JFF condemns racist abuse aimed at Damion Lowe Loop Jamaica

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has come out in support of national defender Damion Lowe, who was the alleged victim of racial abuse during a US Major League Soccer (MLS) game on Sunday.

The incident took place in a game in the MLS between Inter Miami and D.C. United.

The JFF says it strongly condemns and abhors racism in any form, whether on or off the field.

In a press release the JFF said “we stand ready to give whatever support is necessary to Damion.”

MLS said it will look into “a claim that D.C. United player Taxi Fountas used a racial slur against Inter Miami defender Damion Lowe during the second half of the team’s match on Sunday night.”

Inter Miami won the road match 3-2 to give their playoff hopes a major boost, with Gonzalo Higuain getting the deciding goal off an assist from DeAndre Yedlin in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

But the mood was somber afterwards, with Inter Miami (12-13-6) players revealing that they were ready to walk off the field during the match if something was not done about what they believe Fountas said.

“It was a racist comment,” Inter Miami coach Phil Neville said. “It was unacceptable. A word was used. I think it’s unacceptable in society. A word was used, I think, the worst word in the world. And that’s it, really.”

Fountas and Lowe, who is black, both received yellow cards in the 62nd minute after exchanging words. That all happened shortly after Fountas scored to tie the game at 2-2.

Inter Miami players gathered and after a period of conversation that lasted several minutes, Neville spoke with Wayne Rooney, his D.C. United counterpart. Rooney took Fountas out of the game, and play resumed.

“There was a complaint, which I’m sure will get investigated. Not much more I can say,” Rooney told reporters.

Yedlin said he has been outspoken about how there’s no place for racism in soccer throughout his career. He said Fountas used the slur as Lowe was walking away from their dust-up.

“If nothing was done, we weren’t going to continue,” Yedlin said.

Once Fountas was taken off, the game went on, but there was no celebration after.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t even feel like a win because of that incredibly dark moment,” Yedlin said. “So now, we’ll see what MLS does about it. My eyes will be on that a lot, to see what kind of action they take, because it’s now up to them to take action and make a stand and show this not only has no place in the game but no place in society.”

MLS released a statement postgame saying an investigation “into this matter will begin promptly.

“MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language, and we take these allegations very seriously,” the league said.

Miami also got two goals from Leonardo Campana.

Christian Benteke also scored for United (7-19-6). United outshot Miami 17-8, but each team had five shots on goal.

Drake Callender saved three of the five shots he faced for Miami. David Ochoa saved two of the five shots he faced for United.

Miami next play on Friday against Toronto on the road, and United will visit CF Montreal on Saturday.

Silent Mission the one to beat in 6-furlong sprint Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Leading trainer Jason DaCosta’s SILENT MISSION should make amends in Tuesday’s six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, non-winners of two races, after finishing a half-length fourth in a four-way photo on August 27.

SILENT MISSION was forced wide off the home turn after joint leader MILA’S ALL THAT went down against the rail. About to make her bid, DaCosta’s filly was pushed out wide by BABYLIKE, whose rider took evasive action to avoid a possible pile-up.

Returning at 114lb with Omar Walker replacing Anthony Thomas, SILENT MISSION should benefit from the six-time champion’s riding style of being earlier in the pace.

In addition to being too far off the pace down the backstretch, almost next-to-last, SILENT MISSION drifted to heavier ground inside in the stretch run whereas the horses who finished ahead of her, GREAT TRICK, GET A PEPSI and LAST BID ran in mid-track.

A closing sprinter at best, SILENT MISSION used her finishing speed to stay on for third in both the Portmore Stakes and 1000 Guineas earlier this season, putting her rating above non-winners of two races.

Champion trainer Anthony Nunes, who has won eight races in three meets, posting consecutive three-timers on the last two racecards, has two strong challengers in the 12-horse field, WOWTASTIC and MINIDEWAK.

WOWTASTIC was disputing the lead with MILA’S ALL THAT, LAST BID and GREAT TRICK. She was unaffected by MILA’S ALL THAT’s fall and weakened close home, finishing fifth, a length and a half behind storming SILENT MISSION.

Returning a week later at five furlongs round, WOWTASTIC and MINIDEWAK were both outclassed by LA CRIMAE. MINIDEWAK challenged WOWTASTIC a furlong out before LA CRIMAE pounced on both.

Post time for Tuesday’s nine-race card at Caymanas Park, which was originally scheduled for Monday, is 12:30 pm.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services is monitoring a tropical wave a few hundred miles East of the Lesser Antilles and is urging Saint Lucians to remain vigilant.

The Met Office expects the weather system to reach Saint Lucia by Friday.

Meteorological Services Director Andre Joyeux told St Lucia Times that the wave, currently a disorganised area of showers, is showing signs of development.

“It has about fifty percent chance of development in the next five days,” Joyeux disclosed.

He noted that people should remain alert since recently Fiona brought showers that triggered land slippages around the Island.

According to the Meteorological Services Director, any other system that passes through has to be taken seriously.

“We saw Fiona caused some damage in Guadeloupe. That easily could have been us. So with this system coming in the projected path if it develops it would be over the Southern Windwards where we are located,” Joyeux noted.

He advised people to take heed and continue listening to the weather reports.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

JC Hutchinson (inset) says the bypass would provide a greater opportunity for more locals and tourists to enjoy Bamboo Avenue in St Elizabeth.

NEWYou can now listen to Loop News articles!

Member of Parliament for St Elizabeth North Western, the Jamaica Labour Party’s JC Hutchinson is proposing that a bypass road be built for the world famous Holland Bamboo, which he said would boost tourism activity in the area.

Hutchinson made his proposal known during his recent contribution to the 2022/23 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives.

He pointed out that extensive work was currently underway to rehabilitate and re-establish bamboo plants in the popular Holland Bamboo Avenue but expressed concerns about the continued destruction of the plants.

“The emission of fumes from vehicles plying the route is one of the main causes for the destruction of some of the bamboo. I am requesting that an overhead bypass be constructed, starting at the entrance of Bamboo Avenue from the Lacovia end and extending across the Holland property to end a little beyond Middle Quarters,” Hutchinson told the House.

He also mentioned several projects that his constituency is proposing to be implemented, which he said would “greatly improve the lives of the constituents, and by extension positively impact the development of our national economy”.

Hutchinson said the bypass road would also provide a greater opportunity for more locals and tourists to enjoy Bamboo Avenue.

“This would mean greater economic activity for the locale and parish if the heritage site is developed and fully functional as a tourist attraction. The Holland Bamboo Avenue is recognised worldwide as one of the most pictured and picturesque natural attractions,” Hutchinson stated.
