UPP: Jolly Beach Workers Still Holding Empty Bag as PM Promises Another Opening Date

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE UPP:

Jolly Beach Workers Still Holding Empty Bag as PM Promises Another Opening Date

The long–suffering former workers of Jolly Beach are once again being taken for a ride, as this administration has issued yet another timeline for the resuscitation of the now decrepit property.

The Gaston Browne-led ABLP told the nation, last week, that in 60 days the hotel will be up and running as government will purchase the property and Apple Vacations will manage it.

By the last count, there have been six separate announcements of buyers and that many opening dates.

At every announcement, the former workers were told their just due will be prioritized.

As early as September 2020 Sunwing pulled out of the deal; In December, a 300 million dollar investor from Holland was identified.

In May 2022 a prospective buyer who would invest 200 million dollars was announced. And then again in the same month, Elite Island Resorts was tipped to manage the hotel.

In July Cabinet announced that the Barett group was no longer interested. On July 9, Gaston Browne declared government will purchase the property and turn it over to Apple Vacations.

Were it not such a serious issue, with the lives of the patient staff literally at stake, it would be laughable.

Following one of the announcements of a sale, government “discovered” that there was a 15 million dollar caution on the property and that no sale could take place without it being lifted by the court.

The PM noted in Parliament on Monday that the court is expected to make its decision in September.

The question then becomes: Is the Jolly Beach matter one of gross incompetence? Why have all these attempts to secure investors failed? Where does the true problem lie? What will Apple Vacations do differently? More importantly, why continue to make these premature announcements before details are finalized?

Is this just further evidence of this administration’s mishandling of the nation’s affairs?

This Jolly Beach saga illustrates the need for a credible body to create a climate for bona fide investors as was demonstrated under a UPP leadership. The Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority provided such.

UPP Political Leader Harold Lovell says “With all of the ABLP claims of supply chain issues that have been associated with fixing the water issues, are we to believe that a Jolly Beach Resort can be fully refurbished in 60 days? The Gaston Browne administration has the record for the greatest number of failed projects anywhere in the world. This is largely due to playing politics to make headlines, as opposed to being prudent in managing the affairs of the country.”

GNBS increases capacity to verify GPL’s electricity meters

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has increased its capacity to verify electricity meters submitted by the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) Inc. in a more efficient manner. This is made possible with the acquisition of a modern electricity test bench capable of verifying five meters simultaneously.

The new piece of equipment was recently acquired from ZERA India –a subsidiary of German Zähler-Eich-und-Reparatur-Anstalt (Meter Calibration and Repair Institute). The company on Tuesday facilitated a practical training with Inspectors of the GNBS along with representatives from GPL Inc. on the use of the equipment.

The practical training was preceded by a four-day theoretical session hosted during the period July 5- 8, 2022 by CENAMEP AIP – the National Metrology Center of Panama. The session titled ‘Introduction to the metrological verification of electricity meters’ was virtually facilitated by the agency’s representative Mr. Julio Gonzalez.

Topics covered included the importance of energy measurement, electric energy meters and metrological verification service for meters.

Senior Inspector in the GNBS’ Legal Metrology Department Mr. Keemo Fyffe noted that the training aimed at developing the competence of the Inspectors to accurately verify electricity meters using the new equipment. Mr. Fyffe added that the GNBS appreciates the donation of the equipment and training provided which will boost the delivery of its Legal Metrology measurement services.

In accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1981, the GNBS is responsible for the verification of all weighing and measuring instruments used in trade and devices used within the health, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture and other sectors in Guyana, to ensure equity in trade, consumer protection and safety.

Electricity meters, which are installed on residential and commercial buildings to determine electricity use, are submitted to the Bureau to be verified upon importation. The GNBS has so far verified 11,768 meters for the year.

Chastanet Criticises SLP Over Discrepancies Between Its Words And Actions – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has criticised the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government for not matching its words with actions.

The former Prime Minister told reporters that the people heard many words leading up to July 26, 2021, general elections which swept labour into government.

But Chastanet declared that the SLP’s actions had not matched its words.

By way of example, he referred to the situation with Minelle.

Minelle has been a calypso monarch multiple times and recently was the target of a vicious attack that resulted in her hospitalisation.

“My heart really goes out to her. But here is a cultural icon and you would have thought that the government of the day would have done more to help her. So again here it is in opposition words were: ‘Women Power. Represent our own culture and support it’. But here’s an opportunity to be able to do that and they haven’t,” Chastanet declared.

“The list goes on and on,” he asserted.

Chastanet also referred to an ongoing project at Vigie, noting that generally, in a ‘guava season like this’ with so many unemployed individuals, the sidewalks and drains would at least be sub-divided into multiple contracts.

But instead, the former Prime Minister told reporters that someone with a ‘squeaky voice’ got the contract.

He did not go into detail.

Chstanet spoke Tuesday on the sidelines of parliament, where several bills were down for consideration.

He told reporters that all bills are important because they pertain to the country’s governance.

And the United Workers Party (UWP) Leader observed that the bills indicate the government’s direction.

However he said the irony was that the SLP had all the solutions to problems while in opposition.

“And here is it they are in government and I see many money bills – $18 Million for the blue economy, other monies being allocated,” the Micoud South MP observed.

“You would have thought they would have repurposed those monies because the need on the ground right now is dire,” Chastanet told reporters.

“So the income support programmes, programmes to stimulate economic activity on the ground – you would have thought that would have been the priority of this government,” Chastanet stated.

The former Prime Minister declared that he had no idea regarding the direction of the labour administration, but he knew what was happening on the ground.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV
