Exxon-led group to develop fifth major oilfield off Guyana

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tues. Jan. 10, 2023: A consortium led by Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) will develop a fifth major oilfield in the prolific Stabroek Block off the coast of Guyana at an estimated cost of $12.7B, Guyana’s government said Tuesday.

The Uaru-Mako project currently under review could come onstream in the next three years, adding as many as 63 more wells to the 30 already drilled in the block by the group, which also includes Hess (NYSE:HES) and China’s CNOOC (OTCPK:CEOHF).

Releasing the field’s specifications for public review, Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency said Uaru-Mako has at least 1.3B barrels of crude to add to the 10B-plus barrels in recoverable reserves the consortium has estimated so far.

According to the deal terms, the consortium will pay up-front development costs and recover 75% when revenues roll in; Exxon (XOM) will receive additional revenues equivalent to another 12.5% of the cost, and Guyana will collect the final 12.5%, or ~$1.6B, as well as a 2% royalty on any revenues thereafter.

Jah Cure Returns To Court In Netherlands On January 24

The Prosecution in Jah Cure’s stabbing case has appealed the court’s ruling that the Reggae artist be acquitted on the attempted murder charge, and a date has been set for a hearing.

Jah Cure was convicted on March 22 on the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter in a judges-only trial after several damning voice notes and text messages were entered into evidence by prosecutors. In the voice notes, Jah Cure had expressed that he would kill the promoter over money owed to him.

Jah Cure, real name Siccaturie Alcock, was sentenced to six years in prison for the attempted manslaughter charge, but the conviction was appealed by the country’s Public Prosecution Service, which wants Cure to be sentenced to eight years in jail for attempted murder.

On Tuesday, a pro forma hearing was set for January 24. The hearing, according to Jamaica Observer, will be to review the artist’s continued detention. The reggae singer has been in a European jail since his arrest in October 2021, for wounding a Jamaican born promoter in Amsterdam.

“The pro forma hearing is scheduled from 11:10 to 11:20 hrs. The decision usually follows the same day,” press officer of the public prosecution to the Court of Appeals, Tuscha Essed, told the Jamaican newspaper.

In the meantime, Jah Cure’s legal team has also appealed the sentence. His attorney filed an appeal last June to have the number of years reduced. The father of one had not addressed the stabbing incident until recently, when he issued an apology to his fans.

In an interview with the Jamaica Gleaner about his upcoming 11-track LP, Undeniable, the artist said, “my message to my fans is I apologize for this situation I get myself caught up in. I would like to give this album to you as a special gift from me to you.”

The upcoming LP would be his ninth studio album. Jah Cure is widely regarded as one of the greatest singers reggae music has ever seen, but his legal troubles since he was a teenager cast a cloud over his promising career.

If Dutch prosecutors have their way in court, the artist could spend close to a decade in prison.

Valiant Reflects On His Meteoric Rise To Stardom In “Bruk Days” Video

Valiant gets into a reflective mood in his new music video “Bruk Days.”

The clip is the first music video since the start of the year for the young dancehall artist who had a meteoric rise in dancehall last year thanks to his melodic and edgy style that gave birth to a slew of hits in the last quarter of the year. Valiant is undoubtedly among the top dancehall artist to watch in 2023 as he is poised for a major international push.

The Kinggcam-directed cut saw the Spanish Town deejay sitting on the beach in the night, looking out at sea. With a spliff in hand, Valiant dons a white button-down shirt, khaki pants, a baseball cap, and a pair of black Wallabee Clarks. The deejay is also famous for wearing some of the most unique Clarks kicks in the game.

“You should a bad mind me inna me bruk days/ Mommy house upstairs/ Me know she nah complain/ Yeah complain/ I’m glad I’m a driver I’m still a survivor/ A wull heap a fight when you arise/ But a prayer’s a fight back yes/ There is pain in my eye/ I’m still reading my smile/ I know them yah heart dirty and it hurt me,” Valiant rhymes over a catchy beat produced by Sponge Music.

In another segment of the music video, Valiant associates delivered to him a Louis Vuitton bag full of cash, which he counted after enjoying some refreshments and hanging with his crew outside.

In an interview with Urban Islandz last year, Valiant shares his plans to grow his career and push dancehall internationally.

“Being a dancehall artist, I want to get dancehall music more recognized globally meaning on every chart and in every corner of the world. A lot [of] new artists inspire me to keep consistent and bring our new form of dancehall music called trap dancehall to the world at large,” the deejay told us.
