The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has advised people living in flood-prone, low-lying areas to take precautions as a trough system affects Saint Lucia.

NEMO Acting Director Maria Medard explained Monday evening that the Meteorological Services had indicated there would be more showers the following day.

“We are advising persons who live in hazard-prone areas like areas prone to landslides, flooding and flash flooding to be vigilant, to be cautious,” Medard said.

And she advised people in communities with a chance of flooding to consider moving to higher ground with a family member or friend.

“We want people to be cautious, to ensure they clear the drains around their homes to ensure the free flow of water. We have seen the damage that water-clogged drains can do over the last couple of weeks,” the NEMO official told St Lucia Times.

On November 6, a trough system triggered devastating floods in the North of Saint Lucia, resulting in millions of dollars in estimated losses and damage.

In the aftermath of the recent floods, Medard asserted that it would be better to err on caution and be prepared.

“it is better to prepare and nothing happens,” she explained.

In its 6:00 pm weather report, the Met Office said a broad area of disturbed weather associated with a trough system would continue to generate cloudiness, showers, gusty winds, and isolated thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles during the next 24 to 48 hours.

It advised residents and motorists in areas prone to flooding and landslides to exercise caution.

The Met Office also urged small craft operators and sea bathers to exercise caution due to brisk winds and rough seas.

When most of Barbados’ population was indoors on lockdown abiding by curfews and safely out of harm’s way, a second batch of those who had to suit up and go out into the world of work on the frontline during the COVID pandemic, got their praise, pins and awards of acknowledgement today.

Ensuring that the country continued running in what has been recognised as one of the ‘scariest’ and ‘most nerve-wracking’ times in this Century, Loop News interviewed a few of the thousands appreciated this time around. Amongst this cohort of awardees at Kensington Oval for the ceremony were first responders, media professionals, auxiliary staff and others.

When asked to describe how they felt receiving their honours today, the most popular adjective was “humbling” and two interviewees remembered how they used to have to protect their families with their constant sanitising strategies.

Prime Minister Browne Debunks Lies By ABWU Chester Hughes

PM Browne

The Office of the Prime Minister has learned that a representative of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU), former UPP candidate Chester Hughes, has been spreading untruthful and incredibly inaccurate claims regarding the payments to be made to former workers of the Jolly Beach Hotel.

A cheque by Government, made payable to the law firm appointed by the court, in the amount of EC$12.9 million, was handed over to the firm weeks ago, in full settlement of the payments due to former Jolly Beach workers.

The ABWU representative is further fully informed that the cheque has been paid over to the law firm, weeks ago, not last week as he has asserted, for onward payment to the former workers of Jolly Beach.

The ABWU has sought to delay the severance payment by wrongly including ineligible former workers.

The information that has been conveyed to the union representative has been confirmed by Lake & Kentish, the law firm in receipt of the $12.9 million in excess of weeks ago.

The use of outright lies and untruthful public statements is the hallmark of the United Progressive Party (UPP) and its operatives.

There is never “a silly season”; always, the re-election of a government is the most important business that a country can undertake in a democracy.

Trying to persuade citizens and electors to believe that the Head of Government is engaged in prevarications, require more than the propaganda and dissembling of the Assistant Secretary General of the ABWU.

The availability of $12.9 million for former Jolly Beach workers has been paid over for weeks; evidently, the government has discharged its responsibility to settle the severance due to the former Jolly Beach workers.

The matter is now solely within the domain of ABWU and their agent.

Riverine Flood Alert in Effect

THE Met Office has issued a yellow-level ravine flood alert on Monday as river levels continued to rise from heavy rain over the last three days.

The alert is expected to last until 8 pm on Tuesday.

A release sent out at 4 pm said after rain overnight Sunday and on Monday, water levels in the Caroni River were near 90 per cent and continuing to rise.

With occasional periods of heavy showers still likely over the next 24 hours, this additional rainfall can keep the river levels elevated, so there remains a moderate risk to public safety, livelihood and property, it added.

The Met Office advised the public to monitor weather conditions and river/water levels carefully and plan safety measures in the event of an emergency.

The public can get more information at www.metoffice.gov.tt/ and www.odpm.gov.tt.

At least 62 dead, hundreds hurt, in Indonesian earthquake Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

A strong, shallow earthquake toppled buildings and walls on Indonesia’s densely populated main island on Monday, killing at least 62 and injuring hundreds as people fled into the street, some covered in blood and debris.

Officials were gathering information on the toll of those injured and killed by the quake in the remote area.

Emergency workers treated the injured on stretchers and blankets outside hospitals, on terraces and in parking lots in the Cianjur region, about three hours drive from the capital, Java. The injured, including children, were given oxygen masks and IV lines and were being resuscitated.

“I fainted. It was very strong,” said Hasan, a construction worker who, like many Indonesians, uses one name. “I saw my friends running to escape from the building. But it was too late to get out and I was hit by the wall.”

Residents, some crying and holding children, fled damaged homes after the magnitude 5.6 quake shook the region in West Java province in the late afternoon, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where high-rises swayed and some people evacuated.

Rescue teams and civilians in Cianjur were looking for people buried in collapsed brick homes. In many homes, chunks of concrete and roof tiles fell inside bedrooms.

Shopkeeper Dewi Risma was working with customers when the quake hit, and she ran for the exit.

“The vehicles on the road stopped because the quake was very strong,” she said. “I felt it shook three times, but the first one was the strongest one for around 10 seconds. The roof of the shop next to the store I work in had collapsed, and people said two had been hit.”

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that the death toll reached 62 and hundreds were injured. More than 5,000 people are being evacuated.

Twenty-five people were still stuck buried in the debris in Cijedil village, said agency spokesman Abdul Muhari.

Several landslides closed roads around the Cianjur district. Among the dozens of buildings that were damaged was an Islamic boarding school, a hospital and other public facilities, the agency said. Power outages were reported.

Ridwan Kamil, West Java governor, said that the local government, national police and Indonesian military were still gathering information.

“Because Cianjur is characterized by many places that are very remote, so we need that data to determine the situation,” Kamil said.

Most of the victims and survivors were taken to the government hospital in Cianjur.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency recorded at least 25 aftershocks.

“The quake felt so strong. My colleagues and I decided to get out of our office on the ninth floor using the emergency stairs,” said Vidi Primadhania, a worked in the capital, where many residents ran into the streets and others hid under desks.

The country of more than 270 million people is frequently struck by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In February, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed at least 25 people and injured more than 460 in West Sumatra province. In January 2021, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed more than 100 people and injured nearly 6,500 in West Sulawesi province.

A powerful Indian Ocean quake and tsunami in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia.

Raheem Sterling helps England rout Iran 6-2 at World Cup Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

When Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford last walked off the field at a major international soccer tournament, they were bombarded with racist abuse.

Three goals for England in the team’s opening match at this year’s World Cup was their immediate riposte.

Saka scored two before giving way to Rashford, who added another in the second half of England’s 6-2 rout of Iran on Monday.

The jubilant scene at the Khalifa International Stadium was in contrast to the tears shed following England’s penalty shootout loss to Italy in last year’s European Championship final. Saka and Rashford both failed to convert from the spot and were targeted on social media.

“It is a moment that has been with me and will be with me forever,” said Saka, who was only 19 during Euro 2020. “But I am so blessed and so grateful to have the coaching staff, not only here with the team at England, but also at Arsenal.

“My friends and my family put their arm around me along with my teammates and the nation supported me to help me get back to a good place. I feel that love from everyone around me.”

The win also provides encouragement for coach Gareth Southgate, who has faced the most troubled period of his England tenure over the last year. In a difficult buildup to the tournament in Qatar, he was booed after a 4-0 loss to Hungary in June and was humiliated by his own fans when they chanted, “You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Hundreds of fans missed the start of Monday’s match because of an issue with digital tickets. When they eventually made their way to their seats, they witnessed an utterly dominant display from England.

Jude Bellingham’s first international goal opened the scoring in the 35th minute.

Saka then got his first of the match in the 43rd and Jamaican Raheem Sterling added another in first-half stoppage time. Saka scored his second shortly after the hour, but Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran in the 65th minute.

Rashford struck six minutes later to extend England’s lead to 5-1, and Jack Grealish also stepped off the bench to score a sixth in the 90th. Taremi added another for Iran from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time after John Stones was penalized for holding Morteza Pouraliganji’s shirt in the box.

The game was delayed for several minutes in the first half when Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand clashed heads with a teammate. He was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher with the score still 0-0.

His replacement, Hossein Hosseini, was left with the unenviable task of facing England’s potent attack.

The match had a total of 29 minutes of stoppage time, 15 minutes in the first half and 14 in the second.

After the match, Iran coach Carlos Queiroz pleaded with fans to support the team following apparent boos during the national anthem amid protests in the nation for women’s rights.

“All the Iranians in the stadium are welcome, and feel free to criticise,” he said. “Those who come to disturb the team with issues that are not only about football opinions are not welcome. They are just simple football boys. They have one dream, to play football. It is not their fault that the World Cup happens at the moment.

The moral is: Let the kids play the game. They want to represent the country, represent the people.”

Brilliant BellinghamBellingham had not even made his senior debut by the time of the last World Cup in 2018. Now the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is one of the most coveted players in Europe and is expected to spark a major transfer battle at the end of the season. Monday’s performance is likely to see his reputation grow even more.

Kane’s okaySouthgate said Harry Kane was not injured despite concerns when he went down under a challenge in the second half and was later substituted.”I think Harry is fine,” the coach said. “It looked a bad tackle, but he carried on and we took him off because we thought it was a moment when we could do that.”
