THE People’s National Movement (PNM) held gala dinner at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, on Friday night as a fund-raising event. It was due to run from 7 pm to midnight.
It was titled, a September Affair, with the subtitle, Let the flowers bloom. Guests were asked to dress in formal wear in red, white or black.
PNM general secretary Foster Cummings told Newsday the ticket price was $1,500.
“It was a sold out event, very successful. We have a wide cross section of supporters from various sectors across the country. We are having a good time.”
On his Facebook page, Prime Minister Dr Rowley posted a photo of himself and his wife Sharon before they left for the gala. Rowley celebrated her birthday on Friday.
The dinner came ahead of Republic Day on Saturday. It also took place as TT culminated the month-long celebration of its 60th anniversary of Independence, the 1962 event which the party has attributed to its founder and the country’s first prime minister Dr Eric Williams, although this eminence was recently challenged by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar alleging the United Kingdom had been actively seeking to get rid of its colonies.
The dinner also comes after Dr Rowley recently launched the Dr Eric Williams Memorial Library, formerly the Heritage Library, at Knox Street, Port of Spain. The rebranded facility has been described as a library, archive and museum.
The media was not allowed to cover the September Affair, either inside the hotel or outside.

The Southern Minibus Association is mourning the death of one of its members, who succumbed on Friday after a collision involving his minibus and a panel van in Bexon.
Roger Joseph was among three individuals pronounced dead at the scene.
The others were an adult female identified as Shani Willie and an infant.
The President of the Southern Minibus Association, Marcellinus Faisal, has expressed his condolences to the friends and relatives of those who died.

And he told St Lucia Times that the deceased bus driver had been driving for over a decade.
“He was a model driver. He was one of our good drivers – always a cool and quiet guy,” Faisal recalled.
“He was one of our best drivers, and we are very sad to lose somebody like him on our bus stand,” Faisal stated.
He disclosed that there are plans to honour Joseph’s memory by, among other things, observing two minutes of silence on Monday.
Faisal declared that the deceased was a safe driver.
“You could ask the traveling public. He was not a reckless driver. He was a really good driver. I never had complaints about him from any passenger about him,” the Southern Minibus Association President told St Lucia Times.
Faisal disclosed that Roger Joseph used to drive a vehicle belonging to someone else but recently received a Route Band and bought his own minibus last year.
“It is very sad to know that the man just started, had his own vehicle and died like that,” he lamented.

Tropical Storm Hermine forms in Eastern Atlantic Loop Barbados

The eighth Atlantic named storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season has formed- Tropical Storm Hermine- adding to the various systems already being monitored in the region.
The US National Hurricane Center (US NHC) in its 5 pm update said Hermine was located about 290 miles North East of the Cabo Verde islands.
Some strengthening is possible through tomorrow, with weakening expected on Sunday, and Hermine could become a remnant low on Monday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the centre.
Hermine is forecast to produce 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 mm) of rain, with isolated totals of 6 inches (150 mm), over the Canary Islands through this weekend. This rainfall could cause some flash flooding in areas of higher terrain.

The government of the Cayman Islands has issued a Hurricane Watch for the Cayman Islands, including Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. The government of Jamaica has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Jamaica.
The NHC in its 5 pm update said Tropical Depression Nine was located about 430 miles ESE of Kingston, Jamaica and about 930 miles SE of Havana, Cuba.
A westward motion is expected to begin tonight and continue through Saturday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest and north-northwest on Sunday and Monday. On the forecast track, the centre of the cyclone is forecast to move across the central Caribbean Sea through Saturday, pass south of Jamaica on Saturday night and Sunday, and approach the Cayman Islands on Sunday night and early Monday.
Hurricane Fiona
A powerful Fiona is expected to bring Hurricane conditions to Atlantic Canada tonight. At 5 pm, Fiona was located about 370 miles SSE of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Fiona is moving toward the north-northeast near 40 mph (65 km/h). A slower north-northeast or northward motion is expected through Sunday. On the forecast track, the centre of Fiona will approach Nova Scotia later today, move across Nova Scotia and into the Gulf of St Lawrence on Saturday, and then across Labrador and over the Labrador Sea by late Sunday.
Tropical Storm Gaston
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Flores and Corvo in the western Azores, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira in the central Azores. On the forecast track, the centre of Gaston will move near or over portions of the Azores through early Saturday.

Charlene Goddard will represent Barbados in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games [CAC] following her recent performance at the Copa Merengue CAC qualifier world ranking event.
The competition, which was hosted at Pabell?n de Arquer?a, Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, took place from September 6 to September 11, 2022.
Speaking to Loop Sports, 28-year-old Goddard said that she was feeling conflicted about her performance.
“I have mixed emotions about my performance,” she explained. “I struggled a bit to settle down in the qualification round and it resulted in me not shooting a score I would have liked, but I picked myself back up in eliminations and felt better about my performance during then.”
The Medical Laboratory Technologist who works at Bayview Laboratory in Belleville, St Michael revealed that she not only placed second in the CAC qualifier, but also ninth in a world ranking event against over 100 competitors.
“I competed in two competitions while I was there. One being the CAC qualifier which I placed second overall and opened a Senior Compound female slot for Barbados. The second was a world ranking event in which I placed ninth overall.”
Goddard, who is an experienced archer having been shooting for over 15 years, disclosed that this was not her first time competing abroad, however, the weather conditions in the Dominican Republic were something she had never experienced before.
“I have been competing overseas for quite some time. My last competition would have been a world ranking shoot in Medellin Colombia last year May, which I would have finished fourth overall. There hasn’t been much difference with competing at different competitions. The only thing I can think about is the weather. Some countries I have competed in have been freezing while others, for example Dominican Republic, was extremely hot, I have never experienced heat like that in my life.”
Currently, Goddard is focusing on training for the CAC games with her eyes set on the 2023 Pan American Qualifier as well.
“I would like to attend the Pan American Qualifier next year. I am unsure of dates but for now, I am mainly focusing on my training for the CAC games.”
Looking ahead with determination, she took a moment to thank her family and friends who play an important role in her archery career. “My coach, family, husband and friends, each one of them play an important role in my archery career.” She added, “They are always proud of me no matter the outcome.”

The body of a young male was discovered at Long Bay, St Philip following a shooting incident on Friday night.
According to police, around 9:58 pm lawmen responded to reports of gun shots in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, the man was found with a wound at the back of his head in a bushy area next to a residence. He was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
The Barbados Police Service is appealing to members of the public for assistance in identifying this male.
If you have witnesses or have knowledge of this incident, call the District ‘C’ Station at 416-8200 or 8204, Police Emergency 211, Crime Stoppers at 1800-TIPS (8477) or the nearest Police Station.

The Government of the Cayman Islands has upgraded the Hurricane Watch for Grand Cayman to a Hurricane Warning and has changed the Hurricane Watch for Little Cayman and Cayman Brac to a Tropical Storm Watch.
At 2 pm, the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said centre of Tropical Storm Ian was located 810 kilometres southeast of Grand Cayman.
On the forecast track, the centre of TS Ian is forecast to pass southwest of Jamaica on Sunday, and pass near the Cayman Islands Sunday night and early Monday. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica.

TS Ian will then approach western Cuba late Monday and emerge over the south-eastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.
The storm has maximum sustained winds that are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Forecasters have predicted that TS Ian with strengthen significantly and become a hurricane on Sunday.

Two People Hospitalised After Minibus Hits Utility Pole In Soufriere – St. Lucia Times News

On Saturday, emergency personnel transported a minibus driver and a passenger in the vehicle to the hospital after the bus hit a utility pole in Soufriere.
The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) reported that the emergency responders had to extricate the trapped driver.
The driver and the passenger were both reported ‘conscious and alert’ after the accident.

According to the SLFS, the Soufriere fire station received a call for help at approximately 2:04 pm.

Big rivalries abound in cricket: India vs Pakistan, England vs Australia. In the Caribbean Premier League, the biggest rivalry is between the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) and the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), and these two heavyweight teams will lock horns at Providence today, Saturday, September 24, from 19:00h.
According to TKR captain Kieron Pollard, he is expecting the Providence Stadium to be packed as the biggest rivalry in the ‘biggest party in sport’ takes centre stage.

Speaking after Thursday’s match which the TKR lost to the Patriots, Pollard said: “Game got away from us in the last four overs with the ball. That’s what shows us what T20 cricket is. Need to do yorkers better. The next game is a must-win, and we expect a packed stadium. This is why we play the game.”
Meanwhile, GAW captain Shimron Hetmyer has been ecstatic after his side chased down 195 against the St Lucia Kings on Thursday.
“Coming home, we knew we had to do our best, and the guys continued to deliver time and time again. Well done to the guys. When you are chasing 190-odd, you just tell the guys that you have nothing to lose. That was the thinking, and it worked for us. Bowling at night here is tough, and can’t fault the guys. Faf played a top knock, one of the best that I’ve seen in a while. I just told the guys to enjoy themselves and give the crowd a proper show, irrespective of how the result ends,” Hetmyer said.
For the Warriors, Shai Hope has found form, scoring back-to-back fifties. He has 175 runs this season at an average of 43.75. Despite not being dominant, Hetmyer has 196 runs this season, while Chandrapaul Hemraj, who is due for a big innings, has 142 runs.
In the bowling department, Imran Tahir has eight wickets while Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith each have seven this season.
TKR have not been clinical, as had obtained in the past. Tim Seifert has 208 runs, leading the batting charts for TKR, but his strike rate is only 94. Colin Munro has 128 runs this season, while Pollard and Andre Russell have 119 and 107 respectively. They have only shown glimpses of destructiveness this season.
Hope, who scored a classic 59 at Providence and won the player of the match award, has noted that it felt good to bat. He also noted that the team has self-belief. “Feels good to get out there and do what I love, which is batting. Missed a few games early on. We had self-belief, we wanted to stick to our plans, and were confident of chasing them off. It’s just about doing what the team requires, batting to a plan, and I needed to up the strike rate, so that’s what I did. I never played in front of such a great crowd; hopefully, we can get them more wins. Of course, you have to have it (self-belief about winning the title),” Hope said at the post-match presser.
Additionally, Rahmanullah Gurbaz has said he is enjoying his first outing in the CPL. “I really enjoy the people and the love they are giving us. I am excited to be here. We love the crowd, and the crowd is really nice, they support us from start to end, the crowd is amazing,” Gurbaz has said.
The Warriors and TKR are both at the bottom of the table with seven points, but a win would take one of these teams into qualification contention. Will it be chicken curry or curry chicken? Time would tell.
