Luego de un juicio de siete días, un jurado federal condenó el miércoles a Jairo Huertas Mercado y Erik Pizarro Mercado, por seis robos de vehículos, un secuestro, un asesinato y delitos relacionados con armas de fuego.

Debido a su condena por el asesinato por secuestro, ambos acusados enfrentan sentencias de cadena perpetua obligatoria, además de cualquier sentencia impuesta por las condenas restantes. El fiscal federal W. Stephen Muldrow y el Agente Especial a Cargo del FBI, Joseph González, hicieron el anuncio.

Según los documentos judiciales y las pruebas presentadas en el juicio, los acusados ​​cometieron los siguientes delitos:

20 de mayo de 2018: Robo a mano armada de un Toyota Tacoma 2016. La víctima conducía su Tacoma hacia Naguabo, en el sector de Río Blanco, cuando los imputados y otros dos utilizaron otro vehículo para bloquear al conductor de la Tacoma. Los acusados ​​y otro participante le mostraron sus armas de fuego a la víctima y lo obligaron a salir del Tacoma. Luego, los participantes tomaron la Tacoma de la víctima y otros bienes personales. Posteriormente, el Tacoma se utilizó para promover otro robo de automóvil.

27 de mayo de 2018: Robo a mano armada de un Infiniti 2004. Los acusados ​​usaron la Tacoma que robaron el 20 de mayo de 2018 para robar un Infiniti. Específicamente, los acusados ​​y otros dos participantes condujeron la Tacoma hasta una familia que disfrutaba de su día en el área de El Yunque. Allí, les mostraron armas de fuego a los miembros de la familia y se llevaron el Infiniti y los bienes muebles de la familia, incluidas las cámaras que usaron en otro robo de auto. Finalmente, los acusados quemaron el Infiniti en un área donde mataron a Luis Saenz Matias.

31 de mayo de 2018: El asesinato por secuestro de Luis Saenz-Matías. Los acusados ​​y otro secuestraron a Luis Sáenz Matías porque creían que era miembro de un grupo rival. Los acusados ​​eran miembros de un grupo de narcotraficantes que estaba en desacuerdo con un grupo del que los acusados ​​creían que Sanz-Matias era miembro. 3 de junio de 2018: robo a mano armada de un Nissan Altima 2009 el 3 de junio de 2018. Jairo Huertas Mercado y otra persona participaron en este robo de auto ocurrido en la playa de Piñones. En un primer momento, Jairo Huertas-Mercado y el otro participante usaron cámaras tomadas de las víctimas del robo de autos de Inifiniti para simular estar haciendo una sesión de fotos para no levantar sospechas de la víctima. Luego apuntaron con armas de fuego a las víctimas: un hombre y sus dos amigas. El otro participante en la infracción golpeó a una de las hembras. Luego, Jairo Huertas Mercado y el otro participante tomaron el Altima.

4 de junio de 2018: Robo a mano armada de un Toyota Camry rojo-burdeos. Los acusados ​​y otro le robaron el Camry a una pareja de ancianos que pescaban cangrejos cerca de la playa Tropical en Naguabo. Los participantes primero bloquearon el Camry y luego apuntaron con armas de fuego a la pareja. Luego le quitaron el Camry a la pareja. El Camry se usó de inmediato para promover otro robo de auto ese día.

4 de junio de 2018: Robo a mano armada de un Kia Sportage 2016. Poco después del robo del Camry, los acusados ​​le quitaron un Kia Sportage a una víctima femenina que acababa de llegar de su iglesia en Canóvanas, PR. Los acusados ​​usaron el Camry para bloquear la parte delantera del vehículo de la víctima. El otro participante del robo de auto del Camry estaba detrás del Sportage. Se mostró un arma de fuego a la víctima y los acusados ​​le quitaron el Sportage a la víctima femenina. Luego, la mujer víctima pidió ayuda al conductor del vehículo detrás de ella, quien sin saberlo, era el otro participante del robo del Camry y estaba con los que acababan de robarla. El otro participante no ayudó a la víctima femenina y persiguió a los acusados, que acababan de tomar el Sportage. El Sportage fue utilizado por los acusados ​​y otros dos para robar y secuestrar a Bryan Rohena Pérez, mejor conocido por su nombre artístico Bryant Myers. Después del secuestro y robo de auto de Rohena Pérez, el Sportage fue quemado.

5 de junio de 2018: Rrobo de auto y secuestro de Bryan Rohena Pérez y su madre.

Jairo Huertas Mercado le guardaba rencor a Rohena Pérez por la muerte de su primo, Corroro, a quien Rohena Pérez mencionó en una canción. En represalia, los acusados ​​y otros dos partieron en el Kia Sportage para secuestrar a Rohena Pérez, quienes sabían que estaba en la cancha de baloncesto en Loma Alta, Carolina. Una vez que estos llegaron a Loma Alta, se dirigieron hacia Rohena Pérez y le apuntaron con armas de fuego. Luego obligaron a Rohena Pérez a subir al vehículo. Rohena Pérez luchó y uno de los participantes usó un arma para golpear a Rohena Pérez en la cabeza.

Mientras esto sucedía, la madre de Rohena Pérez fue al lugar y suplicó a los participantes armados, a que no dañaran a su hijo. Mientras tanto, otras personas se acercaron a los acusados, y uno disparó al aire para dispersar a la multitud. Jairo Huertas Mercado luego llevó a la mamá de Rohena Pérez a la casa de Rohena Pérez.

BMW X6 SUV y Erick Pizarro Mercado y los otros dos participantes llevaron a Bryant Myers en el Sportage. Se dirigieron a un vertedero en Carolina. Allí, la policía llegó al lugar y Rohena Pérez s pudo saltar del Sportage. La mamá de Rohena Pérez también salió del BMW. Ella resultó ilesa. En esa fecha, los imputados y los otros dos participantes escaparon de la policía.

El FBI y el Negociado de la Policía de Puerto Rico fueron los encargados de investigar estos casos. El fiscal federal adjunto Víctor Acevedo Hernández estuvo a cargo de la acusación en el caso.

The Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment says the number of active cases of Covid 19 remains at 15, as there were no new cases recorded here on Wednesday September 14th

In its latest update, the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment says no one is currently hospitalized with Covid 19, and no recoveries were noted on Wednesday.

9,446 cases of COVID-19 and 9,315 recoveries have been reported in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to date.   116 people have died from the virus.

And, 72,682 COVID-19 vaccines have so far been administered locally.  37,218 persons have received their first dose;  31,317 have received their second dose and 4,147 persons have received boosters.

A truck driver has been arrested following the death of a 45-year-old man in an accident at around 01:30h today along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

Dead is Nigel Cush of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, who was driving motorcar PVV 7062.

Reports are that the motorcar was crossing Mandela Avenue onto Vlissengen Road when the motor lorry, which was travelling east along Mandela Avenue, collided with the vehicle.

The truck driver told police that as he approached the stoplight at Vlissengen Road and Mandela Avenue, it was showing green, and as such, he continued driving when he saw the motorcar proceeding south toward Vlissengen Road.

“According to the driver of the lorry as he approached the stop light at Vlissengen Road and Nelson Mandela Avenue which was showing green, he continued driving when he saw motorcar PVV 7062 proceeding south along Vlissengen Road. According to the lorry driver, the motorcar then slowed down on the approach of Mandela Avenue, and continued further south, into the lorry’s path,” police said in a statement to the media.

The truck driver further told investigators that he then applied brakes and swerved in a south-eastern direction but the left side front portion of the lorry collided with the right-side front portion of the motorcar.

However, CCTV footage shows that it was the motorcar that had the greenlight.

As a result of the collision, the car slammed into a lamp pole situated in the center of the median.

The car driver received injuries about his body, and was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious state. He was placed into an ambulance and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the 44-year-old truck driver of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) but no trace of alcohol was detected.

As the number of weekly reported deaths from COVID-19 plunged to its lowest since March 2020, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that the end of the pandemic is now in sight.

“We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic”, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists during his regular weekly press conference.

The UN health agency’s Director-General explained however, that the world is “not there yet”.

Finish line in sight

“A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view. She runs harder, with all the energy she has left. So must we. We can see the finish line. We’re in a winning position. But now is the worst time to stop running”, he underscored.

He also warned that if the world does not take the opportunity now, there is still a risk of more variants, deaths, disruption, and uncertainty.

“So, let’s seize this opportunity”, he urged, announcing that WHO is releasing six short policy briefs that outline the key actions that all governments must take now to “finish the race”.

Urgent call

The policy briefs are a summary, based on the evidence and experience of the last 32 months, outlining what works best to save lives, protect health systems, and avoid social and economic disruption.

“[They] are an urgent call for governments to take a hard look at their policies and strengthen them for COVID-19 and future pathogens with pandemic potential”, Tedros explained.

The documents, which are available online, include recommendations regarding vaccination of most at-risk groups, continued testing and sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and integrating effective treatment for COVID-19 into primary healthcare systems.

They also urge authorities to have plans for future surges, including the securing of supplies, equipment, and extra health workers.

The briefs also contain communications advice, including training health workers to identify and address misinformation, as well as creating high-quality informative materials.

Committed to the future

Tedros underscored that WHO has been working since New Year’s Eve 2019 to fight against the spread of COVID and will continue to do so until the pandemic is “truly over”.

“We can end this pandemic together, but only if all countries, manufacturers, communities and individuals step up and seize this opportunity”, he said.

Possible scenarios

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on COVID-19, highlighted that the virus is still “ intensely circulating” around the world and that the agency believes that case numbers being reported are an underestimate.

“We expect that there are going to be future waves of infection, potentially at different time points throughout the world caused by different subvariants of Omicron or even different variants of concern”, she said, reiterating her previous warning that the more the virus circulates, the more opportunities it has to mutate.

However, she said, these future waves do not need to translate into “waves or death” because there are now effective tools such as vaccines and antivirals specifically for COVID-19.
