Montague: Can we ask King Charles to give up Jamaica? Loop Jamaica

A senior member of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Robert Montague, has questioned whether Jamaica could petition King Charles to “give up Jamaica so we can save the expense of a referendum”.

Montague posed the question Wednesday as he made his contribution to the State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives.

A referendum, among other things, is necessary for King Charles, who succeeded his mother Queen Elizabeth II on her death on September 8, to be removed as Jamaica’s Head of State.

Noting that Jamaica had unfinished business following the death of the Queen, as the country transitions to a republic, Montague stated: “If we are to be a republic, not only must the constitution be changed but many other symbols, orders and arrangements too.”

“Holding a referendum is not the end all nor be all of the process. I would want it to be the end — sort out everything now — so that when you hold the referendum it’s smooth sailing as a republic,” he said.

While former Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Fort was appointed the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs in January and tasked with overhauling Jamaica’s Constitution, Montague, who has held several senior positions in the JLP and is the current Chairman of the party, asked whether the new Republican-type constitution was drafted and ready.

“Do we need a Constitutional Assembly?” he asked.

Montague pointed out that the seals, emblems and buttons worn by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force would have to be changed.

“We now have an opportunity to change to a Jamaican standard or are we going to change to King Charles [standard] and two years’ time change again?” he said.

The Member of Parliament for St Mary Western said he was asking the questions on behalf of his constituents.

He asked: “Since King Charles III is the King of Jamaica, can he abdicate his Jamaican throne without abdicating his British throne?”

“While we know that if Jamaica wishes to leave the monarchy, we must hold a referendum, what if the King wishes no longer to be our King or Head of State? Where would that leave us? Can we force him to be our Head of State? Is that allowed?” Montague added.

Not finished, he asked whether Jamaicans could petition the King.

“Can we ask him to give up Jamaica, so we can save the expense of a referendum? What’s the timetable or pathway not only to have a referendum, but for a fully functional republic? I am no lawyer but these are some of the questions my citizens (constituents) want answered,” Montague said.

NGP Leader Appalled By Reports Of Ill-Treatment Of Saint Lucians On Canadian Farms – St. Lucia Times News

The leader of Saint Lucia’s National Green Party (NGP) says he is appalled by reports of ill-treatment of Saint Lucian women who went to Canada to work in the seasonal farm workers programme.

Latoya Ben who spent nearly six months picking strawberries on a Canadian farm claimed that the women suffered physical and verbal abuse, including being called ‘hungry dogs’.

While admitting that housing conditions were ‘okay’, Ben said the workers had to pay taxes as well as rent and utilities.

In addition, she said the farm did not pay for extra or holiday work.

NGP leader Andre ‘Pancho’ de Caires described such treatment as totally unacceptable.

And he declared that guilty parties should be prosecuted.

“We as black people who have gone through slavery, working on the plantations and to go up there to be treated in this manner is totally unacceptable and the people who are treating our people like that should be prosecuted because that’s a human rights abuse,” de Caires told St Lucia Times.

“If they are going to treat farm workers like that I would encourage our people not to go on farms to be treated in that manner,” the NGP leader stated.

In addition, he urged the authorities here to intervene.

Forty Saint Lucian women made history earlier this year as the first batch of females to enroll in the seasonal farm workers programme in Canada.

Jamaica is reported to have withdrawn its workers from four Canadian farms since the start of this year due to unacceptable conditions.

iCreate Founder and CEO Tyrone Wilson (left) and attorney and lead investor Able-Don Foote sign the convertible debt deal agreement.

NEWYou can now listen to Loop News articles!

The Able-Don Foote hedge fund, Astronomical Holdings has loaned $100 million to listed company iCreate Limited in a deal that will initially double the debt load at the training institute.

Foote is an attorney and lead investor in the fund that inked a convertible debt deal with iCreate.

The deal allows Astronomical Holdings, through its subsidiary AHL (SPV) Ltd to convert the debt into equity.

iCreate liabilities to June stood at $103 million from $65 million a year earlier. The $100 million loan would appear to double the liabilities.

Foote, in a release, said that the decision by AHL to invest was due to its visibility of iCreate’s growth prospects of the impending purchase of Visual Vibe limited, the largest digital outdoor advertising company in Jamaica.

“The idea is that these proceeds will go towards funding the impending visual vibe transaction,” Foote stated.

He added: “Great things can happen when strategic partnerships are forged.”

iCreate was in a negative equity position in 2021 when its liabilities surpassed its assets by $4 million.

It returned to a positive capital position of $26 million in 2022 after posting profits.
