer such as leukemia, Fox Business reported.

The Shelton, Connecticut-based company claimed in the Friday release that it “has not received any adverse events related to this recall” and that “daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”

The recalled products have expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023 and April 2024, the company said. Banana Boat said it will also offer reimbursement to consumers who bought the recalled products.

The FDA assured that the levels found in the defective sunscreen “would not be expected to cause adverse heath consequences.” Edgewell Personal Care/FDA

No other batches made before or after those expiration dates listed were affected, according to the FDA release, and no other Banana Boat sunscreen is subject to the recall.

The FDA recommends that buyers of Banana Boat’s Hair and Scalp sunscreen should “stop using the affected product immediately and appropriately discard.”

Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact Edgewell Personal Care at 1-888-686-3988 or visit www.bananaboat.com for more information. Banana Boat also announced that they are offering reimbursement for consumers who have purchased a product marked with one of the lot of codes, which is on the bottom of the cans.
