Players of the Maverley Hughenden Football Club, say they are determined to make their mark in several competitions that are now underway, after receiving a major boost from Jamaican-born English-based player Raheem Sterling.

Players say their confidence has been boosted even further as more sponsors are also joining the push by the international player and are coming out with their own form of sponsorship to ensure that when members of the club enter the field of play, they will be fully equipped.

Gears donated by Raheem Sterling and other sponsors to players of the Maverley Football Club

Last week Thursday international football player Raheem Sterling in collaboration with New Balance donated close to three million dollars worth of gear and training equipment.

On Thursday, July 14, several members of the club youth team received part of those donations and dates have been set for additional donations to be made to the senior team.

Following that donation, more sponsors such as Sanmerna Foundation have also joined the thrust to help push the team forward.

Listen as some of the sponsors talk about how encouraged they feel to see the team and club members making strides.

Jamaica’s mixed 4×400-metre relay team qualified for Friday night’s final of the event after placing third in their heat in a time of 3.13.95s.

The time makes Jamaica the seventh fastest team going into the finals, which is scheduled to run off at 9:50 pm local time.

The team of Demish Gaye, Roneisha McGregor, Karayme Bartley, and Tiffany James, running in that order, secured the spot for Jamaica.

It is not immediately clear if any change will be made for the finals, but Jamaica will be hard pressed to repeat its performance from three years ago when it copped the silver medal in the event at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

The US team is going into the finals with the fastest time, which is a world leading 3:11.75s, followed by the Netherlands with a season’s best 3:12.63s, the Dominican Republic, also with a season’s best 3:13.22s, and Poland with a season’s best 3:13.70s.

CIBC FirstCaribbean Advances The Sale Of Its Assets In Two OECS Countries

FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited (“FirstCaribbean”) announced today that the sale of its business to two indigenous banks in the eastern Caribbean has received approval from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

The bank further announced that it will now begin the process of transferring its clients to the Bank of St. Vincent & Grenadines Limited in St. Vincent and the St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla National Bank in St. Kitts.  This process is expected to take several months.

The sale of the Caribbean bank’s business in five countries – Aruba, St. Vincent, Grenada and St. Kitts & Nevis & Dominica – was announced in October of 2021.

The Aruba sale was completed earlier this year.

The parties continue to discuss and negotiate key aspects of the transaction in the proposed sale of CIBC FirstCaribbean’s assets to Grenada Co-operative Bank Limited.

The bank further announced that the sale of its assets in Dominica to the National Bank of Dominica will not proceed, as NBD has announced a change in its strategic direction, which does not include an acquisition at this time.

Colette Delaney, Chief Executive Officer of CIBC FirstCaribbean, noted: “We are pleased at the approval of the sales in St. Vincent and St. Kitts.

This helps us deliver on our strategy of simplifying our business.

It’s a complex set of transactions and it will be some months before we complete the transfer of client accounts over to the purchasing banks.

In the interim, we will continue to provide our clients with first class service through a modern everyday banking experience and our employees with the best possible work experience.”

Govt to work with banking sector to bolster small business development—President Ali

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana
President Dr Irfaan Ali

President Dr Irfaan Ali said that the Government is presently examining ways to work with the local banking sector to create more opportunities for Guyana’s ever-evolving economy, particularly for small businesses.

He noted that creating “innovative ways” were essential for micro-enterprises, which do not possess the type of collateral or cash outlay to benefit from the opportunities available.

“We have to have a discussion on the apportionment of that risk and how we can minimise or remove the collateral requirement and take the contract at face value, and then work out a mechanism through which a contract at face value is used to support those business operations.”

The Head of State, who has often spoken about the importance of the banking sector in the development of Guyana, made the statement during the launch of Demerara Bank’s new branch in Leonora, on the West Coast of Demerara on Thursday.

He called the location and level of investment essential to the development of Region Three.

“I have no doubt that this investment will be successful, that this investment with everything else that is happening around here will create a modern economic hub that will generate thousands of jobs. We have no doubt that development like these will support the other massive transformative developments that will take place along the coastline.”

The bank, which will be constructed at just over $150m at Groenveldt, Leonora, is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.

IN SYNC WITH DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

The President reminded that only a few weeks ago the bank launched a special initiative that is collateral free to help small farmers. This he added, is another example of Demerara Bank creating a vehicle to support the development agenda.

“Moving here also shows that you are actively working in sync with the development agenda of the country and the Government….In this location here alone, we’re not only talking about a bank, we’re talking about a new mall, and we’re talking about the new hospital. You’re talking about a private housing development that will see 40 to 50 executive style homes, that construction has already started, and 100 condos geared towards international market in this one location.”

The major development projects earmarked for the region include Wales’s Gas-to-Shore project, the construction of the new Demerara River Bridge and the new four-lane highway from Schoonord to Crane.

The President said that these and other transformative projects across the country are undoubtedly affecting the demand for materials and services, a challenge faced globally. As such, he urged that businesses “work a bit harder and more creative” in finding more localised solutions to combat the global crisis.

“Understand what this means for demand. Understand the trickledown effect. Already we are feeling the effect of this in not a positive way… all of this is happening under very difficult global circumstances, not only in terms of food prices but in terms of material prices. Forget about the prices let’s not even go to the prices; the supply. There is no supply; huge deficit in global demand and supply.”

To this end, the President lauded the efforts of those who continue to innovate despite the difficulties.

“I am very pleased with the proactive and innovative work of Demerara Bank and to say to the leadership and the staff that your work, you may not see it now but years from now, you will reflect and you will happily say you are part of this transformation.”

NBA YoungBoy Celebrates Not Guilty Verdict In Federal Gun Case

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

NBA YoungBoy was found not guilty in his federal gun case in California on Friday.

The jury returned with a not guilty verdict just after lunch on Friday after they went into deliberations the day before.

Videos shared online show fans of the rapper reacting to the victorious win outside of the courthouse. NBA YoungBoy was potentially facing 7-10 years in jail in the case, and in a comment to Rolling Stone, he said, “I feel great,” in reaction to the ruling.

The not guilty verdict comes as the prosecution fought a losing battle to prove that a gun found in the car NBA YoungBoy was driving belonged to him. The prosecution’s case began on a downward spiral after the judge threw out their motion to enter rap lyrics to tie him to the gun despite them being allowed to enter into evidence a Shyne photo or the Instagram video.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s attorney, in a report by Rolling Stone, said that the images presented by the prosecution could not be distinguished from a toy gun, the Tokyo Marui Airsoft FNX-45 replica gun that sells for $169.

In summation to the jury, Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Elbogen said that the gun was found in YoungBoy’s car, although it was not bought in his name.

“I don’t think in the 10 or 12 days that he had this brand new car that he had tons of people using it and hanging out in the back who might have just left a very expensive gun behind. And if you’re a good friend, you wouldn’t leave it in a car for a friend who you know is a felon, either,” she told the jury.

“We saw him in Baton Rouge right after the gun was purchased with a gun that looks like it,” she said about the Instagram video. “I submit to you, if you focus on the evidence in this case, your job will be very simple. You will find the defendant guilty of being a felon in possession.”

Meanwhile, NBA YoungBoy is still on house arrest following his ongoing Louisiana case also for illegal gun possession. The rapper scored a major victory last month after the presiding judge ruled that surveillance video evidence prosecutors wanted to be entered into evidence was inadmissible because officers had no legal authority to obtain it due to a faulty search warrant.

Bedjine chante :

<< Sa fini vre, ou debalize m

Yon sol?y ki te

leve men m lannwit >>

Pickled jalapenos and vinegary brine boost avocado salad Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

One of the best ways to build flavour is layering or using one ingredient in two ways or at different stages of cooking.

Using the zest of a lemon in cake batter, for instance, while using the juice in a citrusy glaze.

It’s a technique we rely on often in our book COOKish, which limits recipes to just six ingredients without sacrificing flavour.

And it works particularly well with pickled jalape?os in this recipe for a simple salad with arugula and avocado.

The jalape?os themselves add juicy bursts of radiant heat, but we also treat the pickling liquid as a separate ingredient.

Using 1/4 cup of the liquid as the acid in the vinaigrette boosts the dressing’s flavour without needing additional vinegar.

Along with the avocado, pumpkin seeds offer enough richness to make the salad a light main course or pair it with sliced grilled skirt steak or hearty grains such as barley, farro or quinoa.

Arugula and avocado salad, drizzled with Jalape?o vinaigrette

Start to finish: 15 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

3 to 4 tbsps pickled jalape?o slices, chopped, plus 1/4 cup pickling liquid

2 tbsps extra-virgin olive oil

4 cups lightly packed baby arugula

3 radishes, halved and thinly sliced OR 1/2 English cucumber, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced

1 cup lightly packed fresh cilantro OR 4 scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal

1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted

2 ripe but firm avocados, halved, pitted, peeled and sliced

Kosher salt and ground black pepper

Method

In a large bowl, whisk together the jalape?os and their liquid, the oil and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the arugula, radishes, cilantro and half of the pumpkin seeds, then toss. Season with salt and pepper. Fold in the avocado. Transfer to a serving bowl, then sprinkle with the remaining pumpkin seeds.

Jamaica’s athletes can earn a bounty from the World Athletics Championships, which is underway at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The 2020 World Championships will offer the largest prize purse in the event’s history. The organising body, World Athletics, has increased its monetary share from the 2019 event in Doha, Qatar, which saw athletes receive US$7.53 million. Individual winners at this World Championships, will collect US$70,000; second place US$35,000; third place US$22,000; fourth place US$16,000; fifth place US$11,000; sixth place US$7,000; seventh place US$6,000 and eighth place US$5,000. Should a Jamaican break a World Championship record, they will be eligible for a special award of US$100,000, offered by TDK and World Athletics.

Jamaica’s three top contenders in the women’s 100 metres — reigning world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce; Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and the Olympic bronze medallist Shericka Jackson are expected to dominate. The Jamaican women have the three fastest times this year, heightening expectations that they will secure a podium finish this year. They are also down to contest the women’s 200 metres. Jackson clocked 21.55 at the National Championships in June, the fastest time in the world this year. Thompson-Herah is the Olympic champion and the fastest woman alive in the event. Jamaica will also figure prominently in both the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles. Olympic champion Hansle Parchment leads the charge in the 110 metres hurdles and is joined by Rasheed Broadbell, Orlando Bennett and Damion Thomas. In the women’s 100-metre hurdles, Britany Anderson has been creating a buzz on the track and field circuit. Jamaica is also represented by Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper and 2015 World Championships winner Danielle Williams. Among the other individual events which Jamaicans are likely to perform well and earn a portion of the prize money are the women’s 400 metres and 400 metres hurdles. The potential for the Jamaicans to earn will continue in the relays events, with World Athletics offering US$80,000 to the victors, US$40,000 for second, US$20,000 for third, US$16,000 for fourth, US$12,000 for fifth, US$8,000 for sixth, US$6,000 for seventh and US$4,000 for eighth. Jamaica’s team of Fraser-Pryce, Jackson, Thompson-Herah, Kemba Nelson and Briana Williams is favoured to win the women’s 4×100 metres event. Jamaica is also expected to medal in the women’s 4×400 metres, in addition to the men’s 4×100, 4×400 and mixed relays.
