Tems won her first NAACP Image award on Monday night for her cover of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” featured on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. The song won the award for Outstanding International Song category at the 54th annual NAACP Image Awards.

The Image Awards presented by the NAACP recognizes the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in 80 competitive categories, including film, television, streaming, music, literature, and podcasts.

Along with Tems, Shenseea was also nominated in the Outstanding International Song category for “Diana” along with “Bad To Me” by Wizkid (RCA Records/Starboy/Sony Music International), “Last Last” by Burna Boy (Atlantic Records), and “Stand Strong” by Davido featuring Sunday Service Choir (RCA Records/Sony Music UK).

Meanwhile, Rihanna has also announced the winner of the Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album category for her song “Lift Me Up,” which was one of two soundtracks she recorded to be used as soundtracks for the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever released late last year.

In the meantime, the NAACP Image Awards will continue to announce the winners for the non-televised categories throughout this week, leading to the final live ceremony on Saturday, February 25, on BET from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California.

Tem’s cover of “No Woman No Cry” was released in July 2022 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. The track spent almost a dozen weeks on the US Afrobeats Songs Chart, peaking at No. 7 and also peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard US Digital Song Sales chart.

The original “No Woman No Cry” was co-produced by Bob Marley, Chris Blackwell, and Steve Smith and released on the legendary reggae artist’s 1974 album ‘Natty Dread.’

Rolling Stone ranked Marley’s live version of the track as the No. 37 Greatest Songs of All Time, particularly for its themes that spoke to the economic and other oppressive circumstances that women faced in Jamaica in the 1970s that resonated with the hardships women faced across the world.

Black Immigrant Daily News

Nicki Minaj says she is heading to Jamaica Carnival 2023 next after creating waves in Trinidad this week. The “Super Freaky Girl” rapper is also showing Foota Hype love.

Yesterday, the rap veteran stopped by Instagram to give Foota Hype a shout out where she called him “mi general.” Foota quickly responded saying, “happy to see you back in full effect queen I’m reviewing your new song tomorrow a chubble lol.”

Nicki Minaj then revealed that Trinidad isn’t the only carnival that she is planning to attend, but also has her eyes set on Jamaica. “[Foota Hype] need you to go brazy when you playing it,” she said. “We need @ next Trini carnival and I’m going to JA carnival.”

Nicki Minaj is showing major love for her birth country Trinidad as she celebrated Carnival Monday in the twin island republic with some of the stalwarts of soca music.

The artist says in a new clip that she will be repping her “real flag” after years of not only repping Jamaica but also enjoying the sounds and mimicking the language of Jamaican people as well as their music.

Nicki Minaj’s embracing of Jamaican culture and people has led to many conflicts with her own countrymen who publicly bash her for not promoting Trinidad more, although Minaj grew up in the United States and has been influenced by the Jamaican diaspora community, including her ex-boyfriend Safaree Samuels.

Nicki Minaj

The artist has been on the island following her “Shake The Place (Remix)” collaboration with Machel Montano and Destra Garcia, released ahead of Carnival week. This is her second public appearance since last July at her Essence Festival performance in Louisiana and a few firsts since she gave birth in 2020 and took a break from the music scene.

On Monday night, Minaj shared several photos and videos of herself enjoying Carnival Monday, including her sexy outfit, which included short shorts, heels, and a bustier style top that accentuated her large breasts.

The rapper also shared a message on her Instagram account, which is bound to stir up a little island rivalry.

“Legendary footage with the greats of my country. I couldn’t be more proud if I tried. I reppin dat red dat white dat black I reppin my real flag,” Minaj said.

She added a sentimental note as she shared that embracing her culture and heritage was important to her late family members.

“Wish my grandmother was alive to see. Wish daddy was alive to see this. See you tmrw, Trinidad,” Minaj hinted at Carnival Tuesday festivities that will likely bless her fans with her costume look.

In the video shared on her Instagram, Minaj said- “Queen things, king things that’s all that comes out of Trinidad.”

Nicki Minaj also shared that she was at peace being at home where her ancestors rested.

“My spirit is soaring. Thank you for noticing. Great ppl around me, too but that glow/happiness is coming from inside. From God. Gratitude,” she responded to a fan.

T.I. Says He Made Up Story About Snitching On Dead Cousin For ‘Humor’

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Rapper T.I. is backtracking from his previous comments that he bargained with the feds for his freedom by selling out his dead cousin. After being called a snitch by the likes of Boosie Badazz, the rapper now says it was all a joke, and he didn’t expect it to be blown out of proportion, especially after his long-time friend called off the release of their joint album.

T.I. recently made the comments on his brand new podcast where he was talking about an incident when he was a youth who got caught up with the law along with his cousin. He claims that his cousin told him to pin a gun charge on him so that Tip could escape jail time.

Many people like Boosie felt that if the story was true, T.I. was no better than any other snitch. Boosie also shared in a Vlad Interview that the rapper had never mentioned anything like that during their decades-long friendship. He believed he did it to get podcast views rather than the incident being real and T.I. being a “truthteller.”

T.I., however, says he had embellished the story.

“It came off a conversation I was having with my patna and I were having and that conversation was ‘hey bruh if me and you catch a case together and I die before you, it’s mine’… off of that conversation, I created a set of circumstances and I thought that the embellishment was clear when I said that I talked to my cousin and he told [he was ok,’” T.I. said to Richard Benjamin from Trapper of the Trap News Network.

The rapper added, “humor, satire and sarcasm, it escapes them,” and said that he understands the outrage even though he was pushing the boundaries of the narrative.

“I can offer some alternative perspectives to the way things are being viewed by the majority… open up the conversation about taboo topics. Free thinking,” T.I. said.

TIP added about the story, “it came from a very real place but I added embellishment to it to fit the needed discussion.”

The Atlanta rapper was asked about the court case and said that it was eventually dismissed due to the suppression of evidence after it was discovered that the police conducted an illegal search and seizure and even offered to show paperwork to prove he did not snitch on his cousin.

TIP was dragged by Boosie earlier this week as he became impassioned as he said that his joint album with the rapper is off since his uncle and other friends and family warned him not to associate with Tip. In an Instagram response, T.I. hit back at Boosie who he said could have called his phone rather than go on Vlad and blast him.

“To get on da net & speak on shi*t you’ve never spoke to me about is leaving me to believe you been hiding ya heart the whole time!!!! I’d NEVER speak “certain disrespect” on your name/reputation bout a “IF” homie,” he said.

Tommie Lee Apologize To Chris Brown For Comments About His Son & Ammika Harris

Black Immigrant Daily News

Reality star Tommie Lee is apologizing to Chris Brown and the mother of his son Ammika Harris after she got into a drunken rage after she attempted to play with the child over the weekend.

Lee faced backlash due to her rude comments and insults about the artist’s son, whom she called “slow” and an “albino,” after Harris prevented her from touching or playing with the child seen backstage at a recent Chris Brown concert.

The reality star’s main page on Instagram was deleted after Chris Brown fans reported her account for bullying. It seems that Zeus Network also distanced itself from her after Natalie Nunn and Baddies star Rollie called her out for the rude behavior.

While at a press conference promoting an upcoming fight on the Zeus network between herself and Nunn, Tommie Lee apologized to Brown and his family and explained the situation as just “friendly sport.”

“I want to start off by addressing the elephant in the room. I want to start off by saying I love the children,” she said. “Last night in defense mode…I want to apologize to Chris Brown and his baby mother because it’s not my character. It started off as the, you know, friendly sport of it. It got real, it happened. We all human and I’m just here to knock this ***** out at this point.”

On Tuesday night, Tommie Lee went off on Instagram Live after she was called out for blowing up on Harris, who reportedly stopped Tommie from touching and playing with her child. The reality star accused her of closing a door in her face, although many fans felt that Tommie was out of line for trying to touch someone’s child uninvited.

To make matters worse, she did not apologize or accept accountability and instead went on to bash Chris, Harris, and even the innocent child.

“I don’t care about your baby. F*ck your baby,” she continued. “And f*ck his daddy, too. The f*ck? Really. Like, girl. I ain’t pressed ’bout no motherf*ckin baby. F*ck him. All y’all look albino as f*ck,” she ranted.

Chris Brown has not reacted to the incident since.

Nipsey Hussle’s Convicted Killer Given 60-Year Prison Sentence

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

The man who shot and killed California rapper Nipsey Hussle in cold blood and left him to die in front of the store he opened to help the community has been sentenced to life in prison.

Eric R. Holder Jr. will have to serve 60 years in jail before he is eligible for parole. A judge handed down the hefty sentence more than three years since he shot and killed the rapper in a rage over allegations that he was an informant. According to the LA Times, Holder was sentenced to 25 years to life on the first-degree count, an additional 25 years to life for a sentencing enhancement since a gun was used, and 10 years for the shooting of the innocent bystanders.

Holder Jr. was found guilty by a jury last year of the first-degree murder of the hip-hop artist, but his sentencing was put off until this month. Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed down the of-delayed sentence to Eric Holder Jr., who is only 33 years old.

Along with being found guilty of first-degree murder, Holder was also found guilty of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a firearm after shooting two innocent bystanders when he shot and killed Nipsey Hussle.

Judge Jacke’s sentence was handed down after Nipsey’s close friend Herman ‘Cowboy’ Douglas gave a victim impact statement in court, and a letter from Holder’s father read in court. Despite the lengthy sentence, the judge noted that Holder was not eligible for the death penalty.

Holder’s attorney Aaron Jansen had asked for Holder’s sentencing to be delayed as he moved to get his conviction reduced from first-degree murder to manslaughter or second-degree murder, which was rejected by Judge Jacke.

During the sentencing on Wednesday, Douglas told the court he was standing with Hussle when Holder killed him. Douglas shared that the rapper’s death left a deep void in the South Los Angeles community where Hussle had dedicated himself and his success to building up the community and creating opportunities for the youth.

“Nipsey was my friend, he was like a son, he was like a dad,” he said. “Our community right now, we lost everything, everything we worked for. One man’s mistake, one man’s action, messed up a whole community.”

He continued, “Our community right now, we lost everything. Everything we worked for. … thousands of jobs we don’t have no more. Homies don’t have nothing to do. They backsliding, they robbing people now,” Douglas said. “All our stores are closed down. The whole community relied on Nip.”Douglas also directly addressed the judge, “I don’t care what you give this guy. It ain’t about the time. I just want to know why. The world wants to know why. Why someone would do that?”

Douglas also broke out into song- “hit the road Jack” after Holder was sentenced, causing the judge and deputies to admonish him and send him out of the room.

Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, had grown up with Holder, and the two were also aspiring rappers, but only Nipsey Hussle became successful. Evidence led by the prosecution claimed that Holder shot the rapper about a dozen times, with one shot ripping through his spine. Had he survived, he would have been disabled.

Holder’s attorney had stated that his client did kill the rapper but said that a lesser verdict of voluntary manslaughter was appropriate since Holder reacted in the heat of passion and shot the rapper.

Jansen says his client planned to appeal the verdict.

Quavo Hops On Reggae Beat In Takeoff Tribute “Greatness” Disses Offset

Black Immigrant Daily News

Quavo hops on a reggae beat in his new song “Greatness” a tribute to Takeoff.

The Migos rapper is still mourning the loss of his nephew, Takeoff, and is releasing a new tribute on Wednesday to honor the late rapper. On Wednesday night, Quavo announced the track, which appears to be produced by DJ Khaled. “Countdown To Greatness #ForTake,” he tweeted with the rocket emoji.

The Chris Dvon-directed video starts with Quavo at an undisclosed location seemingly like his home, watching home videos of himself and Takeoff. The clip then transitioned into the Atlanta rapper showing off his expensive jewelry collection and exotic cars.

“My chain, my watch, my wrist/ My mother****in’ house, my rise and grind/ I’d give it all away just to see my dawg just one more time/ Look up at the lights one time,” he raps while blowing smoke.

Quavo dissing Offset on “Greatness”?

In one verse, Quavo seemingly takes aim at Offset amid recent tension with his former Migos group member at the Grammys. “I’mma make sure Mama straight/ Especially Mama and Take/ I can’t kick it with a fake (Nah)/ And I won’t sleep with the snakes (Snakes!),” he raps over a reggae flavored beat

This is Quavo’s second tribute to Takeoff, having released the song “Without You” last month. He also performed the song at the 65th annual Grammy Awards for the In Memoriam segment dedicated to the creatives who passed away this year. The rapper became emotional in the song, rapping, “Tears rolling down my eyes / I just seen an angel fly.”

Quavo was present when Takeoff was shot and killed on November 1 in Houston, Texas. At the time, he and Takeoff had just set out on their solo journey as ‘Unc & Phew’ following the reported breakup of the Migos.

“Greatness” was released at 10 PM on Wednesday night.

Fans of Quavo also reacted to the song, with many sympathizing with the rapper on the loss of his nephew.

“Already going to be fire and we all are here for you and long live the rocket man,” another said.

“Takeoff will always be remembered. Never forgotten. We are missing Take along with you. Wishing you moments of peace and comfort,” another said.

Some also called for the rapper to make peace with his cousin Offset as the fracture to their relationship appears to have widened.

“Please make up with @OffsetYRN. You 2 need to be holding it down for Take please,” one person said.

One man, Patrick Clarke, has been charged with the murder of Takeoff. He is currently on bond. No other arrests have been made, but the police are investigating.

Guyanese fisherman sentenced to 25 years for killing captain

Black Immigrant Daily News

A High Court judge has sentenced two fishermen to 25 years in jail after they were pleaded guilty of manslaughter in the death of boat captain, Mahadeo Ramdehol, during a piracy attack in 2017

Justice Navindra Singh on Monday imposed the sentence on Doodnauth Singh, 63, and Khemraj Narsayah, 44, who appeared at the Berbice High Court last month charged with murdering the boat captain, but opted to plead guilty to the latter count of manslaughter.

The men admitted that on May 16, 2017, in the river between Tain Village and Rose Hall on the Corentyne foreshore, they killed the 57-year-old boat captain during the act of piracy.

As he was being sentenced Singh urged the judge to “give me a second chance,” while Narsayah who apologised to the family, said he did not expect for “them things to happen”.

Earlier, the victim’s family had given impact statements to the court calling for justice to be served.

The judge said while he considered the nature of the case, he was sentencing the men to 25 years imprisonment with time served on remand to be deducted.

The court heard that on May 16, 2017, the convicted men, armed with a cutlass, went out into the Corentyne River, where they attacked the boat captain, and his two crewmen, Arjun Permaul and Parmanand Nandan.

After relieving the victims of some fish and their outboard engine, they chopped Ramdehol on the head with a cutlass and forced the victims to jump overboard.

Ramdehol’s body was found the following day near the Rose Hall foreshore. A post-mortem revealed that he had drowned.

Our intertwined health: mangroves and communities for a sustainable future

Black Immigrant Daily News

Mangroves are in decline globally, with mangrove forest cover decreasing by over 1 million hectares worldwide in the past two decades. But in the Caribbean things are different: in this part of the world, mangrove cover actually expanded over the period 2000 to 2015.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Sub-Regional Office for the Caribbean organized a webinar on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day 2023 on January 26th. Foresters and resource managers from the region shared mangrove management good practices that have contributed to this exceptional trend. The webinar was an activity of the programme Building Capacity related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements in African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries, funded by the European Union.

The forty-eight (48) participants heard first from Vincent ‘Jeg’ Clarke, a local conservation leader from the community of Vieux Fort in Saint Lucia. For more than three decades, Mr Clarke has been actively involved in the management of the Mank?t? Mangrove, designated under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Importance.

Clarke’s presentation emphasized that collaborative management of mangroves must empower communities to take collective ownership of the resource, build their capacity to manage the ecosystem sustainably, and find the balance between community livelihoods and ecosystem health. In this way, it is possible to maintain, as Mr Clarke put it, “long time benefits for people to come.”

Traditionally, the mangrove in Saint Lucia was used for charcoal production. Mr Clarke shared the story of a mother and father who were able to put their eleven children through school using their income from making and selling charcoal. For families in the community, he says, “The Mank?t? mangrove [tells] a livelihoods story.”

Once it became clear that harvesting mangrove trees to make charcoal was exacerbating the pressures on the ecosystem, the community took action to diversify their traditional livelihoods by adopting new income generating activities, including mangrove tours and sea moss farming and, most recently, beekeeping. The beekeeping has been particularly successful: it has produced an award-winning mangrove honey, and the presence of pollinators in the mangrove has been noticeably beneficial for ecosystem flourishing. Additionally, the community has established a mangrove nursery and is working with national partners to replant and restore the Mank?t? mangrove.

The sustainable practices that have been pioneered in Saint Lucia through Mr Clarke’s work with the Aupicon Charcoal Producers group and the Iyanola Apiculture Collective are also being explored in Tanzania, with support from ACP MEAs 3.

Vincent Sima, Principal Conservation Officer with the Tanzania Forest Service, explained how the Forest Service is working with village councils in the Kigamboni district to replant mangroves and promote sustainable fuel wood harvesting, ecotourism, and apiculture. So far, two hectares of degraded mangrove forest in Kigamboni have been replanted using a participatory forestry approach.

FAO’s Regional Forest Officer for the Caribbean, Claus Eckelmann, reminded webinar participants of the multiple benefits of healthy mangroves: in addition to supporting livelihoods, mangroves are important biodiversity habitats, and help protect communities from the effects of extreme weather. To fully realize these benefits, he added, “The personal linkage with the resource is a very important aspect of community management, and one of the cornerstones of sustainability.”

The webinar’s key takeaway was neatly summed up by Jason Gordon, Director of Forest Resource Assessment with the Jamaica Forestry Department: “When stakeholders have a vested interest in the longevity of the forest, they tend to take better care of it. Families who depend on the mangroves realize that they have to protect it for their livelihoods over successive generations.”

Antigua Government monitoring deportation issue involving West Africans in Trinidad

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Caribbean News Service

The Antigua and Barbuda government is monitoring a High Court case in Trinidad and Tobago where a judge has temporarily blocked the Immigration Department from deporting five Cameroonians who arrived last November after fleeing their homeland, fearing they would be killed by military forces.

Last week Tuesday, Justice Carol Gobin granted the application to the lawyers representing the Africans less than four hours before they were to be placed on a flight to Panama and then back to Cameroon.

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, delivering the traditional Throne speech at the opening of the new Parliament following the January 18 general election, said the Gaston Browne administration, which is dealing with a similar situation where hundreds of people from Cameron are stranded, is aware of the High Court ruling in Port of Spain.

“My government notes with interest, the decision of the High Court in Trinidad and Tobago less than a week ago to prevent the Trinidad and Tobago government from deporting the West Africans back to their homeland.

“My government further notes that the UNHCR, (UN Refugee Agency) played a significant role in stopping the deportations. My government is required to take the High Court decision into consideration and to the role of the UNHCR prior to making its final decision,” Sir Rodney said.

Earlier this month, following the weekly Cabinet meeting, Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters the government had decided while West Africans will not be afforded Antiguan and Barbudan citizenship, those who choose to remain could be offered residency and work permits.

The government had previously announced that the hundreds of Africans who arrived in the country on charter flights in recent months would be allowed to remain.

“Antiguan passport? No…I don’t think that that is on the cards, but certainly the whole idea of residency and work permits, that is part of the legal framework that we are considering,” Nicholas told the media.

Nicholas said the Immigration Department had been tasked with tracking down and investigating just how many of the Africans would like to be repatriated – as the government has also offered – or remain in the country. But, according to Nicholas, Cabinet has yet to receive an update.

He did however say for those who wish to stay, government will be looking at various options to ensure they do so legally while contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Government had earlier this month said 637 of the more than 900 people who touched down between November and January remained in Antigua. Many of them are Cameroonians fleeing a bloody conflict back home.

The main opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) called for a Commission of Inquiry to determine if the authorities are engaged in human trafficking after supporters staged protest action against the government’s decision to legalize the status of hundreds of African migrants.
