An Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara man has chopped his  son to death and lit his wife on fire early this morning. 

Dead: 21-year-old identified as Sean ScottPolice at the crime scene

Dead is 21-year-old Seon Scott. Injured is Sharon Scott.

While details are sketchy at this time, Inews understands that the man, Leon Bob subsequently attempted suicide. The incident occurred at 01:45h this morning

His wife has been rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and is in a critical state. (This story is developing)

Luego de que el gobernador Pedro Rafael Pierluisi Urrutia expresara en conferencia de prensa que su expectativa era que la gran mayoría de los clientes tengan servicio de energía eléctrica en noche del miércoles, los portavoces de LUMA Energy establecieron en comunicación escrita que lo que espera el gobernador no necesariamente ocurrirá.

“Para aclarar, aunque algunas zonas en Puerto Rico podrían tener servicio antes, si las condiciones lo permiten, restablecer el servicio de las zonas que se han visto más afectadas tomará más tiempo, dada la severidad y el grado de los daños provocados por el huracán Fiona. A medida que completemos las evaluaciones de daños en todo el sistema eléctrico, podremos brindar tiempos de restablecimiento detallados para diferentes zonas en Puerto Rico.

Queremos que quede muy claro que los esfuerzos para restaurar y reenergizar continúan y se están viendo afectados por inundaciones severas, carreteras intransitables, árboles caídos, equipos deteriorados y líneas caídas”, escribieron los portavoces del consorcio.

En conferencia de prensa el martes, Pierluisi Urrutia expresó que “mi expectativa es que entre hoy y mañana más tardar para fin del día de mañana ya gran parte gran parte de nuestra población va a tener el servicio eléctrico. Qué porcentaje específico, no lo voy a decir, porque esa es la evaluación que se está dando y se está llevando a cabo.  Hay que esperar que tome más tiempo en el área sur, que a mí me consta que hay mayor daño el sistema eléctrico en esa área, van a ver que no se van a poder energizar tan rápido.

As the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment continues to strengthen the existing Social Protection System to better serve all vulnerable groups, the Ministry convened a first meeting of the Saint Lucia Homelessness Steering Committee in July 2022 to discuss coordinated approaches for more effective service delivery to homeless persons in Saint Lucia.

Chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Velda Joseph, the forum brought together representatives of various Governmental, Non-Governmental and Humanitarian Organization, in keeping with the listed composition of the Homeless Steering Committee.

The Committee was established on May 18, 2009 (Cabinet Conclusion 498/2009) as part of Saint Lucia’s National Emergency Management Plan but had remained inactive for some time.

The meeting was attended by representatives from a wide cross-section of Ministries/Agencies and Organizations that provide services to homeless persons.

At the meeting, Social Transformation Officers for the Castries & Gros-Islet regions presented an in-depth review of the existing Emergency Response Plan for the Homeless and facilitated discussions on suggestions for updating the plan.

Discussions also focused on immediate or short-term responses to address issues facing homeless persons and strategies for ensuring better coordination towards improved service delivery.

The Committee agreed on several recommendations made, including the need for expanding the existing committee to include other key agencies/organizations that provide services to the homeless population, mapping existing services being provided as well as the service providers, developing a plan of action to gather more reliable data on issues pertaining to homeless persons and expanding the scope of emergencies covered under the existing response plan.

The meeting ended with an agreement for representatives of each organization to define their specific roles inclusive of the services that they provide to homeless persons for discussions at a follow up meeting.

Members of the steering committee reaffirmed their commitment to participate in the discussions and agreed that cooperation and coordination among all actors is critical to the committee’s success and effectiveness in carrying out its mandate.

The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment regards homelessness as a complex social issue that requires attention not only in disasters but also in everyday life.

The Ministry is pleased with the level of engagement demonstrated by the agencies that attended this initial meeting and looks forward to a deeper level of cooperation as the committee’s work progresses.

The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), the philanthropic arm of the Saint Lucia Hospitality & Tourism Association (SLHTA), on Monday, September 19, 2022 launched its inaugural After School Programme at the Soufriere Primary School.

In attendance were parents, students, school officials and representatives from the SLHTA and TEF.

The After School Programme is aimed at helping students from the Soufriere Infant and Primary schools attain grade-level reading proficiency, enhance reading comprehension and ultimately improve performance at national examinations.

The programme will provide over sixty (60) students with instruction in Reading Therapy, Emotional Learning, Agricultural Science, Physical Education, Music (Steel Pan) and Arts & Crafts.

Mr. Kendal Alexander is a Counsellor at Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School and serves as the coordinator of the programme.

Said Alexander: “We recognised that a lot of children fail because they are incapable of reading. We recognised that if we bridge that gap very early; if they have the capacity to read and comprehend very well, then, of course, the performance in District Eight will be something that all of us as Soufrierians could be very proud of.”

He thanked the TEF for providing support and urged parents to be committed to the programme to ensure the objectives are met.

“The children are the future,” said TEF Programme Manager Ms. Donette Ismael. “This programme is our way of taking care of them and ensuring that they have the necessary foundation to be successful.”

She continued: “People may ask ‘Why Soufriere?’ Soufriere is a hub for tourism. In our marketing campaigns, we prominently feature the Pitons and the Sulphur Springs, so it is fitting that this programme commences in Soufriere! It’s a way of giving back to the people that make tourism happen. It is your hospitality, good nature and warm smile to a visitor that makes them want to come back to Saint Lucia.”

Ismael told the students that they can achieve anything they put their minds to, and encouraged them to enjoy the programme. She also reminded parents of their critical role, stating: “You are integral in making this programme a success. Without your commitment; without you encouraging your children, this programme will not be successful.”

Ismael heaped praises on Ladera Resort, Stonefield Villa Resort and Renwick & Company Ltd.— the first three sponsors to partner with the TEF on the pilot project. She also thanked all the companies that contribute to the TEF.

Without them, she noted, this initiative would not be possible. Based on the success of this pilot, the SLHTA intends to introduce the programme in other districts.

An enthusiastic District Eight Education Officer, Ms. Joel Charlemagne, thanked the TEF for deciding to launch the initiative in Soufriere, and encouraged students to put their best foot forward. “It’s a beautiful programme, all about developing our children holistically. Let’s make this work! We are very grateful and we are indebted to them. The only way we can repay the SLHTA is by giving them excellent results.”
