The Principal of St. Mary’s College (SMC) has responded to a viral video of an incident at the school in which one boy is shown slapping and punching another after being spat on.

“We cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour,” SMC Principal Don Howell asserted.

Howell, describing the incident as unfortunate for the entire school community, indicated that a thorough investigation was underway.

“You know that St. Mary’s College stands on the principle of discipline and respect for school rules and regulations and certainly those are not the values that we teach our young men,” he told reporters.

“We have to continue to assist our boys and to guide them and help them to deal with things in a proper way. Those boys are intelligent boys who under normal circumstances don’t give trouble at school and so we have to correct them,” the SMC Principal explained.

At the same time, he cautioned against jumping to conclusions.

Howell called attention to the tranquil atmosphere at the school while noting that students are focused in class.

In addition, he disclosed that SMC is celebrating what its students are doing.

In this regard, he recalled that Tristan Dorville had set records for Saint Lucia and SMC at a recent Peru swim meet.

Howell also mentioned the school’s performance in CXC exams.

Nevertheless, he noted that apart from intelligence and skill, discipline is important.

“If we allow the regulations to be broken we will just have lawlessness,” Howell declared.

He said he was not surprised that the young man in the viral incident had posted an ‘apology video’ on social media.

“He knows the values taught at the school and would have recognised this is not the way of a Samarian,” Howell told reporters.

“People expect great things from St. Mary’s College and rest assured that we will continue to do great things,” he stated.

Howell also revealed that the school has a clear policy on mobile telephone use at the institution.

“The investigation does include tracking down who recorded the videos. We already have that information and that matter is being dealt with,” he said.

And Howell said SMC reminds everyone that the mobile telephone policy at the institution must be enforced at all times.

DLP tributes flow as Dr Denis Lowe’s Journey comes to end Loop Barbados

The passing of politician Dr Denis Lowe has saddened George Street comrades and supporters.

Several have come forth to offer condolences and to reflect on the political life of Dr Lowe who served two terms – between 2008 and 2018 – in the Freundel Stuart administration.

General secretary of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Steve Blackett reminisced of their days in Parliament, where Blackett was Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and. Community Development and Dr Lowe as Minister of Environment, Drainage and Water Resources.

The DLP general secretary described the former Member of Parliament for Christ Church East as “a good and decent man” who was controversial but firm in his beliefs.

“During our two terms in office, between 2008 and 2018, Denis and I sat next to each other both in Parliament and the Cabinet room, so I got to share every single week of his immense intellect, humanity, devotion to his constituents, his late mother and to his family, relatives and comrades.

“He was controversial in some of his mouthings but that was because his conviction to his philosophical beliefs often unbridled and loosened his tongue to the discomfort of some, but that was who he was,” Blackett stated.

Dr Lowe was well known for his rhetorical prowess within the party, Blackett recalled.

“His remarkable oration was informed, practised and cultivated by his exposure to the church as a lay preacher, he was evangelical in his parliamentary speeches and his platform presentations and lectures.”

Blackett expressed that he was sorrowed by his “friend”, and his “comrade” and added that Dr Low will be dearly missed.

“I personally deeply mourn my friend’s passing, I shall truly miss him, farewell my buddy, may the angels soar with you and deliver you into the arms of your waiting Lord, rest in peace comrade and rise in eternal glory.”

DLP president Dr Ronnie Yearwood also said his condolences to the family, colleagues and constituents of the party stalwart.

“The Party acknowledges Dr Lowe’s contribution in several capacities including serving as public affairs officer before becoming a Senator in 2003, winning the Christ Church East seat in the 2008 election, being appointed Minister of the Environment and Drainage and Water Resources.”

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him,” said the DLP leader in an official press statement.

Once DLP hopeful for the St James South, author and PR Consultant LaShawna Griffith revealed that Dr Lowe was in fact embarking on a memoir or two before today’s tragic news.

Shocked on hearing of his psssing, she wrote on her Facebook:

Tribute to Dr Denis Lowe

Four weeks ago I met with Denis Lowe Wendell Callender Margo DC as we held a planning meeting to discuss the marketing strategy for his book The Journey.

A very excited Lowe said,”You were highly recommended to me as I know you would do justice in writing my article about this book.”

I chuckled.

He continued and stated,

“I do not want this article to focus on politics but rather I want it to be about my spiritual journey. The one about politics going to come later and it will be a page-turner,” he said.

All of us chuckled.

I received the shock of my life this morning when I was told he had passed away.

I was dumbfounded.

I would like to wish my sincere condolences to the family of Dr Denis Lowe,

May he Rest In Peace.

The Yutes Recruits Dancehall Star Govana For “Riches & Power”

The Yutes and Govana have a special connection. This was clearly shown in the release of their second single, “Riches & Power,” from their forthcoming album Ghetto Yutes.

The track, which was produced by Cin-Trax, is a musical journey through a few different genres of music, including dancehall, ska, and Hip Hop. Govana is also featured on the track. The Yutes seem to be all about the music, no matter what the genre is. This is evidenced by their catalog, which incorporates Hip Hop, dancehall, reggae, and even some trap. Dancehall fans are well acquainted with Govana’s work, and he’s one of the top artists coming out of the island.

This track will expose him to a new market and may open doors for him in the US. Govana, whose real name is Romeo Nelson, is considered a prodigy of dancehall heavy hitter, Aidonia. He has not disappointed and has continued to keep putting out hits.

The video for the track was directed by Shane Creative and focused on Govana’s home ground in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. In it, the “Mannaz” artist is at a beachfront pool party location flowing with both women and luxury. Govana’s distinct voice permeates the vibe of the video and sets the tone for a banger.

The video is full of color and suggests those involved are having the time of their lives. They are very comfortable around each other, and this is probably because the Yutes have always shared their vision to create unique audio and visual experience that combines Jamaican and American music and culture.

That’s according to CEO Chuck Wilson of Babygrande, who added: “In collaboration with Govana, Shane Creative many others, I believe they have truly brought their vision to fruition with ‘Riches & Power.’”

They’ve stayed true to that mission of global superstardom and, in the last few years, collaborated with stars from both the U.S. and Jamaica. One of their latest singles, “Get Money,” features another heavyweight in dancehall, Masicka.

In that track, they went for the combination of dancehall and trap music which saw them get the video into rotation both in the US and the wider Caribbean. The track is already nearing 700,000 views on YouTube as well.

Tempête Fiona : la Martinique passe en vigilance Orange « fortes pluies et orages »

Le niveau de vigilance est renforcé ce vendredi après-midi (16 septembre) dans l’île à cause du passage de la tempête Fiona sur les îles du nord. 

Orange pour « fortes pluies et orages » et jaune pour « vagues – submersion ». Le niveau de vigilance se renforce pour la Martinique, même si la tempête passe plus au nord de l’arc antillais.

La tempête tropicale Fiona est localisée aux portes de l’archipel de la Guadeloupe. Le centre de Fiona est prévu de traverser la Guadeloupe entre vendredi après-midi et le début de nuit de vendredi à samedi, indique Météo-France, dans son bulletin de 17h15.

Orages jusqu’à dimanche

La Martinique restera à l’écart des effets les plus sévères générés par Fiona.

Néanmoins ce système génère de fortes précipitations et des orages jusqu’à dimanche matin. Le plus fort de cet épisode pluvio-orageux devrait se produire dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi et une bonne partie de la journée de samedi. De plus, de fortes rafales de vents de l’ordre 70 à 80 km/h, sont à craindre à proximité de ces averses orageuses. Les conditions de Mer sont dégradées au passage de Fiona.

Pluies 

De fortes averses localement orageuses se produisent ponctuellement dans un premier temps, puis ces précipitations se font plus nombreuses à partir de la seconde partie de journée. Des cumuls de 30 à 50mm sont attendus en 3 heures.

Sur l’ensemble de l’épisode, des cumuls de 120 à 150 mm, pourront être observés.

Mer 

Côte atlantique :

La tempête tropicale FIONA dirige une houle énergétique de Nord-Est à la côte Atlantique, des creux moyens de 3m00 à 3m50 sont attendus jusqu’à samedi mi-journée.

Côte Caraïbe :

Par ailleurs, le vent s’oriente au secteur sud, dans le sillage du phénomène FIONA, et provoque une agitation inhabituelle à la côte Caraïbe. Des creux moyens de 0m60 à 1m20 sont attendus à partir de la nuit prochaine.

La mer s’amortit progressivement à partir de dimanche.

Cops arrest 2 men, rescue women, girls in Chaguanas human-trafficking raid

The police rescued six women and two children, all from Latin America, in an anti-crime exercise in the Central Division on Thursday.

They also arrested the women’s two male captors in a house in Chaguanas.

The exercise took place between 3 am and 2 pm.

A police statement on Friday said the arrests and rescue came after a “meticulous human trafficking investigation” led by ACP, Criminal Division, Sharon Gomez-Cooper.

Sgt Walters and Cpl Ramsarran of the Counter-Trafficking Unit (CTU) co-ordinated the exercise. It included Special Investigations Task Force and the Multi-Option Police Section (MOPS) police.

The police also seized several items of “evidential value” at the premises.

Investigations are ongoing.

The police urge the public to report any suspected cases of human trafficking in their communities.

Signs that people may be victims of human trafficking include (especially in the case of women and children) people appearing malnourished and showing signs of physical injuries and abuse.

Victims often avoid eye contact, social interaction, and authority figures/law enforcement.

Other signs are that victims seem to adhere to scripted or rehearsed responses in social interaction and lack official identification documents.

They also appear destitute/lack personal items. They work excessively long hours and live at their place of employment.

The police said human-trafficking victims appear to have poor physical or dental health.

They might also have tattoos or branding on the neck and/or lower back and untreated sexually transmitted diseases.

People who suspect that human trafficking is happening near them can call the police at 999, 555, Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS (8477), or 800-4CTU.

One more dies of covid19

A middle-aged man with multiple comorbidities is the country’s latest covid19 fatality.

The Health Ministry’s daily covid19 update reported one death, which takes the death toll to 4,184.

There were 140 new cases, carrying the total active cases to 4,607. The Health Ministry said of the active cases, 186 people are in hospital, which included 13 in step-down facilities. Four people are in the intensive care unit and eight in the high dependency unit.

There are 4,421 in home isolation, while another 354 have been released from home isolation and 18 discharged from health facilities.

The total number of people vaccinated is 716,787, with 168,553 having received their booster shots.

Pedal cyclist dies in Canje accident

A 52-year-old pedal cyclist was this morning killed in an accident along the Canje Public Road.

Dead is Lakeram Sarjoo of Main Street Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.

Police said at around 08:10h, motorcar HD 628 was proceeding north along the western drive lane at a slow rate of speed while the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the opposite direction at a fast rate, swerving between vehicles.

The cyclist reportedly collided with the right side front portion of the car, and as a result of the impact, the cyclist fell on the road surface where he received injuries about his body.

He was picked up by the hire car driver in a semi conscious condition and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated for a fractured jaw and right leg.

He was later admitted in the Accident and Emergency Unit where he succumbed while receiving further treatment.

The hire car driver was arrested at the said hospital and escorted to Central Police Station. A breath alcohol test was conducted on the driver which returned a reading of zero micrograms.

Pedestrian killed in Essequibo Coast hit-and-run

Police in Regional Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on the Adventure Public Road and which claimed the life of 63-year-old Ameer Ally, a vendor of Adventure, Essequibo Coast.

Reports are that motorcar PWW 2293 was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate, while Ally was walking at the corner of the road when he was struck by the said motorcar.

As a result of the impact, he fell onto the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the motorcar initially fled the scene but was arrested a short while after and he remains in custody as investigations continue.

Popcaan continues his supremacy in dancehall with an upcoming collab with Post Malone.

There’s no doubt that the Unruly Boss is the hottest deejay in the game right now, and an upcoming collaboration with one of the best-selling rappers of this generation, Post Malone, will only help cement his position as one of the greatest Jamaicans to ever take up the mic. The collab was revealed by Post Malone’s Manager Dre London while speaking with the Observer. London also has a connection to Jamaica and may have been influential in getting the two artists to work together.

Dre London revealed that he and the “Firm and Strong” artist had already discussed the song and that Post Malone loves Popcaan’s work. He added that the pair had already met each other at one of the “Sunflower” rapper’s shows in the UK.

Popcaan has a long list of collaborations with high-profile artists, including Young Thug, Burna Boy, Davido, Maroon 5, and Drake, to name a few. His career is now just over a decade, and he has shown the rest of the industry that he has what it takes to maintain being one of the most sought-after artists in the genre.

Post Malone has enjoyed a similar trajectory and is beloved in the US for his unique blend of music. He also has just about a decade in the game and has a diamond-certified single called “Congratulations” featuring Quavo and has also set the record for most weeks at 77 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.

The rapper, whose real name is Austin Richard Post, has sold more than 13 million albums and 95 million digital singles and is also ranked the eighth best-selling digital artiste. He has also won 10 Billboard Music Awards, three American Music Awards, and one MTV Video Music Award.

Last year, Post Malone became the youngest artist in history to earn three RIAA diamond-certified singles. His songs “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage, “Sunflower” featuring Swae Lee, and the 21 Savage assisted “Congratulations,” have all sold over 10 million copies in the United States. On top of that, he has many platinum and gold records under his belt.

Popcaan getting on a song with Post Malone will certainly further his success commercially as an artist on the international scene.

There’s no doubt that when these two greats get together, the track will be fire.
