Premier Wayne Panton has assured the public that the government is fully prepared and all emergency services are available to provide assistance as necessary as the island braces for the effects of Tropical Depression 9.
The Cayman Islands has been placed on a Hurricane Watch as the storm is expected to start affecting the territory late Sunday. The system is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane as it moves towards Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.
Flooding is expected in low-lying area on Grand Cayman.
At the same time, the premier has urged the public to make preparation.
“I urge everyone to monitor official communication channels, including Radio Cayman, to track the development of this storm system, as storms are unpredictable and can change course at any time,” Panton said in a statement.
“Please ensure that you have ample supplies to provide for yourself and your loved ones through the storm and 48 hours thereafter. Important provisions include prescription medications, baby supplies, non-perishable food and drinking water. Be prepared for potential loss of power,” the premier said.
He added: “I ask that you remain calm. Preparation and caution are key to remaining safe. Please conclude your preparations as quickly as possible and plan to be safely sheltered by Sunday afternoon.
“To allow the public to make final preparations, we have today authorised for supermarkets, hardware stores, and home depots to be open for business on Sunday, 25 September 2022 from 6am to 4pm.
For emergency assistance at any time, please call 911. The Mental Health hotline will remain open at 1-800-543-6463.
Visit weather.gov.ky, caymanprepared.gov.ky, gov.ky and Radio Cayman for up-to-date information on Tropical Depression 9, which will be named Hermine when it becomes a Tropical Storm.

Le secr?taire adjoint a d?clar? que la menace de sanctions “ces derniers jours a eu un effet calmant sur la situation sur le terrain en Ha?ti”, bien que les d?tails de la r?solution potentielle n’aient pas encore ?t? rendus publics.
“Je pense que l’adoption d’une r?solution et la cr?ation d’un cadre vont poursuivre cet effet d’apaisement”, a d?clar? Nichols. “Jusqu’? ce que des individus sp?cifiques soient renvoy?s ? un comit? de sanctions, puis sanctionn?s au niveau international, c’est ? ce moment-l? que vous verrez la nature transformatrice de cela. Ces derniers temps, la R?publique dominicaine, a publiquement demand? le retour d’une force multinationale de maintien de la paix, arguant que l’instabilit? d’Ha?ti et la violence end?mique des gangs constituent une menace croissante pour la r?gion. Une telle d?marche exigerait qu’Ha?ti se soumette ? nouveau ? ce que l’on appelle le chapitre 7, ensemble de dispositions de la charte des Nations unies qui permettent au Conseil de s?curit? de d?ployer des forces internationales dans le cadre d’une mission de maintien de la paix.
Apr?s 13 ans, la derni?re mission de paix de l’ONU a pris fin en Ha?ti en 2017 lorsque le Conseil de s?curit? de l’ONU, pouss? par les ?tats-Unis et d’autres pays, a finalement retir? ses op?rations militaires et de maintien de la paix en Ha?ti.
Si le gouvernement ha?tien demande cette aide, “la communaut? internationale examinerait certainement une telle demande”, a ajout? M. Nichols. Mais “les autorit?s ha?tiennes n’ont pas demand? de bottes sur le terrain”, a-t-il ajout?, “et il n’y a actuellement aucune discussion sur une r?ponse ? la situation en Ha?ti en vertu du chapitre 7”.

National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, who up to Friday afternoon, was in charge of the Government in the absence of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, said he would have attended a meeting that was called by the Ministry of Local Government to strategise with the Disaster Risk Management Committee as the island braces for severe weather over the weekend.
The island was placed on a tropical storm watch late on Friday afternoon, with the Meteorological Service making the announcement.
“All the agencies have been alerted and are in responsive mood. The Ministry of Local Government, which has responsibility for ODPEM (Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Planning), has called for a meeting tomorrow (Friday) of the Disaster Risk Management Committee, and I will be there. All the relevant agencies, in particular the security forces, JDF, police, NWA, the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Ministry of Labour and Social Security and several (other) Government agencies,” said Chang on Thursday.
He added that all Government agencies have been placed on alert in preparation for the inclement weather conditions.
“The whole of Government is on alert in case we are exposed to severe weather conditions over the weekend,” stated Chang.
Fishers have also been ordered to evacuate the cays, and those on land are advised not to venture out to sea.
“The fishers on the cays are advised to begin evacuation now. And those who are on shore, not to go back to sea,” said Chang.
The system is moving westward and likely to get more organised and by the weekend we will see how it is moving. It’s south of us and we should have the impact, whether heavy rains or heavy winds or more severe weather. The Met Office is keeping us alert and every three hours should review and issue bulletins accordingly,” Dr Chang said.
He said he was in touch with Holness, who was scheduled to return to the island on Friday afternoon.

Jamaica and Ipswich Town defender Greg Leigh is facing months on the sidelines after suffering an injury late in his club’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday last week.
Scans confirmed it was more severe than first thought, meaning the left-back will now face several months out.
The 27-year-old England-born Leigh was due to join up with the Reggae Boyz squad for their friendly against Argentina in New Jersey next Tuesday but will now begin his recovery and rehabilitation.
“He, unfortunately, picked something up at the back end of the Sheffield Wednesday game, which was initially thought to be bone bruising,” manager Kieran McKenna said. “At that point, it was touch-and-go whether he was going to go away for international duty.
“He’s had some scans this week, just to make sure, and unfortunately he has a compression fracture of his leg and will be out for a longer time. That’s a disappointing one for Greg and us as well.
“He’s going to have a lengthy spell on the sidelines, more likely months but hopefully not a long period of months. That depends on the bone healing over the next six weeks, so it’s very much recovery to let it heal, then we’ll be checking and we’re hopeful it’s a short period of months.”

Yung Miami is finally opening up about the source of her mental breakdown over the summer.
City Girls rapper Yung Miami says that when she had tweeted she was having a mental breakdown in July, it had nothing to do with Diddy as some had speculated. While on her Caresha Please podcast on Revolt, Trina spoke about the tweet that went viral and had many people reading into it as they felt that she was having a meltdown after her beau Diddy was spotted out with another woman.
However, the Miami rapper revealed that she hit rock bottom despite trying to push forward when her Godmother Trina’s niece was shot and killed back in July. According to reports, Toni Chester, the 17-year-old niece of the rapper Trina, was fatally shot in Miami, Florida. Two others were injured in the incident. Her death was particularly devastating for Trina, who had a close relationship with her niece and raised her as if she was her daughter.
According to Yung Miami, she had never had a chance to mourn her baby daddy, who was killed years before, and when Chester died, she basically shut down and couldn’t function.
“This was the real reason was we had a show in Toronto and it’s like a whole process to get over there…my shit wasn’t together when we got to the airport…I just got off a plane and I just like kinda just went through a death…you know my baby daddy died and I never got a chance to go through the motions because I am always working so it was one of those moments,” she began.
According to her, she had to call off the appearance because her Godmother Trina needed her.
“so it was one of those moments again somebody close to me had died and here ai am trying to go to a show and I’m like going through my emotions and when I got to the airport I was like I can’t do it and I just broke down. It triggered me so bad,” she added as she explained that she called off the show and went to be with Trina.
The Toronto show that Miami was referencing was on July 30th, and Chester had been killed on July 20th. Trina had also recently lost her mother, so it’s understandable that the entire family would be in pain from Chester’s loss.

Further to the issuance of a Hurricane Alert by the Cayman Islands Government and forecast for inclement weather set to affect the Islands beginning on Sunday, 25 September, through Monday, 26 September, the following hurricane shelters have been activated:
Five shelters will open in Grand Cayman on Sunday 25 September at 2pm. They are:Sir John A. Cumber Primary School John Gray High School (Pet friendly)Bodden Town Primary SchoolClifton Hunter High School (Pet friendly)East End Civic Centre
Each of the shelters mentioned above also serves as a designated Emergency Medical Centre.
The Cayman Islands Red Cross shelter will be open from 4pm on Sunday 25 September.The Aston Rutty Civic Centre in Cayman Brac will be open as an emergency shelter at 2pm on Sunday 25 September.Additional shelters activations across all three islands will be announced as needed, depending on the intensity and forecasted track of the tropical cyclone.
It is anticipated that the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) will stand up at 4pm on Sunday 25 September. The decision to activate this national response mechanism is not taken lightly. As with Tropical Storm Grace in 2021, the Cayman Islands Government would prefer to be over-prepared in response to the potential impacts of a tropical cyclone.
