Aranguez residents said they were upset that a large caiman was beaten to death in the area on Thursday.

A video of the caiman swimming in floodwater at the corner of the Aranguez Main Road and Sookia Trace, was circulated on WhatsApp.

Another video showed a man holding the animal against a fence while another man beat it.

The video stirred condemnation from social media users.

Newsday visited the area where the caiman was killed and spoke with residents and workers in the area who recalled the incident.

Azim Rahim, aka “Mitchy,” said he helped pull the caiman out of a nearby Lotto booth, but did not kill the animal.

He said the caiman tried to bite him while he tried to pull it out of the booth, but he was unharmed.

“I didn’t kill it, but it went inside the (Lotto) booth. A woman was inside there and it tried to bite her, so those boys in the area held it and they killed it.

“I don’t know who the person is that did that.

“I saw there was a lot of water and it wanted to bite me and all ,but I pulled away.

“The woman just went to play her mark and she started to bawl and thing, so when I pulled it out I just let it cross the road.”

Asked why the men didn’t try to subdue the animal without hurting it, Rahim said it tried to attack them repeatedly while they were trying to lure it away and felt they had no choice.

“They couldn’t catch it without harming it. It wanted to bite, so they lasso it and killed it.”

One man said he heard of the incident and was upset the men involved did not find another way to capture the caiman and then release it.

“I plant crops and stuff not too far from here, and there’s a lot of them that come out some days, and I just leave them alone.

“I don’t see what the point was to kill the animal…it was totally unnecessary.”

Newsday also spoke to Celina Singh, who runs the Lotto booth where the caiman was found. She said she was also upset at the way the men attacked the creature.

She said she had been in no immediate danger, and hoped it could have been captured without hurting it.

Contacted for comment, a police officer in the North Eastern Division said he did not have much information on what happened, so there would be further enquiry by the police.

He said there were laws in place to prevent cruelty against animals and once evidence of wrongdoing was found, those involved could face criminal charges.

“It’s a kind of callous, inhumane behaviour. There may be people who think that it might be a joke, but it’s not.

“If it is we have the laws that govern how animals should be treated, and there are breaches, then certainly, coming out of the video there is only so much we can gather and in terms of hardcore evidence.

“(But) once we have laws in place and there are breaches those involved will face the consequences.”

Asked what the public should do when faced with wild animals in urban areas, the officer suggested they call the zoo or any agency prepared to take the animal.

ACCLAIMED jazz musicians, including US-based trumpeter Etienne Charles and veteran double-bassist David “Happy” Williams, will serenade fans at the National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA) on Saturday night for a fund-raiser concert in aid of restoration works at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port of Spain.

The event is scheduled to start at 6.30 pm, with other notable jazz figures in pannist Ray Holman, guitarist/composer Theron Shaw, arranger Leston Paul, vocalist Vaughnette Bigford are also carded to perform.

Proceeds of the event will be directed to the Holy Trinity Cathedral Restoration Fund. Restoration work for the cathedral, which was damaged by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in August, 2018.

A budget of $70 million was later earmarked for the restoration project, being managed by the Urban Development Corporation of TT.

Anglican Bishop Claude Berkley, head of the Anglican diocese in TT, launched the restoration fund last November, appealing for contributions to successfully undertake work to the roof, walls and fixtures that he said “will protect and return the cathedral to its grandeur.”

Entienne Charles –

Selby Browne, chairman of the Holy Trinity Cathedral Restoration Committee, asked the potential attendees, “Will you keep the lights of the cathedral alive? Will you keep the bells of the cathedral pealing?”

Browne said as the “Mother Church,” the Holy Trinity Cathedral “has a glorious history as a historic edifice and architectural gem that stands majestically in the heart of the capital city.”

Since the consecration of the cathedral nearly two centuries ago, the church has experienced devastating damage.

He said earthquakes in 1825, 1918, and on August 21, 2018, have caused significant damage.

“Restoration work is considered a necessity for this historical jewel. There is substantial cracking and damage to walls, the steeple, and chancel roof, as well as the destruction of several stone pinnacles, which today must be undertaken in this major restoration project.”

In addition to the fund-raiser concert, the committee and the diocese are seeking donations, which can be made by visiting its website: trinityrestorationtt.com. Donations can be made by cheque in the name of The Incorporated Trustees of the Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral Restoration – ITACTT and may be mailed directly to: the Office of the Anglican Diocese.

General and VVIP tickets are still available.

Jacob denies Griffith’s claim of politically-motivated investigations

Former police commissioner Gary Griffith. FILE PHOTO –

ACTING Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob is denying allegations by his predecessor that he (Jacob) appointed a junior officer to investigate Gary Griffith on orders from the political directorate.

In a telephone interview with Newsday on Friday, Jacob said he is not aware of any police investigation against Griffith who is the immediate former police commissioner.

Griffith wrote to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Police Complaints Authority (PCA), and the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) calling for these entities to investigate how a selected police constable was investigating him, and other issues which he found troubling.

The letters asked that the Prime Minister be questioned to determine if any junior police officer met with senior Government officials in the Diplomatic Centre or the PM’s Residence in relation to an investigation where he (Griffith) is the subject.

Griffith is asking that investigators determine from Jacob, if the head of the PSB is being bypassed and whether Jacob is liaising with the junior officer in order to expedite charges against Griffith.

Griffith also wants former members of the PSC to be interviewed to ascertain if then chairman Bliss Seepersad suspended him without approval of the other PSC members; if the past PSC failed to re-appoint Griffith as directed; and whether that PSC board received selected names to investigate, from a politician.

“A clandestine unit (has been) appointed to meet to see if anything can be found to have me arrested. My reliable sources within the TTPS have revealed that there is a unit, established for several months, assigned to do nothing other than to come to work daily and see what they can trump up, contrive or package to have me arrested as directed, regardless of whether the charges can hold, as the intention is to specifically to smear my character for political benefit,” Griffith claimed in his letters.

In response to the claims Jacob told Newsday that the police service does not operate in the way Griffith is alleging.

“Maybe that is how it was when he was there, but the PSB is headed by a senior superintendent and an investigation happened without her knowledge? He feels the police service is some parlour in Maraval?

“There are several investigations ongoing by the PSB with contributions from other units because we have a multi-unit approach now,” Jacob said.

Newsday contacted the junior officer named by Griffith as being the one leading investigations on behalf of politicians. She flatly denied his allegations.

“I am a duly appointed police officer and investigations are part of my duty. Anything further will have to come from the police service corporate communications,” the officer said.

Threats of lawsuit over constant late payment to OJTs

Black Immigrant Daily News

Labour Minister Stephen Mc Clashie. –

CHAIRMAN of the UNC’s national youth arm, Kaveesh Siewdial, is calling on the Labour Ministry to address late payment of stipends to trainees of the on-the-job training programme (OJT) or face lawsuits for breach of contract.

Speaking at a media conference on Friday, Siewdial said 21,500 trainees are affected by constant late payments and with new trainees set to start on Monday, he is hoping the ministry addresses this concern.

Calls on Friday to minister Stephen Mc Clashie went unanswered.

Siewdial said September is the fifth consecutive month payment to OJTs are late and some trainees are contemplating legal action against the ministry, as they were promised to be paid on or by the 15th of each month. He said attorneys are already ready to represent the trainees pro bono (at no cost).

“This month makes it the fifth consecutive where the ministry has not upheld its end of this agreement. Yet, the people enrolled in this program are showing up to work and upholding their end, by providing their labour despite this late compensation. Imagine we have a government OOK with signing a document with someone with terms and conditions and then not meeting it.”

He added that there has been no word from the ministry on why payments are late. In July, he claimed, the ministry said that due to the theft of cable wires, it was unable to contact banks and this resulted in late payments. Since then, there has been silence on why payments are late.

“A stipend may not be much to a minister who gets paid up to five digits for doing nothing, but to many, a stipend means if they will have lights on or if they will eat two meals or just one. It means if they will be able to buy pampers for their children. This is what this stipend means to many people in the programme,” Siewdial said.

He asked if late payments were just part of a greater plan to shut down the programme altogether.

“I am hereby asking the Minister of Labour to get his act together and pay these stipends on time. We need action, not excuses or PR spin. I hope he understands that he is speaking to the next generation of leaders and so far, you and your government have been failing us. So please, get your act together.”

Black Immigrant Daily News

The elected representative for West Bay West and the Speaker of the Parliament, Dr W McKeeva Bush is stepping down from the Speaker post, according to a statement by Minister Jay Ebanks to Loop News tonight.

“I had a talk with Mr Bush tonight. I emphasised the fact that the PACT government just can’t ‘talk’ about accountability, but must be seen to be accountable,” the statement read.

“While the police investigation is not yet complete, the allegations are serious. In this case, the first step is to relieve Mr Bush from his duties as Speaker,” the statement continued.

“Mr Bush understands this and has therefore agreed to step down as Speaker.”

Speaking to Mr Bush about the development, he said:

“I have considered all my people, my constituency, colleagues and my family. Enough of this, enough and the accusations aren’t going to stop as long as I hold a post in government.

“I know the PACT government is a government for the people and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardise the group in any negative light.”

PM Browne blasts UPP’s small business pull-up as “gimmickry”

Black Immigrant Daily News

Gaston Browne said:Harold Lovell and the other LLC’s in the UPP are using gimmickry to win political support. Their small business pull up, has been a resounding failure.

Typical purchases are: one bun, three mangoes, a bottle of water, Gatorade and a Guinness.

The loss of business from cluttering these business premises and the minimal spend make this initiative useless.
