Reports are that the victims were traveling in a motor vehicle when they stopped at a jerk centre along the roadway.

While at the establishment, they were reportedly attacked by gunmen who were travelling in another motor vehicle.

The Garnett Lawrence-coach St Jago High moved to six points from two games, two points ahead of second-place JC and third-place St Catherine High, both on four points.

Eyewitness: A changing world…on voting?

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Your Eyewitness has few beliefs that he wouldn’t change – and one of them is that things always gonna change!!! When he was a young’un, he was quite impressed with some old Greek guy who said, “You can’t put your foot into the SAME river twice”!! Get it?? The river’s always flowing and therefore is always changing. In Guyana, however, he had to sadly conclude that somebody must’ve blocked our political river ‘cause its ethnic voting waters have remained practically unchanged since the 1950s!! The politicians have been sticking their noses in the same river all that time!!Your Eyewitness seriously don’t think this was caused totally by the “politicians”, who we all like to cuss out for the fallout – including periodic episodes of violence. While they may pollute the political waters with their rhetoric and provocations, they couldn’t be effective if the people (the water of the political river) weren’t predisposed to ethnic manipulation. But the innocent among us – not your hard-nosed realist Eyewitness!! – have always been hoping “things gonna change”. And the lions will lie down with the lambs – and not feast on them!!Well, it looks like the waters are a-changing”!! A just-released LAPOP poll – compiled from data gathered last year – claimed that 65 per cent of Guyanese said they prefer material guarantees — meaning mo’ money and stuff – rather than the integrity of elections!! And the percentage is greater among the poor, young and less educated!! What we’re told then is that probably up to THREE-QUARTERS of the latter cohorts couldn’t give a hoot about who’s elected to govern them – once their bread is buttered!!So, at long last, there’s a sign that a majority of voters won’t cleave to ethnicity when they go out to put their Xs opposite the symbol of the two major parties in 2025!! That’s right – don’t worry about all the fig leaves the PNC’s gonna use, they can’t ever cover up their private (identity)!! It’ll still be PPP and PNC duking it out to run Guyana!! Now one of the main reasons for the EVIDENT change of heart has to be the massive sums of money that has – and will continue – to pour into our national coffers. The young especially want a piece of that action, so they too can live the high-life like those influencers who inhabit their smartphones – now permanently attached to their hands!!Now, Dear Readers, this gives a TREMENDOUS advantage to the incumbent PPP who have their hands to the key of the treasury and can control – and direct – the flow of the funds!! Think Mocha-Arcadia and President Ali!!Now let’s see what the PNC’s gonna say – or do about that!! Ouch!!…on the British Monarchy?Your Eyewitness is plain gobsmacked (yeah…it’s a word!!) by the fealty (there’s no other word for it!!) to the Crown!! Even as they complain about not being able to afford the food in the supermarkets they’re willing to support Charles getting that annual $99 Million STIPEND – not salary – on top of the Royal Privy (and that’s not a loo!). Poor Charles!! But what is more amazing is coming to the fore of what we were assured were “British Characteristics”, like “stiff upper-lip” and “queuing” at the drop of a hat. When Westminster Hall opened its doors at 5 pm on Tuesday, the queue of visitors stretched for almost three miles along the River Thames!! Imagine that – three miles and no one trying to “pope” the line!! As one fella tweeted: “Tell me this isn’t the greatest bit of British performance art that has ever happened. We are a deeply, deeply mad people with an absolutely unshakeable need to join a queue!”Would that madness have washed off on us!!…and washing awayWell…Guyana’s hit the world charts again. First, there was Jonestown’s 918 suicides; then oil and now we’re Number 8 on the list of countries’ population most likely to be flooded out because of climate change!!

Tempête Fiona: La Guadeloupe passe en vigilance rouge

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

2 fraud charges over car deal – MP LEE ON $1M BAIL

Black Immigrant Daily News

News

CHARGED: The UNC’s Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee who has been slapped with two fraud-related charges by police. FILE PHOTO –

OPPOSITION United National Congress (UNC) member and Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee has been charged with one count of fraudulently obtaining tax exemptions on the purchase of a vehicle; and one count of conspiracy to defraud.

Police confirmed to Newsday that Lee was charged by an officer at the Financial Investigations Branch (FIB), Tower C, International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain on Friday afternoon.

He was granted $1 million bail by a justice of the peace to cover both charges. Sources said Lee went to the FIB office on his own volition accompanied by his attorneys.

As the MP and his attorneys left the office, Newsday tried to speak with him. Asked why he was leaving the FIB offices, he said, “This is the PNM at its best!” Lee added that he would give further details over the weekend.

The UNC issued a press release on Friday evening condemning the charges, declaring its unwavering support for Lee and accusing the PNM government of using “operatives in the Police Service,” to try and embarrass the MP.

Lee, a deputy political leader of the UNC, is being represented by attorneys Wayne Sturge, Devesh Maharaj, Kandace Bharath-Nahous and Alexia Romero. He is expected to appear in court on October 12.

THE CHARGES

According to FIB sources, one of the charges stated that during the period 24 March, 2019 and 8 June, 2029, Lee conspired with another person to defraud the State of $1,416,292.65 on the purchase of a Mercedes Benz AMG G63 wagon, which was purported to be for the use of the MP but was bought for someone else who is not entitled to tax exemptions.

The other charge, was that on the same period, Lee falsely and dishonestly applied for and obtained tax exemptions in the sum of $1,416,292.65 on the purchase of the Mercedes Benz for Lee’s use and in the performance of his official duties. Lee was questioned by the FIB in August.

The UNC in its release, issued in the name of the party’s PRO Kirk Meighoo, said of the charges, “It is a deliberate, calculated and well-timed distraction by agents of the PNM to save the Government from unrelenting condemnation by the population.

“This is the start of a reign of terror that we warned about. It comes when the UNC and other opposition voices are in the ascendancy.”

HE WILL BE VINDICATED

The release said that Lee, the party’s Chief Whip was innocent and will be eventually vindicated after the case spends 20 years in the court system. The party demanded that the matter be dealt with expeditiously.

The UNC said this was typical PNM behaviour aided and abetted by “complicit operatives within the police service.” Lee has been the MP for Pointe-a-Pierre since 2015.

The release also reminded of recent collusion which saw what it termed the illegal withdrawal of a Police Service Commission Merit List for the post of commissioner of police.

The party also questioned the legitimacy of the evidence against Lee. “The UNC does not expect anything different from the current leadership of the Police Service who seem to be working very closely with the PNM, even openly in press conferences.”

Any right-thinking person, the release added, would ask why Lee would do what he is accused of doing when there was no benefit to be had by him.

Efforts to reach Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob for responses on Friday evening, were unsuccessful as calls to their respective cellphones went unanswered.
