All forms of treatment for prostate cancer can have an impact on erectile function, but Consultant Urologist Dr Gareth Reid says the vast majority of men can have a sex life after treatment.
Pointing out that losing their sexual function is one of the big fears among men in Jamaica, Dr Reid said the majority of men who have prostate cancer detected and treated early will have the return of sexual function.
Check out this week’s Talking Health in 5, which takes a closer look at the condition that is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican men, as Dr Reid dispels some myths surrounding prostate cancer.

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has indicated his concern for the Cuban people in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
“My thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Cuba as they recover from the devastation brought on by the passage of Hurricane Ian,” the former Prime Minister wrote on Facebook.
The BBC said two people were reported dead, and buildings were damaged nationwide after the storm’s passage.
According to the BBC, power has been restored in parts of Cuba after Ian battered the Western part of the island and caused a total blackout.

After dumping twelve inches of rain on Cuba, Ian grew into an ‘extremely dangerous’ Category 4 storm that made landfall along the South Western coast of Florida on Wednesday.

Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned to be wary of high waters when travelling in the vicinity of Holetown.
These words of warning were issued this afternoon by the director of the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) Sabu Best.
The flash flood warning for western districts of Barbados has been extended to include parts of St Thomas, St Andrew, St Joseph, St John and possible heavy downpours in St George.
Best reported four inches of rainfall in Holetown, with three inches more inland. Residents can expect elevated water in the Holetown area into the night, he stated.
“There will be heavy elevated areas of water in roads, fields and drains may be covered or blocked with excessive water. Be very careful when you commute this evening and be vigilant. These waters will slowly subside, however, due to the heavy rainfall occurring in the centre parts of the island, we expect run off in the higher elevations in the same watershed to run off into the Holetown area which may cause or slow down the drainage,” said the Met Office director.
Best urged motorists to find alternative routes if a road is blocked due to the rushing or high waters.
“If you see water rushing across the road, please do not drive through it, find an alternative route. In addition, if the water seems deep or you are uncertain do not, I repeat, do not drive through the water,” he stated.
The weather conditions are expected to persist into the afternoon, with one to three inches of rainfall in the central parts of Barbados. Christ Church and St Philip will not be impacted.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is today stressing that “the world is becoming a very inhospitable place” and stands by the judgement calls that this government of Barbados has had to make “as to what we do”.

On the heels of returning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to enter into another programme, she today (September 28) at Ilaro Court shared after the IMF visit, that Barbados will go into talks with the World Bank next.
She said, “The reality is that our work with the International Monetary Fund will make our work also easier with other institutions that provide concessional funding.”
Giving examples she went on to say, “Whether it is with the Latin American Development Bank, otherwise known as the CAF, whether it is the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)” or the World Bank and “I go into discussions with the World Bank shortly.”

PM Mottley justified taking these steps saying, “When people think they have reached that point of safety…BAM! Something can happen and everything is exploded, and therefore, what we do today is to make an interpretation of the environment in which we are functioning and to determine the best way to treat to this environment is to not only have to meet the overcast nature of the global economy and the occasional thunderstorms and hurricanes it is presenting but the best way to meet those circumstances is to make sure that we have a raincoat, an umbrella, boots and any other type of equipment necessary to protect the 300,000 or odd souls that inhabit these 166 squared miles.”
And she said that considering the most recent rating and outlook from S&P Global Ratings (formerly Standard and Poor’s or S&P) for the country, she is confident that this Administration is taking the right step for this country.
“Standard and Poor’s gave us the same rating, held our rating at a time when they have downgraded many, many others, but above all else is, more warming is that they gave us a stable outlook. To have a stable outlook as a small developing country coming out of an IMF programme at a time when the world is facing triple crises is in truth and in fact, a statement of encouragement and confidence.
“[It is] Not a statement that will cause us to become complacent; not a statement that would cause us to rest on our achievements. But one that would give us encouragement that the direction in which we are moving is the right direction.”

Les autorités ont communiqué les chiffres de la situation sanitaire liés à la propagation du COVID 19. Selon l’Agence Régionale de Santé, 449 nouveaux cas ont été recensés contre 582 la semaine dernière. La prédominance du sous-lignage BA.5 d’omicron se poursuit.
Ce mercredi (28 septembre), les autorités ont communiqué par voie de communiqué de presse les nouveaux chiffres de contamination à la Covid-19.
Les contaminations
Du 19 au 25 septembre 2022, le nombre de nouveaux cas positifs dépistés sur le territoire a diminué.Il est de 449 nouveaux cas positifs dépistés sur le territoire contre 589 la semaine dernière.Depuis le mois de Juin, une co-circulation des sous-lignages BA.2, BA.4 et BA.5 du variant Omicron est observée sur l’archipel avec une prédominance de BA.5Le taux de positivité est de 13,9 % .Le R effectif est de 0,81.Deux clusters en cours de suivi ont été déclarés1 homme de 89 ans est décédé.
Les hospitalisations
Le 27 septembre:- 15 patients adultes COVID sont hospitalisés en médecine conventionnelle (stable).- 32 patients sont hospitalisés en réanimation : 5 se trouvent en réa COVID dont 3 au CHUG et 2 auCHBT ; 27 sont hospitalisés en réa non COVID (soit 3 au CHBT et 24 au CHUG).- 43 se trouvent sous oxygène à domicile (baisse).
La vaccination
Au 27 septembre, on comptait 392 823 injections de:- 1ère dose : 46,10 %- 2ème dose : 43,99 %- 3ème dose : 26,65 %8 543 adolescents de 12 à 17 ans ont reçu la 1ère injection et 8 113 ont reçu la 2ème injection à ce jour en Guadeloupe.295 premières doses de vaccination et 229 deuxièmes doses ont été enregistrées en Guadeloupe chez les enfants de 5 à 11 ans.354 premières doses de Novavax et 196 deuxièmes doses réalisées.
Recommandations de la préfecture
Face à la circulation virale toujours très active, la Préfecture de Guadeloupe tient à faire quelques rappels:
-Il est fortement recommandé de maintenir les gestes barrières et de porter un masque en particulier pour les personnes fragiles et vulnérables. Cette recommandation vaut également pour tous dans les lieux clos où la concentration de personnes est importante et lors de grands rassemblements, y compris en plein air ;
-S’isoler en cas de signes évocateurs de l’infection et se faire tester au moindre doute que l’on soit asymptomatique ou cas contact. Les personnes fragiles doivent continuer à se protéger.

A man was shot dead and a woman was injured at a bar in Westmoreland as the ongoing shooting spree continued in the parish on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Edward Moseley, otherwise called ‘Eddie’, of Red Ground district in Negril, Westmoreland.
Reports are that about 10:30 pm, Mosley and the woman were among patrons at a bar along Norman Manley Boulevard in Negril, when a lone gunman entered and opened fire, hitting him and the woman.
The police were alerted and the injured persons were taken to hospital, where Moseley was pronounced dead on arrival and the woman was admitted for treatment.
The Westmoreland police are investigating the incident.

PM Mottley admits Barbados should be concerned about pound devaluation Loop Barbados

With the value of the British pound falling to historic lows against the US dollar these days, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says that this downward trend should spur Barbados to pivot and tweak the tourism product to attract new interests.
Speaking at today’s wrap-up of the International Monetary Fund visit press conference at Ilaro Court, she said that one of “our largest trading partners [Great Britain] is facing devaluation on a fairly rapid basis, so much so that you [the media] have asked me what I believe are the consequences for the Barbados economy given that the British account for 40 per cent of our tourism sector, and it is a matter for which we should have concern.”
She said we have to keep an eye on the ball and play strategic shots right now “including boosting our presence in other markets if necessary if we see a diminution in spending”.
However, PM Mottley hinted that the current impact may not be the most worrisome yet because, according to her, “We do have perhaps… a slightly different demographic coming here” as it relates to the type of visitors we get from that source market.
But she still asserted, “there is no doubt that everybody will be hurting and therefore we have to be prepared to open up and boost other markets to potentially offset what could happen there.”
PM Mottley said that at the groundbreaking for Hotel Indigo yesterday she told the attendees, “…That is an analogy for really and truly where we are, that we’ve taken a site that had two of Barbados’ certainly one of Barbados’ oldest hotels in Barbados south coast – Ocean View, and one of the other more mature hotels – Caribbee, and that that site is now being repurposed to serve a modern Barbados tourism sector.”
And she stressed that Bajans still must play their part in keeping our economy alive because COVID should have taught us that we cannot rely on foreigners coming to our shores and spending to drive our economic growth solely.
“We must not have amnesia in this environment and we must not believe the extent to which we have been able to insulate people means that all is well in the rest of the world. It is not. And I ask us to recall that what has brought us thus safely thus far is us operating as a single nation, with a social partnership anchored as the basis upon which many of the decisions we have taken.”
