TO stimulate growth in the economy, the Finance Minister has allocated $6.2 billion to the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP).

This figure is some $2 billion more than last year, when the PSIP was allocated $4.110 billion. In 2020 the allocation was $5.387 billion.

“To create employment, drive development and stimulate economic activity, the PSIP has been increased to $6.2 billion, $2 billion more than fiscal 2022. And while increasing investment in the development programme in 2023, we will continue to pursue our fiscal consolidation objectives, which will ultimately lead to reasonable fiscal and debt sustainability.”

The PSIP is the Government’s funded initiatives through the Consolidated Fund and the Infrastructure Development Fund, which includes programmes and projects of various ministries and state agencies to enhance socio-economic development as part of the country’s overall vision.

Imbert added that apart from that, the Government plans to spend $5.453 billion on social grants once the budget, entitled Tenacity and Stability in the Face of Global Challenges, is passed.

Imbert: More $$ for farmers who produce alternatives to wheat flour

Producers of alternatives to wheat flour now have access to more funding from the Government.

On Monday, during the national budget presentation for the financial year 2022–2023, the Finance Minister said soaring commodity prices on the global market are affecting increases in wholesale and retail flour prices in the domestic market.

Imbert said wheat supply had been derailed by the Russia-Ukraine war, in which countries combined generate 27 per cent of global wheat exports.

This country, he said, has already experienced increases in prices of flour and associated products because of that war.

“To this end, we are taking advantage of this opportunity by focusing on root crop flour as a cheaper alternative to wheat flour. This product is already available in existing farmers’ markets. We will therefore expand the enterprise base to produce alternatives to wheat flour,” Imbert said. “We will do so by extending the financial coverage of the grant fund facility for this from 50 per cent to 75 per cent. And we will increase the maximum funding amount from $250,000-$340,000 for all producers of alternatives to wheat flour.”

He expressed his “sincere gratitude” to farmers for the excellent work they have been doing despite the challenges they face.

“I wish to confirm that we have once again allocated the additional sum of $300 million for agricultural incentives, infrastructure and programmes in this year’s budget,” Imbert said.

Imbert said there is a direct correlation between food consumption and food systems.

He said the Government is addressing issues relating to nutrition and non-communicable diseases and “a persistent increase in a worrying trend in obesity among children and adults.

“We are committed to policies, via the ministries responsible for health, education, trade and industry, community development, sports, youth and agriculture, to reverse these alarming trends,” Imbert said.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Rihanna has confirmed on her socials that she will be at the February 12, 2023, half-time show for Super Bowl LVII and now her brands are basically saying that they will be there too.

With many fans making jokes that Rihanna will perform by way of her brands – Fenty Beauty and Fenty SKIN, it is brilliant marketing that those brands are now in on the grand announcement.

Rihanna posted her outstretched hand with an American football yesterday (Sunday, September 25) before confirming that it means she will take center stage at the Super Bowl LVII half-time show.

But only a couple of hours ago, her brands started publishing their versions of her Super Bowl announcement.

Fenty Beauty raised a beauty blender and a tube of Fenty Gloss Bomb lipgloss.

However, on the undeniably superior app on Twitter, someone tweeted Rihanna’s hand with the PRECISION MAKEUP SPONGE 100 since yesterday after her announcement. The tweet has surpassed 50K likes since September 25, while the Fenty Beauty gloss bomb tweet is at 17K and climbing over the past three hours.

Fenty SKIN is holding up Fat Water. It’s a bottle of Fat Water Niacinamide Pore-Refining Toner Serum with Barbados Cherry.

Despite Rihanna being spotted going into the studio last week, fans have been sharing their versions of Rihanna’s half-time show since the announcement saying that she will probably launch another line of products or even drop Fenty Sports.

Over 380K people liked this tweet in response to Rih’s announcement.

And this tweet got in excess of 100K likes.

NEOC issues all-clear for Cayman Islands as Hurricane Ian passes Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has issued the all-clear notice for the Cayman Islands, effective 3pm, as Hurricane Ian passes on its way to Cuba.

Hurricane Ian is expected to continue on its northwest path, strengthening into a major hurricane by the time it passes over Cuba on Tuesday morning.

“While weather conditions are expected to gradually improve as Hurricane Ian moves away from the area, the Cayman Islands is expected to continue to face rain, wind, rough seas and heavy swells for the next 24 hours,” according to the NEOC.

Premier G Wayne Panton

Cayman Islands residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official channels for updates and not to take unnecessary risks in the aftermath of the storm.

Premier G Wayne Panton said the Cayman Islands are fortunate to have been spared greater damage and credited the public for all efforts to be prepared ahead of the severe weather and stay safe while the storm passed.

“While we have all been very fortunate to have been spared the worst of a potentially very serious storm, I’m extremely pleased to have seen the efforts made by the Caymanian public to prepare for ‘the worst’, whilst praying for the best. In this situation, this is simply the safest, most strategic thing to do,” said Panton.

“We are aware of the considerable anxiety storms can pose for our people. Although the all clear has now been issued for our islands, we must continue to heed the advisories from HMCI, CINWS and other official sources, to ensure that we keep ourselves and our loved ones safe,” he added.

Governor Martyn Roper

Meanwhile, Governor Martyn Roper said Hurricane Ian was a timely test of the Cayman Islands’ readiness and recovery systems.

“We have been given the all-clear from Hurricane Ian. Fortunately, the impact across all three Islands has not been as bad as expected, but it is always right to over-prepare. It has been a great test of our systems,” he said.

“HMS Medway is now in our waters, having arrived here at incredible speed in challenging seas following our call for support. It is reassuring to know how fast the ship can get to us for any future weather events. The ship will be visible off Grand Cayman for the next couple of days. The troops may come ashore later today or tomorrow and assist with relief efforts,” he said.
