MV Canawaima

The MV Canawaima, which serves the Guyana-Suriname route, will recommence operation today after being docked for repairs.

Authorities said on Friday that there will be daily travel between the two countries.

“The vessel is scheduled to depart – Suriname at 10:00h and Moleson Creek Terminal Guyana at 10:30h at their respective local times.”

In addition, it was related that although there is one scheduled crossing daily, the service will continue to operate as traffic warrants, and as such, multiple trips may be facilitated if deemed necessary.

Nevertheless, the management apologised for any inconvenience caused by the brief break in service and looks forward to continuous support from the public.

Over the past five years, the ferry has been dry-docked from time to time on numerous occasions, and the resulting delays have been exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MV Canawaima was previously dry-docked for more than a year and returned to operation only in October 2021. In March, it was out of operation for a week, in order to facilitate emergency repairs.

Trio wanted by Police for $400M gold heist

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana
Wanted: Damien Brummel, Andray Duncan and Mark Singh

As investigations intensify into the $400 million gold heist, the Police have issued wanted bulletins for three other men for questioning in relation to the robbery.

Police are on the hunt for 22-year-old Mark Singh of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD); 27-year-old Andray Duncan of Grove, EBD; and 51-year-old Damien Brummel of Vreed-en-hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

So far, 49-year-old Bhaloonauth Seegobin, called “Krishna”, and his 24-year-old son Satrohan Seegobin, called “Richie”, of Farm, East Bank Demerara (EBD), were arraigned at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.

Police stated that between December 2021 and January 2022, in the company of others, they stole 1000 ounces of raw gold, worth $400 million, from a businesswoman of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

It was reported that the businesswoman discovered the gold missing only when she went to check two weeks ago and immediately contacted the Police.

Bhaloonauth Seegobin has pleaded not guilty to the charge, and has been remanded to prison until November 1, 2022, but Satrohan Seegobin has pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.

It was further reported that the businesswoman is a gold dealer who, over the years, has accumulated the raw gold and concealed same at a location within the confines of her home.

The two men were contracted by the victim to conduct repairs to her home, during which they found the stash of gold, divided same between them, and went on a spending spree. During the investigation, detectives recovered three motor vehicles – two cars and one canter – as well as a quantity of raw gold.

In addition, two Police officers stationed in Berbice, who had reportedly received a tip-off about the robbery, are presently in custody after they allegedly took a $6 million bribe to sweep the crime under the carpet. Further, another person was arrested and the Police were able to recover $6 million in cash, along with two motor cars.

On Friday, the Police issued the wanted bulletin for the others in connection with the gold heist.

Anyone with information about the trio’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Police on telephone numbers 225-6940; 225-8196; 226-7476, 911 or the nearest Police station.

Another massive crime fighting initiative launched Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in partnership with the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) launched a major operational initiative ‘Operation Relentless II’, targeting criminal gangs and gangsters involved in violent crimes or other aspects of the illicit gun trade.

The initiative was launched today, Friday, September 23 with an emphasis on the Divisions having the highest levels of violent crimes.

Among the major drivers of the recent violence are ongoing conflicts among persons involved in the scamming underworld as well as internal conflicts within criminal organizations over illegal firearms and ill-gotten gains. The operations come in anticipation of the new Firearms Act that is expected to bring tougher penalties for possession and use of illegal guns.

Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson says that the launch of “” follows ongoing intelligence and data analysis of the violent crimes committed in the Divisions of concern.

A series of joint planning activities with the JDF, as well as plans developed at the JCF High Command, Area, and Divisional Command levels will be executed under Operation Relentless II.

“This operation features a suite of specific and planned tactical operations designed to target those gunmen, scammers, and other criminals who have no regard for life and who have been behind the recent shootings and murders,” Commissioner Anderson said. “We have been gathering intelligence on persons who are funding these violent crimes through lottery scamming and drug trafficking activities with a view to prosecution.

We will also be working with other local and overseas law enforcement partners to capture and extradite some of these persons”, he continued. Additional manpower and mobility support is being allocated to the Divisions of focus to resource the planned operations.

“If you see unusual numbers of police and military carrying out activities in your communities, don’t be alarmed. It is part of a series of intelligence and data-driven operations that will be carried out across several divisions throughout the rest of the year”, says Commissioner Anderson.

Members of the public are being asked to be patient and cooperative as the security forces carry out these operations. We also ask that you report any strange persons seen in your communities and be on the lookout for wanted persons. The public can contact us by calling the JCF Tipline at 811, Police Emergency at 119 or CRIME STOP at 311. –
