Director of Hazard Management Danielle Coleman says the public should continue to take seriously the threat of now Hurricane Ian as it passes by the Cayman Islands in the next few hours.

“We are really, really pleased with the response from the Cayman Islands public.

“They have obviously heeded the warning and taken the threat seriously and we really strongly continue to encourage you all to continue to do so but we are very, very grateful for your cooperation,” Coleman says.

She says there’s still the possibility of flooding from the system.

According to Coleman, 70 people are without power in both Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands and 160 persons are in shelters across the three islands.

Coleman says there were also some challenges with the transportation of medical supplies last evening.

Some schools in Kingston also closing doors as heavy rains continue Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Several schools in Kingston and St Andrew added to the list of educational institutions that officials have decided to keep close on Monday as heavy rains continue to lash sections of the island.

Ministry of Education and Youth in a release over the weekend had advised that students in the eastern parishes of St Thomas, Portland, and St Mary which makes up Region 2, should remain at home on Monday, September 26.

But while no official release was sent out for those schools in Kingston and St Andrew, officials at several Kingston schools say they have been monitoring the weather conditions and informing parents via their own Whatsapp groups to stay home as heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Ian continue to affect a number of areas.

Vauxhall High School in Kingston was one of those institutions.

“Due to continuous rain which has caused flooding in some communities please be advised that we will not have face-to-face classes today, Monday, September 26,” school officials posted via their WhatsApp group.

The school officials said they will assignments using their online platforms.

Students attending grade six classes in Pembroke Hall primary were given similar instructions and there are indications that teachers in other classes may follow.

In a statement Sunday evening, the ministry said the report from Region 2 indicates that based on the adverse weather conditions which disrupted electricity, worsened road conditions and caused flooding in some areas, students should remain at home and work remotely as previously advised in Bulletin-133/2022, entitled “Severe Weather Alert.”

The ministry said that while reports from Region 5 (St. Elizabeth and Manchester) do not indicate significant cause for concern, school boards and principals are advised to make use of both remote learning and only use face-to-face where conditions allow.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that based on the situational update from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management and the Meteorological Office, schools can open for face-to-face classes where conditions are safe.

“Based on reports from our seven regions as to the impact of the weather conditions in their locality, boards and principals are being advised to exercise caution in determining the operations of schools for Monday, September 26,” the statement said.

It urged school administrators to use their communication channels to communicate with all parents, students and staff to advise of the operations of schools based on their local situation.

“All staff and parents should exercise their best judgement, paying special attention to self-care and safety in all circumstances,” the

Lovell expresses confidence in Sunwing International’s takeover of Halcyon since investor was introduced by UPP Gov’t

The Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) says that Sunwing International’s  takeover of the Halcyon Hotel property is a positive move that could provide much-needed jobs for local residents.

The Cabinet announced last week that the investor, Steven Hunter, is planning on turning the now-rundown property into a world-renowned five-star resort.

Reports are that the north wing of the old Halcyon Hotel has been demolished, making way for 250 new rooms during the first phase of the reconstruction.

Harold Lovell, who was a former minister of tourism, says the UPP welcomes any realistic project – since the Gaston Browne Administration has brought very few performing investors to the table.

However, he is optimistic that this project will get off the ground, since the principal of Sunwing International was brought to Antigua and Barbuda by the UPP Government.

Lovell says that a UPP Administration will continue to attract reputable investors, so that the economy can rebound while providing meaningful employment for residents.

Meanwhile, UPP Senator Damani Tabor is also expressing optimism that Sunwing International will succeed with this project – again, because the investor was initially sourced by the Baldwin Spencer Administration.

The second phase of the development will see bungalows being built on the hillsides above the hotel. Both construction phases will employ more than 450 workers, and each is expected to last more than two years.

Halcyon opened its doors to visitors around 1960 – some 62 years ago – and was then called the Caribbean Beach Club (CBC).

A gunman has opened fire at a school in central Russia, killing at least 13 people and injuring 21, Russian officials say.

Victims include seven children at the school of about 1,000 pupils in the city of Izhevsk.

The gunman killed himself at the scene. He was a former pupil of the school.

Russian media have posted videos which appear to show panic inside the building where the shooting took place.

Seven children and six adults were killed, including two security guards and two teachers, according to Russian officials. Staff and pupils have been evacuated from the school buildings.

One local MP said the attacker – named as Artem Kazantsev- had been armed with two pistols.

A video posted online by the investigative committee shows the gunman lying dead on the floor wearing a T-shirt with a Nazi symbol and a balaclava. Investigators are searching his place of residence.

A mourning period until 29 September has been announced by the head of the region. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson said he is “deeply mourning” the attack.

The school is in the centre of Izhevsk, a city of about 650,000 residents, close to central government buildings.

Rihanna to headline the next Super Bowl halftime show Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Rihanna will take center stage at February’s Super Bowl halftime show.

The singer, who declined to perform in the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show out of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, will headline the 2023 Super Bowl, the NFL announced Sunday, September 25, 2022, along with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Apple Music.

Rihanna posted an image on Instagram of an arm upstretched holding an NFL football.

“Rihanna is a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn,” said Jay-Z, whose Roc Nation is an executive producer of the show, in a statement.

“A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment.”

The Super Bowl will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12. After years of Pepsi’s sponsorship, the upcoming halftime show will be sponsored by Apple Music.

Rihanna earlier said she turned down a similar opportunity for the 2019 Super Bowl that was ultimately headlined by Maroon 5. At the time, many artists voiced support for Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who protested police brutality against Black people and minorities by kneeling during the national anthem in 2016.

“I couldn’t dare do that. For what?” Rihanna told Vogue in 2019. “Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organiastion that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way,” she said of the league.

Kaepernick accused the NFL of colluding to keep him out of the league in a case that was eventually settled in early 2019.

In 2019, the NFL partnered with Roc Nation (which manages Rihanna) to help pick performers for the Super Bowl and strategize on the halftime show. The widely acclaimed 2022 halftime show featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige.

With sales of more than 250 million records worldwide, Rihanna ranks as one of the best-selling female artists ever. Her last album was 2016’s “Anti.”

Rihanna last performed publicly at the Grammy Awards in 2018.

In the years since Rihanna has occasionally teased her music return.

Earlier this year, she had her first child with the rapper ASAP Rocky.
